IHAVEWITNESSEDmanypeoplejumpupanddown,claptheirhands,andsquealwithexcitement—allsimultaneously—afterseeingtheirfirstminiaturegarden.I’vealsohadpeoplewritemelonge-mailsabouttheirfirstgarden,curseme(jokingly)forgettingthemstarted,andevenphonetothankmeforintroducingthemtothiscaptivatinghobby.Itellthemifminiaturegardeningwasn’tsomuchfun,Iwouldn’tbedoingit.Overtheyears,theconcepthasgraduallycaughtonandbeenembracedthroughouttheworld.Someseemtothinkit’schild’splayandnotforrealgardeners,butiftheypickupthisbookandreadit,theywillfindthatgardeninginminiaturecanbeaschallengingasdesigningafull-sizedgarden;proportionandscale,elementsofgardendesign,andsustainabilityallneedtobeconsidered.

Itisagreatwaytogetkidsintothegarden,butpeopleareoftensurprisedtolearnthatmostminiaturegardenersareoverforty-fiveyearsold.

ANINTRODUCTIONWHATISITTHATdrawstheheartandeyetothingssmallerthanreallife?Perhapsthefactthatanythingminiatureremindsusofplay.Afterall,ourchildhoodtoyswereourfirstminiatures.WhethertheywereLincolnLogs,Legos,Barbies,G.I.Joes,orotherkindsofdolls,ourtoyswerealwaysminiatureversionsofusorotherpartsofourlives.Weprojectedourselvesintothesceneandgotlostinthesmallversionofourworld,exactlyhowwelikedit.Thosepositivefeelingsofplayandlaughterwere—andstillare—vitaltoourhappiness,andwhenweseeminiaturesandrememberourfun,carefreeplaytimes,wefeelthatwayagain.

Alife-sizedbridgetocross,orminiaturetoadmire?Illusioncanbeenchanting.

Thesenseofwonderthatcomesoveruscanbequitepotent.Whenyouarethewriteranddirector,creatingthestory,settingthescene,andplacingthe

props,youbringthatinnocentpleasureintoyouradultlifeundertheguiseofahobby.Butreally,hobbiesjustgiveuspermissiontoplayagain.

Manyminiaturistsareenamoredwiththeideaofanythingsmallbecauseminiaturesareapartofourhistory.Theoldestknownhumanartifactisadiminutivereplicaofthefemaleform,theVenusofHohleFels,datedbetween35,000and40,000B.C.Thistinysculptureisjustundertwoandahalfinchestall.Dollhouseminiaturethemesareoftenamemoryfromchildhood,aplacevisitedinthepast,oraloveofaspecifichistoricalperiod.Itisnoteworthythatthemainthemesofdollhouseminiaturesandmodelrailroadsarehistorical,remindingusofasimplertime.Modelorgardenrailroadingtakesusonajourneythroughaspecificlandscapethatiseitherahistoricalmodel,orcomesfromthecreator’smind.Youcan’thelpbutimagineyourselfinthescene.

Thinkofthecontainergardenasasmallecosystemwheretheplantsarelimitedintheirsearchforfoodandwater,sotheyrelyonyoutofulfillthoseneeds.Ifyouareanewgardener,keepacloseeyeonyourcontainers,especiallyduringdryperiods,andusethefingertesttomonitorsoilmoisture.

Ifyou’reworriedthatyou’llforgettowater,pickadayoftheweekandmarkthesamedayonyourcalendarforthenextsixmonths.Thencheckyourplant’ssoilmoistureeveryweekonthatday,andwaterifnecessary.Eventually,wateringwillbecomesecondnature.Afterawhile,youwilllearnhowtotellexactlywhenyourplantsneedwater,andwillnotneedascheduleanymore.

Whileit’seasiertouseplantswiththesamewaterneeds,youcanmixmoisture-lovingplantswithdry-lovingplantsinthesamecontainer.Plantthewater-lovingplantinitsownpot,thenplantthatpotinthelargergardencontainer.Thatwillseparatethewaterforthemoisture-lovingplantfromthesoilintherestofthegarden,andyoucanwateritmoreoften.Foringroundminiaturegardens,thistrickhasmixedresults,asplantsareallsubjecttothesameweatherandit’shardertokeepsoilmoisturelevelsseparate.

Ifyouaregardeninginacontainer,youmayhavetodividegroundcoverseverycoupleofyears.Thissoundsalotworsethanitactuallyis,andtakeslesstimethanyoumightthink.Fromthebackofthegarden,usingatrowel,gentlyslipthebladedownalongthebacksideofthepot.Usingleveragefromthetrowel—don’tusethepot’sedge,oritmaybreak—gentlyliftupandloosentheplant’srootsabit.Takethetroweloutanddothesamethingontheothersidesoftheplant.Youareessentiallycuttingtheplantoutofthepot.Whenallsidesareloosened,usingyourhands,gentlyliftuptheclumpofgroundcoveroutofthepot.Divideitgentlybypullingitapartasyouwouldasoftdinnerroll:gentlybutfirmly.Putthemoredesirableclumpbackintheminiaturegardenandmakesuretofacethenicestsideoftheplanttowardthegarden’sfront.

Therootsofyourplantswilleventuallyoutgrowtheirpot.Thiswilltakeseveralseasons,dependingonthesizeofthepotandtheplantsyouhaveused.Witheitheranoldkitchenknifeoratrowel,cutdownalongtheinteriorsidesofthepot—justaswhenyoufreethesidesofacakefromitsbakingpan.Thiswillcutanyrootsthathavestucktothesidesofthepot.Thentipthegardenpotonitssideandholditinplacewithonehand,whilecoaxingthecontentsoutofthepotwithyourotherhand.Whenthegardenisoutofthepot,startseparatingouttheplantsthatwillbemovingtoanotherhome,coaxingtherootsapartgently.Youcanusedividedplantstomakeanothergarden,planttheminaningroundbed,orgivethemtoafellowminiaturegardener.

Youcanalsoprunerootsbytakingtheplantoutofthepotandcuttingtherootsbynomorethanone-third,andreplacingtheplantinthepotwithsomefreshpottingsoil.Waterthoroughly.

Theurgetopruneaminiaturegardenisoftenstrong.Asniphere,asnipthereonasunnysummermorningisheavenonearthtosomepeople.Inthistypeofgardening,however,youprunesparinglyratherthanasaroutinepractice,becauseitonlyencouragesmoregrowth.

Thefrequencyandtypeofpruningcanvarydependinguponyourplants,buttherearesomegeneralrules.Forallplants,pruneanydead,dying,broken,ordiseasedbranches,andbranchesthatarerubbingorcrossingeachother.Formostplants,pruneafterthespringgrowthspurtoraftertheyfinishflowering.Forperennials,deadheadspentflowerstogettheplantstobloomagainbeforetheygotoseed.Iftheplantisgettingleggy,meaningallthegrowthisatthetopofthestems,andyouseenewgrowthatthebaseofthegroundcoverorperennial,prunethestemstojustabovethenewbuds—thiswilldirecttheplant’senergytotheyounggrowth.

Foringroundgardens,fallisthebesttimetoplant.Newplantswillgetwateringhelpwithautumnrainsandwillgodormantalongwiththerestofthegardencomewintertime.Whenspringarrives,therootswillbeestablishedandstable.Monitornewplantingsforthefirstfullsummertomakesuretheygetthewatertheyneed.Bythesecondsummertheywillbeestablishedandonlyneedwaterinextremedroughtconditions.

Ifyouareinatemperatezoneandthegroundisnotfrozen,youcanalsoplantinthewinter.Iftheweatherhasbeenverywet,holdoffuntilthesoildriesoutabit.Workingthegroundwhenitissoakedwillharmthetinymicrocosmsandairpocketsthatareneededforhealthysoil.

Springtimeisanothergoodtimetoplant,asspringrainsnurturenewtransplants.Again,ifthesoiliswaterlogged,letitdryoutbeforeyoudig.Ifthegroundisfrozen,waitforittothawcompletely.Ifitisadryspring,youwillhavetoprovidethewater.Generally,plantstakeaseasonortwotobecomeestablished,soyouwillstillhavetotendyourminiaturegardencloselythroughthefirstsummer.Youmaywanttoaddsomecompostorpeatmosstothesoilbeforeplanting,tohelpitretainmoisture.

Inmoretemperateregions,youcanplantinsummer,butinthehotterclimates,fallisbetterforingroundplanting.Withexcessiveheatandfullsun,plantsmaynotsurvivebothtransplantshockandextremehotweather.Therootsarenotyetestablished,somaintainaregularwateringschedulefortherestofthesummer.Shadenewplantsthatareinextremeheatandsun.Abiggolforgardenumbrellaworkswell.Anchortheendoftheumbrella,orusetentstakesandropetoholditinplace.
