at Concordia College (492/371 MIAC)
February 3, 2007
Moorhead Sports Center Moorhead, MN
GAME TIME: 2 p.m. SERIES: Concordia leads 861 SERIES STARTED: 2000 LAST SEASON: Last year Bethel swept the Cobbers in St. Paul and did not allow a goal in the process. The Royals won the first game 30 as they broke the game open with a pair of goals 29 seconds apart in the third period. It was a 10 game midway through the final period until Lisa Kinney scored at 10:22 and the teammate Bethany Murphy added the final insurance goal at 10:51. The Royals outshot the Cobbers 2822 for the game. Neither team scored on the power play. CC went 0for1 and the Royals were held scoreless in their two attempts. In the second game, Bethel scored once in the first and then one more time in the third and rode the hot goaltending of Beth Spurrier to capture the series sweep. Spurrier stopped 24 shots in the series finale and all 46 she faced on the weekend. Surprisingly, she was not named the MIAC Player of the Week. In the second game, BU held a 3324 shot advantage and for the second straight game, neither team connected on the power play.

LAST NIGHT’S GAME RECAP There are many great mysteries in life. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Who built Stonehenge? If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it really make a sound? The Cobber women's hockey team has added another mystery to that list. How does one get a puck past Bethel goalie Beth Spurrier?
Concordia recorded 24 shots on goals against the Royal goalie, but none found the back of the net and the Cobbers wound up losing at home to Bethel 10 on Friday.
The shutout victory marks the third straight blanking of Concordia by Spurrier in a streak that stretches back to the two games in the 200506 season. CC has now gone 180 straight minutes without getting a puck by the sophomore netminder.
The loss delivers a sever blow for Concordia's playoff hopes. They entered the game 361 in the MIAC and only three points back of Bethel for the fifth, and final, spot in the conference playoffs. Now, CC is 371 in league play and a full five games adrift of the Royals. Concordia is now 492 overall.
With the win, Bethel climbs above the .500 mark in conference play. The Royals are now 542 in the MIAC and make a jump into fourth place in the league standings. Overall, they are now 682 on the year. The victory also snaps a sevengame winless skid for BU.
The lone goal of the game came towards the end of the first period. Bethel sophomore Bethany Murphy finished off a pass from Amy Beitzel to give the Royals the only goal they would need in the game at the 16:39 mark of the opening frame.
From then on, Spurrier did the work. She stopped everything the Cobbers could throw on net and did not allow any quality second chances.
Cobber goalie Amber Malcolm matched Spurrier save for save but unfortunately conceded the only goal of the night. In the end, she turned aside 16 shots.
Neither team could score on the power play. Concordia went 0for6 while the Royals were held scoreless in their five attempts.
The biggest chance for the Cobbers came midway though the second period when CC had a 5on3 advantage for over a full two minutes. They were unable to find a way past Spurrier and the Bethel goalie only got stronger from that point forward.
For the game, Concordia outshot Bethel 2417. The Cobbers were whistled for five penalties for 10 penalty minutes and the Royals recorded eight penalties for 16 minutes.

COBBER LAST GAME RECAP St. Mary’s 4 at Concordia 0 – Saturday, Jan. 20 On Friday, Concordia used their familiarity with the Moorhead Sports Center sight lines to net six goals on their way to the largest offensive output of the season. Saturday afternoon was a completely different story as the Cobbers struggled to find quality chances and was shutout for the third time this season in a 40 loss to St. Mary's.
One of the keys in the game came from power play chances. Concordia spent much of the game killing off penalties and were never able to get into a sustained flow in the game. The Cobbers were whistled for a seasonhigh nine penalties and had to kill 10 different Cardinal power play attempts. CC's overworked penalty kill team was the only success story for the Cobbers. Concordia successfully killed off 9 of the 10 manadvantage situations in the game.
On the other side, St. Mary's was only whistled for four penalties and had to kill off only two power play attempts. Despite only having two power play chances, CC was only outshot 2423 in the game.
SMU got on the board in the first period when Melissa Mondo netted her 10th goal of the season at 11:09. The goal would turn out to be the gamewinner as St. Mary's goalie Nikki Jung stopped all 23 Cobber shots in the game.
Jung did the majority of the work in the third period when CC outshot SMU 126. The Cobbers could never get the allimportant first goal and were always battling a twogoal deficit.
The Cardinals added two goals in the middle period and then finished off the scoring with a goal with less than two minutes to play in the game.
Concordia goalie Amber Malcolm made 20 saves for the game.
ROYAL LAST GAME RECAP Gustavus 8 at Bethel 0 – Saturday, Jan. 27 (Courtesy of Gustavus SID) Jenny Pusch netted four goals, including three on the power play, as the Gustavus Adolphus women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Bethel University 80 Saturday afternoon at Schwan Super Rink in Blaine. Molly Doyle scored a pair of goals for the second night in a row for the Gusties.
The Gusties scored four times in the final 6:05 of the first period behind two goals by Doyle and one each by Pusch and Andrea Peterson. Pusch got Gustavus on the board with a powerplay goal at the 13:55 mark of the first period off an assist from Kelly Crandall. Crandall assisted on the next Gustie goal as well, as Doyle extended the Gustavus lead to 20 just 39 seconds later. Liz Haakenson was also credited with an assist on the play. Doyle notched her second goal of the period at the 16:18 mark when she scored off an assist from Stefanie Ubl. Peterson made the score 40 with a shorthanded goal 47 seconds later. Pusch made the lead 50 with a goal at the 3:22 mark of the second period and Margaret Dorer pushed the lead to six with a goal at the 17:46 mark. Mari Gunderson and Jessie Doig were credited with assists on Pusch's goal, while Crandall and Doyle notched helpers on Dorer's goal. Pusch completed the hat trick with a powerplay goal at the 9:30 mark of the third period off assists from Melissa Mackley and Dorer, and then notched her fourth of the game at the 13:54 mark off an assist from Alyssa Saunders to complete the scoring.
Breanna Scavo made four saves over the first two periods to get her second career win in net for Gustavus. Sarah Windhorst and Amanda Rosequist each played ten minutes in the third period, making one and two saves, respectively. Beth Spurrier faced a barrage of shots for the second night in a row, making 46 saves on Saturday to go with 54 on Friday night. Gustavus outshot Bethel 547 and finished 4of8 in powerplay opportunities. The Royals were 0for5 with one shot on goal in their opportunities with the extra skater.
