teachingc. Ways cell phones can be used in the classroomd. How to overcome issues of cell phones

STEP 2: TAKE ACTION

• Researched reliable, unbiased websites on topic

• Researched topics in textbook

• Read case studies and looked at examples

• Looked at both sides of argument

• Organized/integrated information

• Made PowerPoint to demonstrate knowledge

STEP 3: MONITOR

• First monitored progress for midterm• Reflected and saw I was starting to make progress• Changed product idea from paper to posting on wiki

• Monitored while researching more thoroughly• Narrowed focus to just cell phone use in schools not

relationships• Reflected and saw that I was making good progress• In addition to posting on wiki, I added the idea of a

PowerPoint to demonstrate what learned

FINDINGS:

• Goal: Learn about role of cell phones in education

• Intro: I learned that cell phones can be used in many ways that I had never thought of before. Of course students like the idea, but teachers/schools are hesitant because of the many negative ideas we have about cell phones. Through my examination, I see that the positives may outweigh the negatives. It all depends on the teacher and their style.

WAYS TO BE USED IN EDUCATION

1. Use in place of student response systemsPoll Everywhere: make surveys to access student knowledge

2. Student/class blogswww.blogger.com from cell phones• Easily upload pictures, videos, and information

3. Special features• Use as timer for science experiments• Use as calculators for math problems• Take pictures/record experiments to write reflection on

later• Record student discussions when there are multiple

groups so you can hear everyone’s group

WAYS TO BE USED IN EDUCATION(CONTINUED)

4. Twitter• Follow line by line literature accounts to discuss each isolated

line• Post reminders • Connect with other educators• Use hashtags to read about relevant information

5. Communicate with students• Send reminders for upcoming projects• Easy access for students to ask questions

6. QR codes• Scavenger hunt with riddles about content• Quick access to other videos and sites with extra information

Page 16: GAME plan

WAYS TO BE USED IN EDUCATION (CONTINUED)

7. MobileStudy.org• Develop quizzes students can access outside of class

8. Quick research for class discussion• If a question comes up about a relevant topic, children

can immediately find more information to extend discussion and understanding

Page 17: GAME plan

HOW TO OVERCOME ISSUES• Lack of access to cell phone• Do survey before attempting to see how many have phones and

what features they have to see if worth it• Share/collaborate• Talk to company about funding/supplying cell phones for education• Ask for old phones/donations

• Safety (cyberbullying/personal info/predators)• Talk with students about safety before, during, and after use• Monitor use• Set up limits• Never give out personal info• Make sure to provide safe sites/resources• Emphasize importance of respecting one another and potential

negative results such as leading to suicide

Page 18: GAME plan

HOW TO OVERCOME ISSUES

• Distractions• Make sure volume is off• Monitor student use• Make them keep it out of sight or on edge of desk when

not using in class• Lack of teacher knowledge/time• Connect with other educators on blogs/social networking

sites• Take time off to research

Page 19: GAME plan

HOW TO OVERCOME ISSUES

• Lack of school/parent support• Demonstrate how it can improve learning• Show how it makes work easier• Explain how saves money and offers different

experiences couldn’t normally access

• No balance of work/personal life with cell phone access• Establish certain time limits unavailable (no contact after

9pm-6:30am)

EXAMPLES OF APPS/SOFTWARE FOR CELL PHONES

• GoKnow software: turns smartphones to computers with word processors, spreadsheets, etc• Poll Everywhere: surveys/response systems for

phones• Twitter: connect, reminders• Kaywa: QR reader• Mobile Study: study quizzes on the go• Oxford Dictionary Software: access words for

writing

Page 21: GAME plan

EXAMPLES OF APPS/SOFTWARE FOR CELL PHONES

• Graph Viewer Software: allows to make graphs• Quizlet app: helps study with quizzes• Ebooks: allows to read/access books• Tutor.com: own personal tutor for children• Evernote: create, organize, outline notes or

lesson plans• Mobile Mouse Pad: turns phone into remote for

interactive whiteboard

EVALUATE/EXTEND

• I have met my goal and subgoals• Approach of taking steps, planning, and researching

were successful• I could have used a concept map to show relationship

among ideas• I could have created better deadlines for myself on how

much research I should have done by certain time• Next time I should start of making sure my goal is not

too much• Extend: I could further explore how cell phones do affect

relationships or how tablets, the next size up, portable computer-like device can be used in classrooms
