GAME NOTES: OFFENSE

ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST• Head coach Dino Babers likes to go fast and Syracuse has started off that way through two games. The Orange ran 88 plays against Western Michigan and 80 against Wagner. The Orange's 168 plays are ed for 15th-most in the FBS. Six of the team's ahead of Syracuse in that department have played an addi onal game.• Syracuse is currently averaging a play every 20.7 seconds of possession me.• Seventeen of Syracuse's 18 scoring drives (94.4 pct.) this season have been under three minutes in dura on. In fact, 13 of those drives (72.2 pct.) were less than two minutes.• In 2017, Syracuse was fi h in the na on with 1,027 off ensive plays run and averaged 85.6 plays per contest.• In 12 games last season, the Orange ran at least 90 plays on six occasions and surpassed the 80-play mark eight mes.• Clemson paced the na on with 1,048 plays in 2017. North Texas (1,037), USC (1,034) and Ohio State (1,029) joined Syracuse in the top fi ve, however, those schools all played two more games than the Orange.

DUNGEY THE RUNNER• In 2017, QB Eric Dungey became the fi rst signal caller since Don McPherson in 1986 to lead the Orange in rushing. Dungey ran for 595 yards on 143 carries (4.2 avg.) and nine touchdowns a season ago.• While scampering for 61 yards on the ground in the upset of No. 2 Clemson last season, Dungey became the sixth Syracuse quarterback to surpass 1,000 yards rushing.• With his 200-yard game at Western Michigan in the opener, Dungey passed McPherson for third in quarterback rushing at Syracuse. Dungey now has 1,483 yards on the ground, trailing only Bill Hurley (2,551) and Donovan McNabb (1,561).• Hurley, McNabb, McPherson (1,251), Walley Mahle (1,150) and Dave Warner (1,139) are the other fi ve quarterbacks in the Orange annals who have reached the 1,000-yard rushing plateau.• Dungey already holds the Orange record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (21), a mark he set with a 3-yard TD run at Florida State last season while playing with a broken foot.

RUSHING ATTACK• Syracuse has been dominant on the ground through two weeks, scoring seven rushing touchdowns and totaling 449 rushing yards (224.5 avg.) in its fi rst two games.• RB Dontae Strickland has four touchdowns on the ground this season, a mark that leads the ACC and ranks fourth na onally. Strickland has scored a pair rushing touchdowns in both games.• While Syracuse has been over 200 yards rushing in each game, much of the success came in week one when the Orange racked 334 yards at Western Michigan. QB Eric Dungey set the team record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 200 in the opener, RB Moe Neal and Strickland each tallied a pair of touchdowns, the fi rst me Syracuse has had mul ple players with at least two rushing scores since Dee Brown (2) and James Mungro (2) in 2000 versus Temple.• Syracuse's 334 yards were the most on the ground under head coach Dino Babers and the highest team running total since the Orange gained 370 in 2014 versus Maryland.• Since joining the ACC in 2013, Syracuse has totaled six games with 300 or more rushing yards.

ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST

2018 SYRACUSE FOOTBALL

5

SPREADING THE WEALTH• Eight diff erent players caught a pass in the Orange's win over Wagner on Sept. 8.• WR Sean Riley (6), WR Jamal Cus s (5), WR Devin Butler (4), WR Nykeim Johnson (3), WR Sharod Johnson (2), RB Dontae Strickland (2), WR Taj Harris (1) and TE Ravian Pierce (1) all caught passes in the win. • The eight players to catch a ball is the most since nine did so against Wake Forest on Nov. 11, 2017.

DUAL THREAT• QB Eric Dungey is the only ac ve FBS quarterback with over 6,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards. In fact, only three other quarterbacks na onally have even 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards.• Dungey's 298.5 yards of total off ense per game in his career ranks third amongst ac ve players. Michigan transfer Shea Pa erson – previously at Ole Miss – has the most with 301.9 yards per game, while West Virginia's Will Grier (299.5) is second. Middle Tennessee's Brent Stocks ll is ed with Dungey for third na onally.• Behind Dungey, Florida State's Deondre Francois ranks seventh na onally in total off ense this season (268.1) and is the next closest ACC compe tor on the ac ve list.

LEAVING HIS MARK• Through his three-plus seasons, QB Eric Dungey holds or shares 14 team records (see right).• In addi on to those marks, he's closing in on more. His 590 career comple ons are second all- me at Syracuse, trailing only Ryan Nassib (791), and his 6,874 career passing yards are fourth in the Orange record book, behind Donovan McNabb (8,389), Marvin Graves (8,466) and Nassib (9,190).• Dungey's 61.7 career comple on percentage places him second in that category in Syracuse history, behind Greg Paulus (.677) who played just one season for the Orange in 2009.• A er tying a school record by tossing fi ve TD passes against Wagner, Dungey ranks fourth with 47 touchdown throws. Graves (48), Nassib (70) and McNabb (77) are ahead of him.

ORANGE AMONG MOST EXPERIENCED O-LINES• Syracuse's off ensive linemen boast 110 career starts, not including redshirt senior Koda Mar n's start at ght end when he was a sophomore at Texas A&M. That number ranks third in the ACC and ed for eighth na onally. Wisconsin (161) leads the FBS, while Wake Forest (141) tops the conference.• Redshirt junior G Evan Adams and senior OT Cody Conway have the team lead with 22 starts. Conway has started 19 games in a row, while Adams' streak of 22 straight fi rst-string appearances was snapped against Wagner.• In 2017, Syracuse started the same front fi ve in all 12 games. When the fi rst unit was in the game, the group of Adams, Conway C Airon Servais, G Sam Heckel and OT Jamar McGloster played together for all but 20 snaps over the course of the season. • McGloster is the lone departure, while Syracuse brings back G Aaron Roberts, who missed all of last year due to an off season knee injury. • Overall, the 2018 Syracuse squad has six players (Conway, Roberts, Servais, Adams, Heckel and Mar n) with at least a season's worth of the starts in the ACC or SEC. That level of experience is nearly unprecedented at Syracuse. The Orange have not returned fi ve players with at least one year of star ng experience since 1989, when Syracuse retained Mike Bernard, Gary McCummings, John Flannery, Blake Bednarz and Turnell Simms from a 1988 squad that went 10-2 and fi nished No. 13 in the AP Poll.• The front fi ve proved their worth in the season opener at Western Michigan, paving the way for a ground a ack that produced 334 yards and fi ve rushing touchdowns. • The unit has surrendered three sacks in two games, one every 21 pass a empts.

STRICKLAND THE PASS-CATCHER• Dontae Strickland may be one of the na onal leaders in rushing touchdowns, but he's also been an excep onal weapon in the passing game for Syracuse.• Senior RB Dontae Strickland has 51 career recep ons, the most of any ac ve ACC running back by a wide margain.• In 2017, Strickland snagged 18 passes for a personal-best 142 yards (7.9 avg.) and two touchdowns.• The Dayton, N.J. na ve needs 8 more recep ons to match Damie Rhodes (59) and Walter Reyes (59) for fi h on the school record list for most catches by a running back. • Antwon Bailey owns the Syracuse record for recep ons by a running back with 92 from 2008-11.

NEAL REACHES 1,000 YARDS• Junior RB Moe Neal became the 45th player in Syracuse history with 1,000 career rushing yards with his 71-yard eff ort against Wagner on Sept. 8. Neal has exactly 1,000 yards on 198 carries (5.1 avg.) heading into Saturday's game with Florida State.• Teammate Dontae Strickland is one of those 44 players with 1,000 career rushing yards at Syracuse. Strickland enters Saturday's game with 1,202 career yards, while QB Eric Dungey is one of six quarterbacks at Syracuse to make the list. Dungey has 1,483 yards rushing.

CUSTIS CATCHES TOUCHDOWNS• Redshirt senior WR Jamal Cus s has three touchdown recep ons through the fi rst two games, one more than he had in 27 games coming into the season.• His three TD grabs are ed with Wake Forest's Alex Bachman for the ACC lead and ed for eighth na onally.• Hawaii's Cedric Byrd and John Ursua lead the na on with fi ve touchdown recep ons, but Hawaii has played three games thus far.

DUNGEY RUNS TO RECORD• Senior QB Eric Dungey rushed for 200 yards on 15 carries (13.3 avg.), a school-record for a Syracuse quarterback at Western Michigan. He also became the fourth signal-caller in ACC history with a 200-yard game.• Dungey rushing total was 44 yards more than the previous Orange record (156 - Terrel Hunt vs. Maryland, 2014 and Bill Hurley vs. Northwestern, 1979).• Dungey's performance stands as the best single-game mark in the FBS for a quarterback so far this season. It's also the top rushing total for any player in the ACC.

RECEIVER'S PARADISE• Since head coach Dino Babers arrived on campus for the 2016 season, the Syracuse receiving corps has made its mark in the na onal rankings and shredded the school and conference record books.• The Orange have had two players fi nish in the top eight na onally in recep ons per game in each of the past two seasons. In 2016, Amba E a-Tawo was seventh (7.8) and Ervin Philips was eighth (7.2). Last season, Steve Ishmael ranked second (8.8) and Philips was fi h (7.4).• Under Babers, Syracuse receivers have posted fi ve of the top six highest single-game recep on totals in the 128-year history of the program, including Philips smashing the ACC record with 17 at NC State in 2017.• E a-Tawo and Ishmael each were both unanimous All-ACC First Team selec ons and earned All-America honors from a host of selectors.

NOTED IMPROVEMENT• Throught two games in Year 3 of Brian Ward's system, the Orange defense made strides in several key sta s cal categories, including points allowed per game, total rushing defense, third-down defense, and takeaways.• Syracuse saw major growth during the fi rst nine games of 2017 when the Orange were one of the most improved units in the country, and Ward received a nomina on for the Broyles Award as college football's top assistant coach.• Ward experienced a similar spike in produc on during his two-year s nt at Bowling Green. In 2015, the Falcons surrendered 4.6 fewer points and nearly 76 yards less of total off ense per game than they did in 2014. • In addi on, Bowling Green allowed 39 fewer fi rst downs and moved up the NCAA sta s cal rankings in passing defense (up 44 spots), rushing defense (up 20 spots), scoring defense (up 22 spots)and total defense (up 29 spots).

THIRD-DOWN DEFENSE• Syracuse fi nished the season ranked 13th na onally in third-down defense (.311) last year, a mark that ranked fourth in the ACC. It was a drama c improvement from 2016, when Syracuse ranked 11th in the ACC and 82nd in the FBS (.414).• The Orange picked up right where they le off so far this year and rank 18th na onally in third-down defense (.250).• Syracuse limited Western Michigan to 2-of-10 (.200) on third down and Wagner to 5-of-18 (.278). • In 2017, the Orange held eight of its opponents to three or fewer third-down conversions. Only Louisville (9), Boston College (8), Wake Forest (8) and LSU (7) converted more than three third downs against the Orange last season.

TAKETH AWAY• A er going the fi nal eight games of 2017 without an intercep on, Syracuse has already eclipsed their en re season total from a year ago (4), with fi ve picks on the year through Week 2.• Syracuse ranks second na onally and leads the ACC in intercep ons.• DB Andre Cisco (3), LB Kielan Whitner (1) and DL/LB Tyrell Richards (1) all have intercep ons this season.• Syracuse is +3 in turnover magin on the year and have turned those opponent miscues into 24 points.• In 2017, Syracuse only had one game last where it won the turnover ba le (Middle Tennessee), tying four other mes, and losing seven. Syracuse has already won the turnover ba le in both games this season.

THE 'CISCO KID'• Freshman DB Andre Cisco is ed atop the na onal leaderboard FBS in a pair of sta s cal categories.• He's registered three intercep ons, which is tops in the na on, ed with only Cal's Jaylinn Hawkins.• Cisco is one of three ACC players with mul ple intercep ons so far this season, joining Virginia Tech's Caleb Farley and Florida State's Kyle Meyers. • Farley is the only other freshman in the na on with mul ple intercep ons this season.• Cisco is also ed with a host of players for the na onal lead in passes defended with fi ve.

ORANGE CRUSH• A week a er Wagner ran for 281 yards versus Bowie State, Syracuse held the Seahawks to 41 yards on the ground on 41 carries (1.0 avg.).• The 41 yards allowed are the fewest in the Dino Babers era and least amount of rushing yards the Orange have allowed since the 2015 season opener, when Syracuse held Rhode Island to four yards.• Wagner RB Ryan Fulse, who ran for 271 yards and three touchdowns in the Bowie State game, managed just 47 yards on 21 carries (2.2 avg.).

SLAYTON MOVES WEIGHT• Syracuse fans have watched DT Chris Slayton bulldoze his way through off ensive linemen for the last three seasons, but recently with a pair of viral weight room videos, they've seen how he does it.• In February, Slayton squa ed a personal-best 700 pounds. That amount of weight is approximatly what a moderately-sized grand piano weighs and around what two adult gorillas weigh.• Later this spring, he squa ed 670 pounds for three reps, another personal best.

SZMYT STILL PERFECT• Redshirt freshman K Andre Szmyt got the nod at placekicker in the opener at Western Michigan.• He was a perfect 7-for-7 on PATs and 2-for-2 on fi eld goals. He followed that up with two more fi eld goals – including a career-long, 50-yarder – and eight PATs in the win over Wagner.• Szmyt's eight PATs against Wagner ed Nate Trout for fi h on the Orange's single-game record list. Trout hit against East Carolina in 1997.• Szmyt leads the ACC and ranks 10th na onally in scoring at 13.5 points per game.

RILEY THE RETURNER• Junior WR Sean Riley is in his third season as Syracuse's primary kickoff return man.• Riley is second among FBS players for most kickoff returns (83) and third for most kickoff return yards (1,821). Those totals also rank second and third, respec vely, in the Orange career record book. SMU's CJ Sanders leads the na on in both categories.• The Los Angeles, Calif. na ve has 12 returns of more than 30 yards in his career. • In 2016, Riley set the ACC single-game (10) and single-season (53) records for most kickoff returns. Riley's 10 runbacks occurred in fi nale at Pi sburgh, a game that featured a combined 137 points.• Riley also led the NCAA in kickoff return yardage as a freshman with 1,095 yards.

KICKER'S NIGHTMARE• Syracuse forced a trio of special teams miscues against Wagner – highlighted by a blocked punt return touchdown. WR Sean Riley recorded his second career blocked punt late in the fi rst half. The ball landed in the hands of DB Trill Williams who ran it into the end zone from two yards out for the fi rst special teams touchdown under head coach Dino Babers.• In addi on, TE Ravian Pierce forced a fumble on an a empted Wagner punt, and the Seahawks dropped a snap on a fi eld-goal a empt to end another possession.

PICKING UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF• The Orange were 10th in the country in net pun ng average (41.3) and fourth in punt return yardage (2.67 ypr) defense in 2017.• Syracuse is excelling both categories again this season. The Orange are currently 10th in net pun ng average (43.8) and are one of 21 FBS teams to not allow an opponent punt return in 2018.• Last season, the punt coverage team set program records for fewest punts returned (9) and fewest punt return yards (24), be ering the previous standards of 13 returns (1995) and 72 yards allowed (1992).• Syracuse was sixth in the na on (No. 1 among Power-Five Schools) in fewest opponent return yards, trailing Arkansas State (8), Toledo (14), Miami Ohio (15), UTSA (23) and Memphis (23).

SEEKING A SPARK ON THE RETURN• While new rule changes likely make it more diffi cult for kickoff return men, if the Orange are able to run a kickoff back for a touchdown, it woud snap a drought that spans more than six seasons.• It's been 81 games and 285 kickoff returns since Dorian Graham last took one to the house for Syracuse versus West Virginia in 2011.• Syracuse's last punt return TD was much more recent. Electrifying receiver Brisly Es me returned two punts for touchdowns in 2015 and led the na on in punt return average (17.7) the following season.

FINDING THE END ZONE• Syracuse has 39 special teams touchdowns since 1992.• The most recent was DB Trill Williams' blocked punt return TD against Wagner in Week 2.• In 1997, Syracuse recorded six special teams scores, including four Quinton Spotwood punt return TDs.

COACHING CRADLE• Syracuse will face three teams in 2018 that are coached by former Orange assistants. They are: Western Michigan (Tim Lester), Connec cut (Randy Edsall) and Boston College (Steve Addazio). In addi on to serving as a coach for the Orange, Edsall also played at Syracuse, le ering as a senior in 1979.• Of the 130 FBS football programs, nine are coached by former Syracuse players or coaches. That's the most of any school in the country (total includes ins tu on's current head coach). Bowling Green ranks second with eight.• The es don't stop there. Two current NFL head coaches are former Syracuse coaches. Doug Marrone of the Jacksonville Jaguars was the Orange's head coach from 2009-12, while Detroit Lions head coach Ma Patricia was an off ensive graduate assistant at SU from 2001-03 before he joined the New England Patriots.

BABERS SHUFFLES COACHING ASSIGNMENTS• With the departure of Sean Lewis to be the head coach at Kent State, Dino Babers reshaped his coaching this past spring.• He elevated co-off ensive coordinator Mike Lynch to off ensive coordinator and running backs coach. Assistant head coach Kim McCloud went from coaching the receivers to mentoring the cornerbacks. Jus n Lus g added working with the outside receivers to his du es as special teams coordinator. Tight ends coach Reno Ferri now oversees the inside receivers, while Nick Monroe leads the Orange sa ies and nickelbacks.• Babers hired former Manvel (Texas) High School head coach Kirk Mar n as the as the program's 10th assistant coach in February. Mar n coaches the quarterbacks and is the father of redshirt senior OT Koda Mar n.

OVERTIME HISTORYSince the NCAA ins tuted its current over me rule in 1996, Syracuse owns a 9-7 (.563) overall record in over me.
