COLUMBIA’S STATUSThe Lions snapped a mini two-game slide and five-game losing streak against Division I opponents with a 98-73 victory at Maine Monday. Columbia buried a season-high 13 3-pointers and outrebounded the Black Bears, 46-36, in the win. Luke Petrasek netted 22 points, while Mike Smith added 21 for the second consecutive game.

ABOUT HOWARD• The Bison dropped its MEAC opener to Florida A&M Wednesday, 78-66, and have lost four consecutive games.• Howard was selected as the preseason MEAC favorites, but have faced an array of injuries to some of their top players.• James Daniel, the 2015-16 NCAA leader in points per game (27.1), returned to the lineup Wednesday after missing the team’s first 14 games due to a severly sprained ankle. He netted 24 points in his first game back.• James Miller, who also came back Wednesday after sitting out seven games due to injury, is averaging 16.4 points to lead the squad.• Charles Williams has played in all 15 contests and is posting 13.7 points per game. Solomon Mangham chips in 10.8 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds.• Howard has also faced Harvard, falling to the Crimson 67-46 on Dec. 30 in Cambridge.

SERIES HISTORYThe Lions and Bison will square off for just the second time Saturday. Columbia used 16 points and 11 rebounds from Luke Petrasek to claim a 72-59 victory on Dec. 28, 2015.

COLUMBIA VS. THE MEACThe Lions are 6-3 against teams currently in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Columbia’s most common foe is North Carolina Central, who they have faced three times (0-3). Columbia went 2-0 against the MEAC last season, topping Howard and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

KLEPTOMANIACSColumbia is averaging 10.5 steals over its past four games, which now puts them third in the Ivy League for the season (6.6). The Lions tied the program’s single-game record with 14 steals in its win over Manhattanville, on Dec. 11.

ON THE OFFENSIVEColumbia has been one of the strongest offensive teams in the Ivy League this season, leading the conference in field goal percentage (.469) and assists per game (17.0) while placing second in points per game (76.3). The Lions are coming off a season-high 98 points and 13 made 3-pointers at Maine. The point total was the most for Columbia against a Division I opponent since Nov. 15, 2010 when they scored 104 points in a win over Maryland-Eastern Shore.

IF I COULD BE LIKE MIKEFirst-year point guard Mike Smith has recorded 21 points in each of the last two contests and has dished out five assists in his last three games. Smith currently leads all Ivy League rookies in assists (3.6 APG) and 3-point field goal percentage (.455). Smith has started every game for the Lions and played a key role in Columbia’s opening night win. He netted 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and drilled a key 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down and drew a charge on the ensuing possesion to help seal the Lions’ victory.

#SCTOP10Nate Hickman’s electrifying dunk against UAlbany was featured on ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt’s segment, “The Best Thing I Saw Today” to lead off SportsCenter following the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30. The highlight was ranked as the No. 3 play on the SportsCenter Top-10 later that night.

LUKE SKYWALKERForward Luke Petrasek is having a strong senior campaign, averaging a team-best 15.1 points and 6.9 rebounds, which puts him fourth in the Ivy League. The East Northport, New York, native is shooting 93.9 percent (29-of-31) from the foul line, which is first in the conference and fifth in the NCAA. Petrasek netted a career-high 27 points against Hofstra on Nov. 29 and is the team’s leading returning scorer after posting 10.2 points on 44.2-percent shooting from downtown in 2015-16.

SLICK HICKJunior Nate Hickman has emerged as the Ivy League’s eighth leading scorer, averaging 14.5 points. After averaging just 3.8 points as a sophomore, he has scored 20 or more points in three games, including a career-best 30-point effort against Army West Point (Nov. 23), and drilled the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left in overtime against Colgate (Nov. 26). Hickman, the Ivy League Player of the Week (Nov. 28), became the first Lion other than Maodo Lo or Alex Rosenberg to record 30 points since 2011 when Noruwa Agho netted 31 against Brown.

BREAKING TRENDSColumbia’s first two victories this season held a little extra meaning. The Lions topped Quinnipiac for the first time in four tries on Nov. 21 and beacme the first non-conference opponent to beat Stony Brook at Island Federal Credit Union Arena in three seasons.

COBY SYSTEMSenior Jeff Coby made a strong return to the lineup at Quinnipiac after missing the first two games due to injury. Coby netted 12 points, five rebounds and tied a career-high with three blocked shots against the Bobcats.

A NIGHT OF FIRSTSIn addition to Smith making his collegiate debut against the Seawolves, fellow rookie guard Jake Killingsworth and junior Nate Hickman made their first career starts. Additionally, sophomore Rodney Hunter saw his first action for Columbia and netted six points on 3-of-3 shooting.

LET’S GET IT STARTEDColumbia improved to 78-38 all-time in season openers after posting a 73-66 victory at Stony Brook on Nov. 11.

ENGLES ERAHead coach Jim Engles became the first Lions coach to win his Columbia debut since Armond Hill in 1995. No stranger to Morningside Heights, Engles enters his first year on the Columbia sidelines after a successful eight-year stint with NJIT. Engles spent five years as an assistant coach under Joe Jones from 2003-08.

COACHING STAFF IVY LEAGUE “EDUCATED”Assistant coaches Jesse Agel and Jean Bain are also familiar with the Ivy League. Agel served as the head coach at Brown from 2008-12, while Bain is coming off a four-year stint as the associate head coach at Dartmouth.

#IVYMADNESSThe Ivy League will add men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to its slate of conference championships beginning in March 2017. The League’s Council of Presidents approved four-team tournaments in men’s and women’s basketball, with a one-game reduction for each team in the regular season. The tournaments will determine the conference’s automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships. The regular season champion will receive an automatic bid to the postseason NIT. The 2017 Ivy League Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments will both be held over the same two competition days, March 11 and 12, at The Palestra in Philadelphia. All six games will be broadcast live on ESPN’s networks.

COLUMBIA TOPS HOWARD, 72-59, IN FIRST-EVER MEETING BETWEEN SCHOOLS

NEW YORK - Four players scored in double-figures as Columbia improved its win-streak to five games after a 72-59 victory over Howard. Luke Petrasek led the way for the Lions (9-5) with 16 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Howard’s James Daniel, who came into the night as the nation’s leading scorer at 28.4 points per game, finished with 36 points on the strength of 16-of-17 shooting from the foul line.

Petrasek scored the first six points of the contest before Howard rattled off a 10-1 run to take a three-point lead with 14:33 remaining in the first half. CJ Davis scored six of his eight points during a five-minute stretch to help Columbia take a 15-14 lead at the 8:20 mark when Maodo Lo and Daniel stole the show.

Two of the most dynamic scorers in the country traded baskets but Lo’s trio of 3-pointers versus Daniel’s layups pushed the Lions’ lead to 24-18 with 6:55 before the break. Two more treys from Grant Mullins spurred a 9-2 run to help Columbia take a 38-25 advantage into the locker room.

Eight of the Lions 11 first half field goals came from beyond the arc.

Columbia led by double-digits the entire second half with Howard only able to close within 54-43 at the midway point of the period. Kyle Castlin was the catalyst on the offensive end, scoring all 11 of his points in the final 20 minutes.

REMEMBERING JIM McMILLANColumbia’s second all-time leading scorer, Jim McMillan ’70, passed away in May 2016 at the age of 68. McMillan starred for the 1968 Ivy League Championship squad and won the Haggerty Award, given to the top Division I player in the New York City Metropolitan area, three times. He went on to play nine years professionally in the NBA, winning the 1972 Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

BILL CAMPBELL’S NO. 67 FEATURED ON JERSEYSFor all of its 31 varsity sports, Columbia will wear a No. 67 patch on its uniform in honor of former Lion football player, coach, confidante and friend Bill Campbell, who passed away in April, 2016 at age 75. Campbell captained the 1961 Ivy League Championship football team. He returned to Columbia to coach the Columbia Football team for six seasons between 1974 and 1979. Campbell went on to make his mark in the business world, working for Kodak, Apple - where he rose to the level of executive vice president, and founded, served as President and CEO of Claris and became chairman of Intuit, the maker of Quicken, QuickenBooks and Turbo Tax. In the fall of 2014, the athletics program retired uniform number 67 – the number Campbell wore as an offensive lineman and linebacker - for all 31 of Columbia’s varsity teams.

2015 Metropolitan and Mid-Major Coach of the Year Jim Engles became the 23rd head coach in the 116-year history of men’s basketball program in April 2016.

Engles returns to Columbia after spending the past eight years as head coach for the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Over the past six seasons at NJIT, Engles compiled a 100-88 record, including back-to-back 20-win seasons the past two years. Prior to leading the Highlanders, Engles served as an assistant coach at Columbia under former head coach Joe Jones from 2003 to 2008.

NJIT had competed at the Division I level for only two seasons when Engles arrived in 2008, and in three years he turned them into a 15-win program. In 2014-15, he directed the Highlanders to a 21-12 record, including an upset at No. 16 Michigan and a postseason berth, advancing to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).

At the conclusion of the 2014-15 season, Engles was named John McLendon National Coach of the Year honors from CollegeInsider.com, received the Peter A. Carlesimo Division I co-Coach of the Year from the Metropolitan Writers Association and was a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year and Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year awards.

In 2015-16, Engles once again led the Highlanders to the semifinals of the CIT, where they faced the eventual champions, Columbia, at Levien Gym. His team also finished tied for second place in the America Sun Conference in its first year in the league.

In addition to the tremendous success over the past two years, Engles won a Great West regular season championship and was selected the Great West Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-13. In 2010-11, he picked up a vote for AP National Coach of the Year after NJIT posted a 15-15 record.

The success of Engles’ Highlanders squads culminated with NJIT committing to build a new $100 million Wellness and Events Center and receiving an invitation to join the Atlantic Sun Conference after spending two years without any conference affiliation.

In his first stint with the Lions, Engles helped Joe Jones turn around the Columbia program from a last-place finish in The Ivy League, into a consistent competitor in non-conference and league play, including the first .500 finish in league play since 1992-93.

Prior to joining Columbia as an assistant in 2003, Engles spent the previous six seasons at Rider University, where he was the top assistant coach for the Broncs under Don Harnum, as well as their recruiting coordinator. Rider’s basketball program enjoyed great success with Engles on staff, including winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title during the 2001-02 season and making the school’s first appearance in the postseason NIT in 1998.

Before joining Rider, Engles spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Wagner College. He assisted Tim Capstraw in guiding the Seahawks to the best winning-percentage turnaround in Division I basketball, going from four wins in 1991-92 to 16 in 1992-93. Wagner also recorded the most Division I wins in school history during that time, and competed against Rider for the Northeast Conference Championship in 1993 on national television.

A Staten Island native, from St. Peter’s High School, Engles played college basketball for Dickinson College, where he was a three-year letterwinner. He helped lead the Red Devils to the second-most single-season victories in school history at the time during the 1989-90 season. After graduating from Dickinson in 1990 with a B.A. in political science, he earned his M.B.A. from Wagner College in 1997.

His grandfather, Ken Engles, was a player and coach at Georgetown University, while his uncle, John Engles, was a high school All-American who went on to play at Penn under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Chuck Daly.
