Alexandra Knorr, CEO of Jetlounge originally comes from the Piston Business. Alexandra was a former directorwith Cirrus Sales & Service and General Enterprises in the Netherlands.

In 2015 she attained her type certificate in the Eclipse 550while holding fewer than 200 hours experience in a CirrusSR22. No other pilot has become type-rated in theEclipse with less total flying time.

Alexandra admitted that the type rating was hard work:"I had never flown a jet before I went in for my type-rating in the Eclipse and it was truly not easy".

However she makes the case for what Eclipse says is theway their airplane can be operated, and that any GA pilotcan make a good jet pilot.

What she wants to share with Europe is, "that the Eclipse550 is safe and easy to fly.“

ictor Girgenti, 58, is anengaging individual whoresponds to requests andquestions at lightning speed.

He manages to do this while flyingprivately and running his successful foodempire daily, single-handed. His businesssupplies the finest supermarkets with veryhigh quality cold cuts, deli cheeses anddeli salads with their customer’s nameon the label.

“For years most retailers would placethe worst quality product in their label,”Victor highlights. “I started my businessover twenty years ago – and changing themindset of the deli world has been anexperience!” The products Longviewmanufactures have the lowest sodiumlevels in the industry. “No fillers orextenders are ever used. MSG is not in anyproduct we produce. No artificialflavoring,” he notes.

All meat is from the US, and Victorprocesses it in a variety of different plantsacross the nation, keeping each species inseparate plants to avoid crosscontamination.

A decade ago, Victor’s business wasdoing well, so he started to make moreuse of his winter home in West PalmBeach, Florida (he lives in Sands Point,New York, a wonderful harbor town justoutside New York City).

“The reason I started to take flyinglessons was that when we used to chartera jet before I was able to fly, I would watchthe pilots and worry that if they had eaten,let’s say a bad fish for dinner and had anattack of food poisoning, it might behelpful to know how to yell ‘HELP’ on theradio,” (Victor would charter a private jetto take his wife and two Labradors, Callieand Hobbie, to Florida).

“After the first lesson, and since mygolf game had not improved for 20 years,I decided to keep taking flying lessons,”Victor recalls. “Of course had it not beenfor Callie and Hobbie, I never would havechartered a jet to begin with. Thanks tothose two most wonderful dogs I came torealize that private flying would alsochange my life and business. I now doanimal rescue missions with the Eclipse500 I own, bringing dogs from kill sheltersin the south to sanctuaries in the

northeastern states.” Victor never dreamthe would one day fly himself to Florida.But he stayed the course working his wayfrom a Cessna T182T, to a Columba 400,to a Piper Meridian and for the last twoyears has owned an Eclipse 500 TE (TotalEclipse). Today, he flies to his clients alongthe eastern seaboard of the US, fromFlorida to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Victor doesn’t mass produce, and ishappy trading with those who appreciatehis level of quality. “Being able to jumpinto the Eclipse, go, and return quicklymakes optimum efficiency possible.”

Out and Home in a DayPreviously, Victor was flying commerciallyon a regular basis to one customer inJacksonville, Florida. “I was flying toomuch. You would think from NYC toJacksonville there would be many flightsdaily. That’s not the case, and most tripsthere required a departure the day beforethe meeting. If the meeting ran late, I hadto spend another night in Jacksonvillebefore flying home on the airlines.

“Now I wake up in my own bed, enjoy aworkout, check the stock markets, checkemails and drive to my local airport,” hesmiles. “I put my car into my hangar andfly off to Jacksonville. Two hours later I amthere in plenty of time for the meeting.Afterwards, I’m back home in another twohours and having dinner with my wife.Flying yourself is worth every penny.”

Working from home, every hour countsfor Victor. As we spoke, he was preparingto fly to Atlanta, Georgia for a convention,offering a ride to one of his largercustomers. “They get so excited to see theairplane and can't believe I’m the pilot.They’re amazed that we walk onto theaircraft and go. No taking-off shoes ormetal detectors. The flight starts when weare ready. This blows them away!”

Highlighting the sheer flexibilityafforded him by his business jet, Victorrecalls, “Last year I needed toattend the sameconvention when it wasin Denver, Colorado. Iflew in on Saturday,dined with customers,attended the conventionon Sunday, and quickly

realized I had seen enough. Whileoriginally I was planning to stay and attendthe convention a few more days, because Ihave my own aircraft I got up Mondaymorning, called the airport and asked thatmy airplane be fueled and ready fordeparture within 30 minutes.

“If I was on an airline, the effort andadded cost to do something like thatwould be huge. While everyone else wasstill in Denver, I was back at my desk doingimportant business.”

Why the Eclipse?Victor feels that the Eclipse is his perfectvehicle. “It is fast at 375 knots, and able tofly way above the weather with a ceiling of41,000’,” he enthuses. “It is comfortable,and very quiet - normal volumeconversation is not a problem, and in factno headsets are offered to the passengers.

“Best of all is the lack of fuel burn - tripsfrom New York City to West Palm Beach,Florida only burn 190 gallons,” he adds.

Victor’s business philosophy is built onthe belief that every call, email or textneeds to be answered within minutes.Delaying an hour is not an option – thus hehas taken care to select an aircraft withsufficient in-flight connectivity so that hecan be productive while flying. “Being intouch in the air is a must,” he concludes.“Customers don't care where you are, aslong as you respond quickly. Being able todo so, and the time savings made possibleby flying to your schedule, are the ultimateadvantages of Business Aviation.”

Victor has a simple, but effective sidelinebusiness that he feels gives back to theindustry that has helped him so much.“Manufacturers such as Piper buildaircraft that use the same airframe for bothpiston (gas burning) and turbine (jet fuelburning) airplanes,” he notes. “The folksthat fill the airplanes with fuel at theairports don't always know which engineis installed - and if they make a mistakeand place the wrong fuel-type in anaircraft the results can be deadly.

A simple warning system was neededto alert these line-people as to what type offuel was needed in an aircraft. “I inventedand market a product called FuelTape - aroll of tape that states the type of fuel thatthe aircraft needs, or should not be fueledwith. The pilot, after landing, tears off apiece of this tape and places it over thefuel cap so the line people need to removeit before fueling.

What are the Pros and Cons toConsider Before Buying One?

Because of its popularity and the steadydemand for the Falcon 50 since its 1980 intro-duction, there have been several upgradesdeveloped for this versatile business jet, notesJohn Koltes, President & Owner, Jet TraderGroup ……..

The performance of its three TFE731-3-1D enginesallows this midsize Falcon 50 to take off from mostairports with runways of 5,000’ or longer, and onceairborne, carry its passengers an impressive3,147nm, providing transcontinental reach withinthe US.

However, when purchasing a Falcon 50 there areseveral factors for a buyer to consider. “A key con-sideration for prospective Falcon 50 owners ischecking the maintenance status of the airplane,”reveals John Koltes, Jet Trader Group.

“The maintenance status of an aircraft can makethe value fluctuate by as much as $1.0m. The twobig maintenance expenses on the Falcon 50 arethe 12-year gear overhaul requirement and the 6-year ‘C’ check airframe inspection. A prospectivebuyer should be aware of these as well as whenthey will come due on a prospective purchase.”Koltes also encourages prospective buyers to con-sider purchasing a Falcon 50 that has upgraded

engines and avionics. These aircraft will sell foraround $600-800k more than the unimproved models and offer new owners a turn-key solution tomodern avionics. “As new avionics mandates arerequired, the more modern avionics suites willinvoke less downtime and expense to meet thosemandates,” noted Koltes.

The original Falcon 50 was delivered with an analogue Collins avionics package, but has sincegone through several changes to include CollinsEFIS 86, Proline II, Proline IV and most recently –and still readily available – the Proline 21 avionicssuite, which provides flight crews the advantages ofa modern, fully integrated glass flight deck. “Pilotsituational awareness is dramatically improved withthe Proline 21 suite, therefore improving safety, andmaking it a must-have for any purchaser consider-ing a Falcon 50,” Koltes outlines.

Powerplants Similar to the avionics, there havebeen several engine upgrades made available forthe Falcon 50. The original engines are HoneywellTFE731-3-1D series engines, which provide3,700lbs of thrust and require hot section inspec-tions (MPI) every 1,400 hours and an engine over-haul (CZI) every 4,200 hours.

The -3D-1C, -4-1C, and TFE731-40 engineupgrades offer the Falcon 50 owner better perform-ance, increased fuel efficiencies, longer range, andreduced maintenance costs while changing theinspection requirements for the MPI inspection to a2,100-hour interval. Thus only one hot sectioninspection is required between engine overhauls,saving a prospective owner significant maintenanceoutlay.

The -3D-1C engine upgrade was performed on

several early Falcon 50s, while the TFE731-40 wasa standard installation on Falcon 50EX models.Most engines are either enrolled on theManufacturer’s Service Plan (MSP) or Jet SupportServices, Incorporated (JSSI) engine plans. A summary of the differences in the engine performance parameters can be seen in Table A(below).

Cabin ConfigurationWith an interior measuring 23.5ft (length) x 6.1ft(width) x 5.9ft (height), the typical cabin for a Falcon50 model accommodates nine passengers.Configurations vary, but most consist of a forwardgalley, forward four-place executive club seats, andaft two-place club seats across from a three-placedivan. “The most desirable configuration alsoincludes a lavatory located in the aft cabin,” Koltesadds. “Occupants’ baggage is never an issue whenyou consider the extra-large external baggage compartment.”

Market SummaryFalcon 50s are available in a wide price range fromaround $1.0-7.4m, and from the details postedabove, you can see what contributes to the variation in price from one model to the next. Early model Falcon 50 prices appear to have lev-elled off in the market while the later modelscontinue to see quarterly price declines, accordingto Vref. “With the upgrades available for the earlymodels, prospective owners can find great value inan early model Falcon 50 with engines upgraded tothe -3D-1C status, and a Proline 21 avionics suitecan be purchased for under $2.0m,” summarizesKoltes. “At that price point, a new owner can pur-chase a great aircraft, add some more value to thejet with winglet options and advanced cabin entertainment systems, and still pay less than theywould for a late model Falcon 50.

“During its lifetime, the Falcon 50 has proven to bea reliable, stable platform with a great following,”Koltes concludes. “Owners continue to prove thevalue of the airplane, and charter companies continue to see the demand for the benefits that theFalcon 50 has to offer their clientele. The Falcon 50is an aircraft with plenty of life left in it yet.”

BIZAV MARKET INDICATORSEuropeanTransaction Levels Stable

London-based Colibri Aircraft recently publisheda report on business aircraft sales activity during 2015; a year characterized by large pricedecreases but a stable level of transactions interms of the number of aircraft sold.

While aircraft sales in the USA remained strong during 2015, Europe was a net seller of aircraft withthe three largest markets (Germany, UK andFrance) all seeing their private jet fleets shrink asthe trend towards sales to the US continued.

Mid-size aircraft (i.e. Citation Excel and the XLS)held their values quite well and saw a large declinein available inventory as buyers realised the valuethese aircraft offer. Light Jets held up well in termsof the number of transactions with the CitationMustang being the highest-selling aircraft toEuropean buyers. The Citation Bravo was the second highest selling aircraft in Europe.

There were some sectors that saw major changes.For example the large aircraft market went frombeing quite resilient to seeing some of the largestprice discounts.

Of the top 10 selling aircraft to European buyers,seven were light jets, one was mid-size and twowere large cabin aircraft. The high sale of light jetsis largely attributable to the incredible value theyrepresent.

There were some reasons to be positive. 2015 sawa number of transactions by European buyers forsmaller and older aircraft with European lendersproviding aircraft finance. Lack of finance has beena huge issue in recent years and the entry of thebanks into the older European private aircraft market is a very positive indicator toward a muchmore buoyant market. Hopefully this trend will seemore buyers coming to the market.

Forward-Looking…So what can be expected for 2016? “We believe the large price decreases of 2015 will continue into2016,” predicts Oliver Stone, MD, Colibri Aircraft.“However, there will still be strong transaction numbers as the aircraft on offer are of such goodvalue, particularly among the 8+ year-old aircraftthat have seen the bulk of their depreciationalready. Markets are tough, but deals are happen-ing. Vigilance and persistence will be the name ofthe game in 2016.”

DassaultAviation confirmed atwo-year delayand productionstandstill on its all-newFalcon 5Xbecause of ongoing problems with the Snecma Silvercrest engine.

The long-range, large-cabin jet which was rolled out in June last year is now not expected to fly until 2017, with first deliveries in early 2020. 5X customers have been informed and though thecompany will not reveal backlog details for the aircraft, chief executive Eric Trappier says heexpects “some order erosion” and states the company will try to offer “other solutions” to buyersexpecting an aircraft before 2020.

University Rector Giuseppe Paolisso conferred the HonoraryDegree on Professor Pascale.

Tecnam has announced that Italy’s leadinguniversity, Seconda Università of Naples (SUN)has conferred on Professor Luigi Pascale, itshighest accolade, an Honorary Doctorate inAerospace Engineering.

Professor Pascale at 92 still actively leads theTecnam Research and Design Team and iscurrently working on the production and imminent rollout of his very Tecnam latest aircraftdesign the next-generation 11 seats P2012Traveller.

The award ceremony was held at the “Aulario” of the Faculty of Engineering at SUN, Aversa,Italy.

University Rector Giuseppe Paolisso conferredthe Honorary Degree on Professor Pascale, “fora career that goes much beyond the excel-lence”. The ceremony ended with the “newlyappointed” Aerospace Engineer Luigi Pascale’s‘Lectio Magistralis’. Ever forward looking,Professor Pascale’s talk was on the future ofsupersonic transport after Concorde!

Luigi “Gino” Pascale is a native of Naples, Italy,whose passion for aviation began during the1930’s when with his brother Giovanni “Nino”they won many model plane races. The twobrothers built their first aircraft, the P48 Astore,which flew on the 2nd of April 1951.

At the time the Professor Luigi had just graduated with a MasterDegree as a MechanicalEngineer (the Department ofAeronautical Engineeringwas created later by theProfessor Pascale himself)and started his career at theUniversity of Naples asassistant of ProfessorNobile. Umberto Nobile wasalso an outstanding aviationcharacter, undertaking thefirst expedition to North Pole with an airship.

Gaining his Pilot’s License is 1951; Professor Pascaledesigned and built a number

of competition winning ‘race’ planes includingthe P55 Tornado.

Founding PARTENAVIA in 1957 he beganbuilding General Aviation planes ‘for everyone’.Aircraft such as the P64 Oscar and P66 becamebestsellers and firm favorites as training aircraftand led to his innovative P68 light twin design.PIC 2 CAPTION – Professor Pascale’s firstdesign the P92 has now flown 200,000 hourswith over 2,500 in service worldwide.

ORDERSPiper receives Ordersfor an additional 15 Piper Archers from ATP Flight School

Piper Aircraft has announced the order of 15 additional Archer TXs to ATP Flight School.The delivery comes as part of the original three-year agreement made in April of 2013 for up to 100 aircraft.

ATP, America's largest flight school, specializesin airline pilot training and pilot career develop-ment. The school initially agreed to purchase afleet of 15 Piper Archer TX single-engine, piston-powered advanced training aircraft fordelivery in late 2013, with the option for 85 additional Archers.

"This follow-on fleet transaction is a display ofATP's ongoing confidence in Piper Aircraft," said Piper President and CEO Simon Caldecott. "Our training aircraft continue to impress students and instructors, delivering unmatchedperformance with countless hours of flightschool training around the world." ATP Piper Archers are primarily utilized by ATP'sAirline Career Pilot Programstudents. This program provides students with anairline-sponsored careertrack from zero experience toairline pilot job in just twoyears, demanding a techno-logically advanced and reli-able training platform tomeet the professional training objectives of the program. Satisfying this role,the Archer has easily inte-grated into ATP's fleet andprovides students with a

seamless transition to ATP's multi-engine fleet ofover 100 similarly equipped Piper Seminoles.

As the need for more single-engine Piper trainingaircraft increases, ATP has been exercising theiroption to take additional Archers - continuing totransition to a predominately Piper training aircraft fleet. All of the new ATP airplanes under the agreement with Piper will be equipped withGarmin G500 glass cockpit avionics suites. The G500 is a PFD/MFD dual-screen electronicflight display. Dual 6.5-in. Flight Design GmbH, based in Germany, said in a news release it has applied for "a plannedreceivership which allows for reorganization ofthe company." The filing will enable the companyto deal with a "liquidity crunch."

Tom Peghiny, CEO of Flight Design USA, toldAVweb that his company is separate and independent from Flight Design GmbH, but thesituation in Germany does have an impact. "We couldn't get aircraft from [Germany] for nearly two years," he said. "We negotiated to beable to buy our airplanes and parts fromAeroJones [a Taiwanese company operating inChina]. Those negotiations were successful, andwe expect to take delivery of the first airplanesfrom China next month." AeroJones will be ableto meet his needs for U.S. deliveries of two tothree CTLS series aircraft per month, Peghinysaid, and also can supply parts for the currentfleet.

Peghiny added that he has orders and depositsin place for airplanes from Germany, "so we areactually creditors" of Flight Design GmbH. He said none of those airplanes on order weredestined for U.S. customers, but were to go tothe U.S. dealer network. Flight Design GmbHemploys about 20 workers in Germany andabout 100 at its production plant in Ukraine. The company was founded in 1988 and hasdelivered about 1,500 aircraft.

Friedrichshafen – Innovations, premieres and new products – General aviation will be out in fullforce at Lake Constance:

More than 600 companies from around the worldwill ensure a strong showing at the AERO, theglobal show for general aviation, from April 20 to23, 2016. The spectrum of general aviation isbroad: vintage gliders, single- and multi-enginepiston-driven airplanes, helicopters, gyrocopters,turboprops and multi-engine jets will be on display. Drones, new aircraft engines and avionics, aviation accessories and services, aswell as flight school offerings round out the program.

At the same time, the special theme areas e-flight-expo, Avionics Avenue, Engine Area andAERODrones RPAS EXPO will feature new con-tent.

With the slogan “Be a pilot”, the AERO is promot-ing the dream of flight and thereby motivating thenext generation of pilots.

Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann andAERO project leader Roland Bosch are purpose-fully focusing on new impulses: “a technically-oriented trade show like the AERO must alsoshow how fascinating the subject of flight is,”emphasized Roland Bosch. That is why encouraging the next generation of pilots is also

a major goal of the Messe Friedrichshafen team.For this reason, for the first time, entrance to theshow will be free of charge for all visitors under16 years old, something which previously onlyapplied to young people under 14.

For the established producers of powered aircraft, a lot of attention will be centered on traditional single and twin-engine piston-drivenaircraft. Markedly lower prices for Avgas aviationfuel as a result of the plunge in oil prices aremaking flying cheaper again. At the same time,

low fuel prices are also making it more affordablefor new pilots to learn to fly single-engine aircraftand for experienced pilots to improve their credentials by acquiring multi-engine ratings,which allow them to fly multi-engine aircraft.

Ultralights are the booming segment of general aviation. This class includes powered aircraft withtake-off weights of up to 472 kilograms, but also gliders, gyrocopters and helicopters. There ismore innovation here than in any other area ofgeneral aviation, not least because, next to gliding, flying ultralights is the most affordableway to fly, both in terms of operating costs andlicense costs.

There are also new products to see among thejets. The innovative HondaJet, with its veryunconventional nacelle placement above thewing, has already gotten final approval for operation in Europe.

completely new business jet, which will be displayed as a mockup at Lake Constance, is thesingle-jet Vision SF50 from Cirrus Aircraft.

Following operating approval, which is expectedshortly, it will be the world’s first business jet tobe delivered with a parachute rescue systemstandard. A twin-engine Legacy 450 from Brazil’sEmbraer Executive Jets will make its German premiere at the AERO. In addition, many morebusiness jets from respected manufacturers in North and South America as well as Europewill be on display at Lake Constance.

The e-flight Expo, featuring alternative drive concepts, will also take place for the eight time,under the motto “Electrical, Ecological,Evolutionary.” Electrically powered ultralights,powered gliders and rotary wing aircraft will be itsfocus. Several innovative machines will be thehighlight of 2016. The most unconventional electrically powered aircraft is the velocopter,which celebrated its premiere at the AERO twoyears ago. In the meantime, this 18-rotor, two-person aerial vehicle has undergone multipleunmanned test flights, and flight testing using atest pilot is scheduled to begin soon. Engineering conglomerate Siemens will be showing two vehicles that feature the German company’s powerful electric drives.

UK's 'Greatest Pilot' Eric Brown Dies At 97 Many tributes have been made for Captain Eric Brown - the Navy's most decorated pilot - following his death aged 97. Dubbed Britain'sgreatest pilot, Capt Brown died on Sunday at EastSurrey Hospital following a short illness, his family said in a statement.

The veteran, who wasborn in Leith inEdinburgh and latermoved to Sussex, hadflown 487 types of aircraft and held threeGuinness WorldRecords in a careerspanning 31 years. He was the first Navalpilot to land a jet on anaircraft carrier and held the record for the most carrier deck landings at 2,407.

Capt Brown, who was known as ‘Winkle’, cheateddeath on a number of occasions, surviving beingsunk by a U-boat in 1941, and later being shot at andinjured by a German long-range bomber. First SeaLord Admiral Sir George Zambellas said CaptBrown's death was a huge loss.

He said: "The Fleet Air Arm may have lost one of itsfinest and best known pilots, but British aviation haslost something even greater - the most accomplishedtest pilot of his generation and perhaps of all time,and a huge advocate of military aviation."

British astronaut Tim Peake tweeted from space: "So sad to hear that Capt Eric 'Winkle' Brown hasdied - to my mind the greatest test pilot who has everlived. A true inspiration." Paul Beaver, a friend of CaptBrown's for decades, said: "For a man who hadachieved so much in one lifetime, he was modestand self-effacing yet always ready to help." Capt Brown is survived by his partner Jean KellyBrown and son Glen.

G-AKDN hasbeen invited to participate at many events.KDN was shipped back to the UK in Nov. 2015 tobe prepared to attend these events during thesummer of 2016. The plans are to leave the aircraft in the UK, where it may continue to fly and represent the beginning of the type.

A true composite propeller is made from carbonfiber or Kevlar. "Unlike aluminum or wooden blades,Hartzell's composite propeller blades can berestored to their original dimensions over and overagain. These materials are incredibly durable, butthey are not entirely immune to damage," saysHartzell Technical Representative Kevin Ryan.

"Don't be concerned if you experience minor dam-age from debris, such as a stone nick, paint dam-age, or a lead edge impact," he says. "As with alu-minum blades, composite blade damage can beevaluated and often repaired on-wing by a certifiedAirframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic usinginformation provided by Hartzell."

BP has been recognised as one of the best per-forming companies in Albania by the President of Albania, Bujar Nishani, who presented the“Special Civil Merit Award” to Fabio Amatucci, Air BP Central Mediterranean Cluster Manager,at a reception for leading members of theAlbanian business community on the 19 February.

BP’s presence in Albania is concerned predominately with Air BP activity and it has grown its operations there significantly since itstarted over 22 years ago with Air BP supplying aviation fuel at Tirana International Airport Mother Theresa. In 1993 the airport handled

approximately 130,000 passengers and todayover 1.8 million pass through.

In this time Air BP overcame numerous challenges to ensure fuel quality and safe operations. One of the greatest tests was the Kosovo conflict. Air BP had to transform its

infrastructure to meet a ten-fold increase in demandcreated by military air opera-tions andsolve a range oflogistical issues to ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply.

Since then Air BP has continued to invest in improving safety and efficiency. In 2002 Air BP started bringing in fuel by sea to overcome the risks of transporting it by road from Greece. In 2011 it started operating a fuel farm within the airport boundary which had been built to the highest international standards.

In 2003 BP became a founding member of the Albanian British Chamber of Commerce(ABCCI).

The company regularly works with the local community supporting education initiatives.

AVIONICS REPORTAEA Unveils 2015Year-end Avionics Market Report- Strong fourth quarter pushes total year-end salesbeyond $2.4 billion The Aircraft Electronics Association released its 2015year-end Avionics Market Report. Total worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales for theyear amounted to $2,416,438,987.42, or more than $2.4 billion. The figure represented a 4.4 percentdecrease in sales compared to the previous year asreported by the participating companies in 2014.

*- Note that the 2015 year-end totals do not exactly equal the sumof the four quarterly amounts as reported earlier in the year. Thisvariance is the result of seasonally adjusted year-end numbers bysome of the participants. In addition, the number of companiesthat participate in the AEA Avionics Market Report may change ona quarterly and/or annual basis. This may occur due to mergersand acquisitions during the year along with new companies par-ticipating in the reporting process. Any comparative analysis ofthe data should take this variance into consideration.

The dollar amount reported (using net sales price, notmanufacturer's suggested retail price) includes: all business and general aviation aircraft electronic sales --including all component and accessories in cockpit/cabin/software upgrades/portables/certified and noncertified aircraft electronics; all hardware (tip to tail);batteries; and chargeable product upgrades from theparticipating manufacturers. The amount does notinclude repairs and overhauls, extended warranty or

subscription services. Of the more than $2.4 billion insales in 2015, 50.9 percent came from forward-fit (avionics equipment installed by airframe manufacturersduring original production) sales, or more than $1.2 billion. The forward-fit market accounted for 51.4 percentof total sales in 2014 and 54.1 percent of total sales in2013.

By contrast, the retrofit (avionics equipment installed after original production) market showed an increase inits percentage of total sales for the third straight year.Retrofit sales amounted to 49.1 percent of sales in 2015,while the retrofit market accounted for 48.6 percent oftotal sales in 2014 and 45.9 percent of total sales in 2013.According to the companies that separated their totalsales figures between North America (U.S. and Canada)and other international markets, 64.2 percent of the 2015sales volume occurred in North America (U.S. andCanada), while 35.8 percent took place in other international markets.

"As noted earlier this year, the report showed some softness insales during the first nine months of 2015, as sales were down 7.5 percent compared to the first nine months of 2014," said AEAPresident Paula Derks. "However, that trend reversed itself during the fourth quarter, as sales topped $653 million, a 7.2increase from the $609 million in sales during the last three monthsof 2014. Despite the positive surge late in the year, our industryreported a 4.4 percent decline in year-over-year sales from 2014.Another interesting note is the fact that total sales are now nearlyevenly split between the retrofit and forward-fit markets."

The company also launched the Bell 407GXPand announced the largest helicopter order inBell Helicopter history for 200 407GXPs to AirMethods Corporation. The first of those aircraftwere delivered in January 2016.

Advancements to the Bell 412 helped secure amajor win in Japan and will serve as the foundation for Japan’s Ministry of Defence UH-Xdevelopment programme. UH-X is a co-develop-ment programme between Bell Helicopter andFuji Heavy Industries for approximately 150 helicopters, to be delivered over the next twodecades.

Bell Helicopter’s development programmesmade significant progress and received impres-sive customer response. The Bell 525 achievedfirst flight in July 2015 and has accumulatednearly 80 letters of intent. The Bell 505 continuedits flight test program and now has letters ofintent for more than 350 aircraft. The Bell V-280Valor program hit a major milestone last yearwith the delivery of the first fuselage to the BellHelicopter facility in Amarillo, Texas. The V-280 is currently undergoing systems integration andmajor assemblies. First flight of the V-280 isanticipated in the second half of 2017.

Bell Helicopter also added support, service andtraining capabilities at its Prague and Singaporelocations as well as opening regional offices inJapan and Mexico, the new Bell HelicopterTraining Academy in Fort Worth, Texas, and theLafayette Assembly Centre in Louisiana.

Convention and Exhibition in Nevada, Bell announced the sale of the first Bell

407GXP to Germany. The aircraft will be outfitted for Corporate and VIP transport

and it will be the first of its kind of operate throughout Germany.

December 16th, 2015 In Bordes, France, Bell and Turbomeca were pleased to

announce that Turbomeca has received EASA engine type certification for its

Arrius 2R engine that powers the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X. With seven million flight

hours already logged by Arrius variants, the 2R is expected to offer unmatched

high level of maturity at entry-into-service. December 17th, 2015 Bell announced Chongqing General Aviation (CQGA),

located in China’s Chongqing Provence, as Bell’s newest authorized Customer

Service Facility. CQGA has a Civil Aviation Administration of China Part 145

certified maintenance facility and offers non-specialized main tenance capabilities

for Bell 407 aircraft. CQGA is an established operator and recently received the

first certified Bell 412 aircraft to be operated in China and used for fire-fighting

missions.

SIKORSKY COMPLETES VH-92A PRESIDENTIAL HELICOPTER REPLACEMENT PROGRAM MILESTONES

On May 7, 2014, the Navy awarded a $1,244,677,064 fixed-price incentive Engineering and Manufacturing Development

contract with production options to Sikorsky for 21 operational and two test aircraft. Initial fielding is planned for 2020, with

production concluding in 2023. Under the contract, Sikorsky will use its in-production S-92 aircraft and integrate government-

defined mission systems and install an executive interior. (source: Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation)

In July 2015, Lockheed Martin completed its $9B acquisition of Sikorsky Aircraft, a purchase the U.S. defense contractor

announced in July. Lockheed Martin will maintain the Sikorsky brand, as well as the military and civil product lines, the latter

including the S-76D medium and S-92A heavy twins. United Technology Corporation disposed of its helicopter business

because it saw a lagging profit margin and lackluster growth projections, which some industry observers (Lockheed Martin

among them, apparently) deemed short-sighted.

Sikorsky logged a major technology advancement in May when the S-97 Raider semi-compound helicopter made its first flight.

A follow-on to the X2 demonstrator, the S-97 combines two rigid coaxial, contra-rotating rotors and a pusher propeller to

achieve speeds unattainable with a conventional rotorcraft. Sikorsky is looking mainly at military applications but civil use is in

the cards. Sikorsky intends to dispatch the Raider on a demonstration tour this year. (source AIN Online)

AGUSTAWESTLAND SIGNED CONTRACTS NJ POLICECurrently, there are 5 and 3 year training contracts for EMS operator STARS of Canada and New Jersey State Police Department in the U.S., respectively and both customers operate AW139 helicopters. Airbus Helicopters has designated CAE’s Olsohelicopter training centre an Airbus HelicoptersApproved Simulation Centre for H225 recurrenttraining. This is the culmination of a process thatincluded a rigorous evaluation of the centre’sH225 simulator verifying its fidelity based onAirbus Helicopter’s simulation package, andcompletion of an Airbus-led training program forCAE instructors.

To maintain the Airbus Helicopters SimulationCentre Approval, CAE must adhere to a schedule of audits and regular monitoring.

Finmeccanica Helicopter Division has announced that it has signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding with Era Group Inc, for the devel-opment of the Emergency Medical Service vari-ant of the AgustaWestland AW609 TiltRotor. Erais a major customer of AgustaWestland helicop-ters, both as an operator and a lessor – recentlyincluding two AW189s.

The signing of the agreement is strong confirma-tion of the future plans for the world’s first com-mercial tiltrotor, after the fatal accident of a prototype in October 2015. One prototype is currently available, and two more are in variousstages of construction – one in Italy and one atthe company plant in Philadelphia.

A year ago, Bristow Helicopters was announcedas fulfilling a similar role in the offshore supportand SAR operational roles. Bristow reported atthe time that their role incuded addressing concepts around operations, regulations, maintenance, configuration optimization, as wellas identifying possible areas of enhancement ormodifications.

Aurora Flight Sciences announced today that theDefense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) has awarded the company the primecontract for Phase 2 of the Agency’s VerticalTakeoff and Landing Experimental Plane (VTOL X-Plane) programme.

VTOL X-Plane seeks to develop a technologydemonstrator that could: - Achieve a top sustained flight speed of 300 kt-400 kt- Raise aircraft hover efficiency from 60 percent to at least 75 percent- Present a more favourable cruise lift-to-drag ratio of at least 10, up from 5-6- Carry a useful load of at least 40 percent of the vehicle’s projected gross weight of 10,000-12,000 pounds

The Aurora team’s design for its unmanned aircraft,named LightningStrike, seeks to provide an approximately 50-percent increase in speed overexisting VTOL aircraft designed for comparable mission applications.

The technology demonstrator was designed in closecollaboration with Aurora’s team members, Rolls-Royce PLC and Honeywell International Inc.The Aurora-led team intends to deliver a number ofaviation milestones with the demonstration aircraft,including being the first aircraft designed to demonstrate:

- Distributed hybrid-electric propulsion ducted fans- An innovative synchronous electric-drive system- Both tilt-wing- and tilt-canard-based propulsion for vertical takeoff and landing- High efficiency in both hover and high-speed forward flight

The aircraft design features a Rolls-Royce AE 1107Cturboshaft engine that would power three Honeywellgenerators, and 24 ducted fans distributed on boththe wings and canards. The aircraft’s electric distrib-uted propulsion (EDP) system would consist of high-ly integrated, distributed ducted fans that, combinedwith the synchronous electric drive system, wouldenable the design’s potentially revolutionary hoverefficiency and high-speed forward flight.

“The Aurora team’s goal is to help redefine the futureof vertical flight,” said Mark Wilson, chief operatingofficer of Rolls-Royce LibertyWorks, an advancedaerospace technology research and design unit.“Rolls-Royce LibertyWorks is proud to contributeboth proven components and innovative new technologies in turbo-electric distributed propulsionto this exciting programme.”

The DARPA technology demonstrator’s flight controlsystem (FCS) builds on the heritage of Aurora’sCentaur and Orion optionally manned andunmanned aircraft platforms. The FCS system runson a triplex-redundant design to ensure detectionand correction of flight anomalies in both vertical andforward flight.

The newest FCOM, designed specifically for thesuper-medium H175 in offshore configuration, wasdeveloped using the same methodology and objectives as for the H225.

“The FCOM is an important source document providing best practices and recommendationsdirectly from the manufacturer,” explained GillesBruniaux, Airbus Helicopters Vice President ofAviation Safety. “When we began working on thevery first FCOM, it was already part of a larger strategy to expand to other aircraft in the AirbusHelicopters fleet. The H175 FCOM is the latest stepin this roadmap, and we are proud to be able tooffer this second information source that contributesto standardized operations throughout the industry.”

Following the model applied for the H225, topicscovered by the H175 FCOM include aircraft manufacturer guidance for enhanced operationalsafety during both routine and abnormal situations,with work-share management among pilots, focus-ing on procedures for operating state of the artglass cockpits and automated systems. Under his stewardship, the air ambulance’s servicesextended across Wales with the introduction of mid-Wales and North Wales helicopters. The charity wasnamed Britain’s Air Ambulance of the Year at the2009 Health Business Awards, and has carried outmore than 23,000 missions to date. The new airbasedevelopment, which will be next to the headquarters,is being funded through a £500,000 appeal run bythe air ambulance. Hacer Developments, which isdelivering the project for Wales Air AmbulanceCharity, has also accessed a property developmentgrant for the construction of the office buildingthrough Carmarthenshire County Council. Oncecompleted, the new base will feature the latest tech-nology and facilities for the charity’s aircrew. It willalso be the first time that Wales Air Ambulance hasowned its own premises, saving tens of thousands ofpounds a year in rent and fuel supply costs.
