WARNINGSome dust created by power sanding, sawing, grind-ing, drilling, and other construction activities containschemicals known to the State of California to causecancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

• Lead from lead-based paints.• Crystalline silica from bricks, cement, and

other masonry products.• Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated

lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending onhow often you do this type of work. To reduce yourexposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilatedarea, and work with approved safety equipment, suchas those dust masks that are specially designed to fil-ter out microscopic particles.

Section 3:Controls AndAdjustments

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENTTable height adjustment on the ModelG1131 Radial Drill Press is controlled by arack-and-pinion gearing system. To controlthe height of the table:

1. Release the locking lever on the rear ofthe table’s gear housing, mounted onthe vertical column.

2. Turn the adjustment crank clockwise orcounterclockwise to achieve a desiredtable height.

3. Re-tighten the locking lever to keep thetable from moving out of its desiredposition.

SIDE-TO-SIDE ADJUSTMENTThe table can be rotated from side-to-side,or completely 180° out of the way of spindletravel, so larger objects can be placed onthe work surface built into the base of thedrill press. To rotate the table:

1. Loosen the locking lever at the back ofthe table’s gear housing.

2. Move the table to its desired position.

3. Re-tighten the locking lever.

ANGLE ADJUSTMENTThe table’s angle relative to spindle travelcan be adjusted to 45° left or right. To adjustthe table tilt:

1. Loosen the hex bolt below the tablesupport.

2. Tilt the table to the desired angle, usingthe gauge built into the table support.

3. Once the table is adjusted to thedesired angle, re-tighten the bolt.

ON/OFF SWITCHThe Model G1131 Radial Drill Press isequipped with a key-activated ON/OFFswitch for added safety. To switch on thedrill press:

1. Insert the safety key into the switchmechanism located at the front of thespindle assembly.

2. Flip the key to the ON position.

3. When drilling is complete, switch thekey to the OFF position. When the drillpress is not in use, remove the key fromthe switch and store it in a safe place.

DEPTH STOP ADJUSTMENTThe Model G1131 Radial Drill Press offersan adjustable depth stop for precision con-trol when making repetitive cuts to an exactdepth. To set the depth stop:

1. Adjust your table so your workpiece isclose enough to your drill bit to allowtravel to the full depth of cut you desire.

2. Drill your first hole to the depth youseek.

3. Turn off the drill press and lower thespindle until the bit reaches the base ofyour cut. With one hand, maintain thatdepth.

4. Loosen the depth stop knob located atthe hub of the spindle height wheel androtate the depth scale counterclockwiseuntil the pointer reaches zero.

5. Tighten the depth stop knob andrelease the height wheel.

Once the procedure is complete, your drillpress will deliver uniformly deep holes untilyou choose to change your settings.

SPINDLE RETURN SPRINGAlthough the spring-operated spindle returnis set at the factory, there may come a timewhen it’s necessary to adjust its level oftightness.

Should adjustment be required, carefullyloosen the two locknuts on the outside of thespring assembly (located on the spindlehousing)

Firmly grasp the spring housing as youloosen the locknuts and gently pull the hous-ing away from the spindle until the notchesclear the retainer tab. Turn the housingclockwise – one notch at a time – until theproper tension is attained. Tighten the lock-nuts. Tighten the two nuts together usingtwo wrenches.

Page 8: G1131 Radial Drill Press

SPINDLE SPEEDSThe Model G1131 features a five-speed beltdrive system – so you can adjust drillspeeds to match your project. To changespindle speeds:

1. Turn off and unplug the drill press andallow all moving parts to stop.

2. Loosen the tensioning knob located justforward of the motor mount.

3. Open the top of the belt housing andreduce tension on the belts by pushingthe motor toward the front of the drillpress.

4. Move the V-belt to a position thatreflects the spindle speed you desire.See the illustration below for beltspeeds. Always move the end of thebelt that will move toward a smaller pul-ley first.

5. When you have relocated the belt, re-tension the motor mount. A properlytensioned belt will have about 1/2" ofdeflection mid-way between pulleys.

6. Tighten the tensioning knob and closethe belt housing cover.

Never attempt to alter speeds by angling thebelt between un-matched pulleys. Doing socould damage the belt and burn out bear-ings in the spindle assembly.

TILTING DRILL HEADAdjust the drill head up to 45° clockwise orcounterclockwise by loosening the tilt lockknob on the right side of the horizontal col-umn support. An angle guide at the front ofthe column support allows you to determinethe angle of spindle travel.

Remember to square your spindle assemblyto the table with a machinists or combinationsquare when returning to the zero position.

ROTATING DRILL HEADThe drill head on the Model G1131 RadialDrill Press can be rotated a full 360° to han-dle projects too large to fit on the table orbase support. To rotate the head, loosen the4mm setscrews on the left side of the hori-zontal column support. Once loosened, thedrill head can be rotated to fit your project.Keep in mind, while rotating the head, thatthe electrical cord must turn along with themachine. Pay attention that the cord isn’tpinched or snagged as a result of the rota-tion.

FORE/AFT MOVEMENTThe drill head on the Model G1131 RadialDrill Press can be moved to front and backto accommodate smaller or larger projects. To adjust, loosen the tilt lock knob and slidethe horizontal column forward or backwardto suit your needs. Remember to ensurethat the spindle assembly is square to thetable before operating the machine.
