Evening of Whisky Fundraiser Thursday 24 August, 6pm

Bayleys Real Estate, 14 Florence Ave, Orewa. $50 pp

News from the ChairSo I thought it would be a good idea to bring some money in to the Arts Centre, a fundraiser so to speak. Never hurts to raise money for the arts! The nice thing about my idea was that it involved our past Chair, Roy Burgoyne, and it involves you. Roy is a whisky aficionado. He delights in a good dram. I’m in the wine business and frequently conduct tastings. I’ve been at very enjoyable whisky tastings in the past and I thought, let’s put one on with Roy as our host and expert commentator. So with Roy’s input and help we’ve put together a plan for a great evening of whisky. We’re delighted also that we’re partnering with Bayleys Real Estate on the night. They’ll host the evening in their big auction room right in the heart of Orewa at 14 Florence Ave, they’ll cater the event and a couple of great whisky suppliers will come on board to supply us with a sample of each of the five Scottish regions of whisky - the Lowlands, the Highlands, Islay, Speyside and the Islands.

It will be a night of high tales and fun. Roy will share insights and if you have a tale or two related to the Scotch, he’ll no doubt get you involved as well.

So it’s Thursday August 24, 6pm for a 6.30pm start. We’ll have a cash bar available to supplement the tastings and we’ll provide platters of suitable foods for a night on the Malts. It’s $50 a head with all proceeds heading straight to the Arts Centre so a great cause is funded with your fun and laughter and pleased taste buds. Mark the date in your diaries; we’ll publish the way to register very soon. See you there. CheersJohn Davies

MOVING WITH THE TIMES - our place online with Kim Boyd

Everyone’s business in online these days, you search online, pay online, talk online, diarise online. We make dates on social media and record every waking hoursomewhere online. The Estuary Facebook presence grows daily and we now have an Instagram and Twitter account, we are on Neighbourly too. All of these platforms are a great way to share content, tell stories and connect.

Very soon Estuary Arts will be launching its brand new e-commerce website. We have spent the greater part of the year developing this new piece of technology with the guidance of the patient team at Unleashing Potential in Albany. The purpose of our new website is to showcase the array of creative pursuits and opportunities now on offer at the Centre and to share both visually and verbally the stories of our collective creative journeys.

It is also our aim to make booking a class or renewing your membership that much simpler. Students can now enrol online at any time of the day, so if you area night owl, like myself, I am often planning extra-curricular classes for my daughter or a desparate weekend getaway at the midnight hour. It seems the only quiet time when us busy parents can plan without noise and interruption. Each member or student will have theability to keep track of their own membership, class history and update personal information. Safety and security not only of your personal information butyour online payment is of the highest importance to us. From Term 3 you will be able to go onto our new websitewww.estuaryarts.org. sign in or just browse. Please note that membership cards won’t be processesd until the website is live. See you all in the gallery.

DementiaDo I know you

People tell me I shouldSomething familiar about the eyes

…nah, it’s goneJust another nameless face

Who are youI tell you, I don’t know

A cog turns in my mind…nah, it’s gone

Just another empty spaceHave I been there

A lifetime ago perhapsFleeting memory flickers

…nah, it’s goneJust another lifeless place

Do I know youPeople tell me I should

Someone familiar in the mirror…nah, not at all

Just another wretched confused face© Rose Hala

Brushed Words People’s Choice winnersOur members have voted and this combination of poetry and artwork “Dementia” by Rose Hala and mosaic artist Jacquie Strickland resonated strongly. The theme was not just thought provoking but beautifully articulated by Rose and the broken up fragments of glass representing transient memories was a strong visual display of fracture. Well done to everyone who took part in this challenge, it was a powerful collaboration.
