Club Sponsors Over the last few years weve seen one of the weak points of the H2s IFS front end happen many times on the trail broken tie rods. While this can be minimized by reducing wheel spin and careful driving, it cant be totally eliminated. Leading suspension manufacturer, Fabtech, offer a simple solution, Heavy Duty Tie Rods. The Fabtech Heavy Duty Tie Rod kit simply replaces the factory tie rods with both inner and outer heavy duty units. The kit is simple to install and will work on both lifted and stock H2s. An alignment is required after installation. Will it just mean I break something else? A good question and after hundreds of H2s have ran these for some time on the toughest trails, the answer is a definite No. They simply reduce the chances of breaking of the stock tie rods. There are also many other products available to strengthen the stock H2 IFS steering system, including Pitman and idler arm support kits, heavy duty center links, and idler arm pivot bracket reinforcement kits. Whenever you are on the trail there is always the possibility of getting stuck. Knowing how to quickly and safely recover the vehicle will make sure it doesnt ruin the day. On rocks and when at steep angles, a winch is the preferred method of recovery and certainly the safest. Whenever using a winch, safety is always of paramount importance. Think through what you are about to do, only use good quality equipment in good condition, always use a tree strap to protect trees, and never exceed the working load limits of your equipment. Never connect a winch line back onto itself, and never allow anyone to stand near a tensioned winch line. Synthetic winch lines are preferred, but if using a steel winch line, place something over it, such as a blanket, jacket, etc. This will reduce any whip effect should the cable break. If working the winch hard, give it a break every few minutes to allow it to cool down. Never have the winching vehicle in Park, it should be in Neutral with the emergency brake on and the driver should be applying the brakes. Winching operations can draw a lot of current from the battery, sometimes better results will be achieved by holding the engine RPMs around 1500. In many instances, especially when stuck in mud, a snatch or Kinetic Energy Recovery is the quickest and safest method of recovering a vehicle. Again, only use equipment in good condition, which should consist of a good quality two strap with eyes, not built in hooks, and some recovery shackles, and keep everyone away from the area. Never exceed the safe working load limits of your equipment. A snatch recovery is very simple and uses the principles of energy transfer to recover the stuck vehicle. Using a suitable recovery strap or recovery rope, and two shackles, connect the stuck vehicle and vehicle doing the recovery together. Only connect to suitable anchor points connected to the vehicles frame. The recovering vehicle should back up about 15 feet or so towards the stuck vehicle, obviously avoiding running over the strap. Once everyone is clear, the recovering vehicle will pull forward at a moderate pace. When the strap becomes taught, the energy used in moving forward will be transferred to the stuck vehicle and snatch it forward. Several attempts may be needed depending upon how stuck the vehicle is. However you recover your vehicle, always think through what you are doing, plan ahead, and most importantly put safety first. Steering Issues? Trail Tips Hummer X Club can be found on the web: www.HummerXClub.com Club Officers Phil Day - President Seth Fox - Vice President James Thomas Director Richard Gonzalez Director Rod Helm - Director Joyce Fox - Secretary Laura Day Treasurer Hummer X Club is a registered not for profit organization. Newsletter Volume 1, Issue 3 Fall 2006 HummerXClub.com Hummer X Club President Phil Day makes light work of The Escalator in Moab, Utah. The Hummer X Club forums are a great place to learn about Hummers, read and share technical advice, and generally discuss Hummer and off- road related issues. A big topic of discussion is always Member Events. Check out the Event Planning section to see what events are going on near you. Drop by and visit the Hummer X Club forums and see what is happening in the Hummer community: www.HummerXClub.com/forum New Growth, New Members, New Chapters Hummer X Club has seen tremendous growth during 2006, with many new members, new chapters and more events than ever! Membership and interest in the Club has grown by leaps and bounds. Members drive all types of vehicles, H1s, H2s, H3s, as well as Jeeps and other off-road vehicles. The Nevada Chapter, headed by Rod Helm in Nevada, has put on many events during the year and continues to be the most active Hummer X Club Chapter. Hummer X Club is now represented by Club Chapters in the following areas; California Carolinas Colorado Florida Nevada North East Oklahoma Texas. Visit the HummerXClub.com web site for the latest information on Club Chapters. Hummer X Club held a major event at Katemcy Rocks in Texas in June. Not only did people attend from all over Texas, but we had people come in from as far away as Mississippi and Nevada. None of this growth would have been possible without the support of our Club members and the hard work of Chapter Presidents. So, thank you all for your support! The Hummer X Club is a national organization dedicated to promoting the Hummer TM spirit, responsible off roading, discovery, and family friendly events. Club News Sadly, AM General will no longer be making the H1 Alpha. After been the undisputed King of Off-road for so many years, it is with some sadness that we say goodbye to the original Hummer. However, there is much talk of new and future Hummer models. Rumors of a H2 pickup wont go away, and we may see one in the near future, possibly in both 2 and 4 door variants. The H3 may see a diesel engine at some point, although an export model diesel is likely to be released first. But with concerns of rising gas prices, a domestic diesel H3 may not be very far behind. An H3 soft top may also be on the drawing board, or we may just have to wait for the H4 to enjoy some open top motoring. The H4 seems to be back on track, at least for the moment, so we may yet see a Hummer directly compete with the venerable Jeep Wrangler. It is also rumored that Hummer may become GMs diesel division. Whatever new models are set to join the Hummer line up, the future looks great for fans of the greatest off-road brand in the World.
