    Editors note,

Kudos to Ajay Devgn and his performance in Once Upon a Time In Mumbai.

In comparison to some of our other loud actors, who go overboard with their

performances, Ajay has this fine art of giving a subtle performance in whatever

role he attempts. It also reminds me that actors like Ajay are far better in comedythan Akshay Kumar and his types, who make a mockery of comedy, with their

    performances.

Lets hope the audiences hail more such actors at the box-office.

to enter into an understanding. The film will see

the coming together of two of Bollywoods most-

talked actresses, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor. The

last time they were seen together was in Kabhi

Khushi Kabhi Gham, which was also a Dharma

Productions movie. The music of the film has

been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The film

is scheduled to release on September 10,

from her husband, Aman (Arjun Rampal) Maya

has ensured that everything runs smoothly in her

to remain a happy family unit. However, when

to learn about children, to the family, the situation

immediately takes an unexpected turn. When an

incident changes their lives drastically, bringing

the two women under the same roof, they find

themselves putting to test an unusual situation.

Can two mothers make a home?

Forced to make some unorthodox choices for her

family, Maya must confront her uneasy equation

And I dream of the days when work was scrappy,

And rare in our pockets the mark of the mint,

And we were angry and poor and happy,

And proud of seeing our names in print

I just chanced upon this little verse and felt it so apt in most of our lives, lives that

all of us have led and experienced and enjoyed, irrespective of what circumstances the

    words may express.

Yes, we have all been through those days when we knew and felt

that the work that we were doing was not what we wanted to be doing

for the rest of our lives. We wanted work, we wanted to stand on our

own feet, we needed that independence, we needed to walk away from

being dependent on others, particularly family and parents. We took on

whatever came our way. It was a start. A beginning. If we saw a future a

continuity in it, we remained, if not, we quietly and most politely declined

it and went our way.But those times were rare. The mark in our pockets of that mint

lasted but for the shortest period of time. There was the regular upkeep

and existence that challenged our earnings each month. There was the

paucity for the luxury and the fun that we could buy. It made us angry.

Angry because we had the desire, but not the pocket to afford it. Angry

because we saw others in more affluent situations and lamented the fact

of not being in their shoes.

But we were happy. Happy to be where we were, in whatever we were and whatever

we had. The discomfort of not being in the other league was diminished in the company

of compatriots who were also in similar conditions. Somehow there was a brotherhood

of those in the same boat and suddenly it all did not look so bad after all. It became

fashionable to say we cannot afford it. We said it without any remorse, but with a

strange sense of pride. It was acceptable that we did not have everything.

In a sense it egged us on to struggle harder, to work towards a goal that would

provide us, or put us in that elusive basket where all was not ready made for us.

And then the print ! The first print mention in a sporting achievement or small

mention of that theatre experience. An assessment a presence, a few kind words of

description ; the very first time to confront what others thought of you, not in private,

but in the realm of a medium that would be public ! Such a joy and feel of

importance. The exuberance of sharing it with colleagues, friends, family

and in private repeatedly. Its safe custody in that little drawer where

all the personal letters were neatly kept. Its presence under the pillow

for several nights and then finally to store it away reluctantly, to glance

perchance within a time span !

The quote is from C.sK. Chesterton ( 1874 - 1936 ) and it is titled the

Song of Defeat. Six years before I was born he perished, but his thoughts

relevant today in 2010 in a manner which he may never have everenvisaged. He calls it a Song of Defeat. To me it is a song of victory, as I

am certain it would be for many others who found themselves perched

on the fence, about to slide across to the other side where the grass was

    greener.

It has allowed me to look back. To reminisce, to wonder. It may seem

that I would have been through with it. It may still return, who knows.

But it still remains as a symbol to me of all that has an eternal value. One that needs to

    be cherished, embellished and stored.

Thank you Lord for giving me the opportunity to look upon it in hindsight ..

You may very well have not !

Love and affection in more ways than one -

His success story, star charisma and immense talent remain unparalleled but there is yet an-other quality to Big B that makes him a cut above the rest-the fact that he values every mo-ment of his success. In this piece, he introspects about the little joys of success and how they

    are cherished forever.

    Your performancein Once Upon

    A Time... has

    come for both

    commercial and critical

    acclaim. How does it feel?

    I am delighted with the

    audience response for the film.

I always look forward to the

feedback I get from my fans

    and audiences. Their response

is an indicator that my hard

    work has paid off.

    Your characterization and

look in the film has also

    come for appreciation.

    As for the characterization,

    it was entirely director Milan

Luthrias vision. I did work on

my look for the film, the long

hair, the style of dressing. The

film is based on the 70s so we

    decided that bell bottom pants

    and high heeled shoes, would

be apt in keeping with the

    period. Also, we all researched

on the look. Alim Hakim who

    styled my hair remembered

what the look was in the 70s,

when he would accompany hisfather on the sets. Designers

    Rishi and Manushi worked

on the costumes, so it was a

    combined effort.

    How much did you know

    about Haji Mastan as a

    man before you attempted

    the role?

I knew that he was a

    smuggler but one who was

very good at heart. Besides, he

    only indulged in the smuggling

of banned goods. In terms of

the character, I felt that he

had a very different persona in

    comparison the other dons, one

who was mean and at the same

time romantic. On one side he

had a wry sense of humour,

on the other he was very soft-

    hearted, which is why people

took advantage of him. He has

a wry sense of humour and at

the same time he is a softie at

    heart and thats why people

    take advantage of him.

    How was it working with

Milan Luthria? We are old friends. We have

    grown together over the films

we have done over the years.

    We did Kachche Dhaage and

    Deewar together we have

been friends since then, so the

    comfort level is much more

    now.

    You seem to be consciously

    attempting roles in various

    genres, be it drama,

    comedy or action. Are

    you happy with the

    kind of work you are

    doing?

I do want to get into

    different genres and I

    am making efforts in that

direction. I am the kind of

actor who would like to go

    one step further beyond my

    limitations. For me acting is

    a process of eternal learning.

    Also, I believe that every

    person learns from his

    own mistakes.

    You are reportedly

    playing the role of

    a terrorist in your

    next film, Bullet

    Train?

    I would

    not like toc o m m e n t

    on the

    film at this

    stage since

    we have not yet

    started shooting for it.

    However, I will definitely

    be able to talk about

    Priyadarshans Aakrosh. It

is a complete action film and

we have just wrapped up the

    shooting for the film. .

    The news goes that

    Aakroshwill have

    you performing

    some dare-devil

    stunts on par with what

    you had done in Patthar

    Ke Phool

    Thats not entirely true. I

dont think it will be able to

do the kind of stunts I did in

    Patthar Ke Phoolat this stage.

When I did the film, I was young,

fearless and ready to take risks.

It meant conditioning my bodyand putting in a good deal of

    hard work. Today my body

may not be able to take that

    kind of pressure. Also my

    responsibilities in life have

doubled up. I will think twice

    before taking such a step.

    How has Golmaal-3

    shaped up? Are you

    planning to go ahead

    with another

    sequel?

    Its been great

    doing all the

    Golmaalseries. In

    fact, the laugh

    riot seems to

    be getting

    m o r e

    h i l a r i o u s

    with every

    s e q u e l .

    We have

    not yet

    d e c i d e d

    a b o u t

    a n o t h e r

    sequel but

    we may just

    go ahead

    with one. We

    are enjoying iti m m e n s e l y

    and so are the

    audiences.

    What is

    it about

    f i l m m a k e r

    Rohit Shetty,

    that keeps you

    inspired to work

    with him again

    and again?

    I and Rohit have

    been together for the

    last 19 years. We met

    during the making of

    Phool Aur Kaante

in 1991, my debut venture, in

which he was working as an

    assistant director. In 2003 he

    turned a full-fledged director

    with Zameen and decided

to cast me in the lead. Our

    friendship has grown over the

years and we are more like

    family now. When you are

friends you share everything.Yes, we do have our share of

    fights and arguments but then

we dont let it come in the way

of our friendship. We are no

    longer in the actor-director

    kind of relationship now.

    What according to you is

    the formula for success?

I dont believe in a success

formula, nor do I go by the

numbers game. For me a high

in my career is the appreciation

I get from the audiences. On

my part, I try and choose the

right films. Like I said earlier,

success for me is more about

trying to please my fans and

    fulfilling their expectations.

    Have you ever been

    through a low phase in

    life?

    I have fortunately been lucky

in my career and have never

quite seen low phases. I have

    been working continuously for

the last 20 years. I didnt have

a hit for one or two years but

    that didnt dampen my spirits.

    Do you ever carry your

stress back home?I never do that. For me the

moment I pack up, I switch off.

If you take your work home,

    your life gets disturbed. It

can get dangerous to a point

    where people end up becoming

    a wreck. I can remember

only one occasion when I got

    seriously intimidated by the

    character I was playing. That

was the role of Bhagat Singh

for which I had done immense

    research. We didnt want to

make mistakes so I had to be

careful but I ended up thinking

    about him day and night.

How beneficial is it when an

    actress is your wife?

    Its much easier. She understands

    my pressures. She understands when

I cant give her time. I can discuss

my work with her and take her

    suggestions.

    You are heading for fatherhood

once again. How does it feel?

I am excited and am looking forward

to becoming a father for a second time.

I am keeping my fingers crossed. I

am not gender biased. I want to have

a healthy child. In fact my daughter,

forward to have a sibling. I am thinking

Zoya Akhtars cast zooms off on long drives every dayNEWS

Film-maker Zoya Akhtar has devised new ways to ensure

that the actors starring in her film, Zindagi Mile Na Dobara,

share a great comfort level and are in tune with each other.

Since her movie is about a road trip of three best friends played

by Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol, besides the

lead girls Katrina Kaif and Kalki, Zoya has asked them to hang out

    together everywhere

    they go.

    She even asked

    the five actors to

    take long drives

    together so that they

    could get friendly

    with each other and

    the chemistry would

    eventually reflect onscreen. Besides, Zoya

has set up the sets at

    a 40 to 45 minute

    drive from the hotel.

    This way the actors

    leave together for

    the shoot and return

together. The entourage follows them later. This gives them more

    time with each other.

Unit sources inform that the actors are having a blast on the

sets with each other ever since. In fact, they have all become so

comfortable that they dont go out without each other so much

so that they even cycle and gym together these days. That sure is

a novel way of making work an enjoyable experience. The other

directors need to take a cue from Zoya.

    Anil Kapoors new Papa!

Anil Kapoor has found himself a

new Papa and before you start

    getting ideas...its none other

    than Siddhartha Kannan. Recently

Anil went for a studio interview

    for Sids show...When Sid

asked him the secret behindhow he was looking younger

by the day, Anil told him

    about his five plastic

    surgeries and his nose

    rectification job.

    However, knowing

    his penchant for

    humour, Anil

    suddenly stood

    up and called

    him Papa Sid to

    which Sid promptly

replied, I always wanted a son like you-

    Beta Anil.

    Anils daughter Rhea and music

    composer Amit Trivedi went berserk

laughing at the Father -Son duo

having a blast with each other.

The icing on the cake was Anilasking Sid for his aashirwad

which Sid was more than happy

    to oblige!

    When asked about his

    experience with Anil

    Kapoor, Sid says, His

    humility touches your

    heart and his sense of

    humour can teach a

thing or two to the best

    of comedians.

    Actress Mugdha Godse is merely

two films old and is eagerly looking

forward to her first horror movie

but the actress already has enough horror

tales to narrate. I knew it was too early in

my career to do such a film but then when

I heard the script, I simply couldnt say no,

    she says.

In the film, Mughda plays the role of

Pia, the wife of a horror film-maker. We

have marital problems and in the midst of

the troubled marriage we have to rush to

Mauritius to visit my ailing father. Thats

where we find unusual things happening

    around us.

The last time Mughda had a tryst with

ghosts was during her modeling days.

We were put up at a hotel and I was with

another model. I thought she was talking to

her boyfriend on the phone and asked her

about it. However, I later learnt that she

believed the same and we both continued to

hear the same voice through the night. We

changed our rooms the very next morning,

she recalls. After all the experiences, the

actress has now overcome her fear about

ghosts. She even makes it a point to watch

horror films now. I can afford to watch one

horror film every week now. And I enjoy

watching it in the dark, she smiles.

    After Raavan, Aishwarya is looking

    forward to working with hubby

    Abhishek Bachchan once again.

We hear that the actress has agreed to

do a cameo in Rohan Sippys Dum Maro

Dum. According to sources often visited

the sets to meet her hubby. So when

Rohan Sippy wanted an actress for a

cameo, hers was the first name that came

to his mind. Ofcourse, Ash was more than

delighted to accept the offer considering

that she and Abhishek hardly ever got

time together with the many solo films

they had signed earlier. In fact, the two

have now decided that working together

is the best time spent with each other,

be it films or commercial. Coming back

to Dum Maro Dum, the action thriller

has Abhishek playing the role of an

undercover cop on the lines of his father

    Amitabh Bachcans role in Zanjeer

    during the 60s.

    Now that the Pataudi

    girl, Soha Ali Khan

    has openly admitted

    to being in relationship with

    actor Kunal Khemu, we hear

    more and more about this

    latest Bollywood couple.

    Sources reveal that when

Kunal celebrated his birthdayin May, Soha had also gifted

him a watch that cost her

Rs 4 lakhs. Kunal has been

    happily flaunting his gift to

his friends ever since. In fact,

word goes that Soha has also

    met Kunals parents and often

stays back at his home for

    dinner, whenever she visits

    them. However, though

    both Kunal and Soha have

    met each others parents,

marriage is not quite on the

cards for the couple yet, this

    source reveals.

    Qudos to Dev Anand

    Ever green actor Dev Anands

    energy is commendable. The 87-

year old actor, who refuses to get

bogged down by his age, is now set to

remake his memorable hit, Hare Rama

    Hare Krishna. He recently revealed

his plans and also admitted that hewas planning to shoot the entire film

    in Nepal like the

    earlier version.

    People often

    keep asking me

    about the remake

    of Hare Rama

    Hare Krishna

    and this has been

    going on in my

    mind for some

    time. I have

    many scripts.

    I am all alone

    but not lonely.

    If people can

    remake Hindi

    movies and southmovies here in

    Hindi, why cant

    I remake my own

    film? What fun

is it to wear anothers shirt? he asked

    enthusiastically

When asked if he would cast Zeenat

Aman in the lead again Dev Anand said,

Dont be surprised. I will cast anyone

who does justice to the role. India is a

beautiful country and there are many

young good-looking boys and girls on

the streets who dream of becoming

stars. They call me up saying that they

want to be film stars but are not getting

    breaks.

    Hare Rama Hare Krishna was

made keeping in mind the hippie culturethat was rampant in those times. There

    were hippies in the

    70s, now it is the

    drugs he added.

    Currently, Dev

    Anand is busy

    preparing for the

    release of his latest

    directorial venture

    Charge sheet, a

    suspense thriller

    in which he plays

    the pivotal role.

    The film also stars

    Samajwadi leader

    Amar Singh as a

    home Minister. I

met Amar Singhat a party and he

    hailed me. I hailed

    him back. He

    asked me when I

am going to cast him in my film. I told

him about this role in Charge sheet and

he agreed. We shot at his home in Delhi.

He is very ---happy with the outcome.

You can feel the dream in his eyes he

    concludes. Qudos to ever-green young

AUGUST 15, 2010, AUCKLANDWWW. LESS4U.CO.NZ16 IN THE NEWS

Mallika Sherawat now shifts her gaze to Bollywood

Manisha Koirala signs her first film post marriage

    Mallika Sherawat is certainly

    making hay in Hollywood

while the sun is still shining

there. But the actress is a bit anxious

that her Bollywood fans may soon

forget her and consider her a non-

entity here, which is why she has gone

ahead and signed a Hindi film with

    director Indra Kumar. Reportedly,

Mallika has replaced Vidya Balan in

the much awaited sequel of Dhamaal

titled Dhamaal-2 after the latter opted

    out of the film.

It may be recalled that Mallika has

not had a single Hindi release after

Dashavatar in April last year. Her

last two releases were both Hollywood

    ventures namely, Hisss and Love

Barrack. We will have to wait and watch

whether Dhamaal indeed proves to be

a fun-ride for her after her tryst with

    Hollywood.

    Actress Manisha Koirala, who

    quit the industry midway, is

    looking at a second innings

    in the industry post-marriage.

film Jai Bhim, in which she

will play the role of a hard-core

    politician- a Dalit leader.

    It may be recalled that

    Manishas last movie was Partho

    Ghoshs Ek Second Jo Zindagi

Badal De, after which she decided

to switch over to filmmaking. Later

    she even trained in filmmaking

at New York and announced her

decision to direct a film. However,

    the actress seems to have

    postponed the project for now.

I dont know when I will start

directing it. First, I have to get myacting career back on track. Thats

why I am giving a lot of thought

to the movies I sign, she revealed

    when asked about it.

Jai Bhim is being made under

    the banner of Yograj Cinevista,

    with the producer and director

    both hailing from Dehradun. So

    far only cinematographer Ashok

Mehta has been signed for the

    movie.

    The producers are now

    planning to promote local

talent through the film and will

be shooting the entire film in

    Dehradun to promote the place

    through their film.

Salman Khan is no doubt known

for his obstinate nature and his

    whimsical ways but the superstar

has always come for praise for his one

quality- his extensive charitable work.In fact, Salman does not spare a single

moment when it comes to espousing a

charitable cause. Recently, when he was

shooting for a film in Sri Lanka, Salman

chose the opportunity to continue with

his charitable work under the aegis of

    Being Human foundation. The actor

provided a bright future for the poor in

Jaffna and Vavuniya, by organizing 500

cataract operations in both the cities in

a span of 10 days. He also flew down

four doctors especially from Mumbai to

    perform the operations.

We are not surprised why Salman

Khans fan-following only seems to be on

the rise as the years pass by. Accordingto Deepak Anand, who worked on the

production team of Salmans last film

Veer and has just started an acting

    academy in Bengaluru, students who

have started enrolling are keen to

    know whether their favourite Salman

Khan will be part of the faculty. Anand

constantly jokes that he would need

military security if Salman Khan visits

the academy. The excitement and craze

for Salman is so huge he says.

    Theres bad news for

    those who were looking

    forward to play the

    role of Buddha in Ashutosh

    Gowarikers next magnum

    opus. Reports suggest that the

Rs 600 crores film which was

    announced with much fan fare

has been shelved as of now.

    Sources inform that

    the producers had initially

announced the film on a grand

    scale. However, as the days

passed by, they cut down their

    budget drastically from Rs 600

crores to Rs 60 crores, which

    Ashutosh did not accept kindly.

    The subsequent changes in the

script also put the director offand he decided to wash his

    hands off the project.

    According to a source

    associated with the movie, the

    producers have now shut down

    the pre-production unit of the

movie. They had started a unit

at J.W. Marriot which was going through the photographs and video of aspiring

actors for the role of Buddha. Bu the unit was shut down recently.

It may be recalled that Gowariker had even finalised an international crew

with big names like Karl Walter Lindenlaub (cinematography), Jarrod Linton

(pre-visualisation), David Ward (script-screenplay), David Russell (storyboard

artist), Glenn Boswell (action), April Ferry (costumes), Dileep Singh Rathore (co-

producer and line producer) and Nitin Desai (art) for Buddha. The movie, which

focuses on the life of Prince Siddhartha and his journey to enlightenment, was

scheduled to start by the year end.

You seem to be on a career

    high with four significant

    releases this year. Which

    one of them are you

    particularly looking forward to?

I would say that the year started on

a very promising note with the success

of Housefull. I now have Yash Raj

Films Lafangey Parindey up for release,

besides Break Ke Baad opposite Imran

Khan and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se

    opposite Abhishek Bachchan. The

interestingly feature of all these films are

that they all belong to different genres

and each of them has unique role for me.

I am glad that I am being offered different

roles and getting an opportunity to work

    with the best of directors.

Tell us about your role in Lafangey

Parindey.I play a blind girl by the name of

Pinky Palkar who is confident, ambitious

and a fighter to the core. She knows what

she wants and where she is heading for

despite her handicap. I could well relate

to the character because thats the way I

am made. Like Pinky, I dont give up on

things easily and pursue my goals to the

    very end.

Reportedly the role was a tough

    challenge and you had extensive

    workshops before you started

    shooting for the film.

It is true that the role of Pinky Palkar

was not particularly easy. I play a blind

girl and doing all the stunts being blind

was not easy. I would often close my eyes,

practice them and later try them once

again with my eyes open. Nevertheless,

the fact that I came from a sports

background made things fairly easier for

me. My demeanor can be lady-like but

the moment I put on my track pants and

T shirt, I can be as good as the boys

on the field with a ball. My knowledge

of skating and Bharat Natyam, came

in handy, in the way I could pick up

the nuances of the character. Also, the

entire group of five boys and girls had to

be alert about the fact that I was playing

a blind girl. One wrong move could mar

the movie. So we had intense work shops

with blind people before we took on the

    movie.

You have attempted stunts in your

last film too. How different was

    this experience?

Earlier in Chandni Chowk To China,

I trained in martial arts for the role. I

did enjoy the stunts at that time too. But

somewhere there is a child in everybody.

There are days when you want to go one

step beyond your perceive limit and take

up the challenge, which is what I did in

    Lafangey Parindey.

You have also been training inscuba diving and paragliding. Is it

    for the same movie?

No it was merely to get out of the

phobia of creepy crawly creatures that I

decided to train in scuba diving. Now that

I am a certified diver, I have overcome all

such fears. Likewise, I had fear of heights

so I decided to take up paragliding. It

    was a wonderful experience.

How was the bonding with co- star

    Neil Nitin Mukesh?

I think I have discovered a friend for

life in Neil. He is a wonderful human

being and the bonding we share has come

across wonderfully on screen. We got

along really well during the shoot. There

was an accident scene, where I neededa different kind of make-up and Neil

was trained in it so he told the director,

Pradeep Sarkar that he would do my

make-up, which he did. On another day

when I was doing an action sequence

which needed a lot of cable work, he

choreographed the entire act. So I think

he was there for me all the time.

Do you find it easier to bond with

co-stars with whom you share a

    certain relationship?

I dont know about that but I try and

concentrate on my work irrespective of

how far I am close to my co-star. At the

end of the day, we are professionals and

    have to do our work.

It is rumoured that Salman Khan

and John Abraham are keen on

    working with you.

I dont know why people assume

    things and draw conclusions prematurely.

At times we actors do listen to scripts

which dont necessarily work out all the

time. I am indeed doing a film with John

Abraham which will be directed by Rohit

Dhawan but yes, I am dying to work with

    Salman.

Do you go by your gut instinct when

    it comes to choosing roles?

Not really. I am an actor and I need

to be convinced about the character I am

playing. It is important for me that I enjoythe process and also be part of projects

with the best of directors. Tomorrow I

should not have doubts whether I have

chosen the right film. Fortunately, most

of my films except Chandni Chow To

China have done well. This is my eighth

film and I would not know whether it will

be a box-office success. But I do want

people to stand up and acknowledge my

talent. I think the process has already

started after Love Aaj Kal. That is what

Adi (Chopra) said when he offered me

this role. I feel that if I am indeed getting

great opportunities, it means that I am

    doing good work.

    By Sharmishta T

u seem to be on a career was not easy. I would often close my eyes, the nuances of the character. Also, the

Labour Associate Ethnic Affairs spokesperson, Dr Ashraf Choudhary says theGovernment must take into account the financial struggle migrant and refugeefamilies will face if it introduces changes in the interest-free student loan

scheme.Labour introduced interest-free loans in 2005 to give more Kiwis the opportunity

for higher learning. After promising to keep the scheme in place, Prime MinisterJohn Key is now hinting at a back-track, Ashraf Choudhary said.

Many skills and qualifications gained in migrant countries of origin are nottransferable in New Zealand, and therefore it is vital new migrants undertake studyhere to achieve qualifications that are recognized, he added.

Earlier this week John Key spoke to students at Victoria University aboutstudent loan debt, and suggested that the interest-free student loan scheme doesnteconomically stack up, Dr Choudhary said. If National is toying with the idea ofbringing back interest it must seriously look at the deterrent impact that will have onmigrant and refugees gaining an education which is beneficial to their family, futuresecurity and to New Zealand, he revealed..

According to Dr Choudhary, student loans already create long-term impacts onthe financial security of families, such as buying a home and saving for retirement.Women also take twice as long on average to repay their loans, particularly whenthey take time out of the paid workforce to have children, he said.
