Opening a new front door to metro Washington and the world.

GenerationGenerationto 2Information Guide

ADOORWAY OF PPORTUNITYOMost people envision progress as a steady process that happens “one step at a time.” But that is not really how a church grows. In reality, everyday faithfulness leads to opportunities for huge leaps forward, and churches grow in fits and starts. These doorways of opportunity cannot be missed, because they do not open often and they do not remain open forever. Churches that choose not to tra-verse these thresholds eventually decline and become irrelevant.

We find ourselves at just such a doorway now, a moment of time in which we will either embrace the future or be contented to live in the past. The stage has been set for tremendous growth, and the last re-maining obstacle is the inadequacy of our present facilities. If we can jump through this doorway together, we can take a tremendous leap forward and secure Columbia’s future for a generation or more. This moment is that critical!

A similar doorway opened for Columbia in the 1950’s, the last time Falls Church and North Arlington were changing as dramatically as they are now. With great effort and conviction, Columbia leapt through that doorway and established the church we know and love. As important as the intervening years have been, the doorway open to us now is the most significant opportunity in sixty years.

The area around Columbia is transforming rapidly once again, and Columbia will not be left behind. It is time for us to “open a new front door to Metro Washington.” It is time for us to jump through this door of opportunity and open a new door to those God is bringing our way.

BACKGROUNDColumbia has a long history of growth in the

City of Falls Church. Since our founding in 1856, every generation has helped shape and steward

Columbia for the next generation.

2012 – 2013: Initiated Generation to Generation (G2G) In 2012, we recognized that to stay at our current Falls Church location, we needed more space for worship and education.

After approving a plan to rebuild our site, hundreds of Columbia’s members and attendees pledged $5.5 million toward the $23.2 million costs, making it the most successful campaign in Columbia’s history. We are grateful to the leaders of this phase.

2015-2016: The Next Phase, Generation to Generation II (G2G2)

In 2015 the church voted to create the Futures Team, a group of Columbia members and leaders tasked with bridging the gap between the cost of the project and the funds raised. The team listened to the concerns of the congregation and developed the following:

• A final construction cost, which is 25% lower than the initial estimate

• An updated communications plan to provide the congregation with regular project updates

• Financial and construction benchmarks so you know what to expect

We’re ready to share what we’ve learned with you so you’re ready to help us make G2G2 even more successful than the first phase. Please review this guide for more information about why we must take action, our revised building proposal, how we’ll pay for it and what to expect next.

SECURING COLUMBIA’S FUTURE

3 • Generation to Generation II • G2G2

As stewards of Columbia, we must take action to secure Columbia’s future as a vibrant and growing church in an equally vibrant and growing community.

Our roots are here in the beautiful City of Falls Church. Before G2G, we considered liquidating our property and building a new church further out, but that’s not who we are. Our mission is to ignite passion for Jesus Christ from metro Washington to the world, and we intend to fulfill that mission right where we are.

Our mission field is growing. The City of Falls Church is growing rapidly – current construction will bring thousands of new residents – in addition to the growth around us in Merrifield, Fairfax, Annandale, Alexandria and DC.

We want to be welcoming inside and outside. Anyone who’s seen first-time visitors try to figure out which door to use knows we’re not putting our best face forward. Once people do make it in, navigating our building can feel like being in a maze. Completing this project will ensure our building reflects the joy with which we worship and invites others to join us.

30 years have passed since we added space. We haven’t expanded our facilities since 1985, and our current buildings can’t keep pace with our worship and education needs. As one of the few large, historic Baptist churches less than 10 miles from the White House, we must always be ready to serve a bigger community.

Our opportunity is now. Over 10,000 people walk through our building every week, and we want our facilities to reflect who we are and our passion for Jesus Christ. Churches in our area that do this well are prospering with flourishing membership, vibrant ministries and strong community ties. Others failed to keep up and paid the price.

We have an achievable plan. Let’s do it. It’s time to open a new front door to metro Washington and the world.

WHY WE MUST TAKE ACTION

Opening a NEW FRONT DOOR to METRO WASHINGTON and the WORLD • 4

Designed by David Lipp, a local architect at Helbing Lipp Recny Architects with long-term ties to Columbia, our new plan offers common sense refinements better aligned with how we want to use our space. The result is a 25% lower cost solution – approximately $17.8 million instead of the original $23.2 million – that resolves our space constraints.

Here are some of the key differences:• We’re adding the new worship space to our existing facilities,

rather than tearing down and replacing our current building - This increases our usable space with minimal change to our existing footprint

• We can continue to use our space while the new worship space is constructed

• We’re leaving some areas unfinished until we need them

ESTIMATED PROJECT COST $17,800,000

For the building project to be successful, we must embrace our roles as stewards of Columbia and invest in our future while taking on a minimal amount of debt.

Our initial building project totaled $23.2 million, and our revised building proposal is $17.8 million. We’ve already raised $5.5 million in pledges and have received $3.3 million, and we will raise the remainder through contributions from Columbia members and financing.

Break-ground funding goal (G2G and G2G2 Campaigns combined)Once we have $10.5 million pledged, with $4.4 million of that in the bank, we will obtain financing for the balance, break ground and begin construction.

Fundraising plan: $10.5 million • September 2016: Introduce and conduct G2G2 Campaign to

raise an additional $5 million in pledges - Targeted follow-ups with members who pledged during the initial G2G campaign

- Outreach to members who have yet to pledge - Outreach to members who joined Columbia after the initial G2G launch

Financing plan • Finance remaining amount needed to reach $17.8 million• Minimize the use of debt and plan to pay off the loan within 5 to 10 years

Please reflect on and talk with your family about the blessings God has given you and respond with love and generosity. You have the opportunity to express your love of God and return to Him a measure of the blessing He has bestowed.

Please consider your commitment to G2G2 as additional support for Columbia. Regular Sunday collections are still needed to help maintain day-to-day programs and services.

Suggestions for givingThese 3-year payment options encourage financial commitments over a 36-month period. When you make your pledge, you’ll be able to designate your total pledge, initial offering and the payment interval that works best for you.
