THE YEAR IN REVIEWDear Friends,In 1950, ten caring community members saw a need for foster homes for at-risk or “pre-delinquent” boys, and created Friends of Youth, a place where all youth have the opportunity to succeed. Since then, Friends of Youth has grown to become a leader in developing, providing and advocating for services that help children, youth and families in challenging circumstances to thrive. Today, Friends of Youth positively impacts more than 4500 youth and families each year, operating facilities at twenty five sites and providing services in eighteen cities in King and Snohomish Counties.

Friends of Youth has expanded impressively since our humble beginning, but our founding principles have endured: an unwavering dedication to providing quality services; the flexibility to meet new and emerging needs; and most importantly, a commitment to securing the futures of the most vulnerable members of our communities.

Today we are organized around our core competencies in three program areas. Residential Services provides therapeutic residential treatment services and foster care to youth under age 18 as well as extended foster care up to the age of 21. Homeless Youth Services provides street outreach, drop in services, emergency overnight shelter, case management, employment and housing for youth, young adults and young families experiencing homelessness. Youth and Family Services offers a full range of counseling services, including substance abuse assessments and treatment, mental health counseling, home visiting for young families, school-based prevention and parenting programs in the Issaquah, Snoqualmie and Riverview school district communities.

In FY 2015 we had the opportunity to support 4,520 young people, each one unique and valuable, with so much potential to offer our community. Your partnership and support made it possible for us to actively respond, 24 hours a day, when each one of these children and youth found themselves facing crisis, loss, neglect or a night on the streets. Thank you. Your support gave 4,520 young people a new opportunity, a new beginning and new hope for the future.

Foster Care 2795% of clients in our foster homes reported an increased feeling of safety and believed the home was a good placement for them

New Roads Extended Foster Care 19The New Roads program tripled its capacity to provide homes and services to unaccompanied youth.

Griffin Home 5394% of youth in residential treatment services reported that they increased their trust in adults during their stay at Griffin Home.

Youth Haven 9467% of the young people in our Youth Haven program moved to a safer, more stable living situation.

HOMELESS YOUTH SERVICES 1,773

Outreach 1,12770% of youth enrolled in case management moved into a transitional living program or a permanent living situation at the conclusion of their program.

The Landing 241The Landing provided 6,275 bednights of emergency shelter to homeless youth, connecting many to housing and employment.

New Ground Transitional Living 30565% of the young adults and families who exited the New Ground program moved to permanent housing or another transitional living program.

Rental Assistance 20100% of the youth enrolled in the program maintained their permanent living situation at exit.

Youth Employment 8066% of youth in the program increased their preparedness for the job market and/or secured employment.

YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES 1,961

Counseling 95582% of the youth who engaged in one-on-one counseling in our offices made significant progress in resolving or coping with their issues at the conclusion of treatment.

School Based Prevention Programs 19887% of youth enrolled in our Check & Connect program improved their work and study habits.

Chemical Dependency 80875% of the youth in crisis who received substance abuse counseling made significant progress in resolving or coping with their issues at the time they exited care.

HEALTHY START 593

Healthy Start* 59394% of eligible families showed an improvement in their positive parenting skills.

With your help, we provided foster care to youth without a home, group care for youth in need of special support, emergency shelter for youth in crisis, and extended foster care to young people ready to launch to adulthood. Last year, with your support, 193 children found a home, support and safety through Friends of Youth.

“Sharon” a new young mom, was struggling to care for her baby girl “Jessica.” After multiple negative relationships, where she endured both domestic violence and sex trafficking, Sharon felt helpless and alone. After becoming homeless, it seemed Sharon had nowhere to turn. That’s when she was referred to Friends of Youth.

Sharon and Jessica now live in one of our three transitional living programs for young families. Our program focuses on supporting young families as they learn how to parent their new little ones, while also working with them as they acquire the tools they need to transition to independence and long-term stability.

Shortly after she moved in, Sharon landed a job as a local nanny. She is able to bring Jessica with her to work, which is a huge relief! Spending the day together not only strengthens their attachment but also helps Sharon save on childcare costs. The family she works for picks her up and drops her off every day. They also provide lunch and dinner which has helped her balance her monthly budget.

The couple that Sharon nannies for have a happy and healthy relationship. They are great role models for Sharon. She constantly tells her case manager about the new things she’s learning from them about what a positive relationship is supposed to look like.

We are so excited for Sharon and all the progress she has made. We are honored to walk with her and Jessica as they begin their journey of independence, stability and happiness.
