Dear Friend,

Between 2017 and 2018, Massachusetts experienced one of the largest increases of any state in family homelessness – 17%. Our work has never been more important or more needed. Horizons continued its work this past year making a profound difference in the lives of thousands of children experiencing homelessness.

As we’ve continued to innovate this year, we’ve done so with a focus in three key areas. First, we are pursuing program excellence with better training and collaboration so that our classrooms are functioning at their best. We have made new investments in career development for our employees to both enrich their lives and improve outcomes for the families they support. Last, by focusing on both our fundraising efforts and identifying financial efficiencies in our operations, we have significantly improved Horizons’ financial position as we prepare to enter our 30th year.

With the help of many, we also embarked on a capital campaign that will allow us to enhance our education delivery, efficiency and cost structure in a new building that will become our new headquarters and centralized early education center. This progress would not be possible without the many stakeholders in this organization who value its mission and impact. On behalf of myself and the leadership team, thank you for your ongoing interest, support and commitment.

Sincerely,

Kate Barrand President & CEO

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Over the past fiscal year, Horizons made great strides in our work. Here are just a few highlights:

We continued our work on behalf of children experiencing homelessness in Boston by offering free, high quality, trauma-sensitive early education at sites in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury.

Early Education Centers

We partnered with Horizons’ parents by using

a strengths based focus to support and empower them as they build skills

and strategically set goals for a sustainable future.

Family Partnerships Program

We provided the curriculum and volunteers to make playrooms in shelters a valuable resource to families in more than 90 locations across the state of Massachusetts.

Playspace Program

We educated our legislators about the importance

of supporting policy and funding that helps address

the needs of homeless children and families.

The Little Steps, Big Mission campaign was launched in May of 2018. Led by Campaign Co-chairs Michael Eisenson of Charlesbank Capital Partners and Michael Roberge of MFS Investment Management, the goal was set to raise approx. $20 million for the new Horizons Center, a unique public/private joint venture which is the first-of-its-kind in Massachusetts and will improve the education, health and well-being of the city’s homeless families. The new center will provide on-site early education programs as well as access to a variety of social services to help parents navigate the many complexities of homelessness.

Dear Supporter,

As a direct service organization, our staff work in our classrooms, community shelters and with our families to fulfill our mission every day. We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of thousands who have donated their time, talent and treasure to make this work possible.

In 2018, Horizons overcame an operating deficit that had existed for several years to reach a balanced budget. In addition, we launched a capital campaign to build a new building that will further improve financial sustainability and create efficiencies in staffing, administration, enrollment and procurement. The impact of the campaign’s success is reflected in this year’s financials according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and IRS regulations and may warrant some explanation.

As you view the financials, you will see a significant improvement year over year. In 2017, there was an overall deficit of $930,000. In 2018, we’re reporting a $5.6 million surplus based on the GAAP principles. This reflects campaign pledges which must be accounted for in the year they are received. Readers will see this reflected as temporarily restricted. As our capital campaign continues, we will account for pledges the same way and this will continue until the conclusion of the capital campaign. Our intention is to continue to sustain a balanced budget in our daily operations to serve our mission.

Thank you for your continued investment in supporting Horizons for Homeless Children.

Sincerely, Greg Morzano Board Treasurer
