Dear Friend,
Horizons for Homeless Children, we remain steadfast in our dedication to helping young children and their families overcome the traumatic effects of homelessness. We are the Commonwealth’s only organization focusing exclusively on the needs of homeless children and their families. That’s why I’m proud to report that our programs are operating at the highest quality they’ve ever been.
Our early education centers provide young homeless children with a strong foundation to exceed in school and life. We continue to invest in the depth of our curriculum. This year we developed partnerships to expand our curriculum in STEM, literacy and music while providing extensive professional development for our teachers and program staff.
We believe in supporting families with strength-based services; providing the tools for our parents to define their short and long terms goals, and supporting them as they set a strategy to achieve these goals. We know it’s all about a solid foundation for the family, so they can thrive once they leave our programs.
Our Playspace Program continues to provide children living in shelters throughout the state with consistency during a time when they need it most. Nearly 1,000 PAL volunteers provide more than 600 hours of play each week to children living in shelter.
None of this would be possible without you. With your support, we are changing trajectories for families who are experiencing homelessness. We are making impactful, meaningful differences in their lives. We are so grateful for your help in this process.
There are exciting things to come over the next year, and I can’t wait to share them with you. Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Kate Barrand
President & CEO

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Over the past fiscal year, Horizons made great strides in our work. Here are just a few highlights:
We served 334 children and their families in our centers, and maintained our position in the top 5% of quality childcare providers in the state, earned through our QRIS Level 3 rating from the Department of Early Education and Care. We partnered with Tufts University School of Education to implement its RISE (Readiness through Integrative Science and Engineering) program, which provides professional development and coaching for our teachers, as well as parent-teacher collaboration to strengthen science and engineering learning.
Early Education Centers
Our Family Advocates partner with the parents of children enrolled in our centers. We helped them to achieve 102 goals, which ranged from opening a savings account to accessing therapy services. For the 2017-2018 school year, we supported 29 families in kindergarten placements for their children in public, charter and Catholic schools across Boston. We began an outreach initiative to kindergarten teachers to track our children’s progress after they leave our program.
Family Partnerships Program
We trained 1,104 new Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs) and placed them in shelters across the state. Through our volunteer corps, we were able to offer more than 600 hours of play each week to more than 1,300 children living in shelters across Massachusetts. We provided 26 workshops to our PALs, with topics including Yoga for Children, Activities that Heal, Trauma Informed Play, and more.
Playspace Program
We organized two legislative hearings on the refile of our legislation, An Act Providing Immediate Child Care Assistance to Homeless Families. We more than doubled the number of previous legislative cosponsors for our bill this session (70 members on our House bill, 24 on the Senate version). In addition to welcoming First Lady Lauren Baker for a visit to our programs, we actively partnered with the On Solid Ground Coalition to advance a number of initiatives to ensure access to housing stability and economic mobility for families living in Massachusetts.
