802.11p Design Challenges
• 802.11p PHY layer should be optimized to cope with the channel propagation challenges such as the multi-path fading and Doppler effects caused by high mobility
• Multi-path fading from mobile vehicles and stationary obstacles introduces inter-symbol interference (ISI) Adopting a guard interval (1.6 µs at 802.11p vs. 0.8 µs at 802.11a) to prevent symbols overlapping
• Doppler spread effect modifies the orthogonality between subcarriers by introducing an inter-carrier interference (ICI) Applying a guard band (156 kHz at 802.11p vs. 312 kHZ at 802.11a) to prevent overlapping adjacent subcarriers
