Futuro Freeform lenses are designed with Free-form Designer™.
Designed in Spain and manufactured under license in South Africa by Basic Optical Laboratories. [email protected] www.basicoptical.co.za
The Futuro-range consists of a comprehensive range of vision correction options, with the option to customise lenses to suit individual – and unique - patient requirements. All Futuro lenses are optimisable, offering Rx compensation for changing vertex distances as the eye moves away from the optical centre of the lens. Lens performance may be further enhanced by utilisation of the full potential of Free-form Designer™ - the Futuro design-tool: individualise lenses according to individual patient requirements and vertex distance, frame dimensions, patient pupil distance, panoramic & pantoscopic angles.

1. INTRODUCTION: SUMMARY OF FUTURO PRODUCT RANGE
2. OPTIMISATION:
Digital Ray-Path Technology provides the best optical quality in each part of the lens— these lenses consider the interaction
between the lens and the eye, taking into account lens position & eye movement.
This simple technique drastically impacts the optical quality of lenses. In case of a conventional lens—including freeform
lenses with conventional designs—dynamics of the eye and lens position remain static, resulting in the same design for all
patients, which renders the final wearer experience less than optimum; this decreased optical quality manifests in a smaller
near vision zone and compromised vision in the peripherals of the distance vision zone.
Digital Ray-Path calculation guarantees a first class power optimisation that considers the complete eye-lens system to
provide wearers with an accurate power in any gaze-direction. Oblique astigmatism is totally compensated for - no matter the
power or type of frame.
The picture on the the left il lustrates astigmatic lobes experienced by the wearer of a lens designed with Digital Ray-Path,
while the one on the right illustrates the same lens power in
conventional format. Optimised lenses are made possible with
Digital Ray-Path Technology, resulting in lenses with:
larger optimal vision zones
less unwanted astigmatism.
Lenses not manufactured with Digital Ray-Path Technology—i.e.
conventional designs and not optimised, are referred to as
surface power lenses.
Measuring lens power with a vertometer—conventional lenses have been developed to yield the
correct power when measured l ike this. This type of calculation is known as nominal power
calculation. It assumes that the same design is good for every prescription, i.e. a static design.
But, the eye’s optical system is very different from the optical system used to measure lens
power. The eye rotates around its centre, and the light follows an oblique trajectory that
affects the power experienced by the wearer. The resultant effect is illustrated in the second
diagram. This example shows the power experienced by the wearer of a conventional SV lens
when looking through various areas of the lens.
The difference in power than that actually
prescribed can be more than 0.50D for
lateral gaze of 30° — known as oblique
aberration, the main optical aberration that
cannot be resolved by conventional
surfacing techniques.
The last diagram illustrates the effect of a
lens with the same prescription optimised
with Digital Ray-Path Technology and
surfaced with freeform equipment. The
power experienced by the wearer is stable
throughout the lens, providing perfect
vision for every direction of gaze.
Note that optimised Rx-lenses would have
two lens powers printed on invoices: the
ordered power and the manufactured power,
i.e. the optimised power—the latter needs
to be verified.

(SIGNATURE CORRECTIONS) The ultimate utilisation of Digital Ray-Path
Technology is achieved with customised Rx-
lenses.
For optimised lenses the following input data
is required:
Monocular pd’s
Fitting heights
Frame dimensions (box measurements)
For customisation additional information is
required:
Vertex distance
Frame front angle/panoramic angle
Pantoscopic angle/tilt

The Futuro-S single vision lens offers various design options to suit the specific visual requirements of individual patients,
thus providing the practitioner with a wide range of dispensing options.
A single vision lens is just another single vision lens, one might think… providing lenses with the best possible optical performance is our goal, is
it not? Then why choose the lenses at the top (traditional design) if you can have the lenses with obviously fewer distortions at the bottom
(optimised design)?
Design options in the Futuro-S range:
Futuro Optima: optomised single vision for improved optical performance over a larger area of the lens
Acomo anti-fatigue optomised single vision lens incorporating add power into a single vision lens
distance power: 80% of lens surface for distance vision—progression length inadequate for prolonged intermediate
use

Visual fatigue affects the majority of individuals, whether their eyesight is corrected or not. Whether we like it or not, our
lifestyle & activities increasingly require prolonged use of intermediate and/or near vision, for example reading, PC work,
etc.
The scope of dispensing is increased with advanced solutions for specific needs such as these, and answering to the special requirements of the
modern lifestyle is the new Futuro Acomo anti-fatigue, designed for:
● patients between 20 years and presbyopic age;
● patients performing close work for long periods and
● patients suffering from visual fatigue, whether they wear prescription lenses or not.
The lens provides much greater comfort than a standard single-vision correction, as the patient’s natural accommodation pattern is retained.
Eighty percent of the lens surface is for distance vision, i.e. a very rapid transition to the addition power

The lens that every office-bound presbyope should have…the reduced amount of difference between the distance and near
vision zones of the lens results in the zones to be wider than those of progressive lenses. The change in power over a given
corridor distance is also not as pronounced.
Progressive and bifocal lens users lift their head 20° when they are working on computers, because they use the middle & bottom of their lens
areas to see what they are doing, resulting in strained neck & shoulder muscles. It is clear from the diagrams below that the selection of an
appropriate design would be determined by a patient’s visual requirements in the work environment. The purpose & design of the Office lens is
not to provide distance vision. However, the selection of dynamic power could result in the power in the upper part of the lens to be similar to
the patient’s distance Rx. The Futuro Office offers seven dynamic/degression powers available - the powers by which the lens power in the near
zone gradually reduces up to a point on pupil height: 0.75. 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2.00 & 2.25D. The higher the dynamic power, the longer the
reach/depth of field, but this is achieved at the expense of corridor width. It needs to be remembered that the Futuro Office had been
designed primarily for prolonged work at near & intermediate viewing distances.
Futuro-P replacement policy: If a single lens of a design other than Futuro needs to be replaced, and if that replacement could be a Futuro
design, two lenses would be provided for the price of one replacement lens.
