FUTURE TRENDS IN AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING

LATEST ADVANCEMENTS COMNG DOWN THE LINE

Page 2: Future trends in automobile engineering

Now people will not just buy a car because they are fuel efficient but they are concerned about

several other issues as well

IS THE CAR QUICK AND EASY TO REFUEL?CAN IT TRAVEL A GOOD DISTANCE BEFORE

REFUELING?IS IT AS FAST AS THE OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD?

HOW MUCH POLLUTION DOES IT PRODUCE?

IS IT COMFORTABLE AND CONVENIENT?

IS IT SAFE?WHAT ABOUT ITS “COST”?

“Design something that really solves this problem”

HYBRID CARS

A hybrid vehicle is one that combines a smaller-than-normal internal combustion gasoline engine with the electric motor of an electric-powered vehicle.

They are generally designed to be more aerodynamic than most cars, allowing them to “slice” through the air instead of pushing it out of the way.

THE MOOVIE The Moovie, an electric

powered car, designed by André Costa, doesn't look like an ordinary car. Its round shape and large side sliding doors resemble the futuristic cars we sometimes see in the movies. It seats two people, drives on big wheels and has hollow rims.

The large wheels save energy because they don't require as much work to turn as small wheels require. Also, the rear-view mirrors neatly fold up away from the sliding doors.

THE ZAP ZEBRA SEDAN This golf cart like car is

powered 100% by electricity. All it needs to get it going is an electrical socket to plug into and get it charged. The car can reach speeds up to 40 miles an hour.

If you like trucks more, you're in luck. Zap also has the Xebra PK truck. Turn it into a flat bed or keep it as is.

Car engine that runs on air

The “mini cat” which uses compressed air, is a simple and light urban car with a tubular chassis, a body of fiberglass which is glued and not welded.

This car costs about Rs.3,65,000 and will be ready to hit the roads by August 2012, as scheduled by Tata motors.

THE HUMMER 02 This Hummer is not a "gas

hog" like the other ones. Instead, it is environmentally friendly.

How? The Hummer O2 is built to emit O2 instead of CO2 by using algae to convert CO2 into pure oxygen (in other words, cleaner air).

In addition, the Hummer O2 is made of recycled parts.

Use of hydrogen as fuel Hydrogen is one such fuel that has been

proposed for the purpose which was suitable for spark ignition engines .

Hydrogen combines the properties of higher calorific value ,higher velocity of flame propagation ,non toxicity as well as lowest possible emission levels that do not affect the balance of the water of the hydrosphere.

More over the by product of combustion are devoid of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide which is the major advantage of vehicles powered by fuel cell vehicles.

The Bombardier Embrio/2025 Embrio Is a high tech unicycle or

a sleek motorcycle with retractable tiny front wheels.

Powered by hydrogen fuel cells and made of recycled aluminum and polyethylene parts, the one-wheel motorcycle rides on one wheel once speeds reach 20km an hour. At rest or in case of trouble, the tiny front wheels drop back down.

How does the Bombardier Embrio stay balanced on one wheel?

It stays balanced with something called gyroscope. It also comes with sensors, a high-performance braking system, active suspension, and night vision. Best of all, making a turn requires shifting body weight instead of steering.

HYPER CARS Instead of steel-framed

multi-ton vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, it is possible to see cars made of carbon-composite materials that are lighter and stronger than steel, with sleek aerodynamic shapes and incredibly efficient engines.

In fact, some of these cars are so efficient that you could plug them in and return power to the grid for a discount on your electric bill.

THE RECY It's called the Recy, is a

Mercedes Benz and was designed to be an environmental conscious car. It truly is.

. How? Recy is powered by a four-cylinder Blu-Tec bio-diesel motor and is made of recycled parts: wood, alloys, glass and rubber

after using it for five years, instead of adding it to the filled junkyards we have everywhere, Recy can be taken to a recycling center and be recycled again.

ULTRA-LIGHT CARS

German car startup company, Loremo, which stands for low resistance mobile, will soon put its first models on sale in Europe that weigh around 1,200 pounds (544 kilograms)

Ultra light future cars will be made of lightweight products including plastics, aluminum and metal composites and other hybrid materials. By adjusting the weight of the car parts, companies don't have to sacrifice size and can also use smaller engines.

Page 21: Future trends in automobile engineering

STACKABLE CARS When a City Car isn't in use, it would

collapse into a smaller size and stack against other City Cars, much like a row of shopping carts.

In this manner, eight vehicles could fill the area of a parking space traditionally used for one standard-sized, conventional automobile.

To use this stackable car, all you'll need to do is swipe your credit card at the nearest City Car rack.

GMC PAD The PAD is a high-tech motor home made for living in full-

time, not just for weekend trips. It's packed with the latest communications equipment and amenities, which is why GMC calls it a Living Activity Vehicle, or LAV.

The PAD includes DirecTV, On Star and XM Satellite Wi-Fi. That means users would have constant access to more than a hundred TV channels, high-speed wireless Internet, and a variety of On Star services, including vehicle diagnostics, emergency assistance, and traffic, travel and weather information.

The interior walls of the PAD are covered with giant LCD screens. A fully computerized resource management system allows the PAD to wring every last drop out of fuel and potable water supplies, with the projected time between refills lasting weeks or months. To supplement energy demands, six square meters of photovoltaic cells cover the top of the PAD, charging on-board batteries with energy collected from the sun.

FUTURISTIC CARS Futuristic car is totally adaptable. With a

press of a button, a driver will be able to broadcast any picture or message anywhere on a car’s surface beside a chosen picture that suits driver’s mood or outfit.

Car can also broadcast marketing messages. Changing a song, or a radio station, or navigation to a wanted destination will never be easier with automatic (commanded by voice) battler.

AUTONOMOUS CARS Alleviation of parking scarcity as cars could drop off

passengers, park far away where space is not scarce, and return as needed to pick up passengers.

Improved productivity as business people can work as they are being transported to and from meetings, as opposed to having to drive the vehicle.

A reduction of collisions will result in reduced pain and suffering, as well as reducing the costs of care and ease the strains on the health service providers. Increased roadway capacity due to reduced need of safety gap and the ability to better manage traffic flow.

Relief of vehicle occupants from driving and navigation chores.

ULTRA (URBAN LIGHT TRANSPORT)

ULTra (Urban Light Transport), a mass-transit system will be using driverless automatic taxi to send up to 4 passengers running on tracks which are accessible through a series of stations.

It is powered by a battery pack providing an average 2KW of motive power. It will go into operation within a year in the city of Cardiff, United Kingdom.
