Future of Indian Automobile after Nano

After launching of Tata's Nano, the competition among small cars has increased rapidly.Bajaj has also announced a car which also costs about one lakh. These cars have attractedIndian Middle Class & Lower Middle Class hugely. The Nano hasn't reached on roadsyet but it is being booked heavily by those people that doesn't have a four wheeler or can't

afford having a car.Looking to this Scenario one can assume the rush on Indian Roads by 2012. We perhapswill hardly see any two wheeler on the roads at that time. Thus launching of Nano has revolutionized the Indian Automobile Industry.

Tata has launched world's cheapest car named nano. From the arrival of

this car, the whole image of the automobile industry will change

soon. It will be born a cut throat competition in automobile industry.

A good news for the great indian middle class, they can complete

their dream to buy a cThe Nano promises to provide a safe and

environment-friendly mode of transport to a large segment of the

population who, till now, did not have that option. This will give a

major fillip to the Indian automobile industry.

After launching of Tata's Nano, the competition among small cars

has increased rapidly. Bajaj has also announced a car which also

costs about one lakh. These cars have attracted Indian Middle Class

& Lower Middle Class hugely. The Nano hasn't reached on roads

yet but it is being booked heavily by those people that doesn't have a

four wheeler or can't afford having a car.

'India has emerged as an attractive hub for making compact cars --the Nano [ Images ] means the world will now accept India's

expertise in design values and frugal engineering'aEffect of Tata

    Nano on Indian Car industry

Finally, Tatas ambitious peoples small car Nano is going to launch on 23rdMarch and there are good chances that this car will definitely change our thinkingtowards cars. Today, in India car are still believed as an object of luxury and a smallportion of our population have access to them. However, this small car from Tata canreally change our thinking and perception about ownership of cars.

So far, there exist a big price difference between a two wheeler and a car in India. Peoplecan easily buy a good two wheeler in India by paying between Rs 25000- 50000 ($ 500-1000), however, for buying a car they are required to pay at least 2 lakh Rupees ($ 4000).Now, this big price difference can be easily filled by Tatas small car Nano which willcost around Rs 1 Lakh ($2000).Moreover, with the availability of cheap car loans, it willfurther become easy for people to buy this car.

This car can easily provide a good option to large number of lower middle class of India,

who is looking for a car. The other major advantage of this car is that it is 8% smallerthan so far available small car Maruti 800 and it has 21% more interior space than it.However, there is one problem with this car that there is no back space for Luggageavailable in it because engine of Nano is in rare, though some space for Luggage isprovided in front. Many experts believe that Nano can easily work as catalyst in Indian

car market by giving revolutionary push to the Indian car market which is presentlystruggling.

Two wheeler markets in India has already seen a big jump in recent times due to strongdemand, Now we can easily hope for same show in car market also thanks to TatasNano. After the launch of Nano many experts are also comparing it with Indian Telecommarket which saw major jump after the availability of Rs 501 phone plus mobileconnection by Reliance.

At present, it is not easy to predict the final results because it will still take more than onemonth to hit Indian roads and in future, Nano will face some competition from other

small and first car by leading two wheeler manufacturer Bajaj. However, at the end, wecan say one thing with confidence that this car will have only positive effect on alreadyailing Indian car market.

The Tata Nano is an inexpensive, rear-engined, four-passengercity carbuilt by theIndian company Tata Motors and is aimed primarily at the Indian domestic market.

Tata Motors began selling its "one-lakh car" in March, 2009.[5]The cheapest car in theworld today,[6] though the price continues to rise[7] due to increasing material costs.[8] Itsnickname, "one-lakh car" is due to the Nano'sprice point, near 100,000 (one lakhrupees).

In 2008 theFinancial Times reported: "if ever there were a symbol of Indias ambitionsto become a modern nation, it would surely be the Nano, the tiny car with the even tinierprice-tag. A triumph of homegrown engineering, the $2,200 (1,490, 1,186) Nanoencapsulates the dream of millions of Indians groping for a shot at urban prosperity."[9]

"Homegrown engineering" is a relative term here as much of the systems and parts usedin the Nano may not have been developed or produced inIndia.[10]

    [edit] History

Seeing an opportunity in the great number of Indian families with two-wheeled ratherthan four-wheeled vehicles,[7] Tata Motors began development of an affordable car in2003.[11] The purchase price of this no frills auto was brought down by dispensing withmost nonessential features, reducing the amount of steel used in its construction, andrelying on low-cost Indian labor.[12]

The introduction of the Nano received much media attention due to its low price.[13]

The Nano's development was foreshadowed by the 2005 success of the affordable, 4-wheeled Tata Ace truck.[11]

Many have had great expectations for this small car, [14] some perhaps going a bit too far.One study, by Indian rating agency CRISIL, thought the Nano would expand the nation'scar market by 65%.[15]

    [edit] Singur factory pullout

Main article: Tata Nano Singur controversy

Tata Motors announced in 2006,[citation needed] that the Nano would be manufactured inSingur, West Bengal,[16]helped in part by a forced acquisition and reuse of farmland bythe West Bengal state government[16]to entice Tata to build there.[16] Local farmers soonbegan protesting the forced acquisition of their land for the new factory.[17] As the protestscontinued through 2007 and 2008,[11] Tata first delayed the Nano launch[18] and laterdecided to build the car in a different state (Gujarat) instead.[2]

    [edit] Design

    A Tata Nano in silver.

The car's exterior was designed at Italy's Institute of Development in AutomotiveEngineering.[11]

    [edit] Cost cutting features

The Nano's design implements many cost-reducing innovations.

The Nano'strunkis only accessible from inside the car, as the rear hatch does not

    open.[19]

One windscreen wiper instead of the usual pair[13]

Nopower steering, unnecessary due to its light weight[13]

Three lug nuts on the wheels instead of the usual four[20]

Only onewing mirror[13] No radio or CD player[13]

    No airbags in basic model[13]

    623cc engine has only 2 cylinders[13]

    [edit] Price

Wikinews has related news: World's least cost car launched in India, will go onsale in April

Announcing the vehicle as the least expensiveproduction carin the world,[21] Tata aimed

for a starting price of one lakh, or 100,000, rupees. This was approximately US$2000 atthe time.[22] As of December, 2010, the cheapest Nano costs around US$2900.[7]

Rapidly rising material prices[8] (up 13% to 23% over the cars development time [23])caused it to cost somewhat more than 1 lakh (US$2,220).[24]

In late October 2010, Reuters reported that prices will be raised by an average of 9,000rupees (US$202) from November because of rising material costs.[25]

    [edit] Model versions

    Tata Nano Europa

At its launch the Nano was available in three trim levels:[24]

the basic Std priced at 142,000 (US$3,152.4) has no extras the deluxe Cx at 171,000 (US$3,796.2) has air conditioning the luxury Lx at 195,000 (US$4,329) has air conditioning and power windows

    [edit] Europa

This export version of the Nano was first shown at the 2009Geneva Motor Show[26] buthas yet to go on sale. Heavily upgraded to meet EU safety and emission standards, the car

will have a number of improvements over the standard Nano, including an extendedwheelbase, a new 3-cylinder engine, power steering, an anti-lock braking system (ABS)and an improved interior and exterior.[26]The Nano Europa will be more expensive, heavier, and less fuel efficient than the standard Nano with prices said to be aroundUS$6000.[27]

to be able to travel approximately 200 kilometres (120 mi) on US$3 of electricity tocompress the air,[33]Tata's Vice President of Engineering Systems confirmed in late 2009that vehicle range continues to be a problem.[32]

Unless there is some form of insulation that can keep the stored air from cooling,

compressed air cars waste much of the charging power as heat and then form ice thattends to clog the air engine when driving.[citation needed]

    [edit] Diesel

A website has speculated that the Nano might be made available with a diesel engine.[34]

Tata motors have not confirmed this but have stated, "As of now there is no Dieselvariant of the Nano. The Nano is only available in a Petrol version."[35]

    [edit] Electric vehicle

Tata has discussed the possibility of producing an electric version,[36]

and while itshowcased an electric vehicleNano at the 2010Geneva Motor Show,[37]no such car iscurrently on the market.

If an EV Nano is sold it is expected to be the "world's cheapest electric car",[38] uselithium-ion batteries, and have a range of 80 miles (130 km). [39] A Norwegian electric carspecialist, Miljbil Grenland AS, has been named as a supposed partner in the project.[36]

    [edit] Safety concern

A small number of fire incidents involving the Nano were reported. [7] This led Tata to add

safety devices to the vehicle,[7] although no recall was initiated and according to Tata, thecar is safe.[7] Its safety is relative however, as the Nano has no airbags, passenger-sidewing mirror, orcrumple zone.

    [edit] Effects

The introduction of a cheap, mass market auto such as the Nano is bound to have someunforeseen effects.

    [edit] Safer Travel

Nano driving is safer than that of the currently used two-wheelers especially duringmonsoon, when heavy rains can make traveling difficult on two-wheelers due to wetroads.

    10/13

As the Nano was designed for a population currently using eco-friendly bicycles andmotorcycles,[7] environmentalists are concerned by the increase inpollution that wouldfollow a mass motorization in developing countries such as India.[13]

The Nano has lower emissions than the average Volkswagen, which is a much larger car.[13]

    [edit] Indian used car market

The Nano is thought to have affected theused carmarket in India, as some Indians mayopt to buy a Nano rather than a used vehicle. The new-car market is also being affected.Sales of new Maruti 800s, the second-cheapest car in India, dropped by 20% and usedmodels by 30% immediately prior to the Nano's introduction.[40]

    [edit] Awards

2010 Business Standard Motoring Indian car of the year[41] 2010 Bloomberg UTV-Autocar car of the year[42]

2010 Edison Awards, first place in the transportation category[43]

2010 Good Design Awards, in the category oftransportation[44]

    [edit] In the media

"Small Wonder: The Making of Nano", is a book on creation of Tata Nano.[45]

    [edit] Export

The company will export the vehicles to Indonesia, Thailand,Sri Lanka and Africa atDecember 2011. The vehicles will meet the regulation requirements at these countries.[46]

NEW DELHI: General Motors has decided to make a pitch in thelow-cost car segment and plans to roll out a mini car priced between $3500 and$4000 (Rs 1.4-1.6 lakh approximately) in India, making it cheaper than the Maruti800 but a little dearer than the Tata Nano, a senior company official said. NickReilly, GM Asia-Pacific president and group V-P, said India would play a leadrole in the development of the car that would be sold in overseas markets as welland priced below the 'Chevrolet Spark', the company's current cheapest model inIndia that costs about $7,000 (Rs 2.8 lakh)

s of petrol. atas nano dubbed as Peoples car is the talk of the world. Almost all radiochannels, newspapers are covering it breathlessly.I was driving from Norwood, MA to Acton, MA for my work and turned on Radio FMchannel 90.9 and to my surprise there was an ongoing discussion of Peoples car. Therewere echos from people in Afghanistan, Europe etc wanting to buy this car. However, there were also people from Ghana who said big NO for this car as they have seennegative side of it due to cheap cars from Korea.

This is what analysts are saying: Tatas Nano (alias JEH) could be a huge hit in India. This type of car may work in India in the present conditions of Road infra structure. There is a huge apetitie for such cheap car from Lower and middle class families, whowould want to switch from 2 wheelers and also from first time car buyers. Especiallyfamilies who wanted to buy 2 wheelers to carry their entire family of 3-5 would nowswitch to buy this cheap car instead of 2 wheelers from Bajaj, Hero Honda.Youngsters will still prefer 2 wheelers though.

Tatas car can push the whole auto indsutry into a tailspin. This is my view though.A) Tatas nano has the immediate effect of putting a price pressures on 2 wheelers, 3wheelers and 4 wheelers and ultimately affecting their margins. This will negatively

effect the top line and bottom line of all the auto majors. Utlimately Indian people willbenefit as the prices will be drastically reduced by Tatas competitors.Net affect: 2 wheelers will become lot cheaper. 2-3 lacs car prices will come down andultimately become attractive to the point that Tatas nano buyers will start looking aroundfor better options such as safety, design and status.Tatas nano can create class wars among car buyers.B) Tatas nano can aggravate our traffic jams and burden our creeking infratructure.Unless government does something immediately, 1-2 years from now, you will see traffic

jams for hours. However, contrary to this opinion, if Road infratructure improves inline with Westernstandards, Tatas car may not be suitable for fast mobility as their engines are V3standard and their max speed is much less compared to what it should be on good raods.Tatas car wil again impede the fast mobility and again create bottlenecks.

    C) India has to spend lot on importing OIL. Almost 2-3 times what it does now. Theirwill be huge pent up demand for petrol.D) Safety issues will crop.

If i were you, this is what i will do.Instead of spending 1 Lack rupees on tatas nano, i will but Tata Motors stock in openmarket. No doubt, tata motor stock will go up for next few quarters as their sales volume will pickup. Meanwhile, the car prices and the stock price of other auto majors will come down. Iwill book profits on tata motor stock and buy Maruti car or other brand with the profits intata motor stock.

    Thanks
