According to the FInES Research Roadmap 2025, Sensing Enterprise and Liquid Enterprise are two Qualities of Being which are considered strategic for any future enterprise.

• The Sensing Enterprise will emerge with the evolution of the Internet of Things, when objects, equipment, and technological infrastructures will exhibit advanced networking and processing capabilities, actively cooperating to form a sort of 'nervous system' within the enterprise next generation.

• The Liquid Enterprise is an enterprise having fuzzy boundaries, in terms of human resources, markets, products and processes. Its strategies and operational models will make it difficult to distinguish the inside and the outside.

The intuition of this project proposal is to try to explain the sensing enterprise by means of a metaphor taken form physics and strongly supported by the Liquid Enterprise idea.

The Sensing-Liquid Enterprise as a pot internally subdivided into three sectors by means of three membranes and forming the Real-Digital-Virtual sectors. ‐ A blue liquid is poured into the first sector → Real World population‐ A red liquid into the second sector → Digital World population‐ A green liquid into the third sector → Virtual World population

Project Concept

If the membranes are semi-permeable, by following the rules of osmosis which characterises each of the three membranes, the liquid particles could pass through

them and influence the neighbouring world, so that in reality in the blue Real World we could also have red-green shadow ambassadors of the Digital/Virtual World and

similarly for the other Worlds.

Project Mission

The main objective of the OSMOSE project is to develop a reference architecture, a middleware and some prototypal applications for the Sensing-Liquid Enterprise, by interconnecting Real, Digital and Virtual

worlds in the same way a semi-permeable membrane permits the flow of liquid particles through itself.

The OSMOSE project will design and develop:• Reference Architecture for modelling and managing shadow images of

the same Sensing-Liquid Enterprise in the three interconnected worlds regarding both immaterial and material liquid flows under flexible security and privacy capability rules: Actors (RW), Agents (DW), Avatars (VW), representing humans and smart objects, interact and negotiate;

• Event-driven and Service-oriented Osmiotic Middleware to constantly and automatically keep background consistency between the three worlds through the implementation of three pairs of basic processes:‐ Virtualization RW-VW; ‐ Augmentation VW-RW;‐ Digitalization RW-DW;‐ Actuation DW-RW;‐ Simulation DW-VW;‐ Enrichment VW-DW;

• Liquid Stargate which allows human users to browse the relevant real-digital-virtual assets in an integrated multi world representation view, to configure the behaviour of their human RW Actors - DW Agents - VW Avatars and to support knowledge sharing and experiences/emotions exchange, by crossing seamlessly the three worlds gates;

• Innovative Sensing-Liquid Operations Management application in the Aerospace Domain concerned with helicopters’ pilots training via Real and Virtual World flight simulators;

• Innovative Sensing-Liquid Supply Chain Management application in the Automotive Domain concerned with camshafts life cycle traceability.

The OSMOSE Project will develop and experiment significant proof-of-concept scenarios and environments in two European industrial domains, assessing technology, socio-technical implications, privacy and security issues. The two proof of concept cases are:

OSMOSE Proof-of-Concept scenarios

• Aviation: the scenario is based on the operations of a Flight Simulator AW139 model currently adopted by different customers around the world

• Automotive: the pilot considers the use of OSMOSE to optimise and manage a global manufacturing process of automotive camshafts

OSMOSE Impacts

OSMOSE Impact Strategy to Sensing Liquid Digital Enterprises

• The OSMOSE impact is on delivering to manufacturing industries in various sectors the required enablers for their sensing-liquid digital transformation and connecting the specific enablers to the digital capabilities of the Future Internet.

OSMOSE Technology Impact

• OSMOSE will make an impact in the realm of the Pervasive Internet and Smart Business operation through digital sensing enterprises. OSMOSE provides a roadmap and a technology platform that should support the transition and implementation of European SMEs of new business models and strategies in the digital world .

OSMOSE Socio-Economic Impact • Positive impact on the values of the FI, which will be requested to provide specific technical support to make labour

intensive, European workplaces more sustainable and of better quality. OSMOSE will propose new uses on the FI Core Platform support for 3D and Augmented Reality content in a mobile context, smart object interaction, etc. Economic and sustainability interest behind the OSMOSE trials should be properly balanced and accommodated in the FI context.

OSMOSE Impact in the Proofs of Concept• The AW proof of concept is focusing on post-delivery management of high-value complex industrial products such as

helicopters’ simulators• For the EPC proof of concept, the value of the asset in question is much lower, but the number of assets and artefact to

consider much higher, as well as its dispersion around the world.
