Your inspirational fun-filled, guide to fundraising for Project Compassion 2018

THE MORE YOU RAISE, THE MORE WE CAN ACHIEVE.

FUNDRAISING IDEAS

Welcome to Project Compassion 2018!2018 is the Year of Youth and, as part of that, we have nominated A Just Future as our campaign theme. The future belongs to all of us, but it is the young who take it on with courage and innovation. It’s so inspiring to work with young women and men, experience their energy and learn about their visions for the world they want to live in. It is their courage and goodness that will help to create a just future for all.

When you fundraise for Project Compassion you help equip young people in vulnerable communities with skills to become the leaders of tomorrow. With your support, Caritas Australia and our partners help to empower people and communities to eradicate poverty in all its forms. Project Compassion is an opportunity to put your faith into action to contribute to this work.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

On the following pages you’ll find inspiration, ideas and some fantastic tips that will help you and your school, parish or local community bring a just future for all a little bit closer by raising essential funds for Project Compassion.

Whether you run a Caritas Ks event, or put on a pancake flip; set up a raffle or hold a ‘Trash and Treasure’ fair, the important thing to know is – every dollar you raise is vital. Your funds contribute to programs in Australia and overseas that will help provide young people with skills and opportunities to live with dignity, and give something back to their own communities for the future.

A just future starts with your support, so please get your friends, family, school and parish involved – when we work together everyone benefits.

On behalf of everyone at Caritas, I’d like to wish you every blessing for this holy season. And a great many thanks for your time, your energy and your compassion.

FUNDRAISING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

This year Project Compassion demonstrates how Caritas Australia empowers young people to become channels of our love and positive change for their entire communities. A Just Future is possible for all generations and communities, who are part of one human family. A Just Future starts today.

YOUR FUNDRAISING IS HELPING TO CREATE A JUST FUTUREIn Nepal, Janaki grew up in poverty and disadvantage. In her community young people had to walk many kilometres each day to work in fields and collect food, just to have enough to eat. A sustainable livelihood seemed impossible for Janaki.

But things are better now. Since participating in our Children and Youth Empowerment Program, she has transformed her life. She’s become an inspirational community leader, and has learnt the skills to run her own sewing business. Now that she’s in control of her livelihood, Janaki is looking to the future and mentoring others so they can follow in her footsteps and become independent.

BECOME A MONTHLY GIVERYou can make an ongoing commitment to people living on the global margins and put your compassion into action all year round . Find out more about becoming a Caritas Neighbour at www.caritas.org.au/hope or call 1800 024 413.

To raise money you can… Hold a pancake stall in a busy location and sell pancakes for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Offer special toppings for an additional donation.Hold a pancake-making contest: Who can make the roundest pancake? The biggest? The tallest stack in 5 minutes? Best flip? The most beautifully decorated pancake? The silliest?Entrants donate to compete and receive a small prize (along with their pancakes) as a reward.Do a pancake flip race: Participants with frying pans toss pancakes into the air and catch them in the pan while running.Ask for a gold coin donation to enter. The winner gets double toppings for their pancake!

Hold a pancake Flipathon: Everyone lines up together with a pan and pancake for a sponsored 100 flips. Hold a highest flip or furthest flip competition with an entry fee.

Pancake Day is on Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Shrove Tuesday began as a way to use up rich foods like eggs, milk and sugar before the 40 days of Lent. Today, making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is a worldwide tradition and a great way to raise money for Project Compassion.

FUNDRAISING! HAVE FUN

A just future starts with your support, so get creative and get involved. The best way to inspire other people to get on-board is to do something you enjoy! If you have fun with it, so will everyone else. We’ve put together some ideas here to kick-start your imagination, but feel free to adapt, change and tailor them to suit you, your community, your school or parish.

ART AUCTIONCalling all artists! Ask members of your school group or parish to use their favourite medium (paint, textiles, watercolour, sculpture, collage etc) to create works of art to be auctioned off as a fundraiser for Project Compassion.Set a theme that revolves around empowerment, harmony and positive futures.Hold a silent auction for the pieces – this can even be done online – or throw an event to get bidders excited to purchase these bespoke artworks.

BALLOON RAFFLEAsk people to donate prizes for a Project Compassion raffle.Write the names of each prize on a slip of paper. Before blowing up your balloons insert slips of paper into them.Inflate the ‘prize’ balloons, along with dozens of empty ‘non-prize’ balloons.Sell the balloons. When they’re popped (noisy fun!) participants discover if they’ve won a prize!

Easter is a time of new beginnings, and when we look to the future it can be handy to shed some of the things from the past. That makes it the perfect time to organise a “Trash and Treasure” stall.Participants donate quality goods that they no longer need, then open the stall to the public, wider community or school group.Sell the items to people who can see a useful place for them in their future. All proceeds go to Project Compassion.

FUTURE FOCUSGet trivial! Hold a trivia event, using ‘The Future’ as your theme.Tailor the questions to the level of your audience – simpler for children, more challenging for adults.Ask for a donation to participate, and give small (donated) prizes to the winners.

FUTURE FAMOUSDo you have any up-and-coming talent in your community? Does the next Jerry Seinfeld live on your street? Maybe the future Cold Play is at your school? Or perhaps the next winner of The Voice is in your parish? Give them an opportunity to shine at a Project Compassion talent show. Charge a donation for admission and invite the whole community. Big or small this event can really bring people together for a fun evening or afternoon. To raise even more funds, run a cake stall or pop corn stand.

Inihaw na Bangus or grilled, stuffed fish, is one of the most popular dishes in the Philippines. It’s tangy, light and delicious, and the best news is that it not only tastes fantastic, but it also looks impressive and is very easy and quick to make.

Serve with toyomansi and steamed rice.

using a paper towel.2.  Open the incision and then rub

the salt on the inside of the fish. The fish should have an incision in the belly area.

3.  Meanwhile, combine tomato, onion, and ginger in a large bowl. Squeeze some lemon juice in and add the ground black pepper. Gently stir.

4. Stuff the mixture inside the fish.5.  Grill or BBQ the fish, on a banana

leaf or tin foil, under medium heat for about 10 to 12 minutes per side.

6.  Serve with toyomansi and steamed rice.

FEELING STUCK?DOG-WALKING FOR A BETTER WORLDEight-year-old Melbourne girl Emily, took her fundraising through the WOOF last year!Entrepreneurial young Emily wanted to earn pocket money and raise funds for Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion 17. So, she and her dad brainstormed a few ideas before deciding to take the lead on dog-walking.“We came up with the idea to start a small dog-walking business around our area, where I accompany her on every walk and ensure the pooches return home happy,” says her dad Brendan.Emily’s creative fundraising idea was very successful on all fronts - she raised much-needed funds for PC17 and made a whole pack of furry new friends!

PIG-TURE PERFECT FUNDRAISING!Terrigal NSW school-girl Ivy has a grandmother in South Africa who farms pigs. So Ivy was excited to discover that she could raise funds to provide pigs for families in the Philippines.Ivy raised more than $1000 for Project Compassion 2017 by sacrificing her weekly canteen money and selling some of her old toys during Lent. She also set up an online fundraising page where the community could sponsor her.“We learnt at school how we can help others easily by giving up things that are important to us,” Ivy said. “It was easy to do because I knew I was helping others.”

SMORGASBORD OF FUNDRAISINGStudents at Columba Catholic College (Qld) are all-systems-GO when it comes to fundraising for Project Compassion. Each year these industrious students team up with another local school on Shrove Tuesday to make and sell pikelets. Students at both schools can’t wait to make their donation to enjoy the delicious pikelets served with a choice of jams and syrups.Over the following weeks students then put on a series of popular Easter Egg Raffles that raise even more funds for Project Compassion, and the school holds “free dress days” where students make a donation so they ditch their uniforms for a day and wear casual clothes. Thanks for the inspiration Columba Catholic College!
