What is the SMSCS’s Mission? What is our Purpose?
Spring 2012 Edition
The SMSCS will be developing a Registration Package andmaking it available within the next few weeks. Although theseminars will be open to everyone, we do anticipate atremendous response and therefore a priority will be givento the SMSCS’s most ‘active’ members and consultants asa maximum limit of registrants has been mandated by theFMS group. There will be a reduced rate for members andconsultants that register for both Levels. Should theresponse be overwhelming and we do have to limitnumbers, we may in fact host another one in the Spring/Summer of 2013.
-Functional Movement Systems-Level 1 and 2 Seminars to be Offered

After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from our members, the SMSCS has decided to organizeand host the Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Movement Systems seminars as our Sport Med SaturdayConference for 2012.
How it Works - Simplifying Movement
Put simply, the FMS is a ranking and grading system thatdocuments movement patterns that are key to normalfunction. By screening these patterns, the FMS readilyidentifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These areissues that can reduce the effects of functional training andphysical conditioning and distort body awareness.
The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which is used to target problems and track progress. Thisscoring system is directly linked to the most beneficialcorrective exercises to restore mechanically soundmovement patterns. The philosophy behind the FMS isrooted in the concept that, in order to maximizeperformance, the whole body must be functioning properly. When the body is considered as a chain of individualelements, it’s reasonable that a weak link weakens theentire chain. Ignoring a weak link increases the potential fordisaster, and strengthening the wrong links will not improve
identify and resolve any weak links that may bejeopardizing the body and its healthy motion.
The FMS is applicable to any population in fitness or sportsconditioning. Its standardization streamlines assessmentand makes recommending exercises more efficient. Andthe language of FMS makes it easy to communicate withM.D.’s, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis & redundant work.
Exercise professionals monitor the FMS score to trackprogress and to identify those exercises that will be mosteffective to restore proper movement and build strength ineach individual.
What it Does - Widespread Benefits
Communication - The FMS utilizes simple language, making it easy for individuals, exercise professionals, andphysicians to communicate clearly about progress andtreatment. ...con’t on Page 3

The Seminars will be taking place in Saskatoon on theweekend of October 26 - 28. The Level 2 Seminar will thenget underway on Saturday around late afternoon andending around 6:00pm on Sunday. You must havecompleted the Level 1 seminar before you can take Level2. In my career I have always believed that I was blessed to be in such aprofession (physiotherapy), which to me implied some moralresponsibility to give back to my profession. I have been involved involunteering with various boards or organizations throughout my careerbut certainly without question my favorite has always been the SportMedicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. I therefore am cominginto this position not saying to myself “oh, what have I volunteered for”,but instead what could we or should we accomplish.
I am old enough to recall when the Council was just the Sport MedicineCouncil (no amalgamation with Science yet) when Linda Detta was theExecutive Director. I remember the first 10 sport first aid courses taughton a road trip with Dr. Gulka and myself (along with occasionally otherssuch as Jack Alexander or Chuck Armstrong). On that note I believe it willbe a very rewarding, and no doubt, a great time when we celebrate theCouncils 25th anniversary in 2013 when we have the opportunity tomeet, greet and discuss such old times. This Sport Medicine and Science Council’s increased role with SaskSport Inc. and overall improvement is due in large part to the leadershipprovided by current executive director Mark Henry, as well as alwayshaving an active and engaging board of directors. Mark hasstrengthened the organization further through key hiring of staff, throughhis ability to balance the budgets in the various economic times faced, and by keeping the board involved in all aspects of the Council’s activity. As mentioned, we still maintain a very active and engaged board whichwill be very beneficial to myself and all staff. We have exceptionalmanagerial staff that has helped the Council become one of the moststable and vital members of Sask Sport Inc. However, there is still muchthat we can accomplish. Under Dale Pitura’s capable leadership wedeveloped a strategic planning model that I plan to follow through with,as well as continue to expand the Council’s role within the Sask Sportsystem and Saskatchewan communities as a whole. Marlys Misfeldt’sstrong leadership qualities during her time as President over the pasttwo years is something that I hope to be able to emulate during my termas President. I look forward to working with the board of directors and everyoneinvolved with the Council. Let’s get started!

Stephanie Langdon Accepts Contract Role with the SMSCS

I am very excited to continue to work with the SportMedicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan duringHeather Hynes’s one-year maternity leave. I enjoy mywork as a consultant and the interactions I have withteams and wellness/physical education classes. Sportnutrition is my area of interest in dietetics due to mybackground as a high performance athlete. I grew upplaying numerous sports (softball, basketball, crosscountry, track & field, badminton, and volleyball) inSaskatoon and played volleyball for Team Saskatchewan,Team Canada (Junior, B,
FISU, and Senior), the University ofSaskatchewan Huskies, and twoprofessional teams in Finland (Pislaplokiand OrPo).
Through my practice (SomethingNutrishus Counselling & Coaching) andthe SMSCS, I am able to stay connected to theathletic world. I love helping people lead healthier livesand progress to a higher level of sport performance.
(Ottawa, Ontario – March 1, 2012) – The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) advises athletes and supportpersonnel that supplements and sport nutrition products continue to be the source of doping violations, around theworld and here at home. “Many Canadian athletes take supplements, including pre-workout products, proteinpowders, energy drinks and vitamins,” said Paul Melia, President and CEO of the CCES. “Many of these productscontain banned substances, which may be revealed only after they cause a positive test. I don’t think athletes fullyappreciate the damage that taking supplements could do to their athletic career.” A good example of this majorproblem is the high number of recent violations for methylhexaneamine. On the World Anti-Doping Agency’s(WADA) Prohibited List, methylhexaneamine (dimethylpentylamine) is listed as a stimulant, prohibited in-competition.
Listed on the label?Supplements are tricky because their labels cannot be trusted. Some manufacturers are up front about the factthat their products contain banned substances and list them on the label. Other manufacturers producesupplements that contain banned substances that are NOT listed on the label, either deliberately or due tocontamination.Examples of products that currently list some form of methylhexaneamine as an ingredient on the label include:
Jack3d – USPlabs (www.usplabsdirect.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=115)OxyELITE Pro – USPlabs (www.usplabsdirect.com/OxyELITE-Pro)Hemo-Rage Black Ultra Concentrate – Nutrex (underground.nutrex.com/products/hemo-rageUC.asp)Rezolution – LG Sciences (www.lgsciences.com/Rezolution-Diet-Pill-p/rezolution.htm)
These manufacturers are quite straightforward about the doping risk to athletes. The USPlabs website currentlystates: “As with any dietary supplement, consult with your representative from the testing agency to ensure yoursupplementation is within guidelines. We strongly recommend you do not use any dietary supplement beforegetting clearance from your governing body. If you cannot obtain clearance, do not use the product.”
