With Spring and Bike toWork Day (May 18, 2018)quickly approaching we

wanted to take some time totalk about bike shares!

A bike share program is a great way toencourage employees to utilize alternativesto driving alone. Bike shares provide anopportunity to enhance employee first andlast mile connections to and from localtrain stations and allow employees to makeshort trips throughout the day, as well asgetting around within a business park orlarger office campus.

Tech-on-bike: Tech-on-bike is a popular type of bike

share program for employers. In this typeof bike share, there is no docking station forbicycles, rather the bicycles are directlyequipped with the locking and rental tech-nology. To access the bike, users reserve

and unlock the bikes through a smart-phone application. This allows for the flex-ibility of the bicycle to be picked up anddropped off at any location, as well as notas costly because there is no infrastructureneeded for locking the bikes.

Pros: • Minimizes the use of single vehicle

occupancy for mid-day trips • Encourages the use of public transit • Secure and user-friendly • Employee amenity

Is your company interested in starting abike share program? Conducting a bike-share feasibility study is the first step indeveloping and implementing a program.Contact Stacey Henrich for help in gettingyour bike share program started!

Stacey Henrich works as a TDMManager with GVF. To reach Stacey byemail: [email protected], or by phone:(610)354-8899.

FEATURED MEMBERBENEFITOF THE MONTH

ANNUAL BUDGET ADDRESSBy Alex Rahn, Wanner Associates

During the Annual Budget address, GovernorTom Wolf stated, “It’s our turn to build a strongerand fairer economy; healthier and safer commu-nities; and new opportunities for the next gener-ation,” as he addressed the appropriations offunds to the meaningful programs offered tocommunities across Pennsylvania. The fundingtowards improving child welfare, home andcommunity based services, and personal assis-tance services are sufficient to the point of mak-ing a positive impact on Pennsylvania families. With an increase of over half a million dollars toeducation, Pennsylvania children will directlybenefit with increased spending in programssuch as early intervention, youth developmentcenters, and special education. Alongside edu-cational appropriations there was a rise inspending on Pennsylvania children in the areasof youth development services, county childwelfare, and community-based family centers. The funding that has maintained its value is highin quantity and budget cuts were minimal forPennsylvania’s Health and Human Services.Along with this progress made for the well beingof families across the commonwealth businessessaw positive changes as well.

With an increase in areas such as Marketing toAttract Business, and minor decreases toWorkers Compensation Payments the state islooking to provide a flourishing environment forPennsylvania’s economy and workers.Workforce development remained a prominenttheme in Governor Wolf’s speech as he contin-ued his address, “Developing a workforce thatcan compete and win in the 21st-century econo-my is the single best way to help Pennsylvaniabusinesses grow – and attract new businesses to

our Commonwealth.” Tom Wolf also has takenthe initiative to push minimum wage from $7.25an hour to $15.00 an hour providing a longawaited change for hourly waged workers. Inaddition, Wolf looks to allocate nearly $40 mil-lion to the PASmart program aiding in develop-ing modern day job skills for the 21st centurycareer paths. Other workforce development ini-tiatives the Governor had addressed include, PAFirst Workforce Development, ManufacturingPa, The Manufacturing Innovation Program, and Pennsylvania’s Industrial Resource Centers.Programs such as Manufacturing Pa promotethe PA Manufacturing Training-to-Career GrantProgram, putting more Pennsylvania citizens towork in reliable occupations. Along with work-force development there was also mention of aseverance tax to reap the monetary benefits ofPennsylvania’s abundance in natural resources. To follow progress in educational and economicsectors of Pennsylvania the Governor alsobrought to light consolidating and streamliningagency activity in order to provide a better func-tioning legislative process for citizens.

By providing agency consolidations Wolfhopes to cut spending and provide better acces-sible legislatures to Pennsylvania. As thePennsylvania General Assembly witnessed theGovernor’s Budget Address it was clear Wolfstruck a positive note with his allocations to edu-cation, promoting a better economy, and provid-ing for the families across Pennsylvania. Uponthe arrival of June 30, 2018 the fiscal year willcome to a close and a balanced budget will haveto be sanctioned to keep Pennsylvania legisla-tures productively operating. To reach Alex: call 717.236.2050 or email [email protected]
