Assisted Living Communities
Specializing in Memory Care
A better option
What is changing?
We’re going from this.... To this…
Why are we making this change?
Many people have preconceived opinions about seniors who live with memory loss. They believe that they are frail, old, senile and incapable of living life.We want to create a better understanding of both memory loss and memory care, with both our prospective families and our key referrals sources. We know our residents who live with memory loss are still able to perform daily tasks and routines, and can function independently. Our residents are living vibrant, meaningful lives!
So why is an Assisted Living community that specializes in Memory Care a better option for families?
1. A resident living with memory loss may find him/herself “lost” or “confused” in a senior living environment that doesn’t recognize the challenges of memory loss.
2. A resident may not be able to interact with other residents, causing them to withdraw or disengage from others.
3. Too much stimulation in typical retirement community can be stressful and confusing. 4. Cues and reminders may be necessary so they can live their life in a dignified manner, as
independently as possible.
How does Emeritus offer expertise in Memory Care?
At Emeritus, we understand that a resident living with memory loss experiences its symptoms and progression differently –these are called the “stages” of memory loss.Join Their Journey® is our memory care program that gives us the ability to meet our residents’ needs at the right time…no matter what their stage of memory loss.

UnderstandingAssisted Living Communities
Specializing in Memory Care
Some examples of Join Their Journey® programming that are specifically designed for different stages of Memory Loss:
Experiencing Classical Music:
• A resident in early stage memory loss would enjoy an outing to hear the symphony• A resident in mid stage memory loss would enjoy a performance of a violinist at the community• A resident in late stage memory loss would enjoy listening to a CD of a concerto
Appreciating Art:
• A resident in early stage memory loss would enjoy a trip to the museum and listening to a lecture• A resident in mid stage memory loss would enjoy drawing or painting on an easel in the community• A resident in late stage memory loss would enjoy looking at a large picture book of art collections with
a care giver
Cooking a new recipe or Baking a sweet treat:
• A resident in early stage memory loss would enjoy a cooking class with an instructor and making the recipe
• A resident in mid stage memory loss would enjoy assisting a care giver craft the recipe (stirring, decorating a cake, etc.)
• A resident in late stage memory loss would enjoy tasting and enjoying the delicious treat
Why is this important to our customers?
1. We understand the different stages of memory loss, so that we can provide better programming for our residents.
2. We create and design activities so that we meet the right needs at the right time3. We structure the daily calendar of activities to best match the strengths and challenges of each resident4. We offer a patient, compassionate care staff who undergo specialized memory care training so that
they recognize the stages – and challenges – of memory loss5. We eliminate the need to move to a different care facility should care needs change.
With our Join Their Journey® programming, we dispel these myths of “memory loss” and negative perceptions of “Memory Care” communities. Our goal is to help each resident, despite their stage of memory loss, be purposeful and successful every day.

An Interest in TravelResidents enjoy a volunteer run pro-gram that present travel slides from both domestic and international adven-tures. Participating in discussion group based on past personal experience.
Residents participate in our arm chair travel series. The travelogues high-light personal experiences that include the places our residents have lived & places they vacationed.
Residents reminisce about travel using multi sensory cues including photos of familiar landmarks, personal information from life stories, food and music from the area.
An Interest in the Creative ArtsBased on personal preferences, resi-dents regularly take outings to area art museums, galleries and local special events.
Residents are given the opportunity to participate in the creative arts through scheduled programs that include paint-ing, drawing and crafts. Step by step directions allow residents to feel suc-cessful through the process.
The creative arts become multi sensory in this stage. Staff utilize visuals and tactile cues: photos of famous works of art, a variety of art supplies and sooth-ing classical music.
An Interest in Volunteer WorkThroughout the year, residents are given the opportunity to continue to give back to the community. Some opportu-nities include helping out with our local meals on wheels program, involvement in intergenerational programs and as-sisting at local special events.
Residents continue to provide service in our community. Resident ‘volunteers’ assist with simple chores and life skills at Emeritus, participate in intergenera-tional programs and assist with special events.
With step by step guidance from our staff, residents are still able to complete
on-site intergenerational programs.
An Interest in Physical Fitness
daily for all residents. In the early stage, residents choose from volunteer run yoga class, walking club, in-house therapy class and other sports themed programs (i.e. golf putting, bowling, dance, etc…)
classes hosted by our in-house therapy group and ‘sittercise’ programs that incorporate movement, music, thera-bands and light weights.
Exercise programs in this stage focus on range or motion, stretching, relax-ation and mobility. Including music to these movements allow for a multi-sensory experience.
