Student WelcomeHello from Stoke on Trent CollegeAt Stoke on Trent College we believe in preparing young people for the world of work. We pride ourselves on offering the widest range of technical and professional courses, Traineeships and Apprenticeships to help you develop employability skills and prepare for your chosen career or progression to higher education.
We encourage every learner to make the most of their time with us through our extensive leaner support, state-of-the-art facilities, Institute of Sports Performance, skills competitions and wide range of enrichment activities that make us the first choice for over 10,000 learners every year.
So whatever your choice of career, there has never been a better time to choose Stoke on Trent College.
College is about learning new skills as well as embracing all the fun activities on offer and making the most of college life. I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone, reading at the Easter service and supporting the Student Union but it has been well worth it. I want to be an army chef and my tutors have encouraged me to throw myself into all the challenges of the course. I was a little nervous at first but I am so proud of what I have achieved. Stoke on Trent College is a great place to learn.

Study ProgrammesEvery 16-18 year-old full-time learner follows a Study Programme, which is made up of 4 elements.
This is your main technical or professional subject, in which you’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification and skills that you can apply in employment or that will help you progress to further study.
All students have to gain work experience, which should be with an external employer. But you can add to your skills and understanding with college work projects, guest speakers from industry and employability skills.
This includes everything else you can do at college, from tutorials to sports teams and includes our fantastic Challenge programmes as well as lots of other clubs and fun activities.
If you don’t already have a grade 4 / C in English or Maths you will continue to work towards these. For learners with grade 4/C there is an opportunity to stretch your abilities further with Core Maths or AAME.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way of getting valuable qualifications and experience whilst building your confidence…and giving yourself great prospects for your future.
Anyone aged 16 or over can become an Apprentice – you will spend time training in the workplace (usually 4 days per week) and time in college (usually 1 day per week) to gain your qualifications, with Apprenticeships typically taking 1 to 4 years to complete.
The employer will pay you a minimum wage of £3.50 per hour* for those aged 16-18 and for anyone aged 19 or over the National Minimum Wage appropriate to the age applies.
Apprenticeships are available at 3 levels – Intermediate, Advanced and Higher, and you can find your own employer or come to us to help you. Our fantastic links with employers means that new vacancies are added to our website each week – visit www.stokecollege.ac.uk/apprenticeships-vacancies for the latest list.
All Apprenticeships include:
» Assessment of your competence in the workplace
» Knowledge and technical skills (usually taught in college)
» Maths, English and ICT » Employment rights and responsibilities » Personal learning and thinking skills

My Apprenticeship has not only taught me about work skills, but life skills too. I started studying A Levels at my local school, but it wasn’t the route for me. I saw the Apprenticeship vacancy at Port Vale FC through Stoke on Trent College and couldn’t believe it when I was successful. As well as learning coaching skills, I feel a huge sense of achievement from encouraging youngsters to get the best out of the sport they love.
