I MISSION STATEMENT A society is strengthened through the education of its youth. To assure that tomorrow’s adults become the most positive contributing members of our community, it is the mission of the Fort Madison High School Band to use

4music in bringing together the diversity of student backgrounds and personalities for those who choose band in their education. They will develop a deep willingness for the promotion of music in our society by higher level thinking skills such as creating, imagining, evaluating, perceiving, and comprehending. Through various musical experiences, students will receive an educational and life-long appreciation of many different styles of music, opportunities for developing personal character through mental and physical disciplines, and a sense of pride and accomplishment in a job well-done. II MEMBERSHIP Membership in the Fort Madison High School Band program shall be open to any student in the Fort Madison Community School District in grades 9-12 without regard to race, creed, color, sex, or religious preference. Generally, students without music and/or band experience will not be allowed to join the band program until the successful completion of a music competency exam has been administered by the director. However, a student selected for the Color Guard may acquire their appointment into the band program without prior musical training. III SCHOLASTIC REQUIREMENTS It should be recognized that academic success is the main intent of any school. Therefore, no one shall take part in any contest or performance who is not in compliance with the policies of the Fort Madison Community School District. A student must remain academically eligible in order to attend any band performance! IV ENSEMBLES Marching Band All students wishing to be in the Fort Madison High School Band will be considered for this group on an individual basis. Students with prior history of missing practices, performances, and competitions, or demonstrating a lack of commitment and pride for the group, will be considered for alternative placement to equipment duty and will not receive a spot in the competitive performance, rather it will be limited to half-time and parade performances. Prior musical training is very important, but is not an absolute requirement. Although instrumental experience is a distinct advantage, a person does not need to know how to play an instrument to be selected for the Color Guard (auditions held in April or May). Wind Ensemble The Wind Ensemble is the top performing organization that we offer to our band students. Members of this ensemble must be in 10 – 12 grades. This ensemble performs a wide variety of repertoire and tends to be on the higher end of the difficulty scale. This ensemble works towards perfecting every little musical nuance so our audience and band members alike can have a complete aesthetic musical experience. Concert Band This band contains our freshman band students and performs grade 3 & 4 level works.

5 Jazz Band Jazz Band I meets at 7:15 AM, Monday Wednesday, & Friday, Jazz Band II meets at 7:15 AM, Tuesday & Thursday. Students interested in Jazz Band must be aware of the early time commitment of rehearsals BEFORE signing up and/or auditioning for Jazz Band. Depending upon student interest, other non-credit ensembles may be formed which meet before or after the school day. Membership in all Jazz Ensembles will be by audition and director approval. Only students who are enrolled in Wind Ensemble or Concert Band are eligible to participate in Jazz Band unless special director approval is acquired. V ATTENDANCE Attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances! Because missing even one rehearsal diminishes the band’s ability to perform at it’s highest level, we must expect every student, at every rehearsal, every week! Likewise, an absence in a performance severely hinders the entire band! In the event of an unavoidable sickness or emergency, the student must communicate to a band director with a parent-signed note or email. Absences not properly notified will be considered unexcused. If a student has an unexcused absence from a rehearsal, the student will be grounded from performances for one week, will receive a “zero” for a grade, and will be removed from the Primary drill (if applicable). If a student has a second unexcused absence, that could be grounds for removal from the band program. An unexcused absence from a performance will result in removal from the band program! WORK SCHEDULES, DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENTS, AND DRIVER’S ED ARE NOT VIABLE REASONS FOR MISSING A REHEARSAL OR A PERFORMANCE!!! Use the Band Calendar and the Rehearsal Schedule and plan accordingly! Because it is imperative that all rehearsals start promptly at the designated time, tardies will be addressed by directors through our Discipline plan (see Section XI). Refer to the rehearsal schedule below to plan your week with top priority given to your band commitment! VI DAILY REHEARSAL SCHEDULE Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 Term 4

In addition to the regular class time, Marching Band will also rehearse once a week

after school during the fall: August 25th ---------------------- Band Rehearsal ------------------------7 – 9 PM September 8th ------------------ Band Rehearsal ------------------------7 – 9 PM September 13th----------------- Band Rehearsal ------------------------8 – Noon September 18th----------------- Band Rehearsal ------------------------7 – 9 PM September 29th----------------- Band Rehearsal ------------------------7 – 9 PM October 9th ---------------------- Band Rehearsal ------------------------7 – 9 PM VII CONDUCT As a member of the Ft. Madison Band Program, you are a part of one of the school’s most important organizations. Therefore, the success of the band will depend on the loyalty, cooperation, and dedication of each and every member. In keeping these rules, you are meeting an obligation that will help make our band successful. Each band member needs to adhere to the following: 1. Conduct which does not display respect for the band staff will not be tolerated. Foul language,

raised voices, inappropriate gestures, and physical contact will be reasons for referral to the administration and could be grounds for immediate removal from the program.

2. Any behavior that causes a disruption or interferes with the education process will not be tolerated.

3. Possession, sale, or use of narcotics, drugs, alcohol, tobacco or other controlled substances will be reason for referral to the administration and could be grounds for immediate removal from the program.

4. Possession of any weapon, dangerous instrument or object that could be reasonably considered a weapon, will be reason for referral to the administration and could be grounds for immediate removal from the program.

5. Destruction, defacement, and other acts of vandalism of school equipment or building will be reason for referral to the administration and could be grounds for immediate removal from the program.

6. Any type of discrimination will result in immediate disciplinary action. This also includes the use of vulgar and derogatory language.

7. Any type of public display of affection (PDA) will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.

8. Courtesy and respect is to be shown at all times to all directors, chaperones, parents, fellow students, and individuals from other schools!

Page 7: Ft. Madison High Schoolhsfm.sharpschool.net/UserFiles/Servers/Server_49735/File... · Membership in the Fort Madison High School Band program shall be open to any student in the Fort

7 VIII REHEARSAL ETIQUETTE 1. Students are to be quiet (No talking), attentive, and focused whether in large, small, indoor, or

outdoor ensembles. 2. Students need to be on time, in place, and ready with all materials (horn, music, reeds, oil,

sticks, etc.) 3. Cell phones should be off or on silent. Any phone out in rehearsal, whether inside or outside,

will be taken up and turned in to the office as instructed in the FMHS student handbook. IX EQUIPMENT & FACILITIES Facilities will be maintained at the highest level of cleanliness and organization as possible. Proper steps will be taken to ensure the district’s role in facility preparedness, but the student’s and staff’s role in facility upkeep is paramount. Each band member needs to adhere to the following:

1. Band members are to keep the Band Room clean and neat. If you see trash on

the floor, pick it up and throw it away. 2. Keep the chairs and music stands in place. If you see a stand or chair turned

over, pick it up and reset it. 3. Because instruments are very expensive, treat all instruments with tremendous

respect. Do not touch any instrument that does not belong to you. 4. Any time your instrument is accessed, the horn case needs to be placed back in the locker and door shut. 5. At all times your locker door needs to be closed with lock

attached and snapped shut. 6. Band lockers are for instruments and music only. Keep them

clean. You may leave some books and, during marching season, some clothing (such as shoes, extra shirt, etc.) in your locker; however, it is imperative that your locker stay orderly, clean, uncluttered, and always functional, first and foremost, for your instrument and music. Non-compliance with this will result in loss of locker privileges! Do not abuse this very important responsibility.

7. Equipment that is removed from the band room without authorization will be treated as stolen property and appropriate action will be taken.

9. Unless otherwise directed, the band room is open to band students to come in and practice whenever a director is on campus. Non-band students should not be in the band room at any time without director approval!

10. We want students to feel at home in our band room; however, the director’s offices are a place to conduct business and students should knock and wait for permission to enter.

11. No food, drink (other than water), candy, or gum is allowed in the band room! Students needing to eat before a game or rehearsal need to do so in the cafeteria or outside. Always remember to clean up after yourself!

8 X FOOTBALL GAMES A detailed itinerary will be made available prior to all performances. For all games, the band will meet in role-check at the designated areas at the specified time. Attendance will be taken at the time indicated on the itinerary. At that time, the section leaders will conduct a brief inspection of the uniform and materials. All uniform parts must be present at inspection. The appearance that the band makes both on and off the football field is very important! Make the

band’s part of the game an outstanding one. The band, the student body, and the cheerleaders reflect the image of Ft. Madison High School. Many people outside of Ft. Madison will see the Bloodhound Band only ONCE. The impression they receive has a great deal to do with the spirit, pride, and reputation of the band. Let’s make our image a favorable one! Parents will assist the directors in chaperoning the stands and since they are placed in complete charge, and they are to be obeyed. Let your conduct be a credit to you, your parents, the band, our school and our city. REMEMBER TO BE

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN at all times! Stand Rules:

1. EACH PERSON is responsible for his or her equipment at all times. 2. STAY SEATED. DO NOT MOVE ABOUT OR BETWEEN SECTIONS DURING THE GAME 3. File up & down the stands in an orderly manner. Do not crowd or push. 4. Get your instrument and get in your position quickly and quietly. 5. BE PROPERLY UNIFORMED AT ALL TIMES!

Jackets on and buttoned at all times unless instructed otherwise by a director. During cold weather you may bring coats and blankets.

6. Do not bring unauthorized refreshments into the stands during the game. You will be given water while in the stands. NO EATING or DRINKING (other than water) is allowed while in uniform or in the stands.

7. Only play when instructed to by a director! The drumline will be allowed to play cadences and stand “jams” as long as they are done well and in good taste. All band members must have the Fight Song memorized. Students should be ready to play at a moment’s notice.

8. During the game, stay focused and tuned into the Directors and Drum Majors. 9. No one but band personnel is allowed in the band section. 10. Rest room passes during the game will be issued by band directors or chaperones 11. Stay 100% focused during performances: Our performance starts when we enter the stadium and ends

when we are completely out of uniform. 12. Everyone must wear the CURRENT YEAR band T-shirt under their uniform. 13. Meet at the band room at the designated time (usually 6:00 pm for home games). 14. You are encouraged to have spirit and cheer with the cheerleaders, but avoid making rude comments.

Treat everyone with respect and politeness.

9 XI PERSONAL APPEARANCE The FMCSD dress code will be strictly adhered to at all times since the personal appearance of the individual is important to the uniformity of our band. Since the focus is on the group, not the individual, the following guidelines will be expected while in uniform:

1. No jewelry such as rings, earrings, body piercing, necklaces, etc. The only exceptions will be senior rings and religious necklaces worn under the clothing. If a student needs to remove jewelry, section leaders will provide a safe storage which will be secured by a director. 2. All band members (male & female) will wear their hair off the collar. Hair may be pulled back in ponytails or in a French braid. All hair must be worn inside the hat for performances. 3. Make up for female band members must be as follows while in uniform: * Light foundation, eyelash mascara, light blush may be worn. * Eye shadow, eyeliner, lipstick and nail polish may not be worn. 4. Color Guard make-up will be determined by the director. 5. All make-up must be on before inspection. At no time may make-up be applied in the stands. 6. Again, when the uniform is designated to be worn, it must be buttoned, snapped, & zipped.

XII TRIPS

The Ft. Madison High School Band participates in trips to music contests/festivals each year along with a MajorMajor trip every other year. This year the band will be participating in the Disney’s Magic Music Days in Orlando, Florida. The FMCSD Student Code of Conduct is always in effect on such events. In addition, a student must meet all eligibility requirements set by the district and the directors while also meeting the monetary obligations for the trip if not funded by district. All students will travel as a group via school-approved transportation and will be expected to return on the same transportation. Students may make other arrangements for the returning trip under the following circumstances:

1. If the student desires to ride home with parents, a written parental request must be submitted to the band

director prior to leaving on the event. 2. A student may be released to no one other than a legal parent or guardian! 3. The student’s parent/guardian must come to a director at the bus after the event and personally “sign out” their child before leaving so we can be sure that the student’s transportation needs are met. Again, we can not release students to ANYONE OTHER THAN THEIR PARENT!

XX BAND BOOSTERS The Ft. Madison High School Band Booster Club is a vital support organization that serves the band in many ways. Boosters help on trips by chaperoning on buses, loading and unloading equipment trailers, providing water, moving equipment from place to place, and generally assisting in whatever is needed. Money raised by the FMHS Band Booster Club supplements the school budget in providing instruments, supplies, scholarships, and other special needs the band may have. Much of the success of the Ft. Madison High School Band is a direct result of the tireless work of the Booster Club. We encourage all parents to be involved by joining the club, attending the meetings, and helping with projects. Meetings are the second Thursday of every month starting at 7:00 pm in the High School band room. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. XXI ENTRY FEES All contest entry fees in which the full band is entering will be paid by the band. However, any student failing to complete his or her performance will be expected to reimburse the band for the full amount of their entry into that competition. The students portion is figured by the number of band members divided by the cost of the entry fee for the entire group. Any individual wishing to participate in an individual solo contest or honor band audition, is responsible for paying their own entry fees. See student band fees section below. XXI STUDENT BAND FEES

XXII WHAT IT TAKES TO BE # 1 Vince Lombardi

• “You’ve got to pay the price!

• Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all-the-time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right

once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

• There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay and I don’t ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do and to win and to win and to win!

• Every time a football player goes out to play his trade he’s got to play from the ground up---from the soles of his

feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That’s O.K. You’ve got to be smart to be No. 1 in any business. But more important, you’ve got to play with your heart---with every fiber of your body. If you’re lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he’s never going to come off the field second.

• Running a football team is no different from running any other kind of organization---an army, a political party, a

business (High School BAND Program). The principles are the same. The object is to win---to beat the other guy. Maybe it sounds hard or cruel. I don’t think it is.

• It’s a reality of life that men a competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That’s

why they’re there---to compete. They know the rules and the objective is to win---fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules---but to win.

• And in truth, I’ve never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn’t appreciate

the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for, needs, discipline and the harsh reality of head-to-head combat.

• I don’t say these things because I believe in the ‘brute’ nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be

combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But, I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour---his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear---is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle---victorious!”

Do you not know that those who run in a race, run all, but only one receives the prize? Therefore, run in such a way that you may win!
