Learner Group:

The student population is birth to age three, identified as having developmental delays. With visual and auditory supports provided through the viewing of a video and listening to a sing-a-long, the teacher will create interactive learning experiences for the child to associate with play objects, such as food toys. The primary goal is to support the development of cooperative play skills. By incorporating English language arts and literacy, approaches to communication, cognition and knowledge of the world, and approaches to learning, the teacher will be simultaneously targeting the above listed instructional standards.

Goals:

This lesson must be personalized in order to effectively target each student’s documented Individualized Family Service Plan goals.

Objectives:

1. The student will identify and label 5 fruits (apples, pears, plums, strawberries, and oranges) as requested by the teacher during the interactive storybook video, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle with 80% accuracy.

2. The student will count to 5 by counting the 5 fruits presented during the interactive storybook video with 80% accuracy.

3. The student will model and label the verb “eat” during the reading, the sing-a-long, and cooperative play activity in 8 out of 10 trials.

4. The student will verbalize 4 of the 5 target words “apples,” “pears,” “plums,” “strawberries,” and “oranges” when asked, “What is this?”

5. The student will engage in cooperative play by moving play objects (foods) appropriately and using two word verbalizations, such as, “eat (fruit)” to demonstrate communicative intent independently on 3 occasions.

Assessment:

Take a student language sample during the cooperative play activity. The language sample may be taken in the form of a written list, an audio recording, or a video recording. Ideally, a language sample is comprised of at least 200 utterances. The language sample will be analyzed to identify the student’s mean length of spontaneous speech utterances. Additionally, a structural analysis will be conducted in order to assess the student’s development of language structures.
