Sub sector: Fruit garden 1. Situation: Each and every household have homestead, but the productivity is very low. Most of the homestead is densely planted with timber tree and have small pond or ditch. Farmers are not intensively using the homestead land for increase income. It is observed that some farmers are planting fruit tree in their homestead land get good return. The major type of fruit is jujube, papaya, lemon, guava etc. It found that market linkage for selling of the produces is poor in the remote villages. 1. Situation:Each and every household have homestead, but the productivity is very low. Farmers are not getting good quality fruit seedling and technical knowhow for establishment of homestead fruit garden.

During discussion we found that farmer is interested for increasing income by using homestead and fruit garden could be the best option.

2. Objectives for working in the sub sector: Increase homestead productivity Farmer’s income

3. What has been done and impact so far:The RED team facilitated the following activities with the farmers for establishment of homestead garden with quick returned fruit seedling. Meanwhile one seedling producer is established in the village level and selling fruit seedling to the farmer. Activities # of events # of framer attended Outcome Linkage workshop with producer, buyers, input seller

4. Future strategy for reaching the target beneficiaries (High importance)The team set the target for established homestead based fruit garden in the community by ensuring the supply of quality seedling and market linkage. Farmer Upazilas Crops # of seedling Yield 500 Noakhali: Boyer

Av. 20 seedling per garden

increase homestead productivity

It is expected that each farmer will plant 20 fruit seedling in their homestead and increase income. The additional income will Tk. 1,000,000 (Av one farmer will earn Tk 2000 per year from 20 tree)

Specific activities to support the strategies: Provide direct assistance to the farmer (training, linkages, demonstrations, market visit) for

establish of mini orchard with quick growing fruits Linking with DAE, horticulture farm and private seedling raiser Facilitated group marketing

5. Scale up strategy (secondary importance) Develop fruit seedling raiser

6. Constraints matrix:Areas Constraints InterventionsInput market Lack of available of seedling Promotion of better quality sapling linking

with DAE and local seedling producer Farm production Lack of awareness and technical know

how about garden management of the garden

Improve technical knowledge about the improve management of the mini orchard

Output market Lack of market linkages Link farmers’ groups with the big buyers or market

Main intervention areas are available of quick growing fruit seedling (Kul, Payapa, lemon), management of the garden and market linkages
