FROSTS CARS LIMITED

Welcome to the first Frosts sponsored Brighton National Speed Trials of the newmillennium, the start of our second millennium of support for the biggest event ofits kind in the motoring calendar!

This is the Trials' 64th staging since its inauguration in 1905. And every year itseems to grow in stature and popularity.

The period between Speed Trials also seems to pass by more quickly every year. That's partly because life at Frosts is so busy these days, there hardly seems timeto catch breath. With new registrations now taking place every six months, it hasmade the whole car buying process much simpler for our customers - whilst at thesame time keeping our staff extremely busy!

The range of vehicles now available through Frosts is now more comprehensive andversatile than ever. This year alone, Vauxhall have added a new generation ofOmegas, Vectras and Corsas; there's also the stylish Astra Coupe and ourtriumphant entry into the MPV market, thanks to the diminutive Agila.

At Chrysler, the new price efficient Neon and the art deco PT Cruiser have beensensationally received. From Lotus we now have the Elise Motorsport derivative, the Exige. And Frosts Jaguar customers are putting down deposits in anticipationof the futuristic F Type.

The Year 2000 has also seen the launch of the Frosts web site (www.frosts4cars).We went live a few months ago and already customer feedback has been verypositive. Whilst we are constantly evaluating and updating information to providethe best possible service, the site is clearly appreciated amongst the car buyingpublic. We receive literally thousands of visits every day. We wanted to provide youwith the opportunity to source, precisely, the exact vehicle of your choice from thesite. We also wanted to keep you right up-to-date with our comprehensive stockof used cars. All this, we have achieved. But we won't be wresting on our laurels. As always, there is so much more that we want to do.

For now, though, we hope you have a fantastic day out at the Speed Trials and welook forward to seeing you at a Frosts showroom soon.

Brighton Speed TrialsIt isn't likely that many spectators (or entrants for that matter) will remember much aboutour inaugural event, a distant 95 years ago.

The first Speed Trials took place during the 1905 Brighton Motor Week, for which BrightonCorporation laid tarmac on what is now called Madeira Drive. In those days, tarmac wassomething of a novelty!

However, their action didn't go down at all well with a group of ratepayers who took theCorporation to court for spending £3000 on laying the new surface. The ratepayers lost onappeal but at least had the satisfaction of seeing the event postponed until after the1914/18 War. True, a motorcycle sprint was held in 1913, but that was organised byStreatham & District Motor Cycle Club and was not part of the Speed Trials run under RAC rules.

The event restarted officially in 1923 when, under the auspices of the Brighton & HoveMotor Cycle and Light Car Club, a series of "Head to Head" races were staged.

The Club had every intention of making this an annual event. But after the 1924 Trials, apolice ban on motor racing on public roads put paid to future racing.

However, by the late twenties a split developed between the Motor Cycle and Light CarClubs, one of which became the Brighton & Hove Motor Club (who still run the event to thisday). In 1932 they established that Madeira Drive was not actually a public road becauseit was owned by Brighton Corporation - and so the Speed Trials escaped the police ban.The rest, as they say, is history.

The length of the course has altered over the years; in 1905, for instance, the event wasstaged over four days with different distances being used. However, from 1923 andincluding every Trials held up to the Second World War, everyone raced over a standing-start half mile. After the War, the course was extended to a standing start kilometre, anarrangement which lasted until 1968. Then, following the cancelled event of 1969, theSpeed Trials chopped and changed between a quarter mile, half mile and kilometre format. However, from 1993, with ever-increasing speeds, it reverted to a quarter mile standingstart which is how it remains to this day.

Interestingly, the record time of 8.9 secs by a car over the quarter mile has, in fact, stoodsince 1993. Will it be beaten this year?

Once again we are greatly indebted to Frosts Cars Limited, who for many years now havebeen major sponsors of the event. Their support is appreciated both in financial terms, butalso through all the enthusiastic assistance they provide each year in the build-up to theevent. Without doubt their backing helps tremendously in making the Speed Trials such anhistoric event in the national motoring calendar.

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC RACINGThe Vintage and Historic Class introduced in 1985 has always produced an exciting and varied entry of interestingcars that have made motor racinq history.

Large capacity cars tend to dominate the entry and are likely to provide the outright class winner. Well knownVSCC driver David Baldock will try for another win for the well prepared supercharged 2 litre Alta. Andrew Day withthe very powerful supercharged 8 litre Bentley and long time Bentley exponent Bob Burrell in the Bentley Roycewill both be providing serious opposition. Ben Eastick with the 3.4 litre D Type Jaguar will be well in contention andcould pull something out of the hat with a surprise result.

As well as the outright class winner, we have a race within a race; the VSCC Handicap.

Tom Delaney drives the supercharged Lea Francis with which he led the Irish Grand Prix in 1931. Today he sharesthe car with his son Geoffrey. Clair Fumell has her trusty Austin Ulster model, and David Venables has his concourswinning Frazer Nash. This year for the first time in the class we have two Bugatli T35 B Grand Prix cars, both inBugatti french racing blue and very close in performance. Mike Marshall and I will be having our own private duelwith a rather good botlle of wine for the winner. However, it should not be overlooked that the big Bentleys and theAlia are also eligible for the handicap and it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that a driver could be goinghome with both the awards.

BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS 2000 - The Motor Cycles

For too many years that I can recall it has been my pleasure to write up the notes for themotorcycles within your programme, usually it consists of details regarding the bikes andthe riders, mostly these are the 'Hardy annuals" out for their yearly "fix'. This year instead Iwish to bring to your notice those who work in the background for a solid twelve monthsto get this particular show on the road, and to my knowledge never really are recognisedfor the very hard work that they put in year on year. they are those who beaver away on themasses of paperwork that is required from all the authorities who are involved; the RAC.M.S.A, the A.C.U, the local Council, Police, Medical Services. All who have their ownrequirements to be satisfied, any mistake in answering their requirements would put ablock upon the event going ahead. Then on the day itself, following up their logisticalproblems of safety fencing, patrolling etc. and this is where the unpaid volunteers step in,the Marshals; marshals who have given up time prior to the event to be briefed as to theirduties, and will also be de-briefed following the day. All of this ongoing throughout the

preceding months guided and controlled by the tight band of Brighton and Hove Motor Clubmembers who control and guide the management of the event as a whole, backed up by theirwives, families, girl friend, who put up with their partners time spent sorting the whole thing out, amassive team, always seeking ways and means of providing the ongoing series and improving theevent within its traditions, coming up with ideas to increase the excitement, such as now involvingthe bikes within the fastest six runs that close the meeting, a match race that has enlivenedeverybody involved, from the also rans to the top contenders, this has proved to be the best crowdpleaser for many a year.Over the years the fact that the event is always the second Saturday in September puts us at themercy of British weather, luck seems to be with us, for we have been blessed with dry tracks. Weare at the mercy of unavoidable delays, but quick thinking and decision making progresses theevent along to provide that entertainment we so much enjoy. So, thank you Brighton and HoveMotor Club stalwarts, Tony Johnstone, John Bidwell, their committee, the Marshals, all who areinvolved in making this annual visit to Brighton such an enjoyable one, and all our thanks to you allfor our invitation every year to run our bikes in this world famed event. We must not forget to thankthe sponsors of the day Messrs Frosts of Brighton who in the most practical way put much backinto motor sport. But most of all to you the spectators, around the paddock and up on the 'Shelf"who give us your enthusiastic support year on year, long may it continue. Mayall have a safejourney home.
