Port Authority Executive DirectorPatrickFoye hasordered theagencyspolice chief to investigate the role anofficerwithreportedtiesto Gov. ChrisChristie may have played in Septem-bers GeorgeWashington Bridge laneclosuresin FortLee,a sourceclosetothe police department said yesterday.

The probe will focus on reportsthatPortAuthority Police Lt.ThomasChipMichaels,a15-yeardepartmentveteranand memberof the GWBunit,

chauffeured David Wildsteinthroughclogged Fort Lee streets on Sept. 9,the first of four days of closures, saidthe source, who was not authorizedto speak publiclyon thematter.

Wildstein is the former Christie-backed Port Authority official whoordered the closure of two of threelocal-access lanes from Fort Lee tothe bridge.

The executive directorhas orderedthechief to reviewMichaels actions, thesourcesaid.

Foye gave the order to Chief

Louis Koumoutsos in response to anMSNBC report that Michaels droveWildstein around the borough.MSNBC also reported that Michaelsis from Livingston, where Wildsteinand Christie also grew up, and thatMichaels coached Christies son in ayouth hockeyleague.

Michaels could not be reached forcommentyesterday.

The source said Foye also orderedKoumoutsos to look into assertionsby drivers that officers told themthat if they were unhappy about traf-fic, they should complain to the FortLeemayor. The source said Foye alsowas reacting to a story in The Recordyesterday, which quoted complaintsand said the joint legislative com-mittee would examine that as well.

It is alleged that the closures were inretaliation for Fort Lee Mayor MarkSokolichs failure to endorse Chris-ties re-election bid.

The co-chairman of the commit-tee, Assemblyman John Wisniewski(D-Middlesex), said yesterday thatMichaels role in the closure and hislinks to the governor must be lookedat.

JAKARTA, Indonesia Sec-retaryof State JohnKerry, call-ingclimate changeperhapstheworldsmost fearsomeweaponof mass destruction, urged de-veloping nations yesterday todo moreto cutgreenhouse-gasemissions as he derided cli-mate-change skeptics at homeand blamed big companies forhijackingthe debate.

Kerry painted a picture oflooming drought and famine, massive floods and deadlystorms as a result of globalwarming, and he urged ordi-nary citizens in developing

nations to speak out on the is-sue and demand more fromtheir political leaders. He la-beled those who denied the

evidence of climate change asshoddy scientists and extremeideologues.

He was addressing a groupof students and governmentofficials at an American cul-tural center in the Indonesiancapital, Jakarta, in a countryand region that he said were

on the front lines of climatechange and some of the mostvulnerable to the effects ofglobal warming. Its not anexaggeration tosay thattheen-tire way of life here is at risk,he said.

Global efforts to counterclimate change have longfoundered on a sharp dividebetween developed and devel-oping nations. Although devel-oping nations now account formore than half of greenhouse-gas emissions, they have beenreluctant to commit to mean-ingful cuts as they seek a pathto Western industrializationand prosperity. Theyargue theWest caused the problem and

    three-car garageand a bigoutdoorpool,itsvalued at nearly $800,000, recordsshow.

But its not quite roomy enough for NewarkArchbishop JohnJ. Myers.

Myers, who has used the Franklin Townshiphouse as a weekend residence since the arch-diocese purchased it in2002, isbuilding a three-story, 3,000-square-foot addition in anticipationof his retirement in two years, The Star-Ledgerfound. He will then move in full time, a spokes-

    manfor the archbishop said.

The new wing, now just a wood frame, willinclude an indoor exercise pool, a hot tub, threefireplaces, a library and an elevator, accordingto blueprints andpermitsfiled withthe FranklinTownship buildingdepartment.

Theprice tag, therecordsshow, will bea mini-mum of a half-million dollars, a figure that doesnot include architectural costs, furnishings andlandscaping.

Construction is progressing as Myers asksthe archdioceses more than 1.3 million RomanCatholics to open their wallets for the arch-bishops annual appeal, a fundraising effortthat supports an array of initiatives, includingreligious education, the trainingof future priestsandfeedingthe poor.
