We are delighted to welcome our guest speaker today Dr Peter Vardy who is already well known to our A Level RS group as one of Ms Young’s personal heroes!
Peter began his career as a chartered accountant, becoming a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Marketing. He left the world
of commerce to join the ranks of academia, although he maintains an especially keen interest in Business Ethics. His philosophical interests are wide ranging and include the nature of God, the relationship between science and religion, the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard and globalisation and its consequences for living a fulfilled human life. His focus is on providing a spiritual perspective in a secular world and on evaluating ‘Good and Bad Religion’ in the world today. He served as Vice-Principal to Heythrop College (1999-2011) lecturing in the Philosophy of Religion.
Peter is perhaps known most for his conferences for 14 – 18 year olds in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore & Hong Kong related to issues in philosophy, religion, ethics and the theory of knowledge. His ability to communicate complex philosophical ideas with clarity and humour is renowned throughout the world of Religious Studies. He also runs Inset training for teachers and schools.
Dr Vardy served on the academic board of Leo Baeck College (which trains rabbis in the Jewish Reformed Tradition in Britain) and has worked closely with The Coexist Foundation since 2007. He has also worked as a member of the Methodist Schools’ Committee, a body which co-ordinates the work of Methodist schools in the United Kingdom and has run training for other educational bodies such as the Woodard Corporation and North Tyneside LEA. He has been the keynote lecturer at a number of confer-ences in the field of education run by the International Baccalaureate Organisation, HMC, AHISA, GSA and UNHRC and gave the St Wilfrid Lecture at Ripon Cathedral in November 2012. His books include Ethics Matters (2012), God Matters ( 2013), The Puzzle of Sex (2009), What is Truth? (2003) and Good and Bad Religion (2010).
