What is love? Many have attempted to define it with words, pictures, music, but unfortunately its never truly been

described successfully these ways. Can it be described theseways? I dont think so. Love is not meant to be described.

Its meant to be felt. Shared. Love Untitled is this idea in thepicture form. Love in its untitled or indescribable form. The

    mystery of love.

Definition Man is gifted with reason; he is life being aware of

itself Aware of himself as a separate entity, short life span

helplessness before the forces of nature and of socie The experience of separateness arouses anxiety The deepest need of man is the need to overcome hi

separateness, to leave the prison of his aloneness HOW??Overcome separateness, achieve unionfind at-onement

    2. Union based in Conformity (customs, beliefs, practices)

a union in which theindividual self disappears to a large extent, and where the aim is tobelong to the herd

By trying desperately toconform, we sometimes willeven give up our lives in order to remain a part of ourgroup. But this is only pretend identity, an identity wetake from others.

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    12/30

When we need to hide, wehide in our mass culture instead. When I get dressed in the morning, there are so

many decisions But I only need to look at what you arewearing, and my frustrations disappear. Or I can look at television, which, like a horoscope, will tell me quickly aeffectively what to do. If I look like, talk like, think like, like... everyone else in my society, thenI disappear into thecrowd, and I don't need to acknowledge myfreedom or takeresponsibility.

When people are free to do as they please, they usually imitate each other.

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    13/30

The person is like asocial chameleon: He takes onthe coloring of his surroundings. Since he looks like a

million other people, he no longer feels alone. Heisn't alone, perhaps, but he's not himself either. Heexperiences a split between his genuine feelings andthe colors he shows the world.

When conformity to the herd is the norm, it takesoutstanding bravery to remain an individual

    3. Creative Activity person unites himself with his material, which

represents the world outside of himself. in all types of creative work the worker and hisobject become one, man unites himself with theworld in the process of creation; however, suchunity is not interpersonal.

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    15/30

The unity achieved inproductive work is not

interpersonal;the unity achieved in orgiastic fusion is transitory;the unity achieved by conformity is only pseudo-unity.Hence, they are only partialanswers. The full answer lies in the

achievement ofinterpersonal union , offusion with another person,inLOVE.

    4. Love interpersonal union, of fusion with another

person problem: fusion can be achieved in different ways

Immature formI.Symbiotic union (biological & psychic)

Symbiosis is the relationship two organisms have whocannot live without each other. example is the case whethe parent "swallows" the child, so that the child'spersonality is merely a reflection of the parent's wishes

II.Psychic symbiotic union a. passive form =masochism: One is to submit to thepower of others, becoming passive and compliant b. active form =sadism: Others look to eliminate theirisolation by dominating others

Either way, these are not satisfying: Yourseparateness is not overcome.

    Immature form

    from the movie Basic Instinct

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    20/30

Mature form Love isunion under the condition of preservingones integrity, ones individuality. Love is anactive power in man; a power that

breaks through the walls which separate manfrom his fellowmen, which unites him withothers

Love makes himovercome the sense of isolation andseparateness, yet it permits him to behimself, to retain his integrity

    Elements of Love

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    23/30

    1. Knowledge it does not stay at theperiphery, but penetrates to the core the only way of full knowledge lies in the act

of love: this act transcends thought, ittranscends words = it is the daring plunge intothe experience of union with the other

only if I know a human being objectively, canI know him in his ultimate essence, in the actof love

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    24/30

    2. Respect (respicere = to look at) the abilityto see a person as he is, to be aware of his uniqindividuality

the concern that the other person should grow and

unfold as he is; absence of exploitation respect exists only on the basis of freedom: l mour

est lenf nt de l libert love is the child offreedom)

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    25/30

    3. Responsibility a voluntary act; myresponse to the needs, expressed orunexpressed, of another human being

to be responsible means to be able and readyto respond

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    26/30

    4. Care love is the active concern for thelife and the growth of that which we love the essence of love is to labor for something

    and to make something grow

e.g. mothers love for her child

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    27/30

Care, responsibility, respect and knowledge aremutually interdependent. They are a syndrome of

attitudes which are to be found in the mature person

"We are only capable ofknowing, and caring forthe other if we are also

    capable of understanding,caring, and knowing

    ourselves"

  • 8/11/2019 FROMM the Theory of Love

    ability to produce love inothers."

In the morning of my lifeI shall look to the sunriseAt the moment in my life when the world is newAnd the Blessing I shall ask is that God shall grant meTo be Brave and Strong and TrueAnd to fill the world with love my whole life through.

Chorus: And to fill the world with love (x3)My whole life through.

At the noontime of my lifeI shall look at the sunshineAt the moment in my life when the sky is blueAnd the Blessing I shall ask shall remain unchangingTo be Brave and Strong and TrueAnd to fill the world with love my whole life through. (rep chorus)

In the evening of my lifeI shall look to the sunsetAt the moment in my life when my days are fewAnd the Question I shall ask only you can answerWas I Brave and Strong and True?Did I fill the world with love my whole life through? (rep chorus)
