Attendance

Unauthorised Absences— The Telethon Institute for Child Health Research released the Attendance and Educational Outcomes: Every Day Counts paper in 2013. A key finding of the paper was that unauthorised absences are more strongly associated with achievement than authorised absences. Unauthorised absences had a significantly stronger association with achievement than authorised absences, and this was seen consistently in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Even small amounts of unauthorised absence from school were associated with substantial falls in average NAPLAN test scores. The paper also advises that reducing unauthorised absences should be the key focus of attendance strategies.

Falcon Primary School is currently addressing this issue to reduce the number of unauthorised absences across the school.

How can you help?

Let your child’s classroom teacher know if your child is away via the student diary pages 120 & 121.

Let your child’s classroom teacher know verbally.

SMS the school on 0437 159 606 (student

name and reason). This is the preferred method for advising the school if your child is going to be absent.

Respond to the text SMS message from the school regarding non attendance. These are sent out at 9:45am and 1.45 daily to families who have a child absent from school without a reason.

Return absence from school letters that are sent out weekly to families with a child/ren with unauthorised absences to class teachers with a reason.

Story Dogs When children read to a

dog, the outcomes are

amazing! It is a non-

judgemental setting, the

children's focus

improves, their literacy

skills increase and their

confidence soars. The

accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its

magic and helps children relax, open up, try harder and

have fun while reading to a friendly, calm dog.

This program has been introduced to the Year 2

students at Falcon PS this year and is proving a very

successful initiative through the motivation and

confidence it has already developed in our children.

To support this initiative, students are invited to

dress up in ORANGE on Friday 4 May (Term 2 Week

1) and donate a gold coin.

By donating with a gold coin on the day, cheque, direct

debit or credit card, you will help Story Dogs continue

helping children learn to read across Australia. For
