continued report from Susan Lee

YEAR 4 CAMP THE GRAMPIANSThe Year 4 children had a fabulous time at camp last week. They enjoyed their bush walks, hut building, bush cooking, archery, orienteering, viewing the wildlife and plants and seeing Clematis Falls. The Grampians is a beautiful place to visit. The children learnt about the traditional people, viewed Dreamtime stories, hut building, learnt about the didgeridoo, boomerang throwing and bush tucker tasting. Thank you to the staff who attended the camp to care for the children. It is a full-on task and time away from their families. We thank the teachers, Mrs. Calleja, Mrs. Cook, Mr. Trott, Mr. Bell, Mrs. Lever, Ms. Saliba, Mrs. Cuthbertson Mrs. Wilson, Ms. Gough, Mrs. Harris, Ms. Busby, Mr Mihaljevic for their hard work and commitment.

HATSA reminder again that despite the weather forecast on the day hats must be worn outside from now until May. The UV rays can be high from September onwards and we all need to protect our skin. Please check your child has their hat as they may not be able to participate in outside activities or play with their friends during breaks. Names on the hat helps us to return them when they are misplaced.

LEAVING SEABROOKAs part of our planning for 2020 we need to know the number of students at each year level who will not be returning after the December/January holidays. Please let us know if you are leaving Seabrook Primary School so we can plan accordingly. Forms are available in this edition of the newsletter, from the front office, on the Seabrook website and on Xuno in the news tab.

GRADE 5 LEAVING FOR SOVEREIGN HILLThe grade 5 cohort left in the bright sunshine for their 3-day camp this morning held at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat. The children will be involved a variety of experiences centering around the history of Victoria’s gold rush era in and around Ballarat. We hope the weather is kind and look forward to their accounts of the experiences had.

BEING AT SCHOOL ON TIMEIt is very important for students to learn about punctuality and being at school on time. The Seabrook PS school day starts at 8:50 am. and this is the time most classes

mark the roll and discuss how the day is going to be organized. For children who come late it can mean they may be disrupted missing out on these important rituals and processes. We know it can be difficult some days coping with the traffic but we need to help our children understand that time management is an important skill and being on time is a life-long skill to develop early. Thank you for your support.

SEABROOK SPORTS POLO TOPThe top is not part of the official school uniform but may be worn by children in all year levels on the day of PE, interschool sport or on Fridays. The navy polo top is for children in years 3-6 to wear over the sports top. Children in years P-2 may wear

their normal maroon/burgundy woollen jumpers.

THE YEAR 6 EXHIBITION IS NEXT WEEKWe hope families can attend our Year 6 PYP Exhibition on Wednesday 18 September. The children are eagerly preparing the presentations and are very excited to share their learnings and understandings about their individual inquiries covering a range of topics. Every class in the school is invited to visit the exhibition during the school day and parents from any year level are invited for the evening presentation on Wednesday evening from 6:30pm – 8pm. We are looking all looking forward to seeing what the children present this year.

KINDER TO SCHOOL TRANSITION BBQ Tomorrow afternoon we are holding our annual new Prep games and BBQ. We look forward to hosting all our preps who are enroled for the 2020 school year. We hope the children will make some new friends and the parents have the opportunity to develop relationships while their children enjoy some engaging activities prepared by our staff. It is an exciting time preparing for starting school next February.

SUSTAINABILITY AT SEABROOK We thank our parents for their support of this important initiative by helping their children manage less waste from wrappings. We are working hard to help children understand the need to reduce waste and therefore preserve valuable resources used in their production. Looking after our environment and our planet is one of the concepts of the PYP. We all have a responsibility to look after the world we live in and help our children take action to protect it for the future.

Have a great week ahead. Sue & Staff

ALL monies and chocolates are due this Friday, 13th of September.

Many thanks for your support.

2019 NAPLAN Results

Most results from Naplan are now available. Individual reports were sent home with the year 3 and 5 students last week.

Seabrook students performed well above the state in all areas.

We are very proud of the students. We value the superb teaching and family support which help the students achieve so well.

NAPLAN is only one measure. The outstanding portfolios, confidence children show in discussing goals and growth and the glowing feedback we receive from people running camps, excursions, guest speakers and school visitors gives us considerable evidence that we are developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people. Our students are active, compassionate people who are helping to create a better and more peaceful world.

Well done to all!

Why it’s important We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.

If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.

Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.

Getting in early Attendance patterns are established early – a child regularly missing days in kindergarten or in the early years of school will often continue to miss classes in the later years, and receive lower test scores than their classmates. It’s vital that students go to school every day – even in the early years of primary school.

What we can do The main reasons for absence are:

Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital that they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and setting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.

It's vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term if it can be avoided.

“Day off” – Think twice before letting your child have a “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates – every day counts.

Truancy – This is when students choose not to go to school without their parent’s permission. There can be many reasons for truancy. The best way to address this is for schools and parents to work together.

If for any reason your child must miss school, there are things you can do with your school to ensure they don’t fall behind:

• Speak with your classroom teacher andfind out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

• Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible.

Openly communicating with your child's school about all absences is a good way to prevent attendance issues being escalated to a School Attendance Officer. A School Attendance Officer is a Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Regional Director who has authority to follow up attendance issues. Attendance issues that are escalated can lead to an Infringement Notice.

If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

For more information and resources to help address attendance issues, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/school/parents/behaviour/Pages/studentattendance.aspx

Prep Living Things Day

The preps had the time of their life last Wednesday, celebrating Living Things Day for our Living Things inquiry. They dressed up as pandas, fruits, trees, flowers, butterflies and bees and many other living things.

The preps rotated around other prep classrooms, participating in garden fun filled activities such as painting pots, making a greenhouse, drawing vegetable gardens, making stained glass garden windows and finding bugs through a magnifying glass.

Lunch was the highlight of the day. We made yummy salad sandwiches filled with lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot, carrots, capsicum, and cucumbers. Many were risk w- takers as they tasted alfalfa sprouts for the very first time!

The prep students and teachers had a fantastic day celebrating our Living Things inquiry Day!

Recycling Update Council is implementing interim recyclables drop offs for Hobsons Bay residents weekly on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm.

The first recycling drop off took place on Saturday 10 August at the Hobsons Bay City Council Operations Centre, Sugar Gum Drive in Altona and will occur every Saturday until further notice.

The drop offs follow the temporary closure of SKM, Council’s recycling contractors, which has resulted in recycling collected through Council’s household collection service going to

landfill. It is an interim measure while a longer term recycling option is resolved.

Council has put arrangements in place for Hobsons Bay’s recyclables collected at the Saturday drop offs to be recycled and not go to landfill. For more information and frequently asked questions simply visit Council’s website.

Parent volunteers needed for school banking if you have some spare time on Thursday mornings (approximately 1.5 hours), we need your help with the counting and processing of the school banking. Please email us if you are interested in volunteering as all volunteers need to firstly submit a School Banking Co-ordinator Registration form with the Commonwealth Bank. Working with Children check is also required for volunteers.

Regular saving is an important habit to get into, whether you are saving a little or a lot.
