FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Once again I have fallen behind in writing to you my dear Friends in our Lord Je-sus. The staff of our two parishes have been saddened by the recent deaths in the parishes. But we also want to congratulate Josh and Kaitlyn Schmitz on their re-cent marriage. My buddy Buster is limping more and more and doesn’t want to walk very far. He gets this plaintive look on his face saying, “Not so fast and not so far”. Our COVID regulations are really burdensome for many people as we all strug-gle with less communication with neighbors and friends. But I urge people to take the regulations seriously as we are now seeing an uptick in cases nationwide. I have to congratulate Shirley and Joe Miller. She sent me a picture of their tomato patch and it is extraordinary. My patch is producing but some of the plants really look scraggly. So the winner of this years competition is Me. Sorry Shirley and Joe. (actually they win by a landslide). Just remember that 2021 is another year. Fr. Jerome Tupa, OSB, Pastor

GOSPEL REFLECTION—AUGUST 16 READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 16

The theme for this weeks’ readings is faith. In the first reading, God promises mercy to those who do what is right. Even if they fall, he is merciful. In Paul’s letter we hear that God’s call to us cannot be revoked even when we sin. In the Gospel Jesus at first refuses the request of the Cannanite woman and even insults her. But her faith is strong, and Jesus gives her what she requests. This week Jesus asks us to look at the quality of our faith. Do we really believe that God is merciful, and that God cares for us? Do we really believe that God does answer our prayers? It is the gift of faith that helps us to recognize the answers as they come from God, even if it is not what we asked for. Jesus know what is best for us even when we don’t realize it. This week pray for an increase in faith. S. Betty Larson, OSB, Pastoral Ministry

GOSPEL REFLECTION—AUGUST 23 READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 23 In the Gospel today Jesus first asks his apostles who other people think He is. Their responses include, John the Baptist, Elijah or one of the prophets. But the real question to the apostles is WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM? Peter gives the response: You are the Christ the Son of the Living God.” Jesus then acknowledges the fact that His Father has revealed this to Peter. And with that affirmation, Jesus makes Peter the head of the church. Today, Jesus poses this question to you and to me:” WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?” How would you answer that question? Certainly one answer would be God, another might be Savior, and a third, He was man. The reality of the humanity of Jesus as He walked with his disciples and as He is present daily in our lives, may cause us to relate to Him in less formal and more human ways. Who is the Jesus you pray to at times when: • You are afraid (Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane) • You are sick (Jesus the healer of the sick and crippled) • You have lost a loved one (Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus) • You find it difficult to pray (Jesus going to the

mountain to be quiet and pray) • You struggle to accept another person ( Jesus story of

the man on the road to Jericho) • You want to be forgiven (Jesus story of the Prodigal

Son) Jesus, you are the Son of God! Help us to recognize You in the events of our daily life. Give us courage to walk our daily journey with You. Amen S. Betty Larson, OSB, Pastoral Ministry

•To sign-up, visit the parish website or call Amber at 320.363.7505 x120

•Drop contributions in the parish office drop box STATUE RESTORATION Due to the gracious gift from an anonymous donor, we are able to clean, repair, and paint the two statues on the front of the school. Since 1926, St Joseph has held the child Jesus and the guardian angel has watched over the people of St Joseph; all the while being exposed to the elements and weathered many storms, but despite there heavy construction, they have not been able to fend off all the damage that mother nature and the occasional kick ball have caused. During the week of August 17th thru August 21st, Linda Mader and her crew will be replacing some missing features and giving them several coats of fresh paint, allowing them to watch over us for many decades to come. Thank you.

JOETOWN CHRISTMAS TREASURES SALE After much thought the decision has bee made to cancel the 2020 Joetown Christmas Sale. The good news is that we will continue to collect treasures to make the 2021 Sale the best ever. We have already in storage wonderful treasures and we have room to store many more. Please bring items to Heritage Hall or call 363-4588 to have items picked up at your home. Thanks for supporting this fun parish activity. PARISH COOKBOOK This could be a fun way to celebrate the heritage of Saint Joseph’s parish. If you have not already done so, please submit your favorite recipes. There are recipe submission forms in the entry way of the parish office, or you can email Marian ([email protected]) to have a form sent to you via email. Your submissions can be dropped off at or sent to the parish office. The deadline for submitting recipes is August 31st. Thank you! FAITH FORMATION FOR 2020-2021 Please watch for a mailing for those in grades 1-11 regarding the 2020-2021. The mailing will include a letter and format for the coming faith formation year, a registration form, and a session calendar for grades 1-11. THANK YOU! With sincere ‘THANKS’ to all who donated to the Catholic Relief Services Collection and to the Rice Bowl program in this challenging time. CRS operates on a grassroots level in over 100 countries around the world and donations like yours continue to make this possible. This is the primary outreach of the Catholic Church in the United States to assist with the global needs of our brothers and sisters in faith. You also contribute toward local hunger relief with 25% of the Rice Bowl funds being distributed through our diocese to organizations like area food shelves which are seeing increasing needs during this time. On behalf of those who benefit from your kindness and generosity, our heartfelt gratitude! 6PM MASS AT SACRED HEART CHAPEL Due to protocols set for programs at CSB/SJU, including Campus Ministry Masses, the Sunday night Masses at the College of Saint Benedict Sacred Heart Chapel will not be open to the public. This change is planned until further notice. It is the hope of CSB Campus Ministry that, by the New Year, we will be able to open Masses to all who would like to join. Stay tuned.
