CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEWe are deeply saddened to record that John Pitchford has recently passed away in Cape Town. I was looking forward to again meeting up with John and Val at the Fairest Cape Tour, as we have done in recent years, but this time John was seriously ill in hospital.

A VMC Life Member, John had moved to the Cape many years back and formed a branch of the VMC there. This, of course, later became the Cape Vintage Motorcycle Club. John was also organizer of many of the Fairest Cape events in the Nineties.

We send our deepest sympathies to Val and to their sons, Harold, David and Ralph, and their families.

Yours,

MICHAEL MS

October Club Night

We had apologies from the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Les Sim and the evening got off to a start with the usual announcements and business matters.

The undersigned took the meeting in the absence of Mike and Brandon and mentioned that Dorian Radue had called from Australia and the bad news was that she probably would not make it to the DJ next year. Otherwise she was doing well and sent greetings.

The meeting was also reminded that the DJ regulations were available on a number of web sites and that entrants should get these in as soon as possible.

Two gentlemen from Q8 OILS then gave an interesting presentation on the background to their company and a discussion followed on the suitability of their products for older machines such as ours. They indicated that if there was sufficient demand they could even prepare special products for club members with a view to producing something suitable.

This was followed by Rob Pattison-Emms who showed us his very good looking Norton. He amused the gathering by telling us what he didn’t like about the machine more than dwelling on its merits! The bike was a Norton Model 18. Sadly, it is not eligible for the DJ, being just too new, but it would have been a great DJ bike. It nevertheless fired up on the first kick and the meeting was suitably impressed.

The head count was 54 and as always everyone enjoyed the social aspects of the occasion.

The 2012 Commemorative D-J

A reminder that the 2012 DJ will take place over 9th to 10th March and the Entry Documentation is now available on the usual Websites. A lot have entries are already in and riders should note that the Closing Date for entries is Friday, January 13th. Further details can be had from Pierre Cronje on 072 513 9432.

Philip Gordon is looking for someone who is able to take his Sunbeam down to Durban for the event. Anyone who can help Philip out is asked to call him on 082 442 0829.

Remember that the CMC Pre-DJ run on 12th February will give you a good chance to exercise your DJ machine and your rallying skills. The Entry Documentation for this run is already on the CMC website and we suggest you put your entry in soon.

2012 Club Calendar

The club’s pictorial calendar for 2012 has been printed, it’s looking good and we congratulate Les Sim on another job well done. Copies are presently being mailed to all members whose membership subscriptions are up to date.

If you do not receive your copy, please check that your subs have been paid before calling us.

SAVVA INSURANCE

We have been concerned that so few members are taking advantage of the excellent vehicle insurance arrangements available under the SAVVA Scheme.

One of the problems is that there is no clear mechanism for obtaining premium quotations on one’s vehicles which may be in varying types of use and condition. Brandon Madgwick is now looking into this and will soon find some solution. We suggest, in the meantime, that you study the existing details of the scheme which are on the SAVVA website.

Restoration Notes:

Over a period of time, the club library has been given several books of motorcycle road tests and which are reprints of tests done in The Motor Cycle, Motor Cycling or the Titch Allen series. We have now had them bound into one volume and this contains tests of 90 different machines.

If you want to borrow the book to read about the test of a machine that you own, or read something of its specification or history, please call Roly Tilman on 082 377 4303.

Here is a list of the first part of the book’s index. We will print more next month.

This month – way, way back.1901. The main achievements of Swedish industrialist, Alfred Nobel, were the invention of the Percussion Detonator in 1863 and of Dynamite in 1866. When he died on December 10th 1901, he left his enormous fortune to be awarded to “those who during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind”.

In 1906, the first of these Nobel Prizes were awarded and they were in the subjects of Chemistry, Physics, Literature, Medicine and Peace. In 1969, Economics was added as the sixth subject.

1901. The first Transatlantic broadcast was reported on December 12, by Guglielmo Marconi after he had picked up a Morse Code radio signal in St. Johns, Newfoundland, that had been transmitted from a power station in Cornwall, 2100 miles away. For this and other discoveries in radio, Marconi was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909.

1903. The first ever flight by a heavier-than-air machine took place at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17th. This was achieved by the brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, after three years of experimenting with models, gliders and kites. The craft was fitted with a petrol engine of the Wrights’ own design and the first of their four flights that day lasted just 12 seconds. They went on to achieve many more advances in aviation and in 1909 the U S Government accepted the Wright flying machine for army use.

1911. On December 14th, Roald Amundsen and four others of their expedition were the first to reach the South Pole, where they hoisted the Norwegian flag. After two days of surveying to confirm the exact location of the South Pole, they trekked back to their base at Whale Bay. The polar trip, using dog-pulled sledges, took 99 days and covered 2250km.

1913. On December 1st, Henry Ford introduced the assembly line concept to his factory which cut the assembly time of a Model T from 12.5 to 1.5

hours. In the first year this raised production from 82 000 to 189 000 cars and by 1923, Ford was producing two million Model Ts per year.

The monotony of the assembly line work led to increased absenteeism and staff turnover. Over the next two years, Henry Ford counteracted these problems by introducing a 40-hour work week and the $5 daily wage.

Who?When?Where? In answer to last month’s poser, this photo was taken at the 1934 German Grand Prix which was held that year at Hohenstein in Saxony. The thoughtful gents are Norton men, Joe Craig and Jimmie Guthrie, who are seeing the BMW telescopic front forks for the first time. Note also the BMWs double-decker fuel tank.

9

Page 10: FROM THE PANTHER’S LAIR START 2011 DECE…  · Web viewA monthly publication of The Vintage Motorcycle Club. Johannesburg, South Africa. Volume 24. No 12 December, 2011. CHAIRMAN’S

This photo shows the rider, Agsten, taking instructions from chief mechanic Sepp Hoff. After being very fast in practice, Agsten over-revved the machine at the start and was an early retirement.

In the 500cc race, Walter Rusk rode for Norton in place of Jimmie Guthrie who was injured. Rusk made fastest lap but crashed out on the fourth lap. There were only five finishers from 28 starters and the winner was Otto Ley on a DKW.

The 250cc and 350cc classes had been run concurrently with British wins by Tyrell Smith (Rudge) and Jimmy Simpson (Norton). This led to the extraordinary spectacle of thousands of men, women and children, standing with right arms raised in salute while a recording of “God save the King” was played for a full three minutes!

We said that the first person to answer our Who?When?Where?

question would have his name up in lights – and here he is:
