Kindergarten Registration 2019-20

From the Office: Hello everyone,

We had an awesome turnout at the Kindergarten Information Night on January 24th. It was cold, but there was still a great turnout. We enjoyed sharing information and speak-ing with parents of our soon to be new students.

Speaking of cold, please keep in mind that temperatures are often far below freezing. Alt-hough students will be kept in on days where the cold poses a risk, please always send students with full winter gear including winter boots, ski-pants, jacket, gloves or mittens, scarf or neck warmer and toque.

Our local chapter of Canadian Parents for French are hosting a Bilingual Bop Dance here on Thursday January 31st from 6:30-8:00pm. All families are invited whether you have children in the French Immersion program or not!

We are encouraging students to use more French in their day, whether they are French Immersion or not. We invite parents to encourage students in the home as well. It can be as simple as asking students how they are, “Comment ça va” or saying hello “Bonjour”!

We encourage parents to reference the calendar to keep informed about Western and provincial events that effect the school schedule.

Home and School Advisory Council Update Hello Maple Leaf families! Hopefully you're all doing well surviving the cold weather and with any luck finding some fun this January! This February we're looking forward to celebrating the staff in our school! Some of you may be helping out providing snacks or special treats and we say a big THANK YOU for your help. If you did not have the chance to get involved in that way, please feel free to email your teachers and tell them how you value their efforts and the many ways they care for our kids! And from the H&SAC THANK YOU to our teachers, EAs, admin-istration, and other support staff as we go forward into February, know you are appreciated!:) Our next meet-ing will be on Monday February 4th at 7:00 in the staff room. We hope to see you there! Your friends at Maple Leaf H&SAC

Assemblies: To deal with our/an increasing issue with space and time in the gym during assemblies we have divided assemblies by grades for the rest of this year. Grade 3&4 and 1&2 will have assemblies together, Kindergarten may be invited to attend as well.

In the case where parents/guardians are attending an assembly and want their children to see a younger or older sibling present, arrangements can be made with teachers to sign out specific students for the assembly. Parents/Guardians are expected to contact their child’s teacher and inform them they would like to take their student out of class for the assembly period and must sign that student out at the office.

On assembly day, students attending with parents/guardians will be called down to the office to meet their parent/guardian. Parents/Guardians are asked to wait for their child at the office and are not to meet their child at their classroom or in the gym.

Please feel free to provide us feedback on this system as we move forward. It is very important to us that we both meet the belonging needs of our learning community but also the safety needs at the same time.

Parking: Mr. Keith is reminding you all that the staff parking lot directly in front of our school on 12th Street is not

meant for student drop-off or pick-up, either in the morning, at noon, or at the end of the day. Please avoid using this

parking lot. If you bring your children to school, or pick them up at the end of the day, please park in the visitor park-

ing lot at the southwest corner of our school, or park on 12th Street or 10th Street. The loop on 11th Street is meant for

“kiss and go”, as in drop-off or pick-up only. You can also park in the parking lot at the corner of 11th Street and Thorn-

hill, and use our patrols to cross Thornhill St. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to talk to our ad-

ministrators. Thanks for your help in keeping our students safe!

Reminders to Parents :

Locking School Doors During Class Hours/Late to school

As a safety precaution all school doors with the exception of the main doors (12th Street) will be locked shortly af-ter 9:00 a.m. All parents/visitors to the school are asked to go to the office for assistance in carrying out their business in the school.

Lates: With the weather being so cold lately we wanted to remind parents that if your child is late to school, they need to check into the office to let us know they have arrived and to remind you that doors are locked and need to access the front/main doors to get in to the school.

Kindergarten - Mrs. McGill— Our theme for the month is Snowmen. We love to read stories, do math activities, and write about Snowmen. Kindergar-ten McGill has also been doing a lot of investigating. We have become letter and word detectives and we’re getting quite good at . We are looking forward to the start of our Treasure boxes next month.

Grade 1 - Mrs. Strange - We have been working on learning all about our senses in science. It has been fun get-ting to taste, smell, touch, listen and see all sorts of new things in class. Mrs. Strange even tried to trick our senses with giving us potato pieces instead of apple pieces! We have also been work-ing on our reading and writing skills every day. We are improving so much and definitely see ourselves as readers and writers now. In math, we have been learning about addition and using the counting on strategy (holding the big number in our head and counting on from it; 6+2=8). We are hopeful for warmer weather in February.

Grade 1 F.I.—Mme Reddig—Grade 1 Reddig began the New Year discussing what we wanted to learn in 2019. The students shared what was important to them to get better at in school and at home. We have been learning about the Zones of Regulation with Mme McGill. We have been practicing strate-gies on how to calm down when we are upset or too silly. In Math we are Mak-ing 10 in a variety of ways and learning

how to subtract using Part-Part-Whole activities. We continue to practice counting to and from 100 in French; building, translating and extending pat-terns and estimating quantities to 15. In French we learned about the body parts of a snowman and wrote about it! This linked well with the 5 senses and which body part is responsi-ble for which sense. Stay warm! Next month is Festival du Voyageur!

Grade 2 F.I. - Mme DeJaegher - A new year has brought new books and new discoveries to our classroom. This month, we started reading The World According to Humphrey and are enjoy-ing all of Humphrey the hamster's ad-ventures. We also started reading the Napoleon series in French. Napoleon is helping us practice both our retelling skills and our French writing. In scienc-es humaines, we've been learning about a different community in Canada: Moncton. We've learned there are a lot of really cool things in Moncton that we would like to visit such as Hopewell Rocks and a really big water park!

Grade 2 - Mrs. Crockett Nicholls- It may be cold outside but our class is

on fire with writing. We are trying to add ‘gem words or phrases’ to our writ-

ing to make it sound rich. We are learn-ing to revise our writing by making one

or two changes to make it sound even better. We have been working on Place Value activities (tens and ones) to help us do Front End Addition. Using part,

part, whole can help us answer problem solving questions. We can make our own questions too. Did you know that communities in Canada can be very dif-

ferent? We will choose a community and compare it to Morden. We have made our plans for wind devices and will be building them and testing right

away.

Grade 3 - Mrs. Duffield—Mrs. Duf-field’s grade three students have been so busy! Students have been researching and reporting about the amazing work their foundations do (at the local, pro-vincial, national, and international lev-els). A BIG shout out of thanks to Mrs. A. Dueck for all of her excellent help/guidance. Students are also gathering lots of data in math and science - using magnets and our ‘melting’ snowman. Coming soon to a Maple Leaf hall bulle-tin board - completed graphs with all of our findings! Keep warm!

Grade 4—Mrs. Warkentin—Our class has been very busy! Right before Christmas break, our class decided to contribute to the community by making cookies and delivering them to 10 busi-nesses around town, each with a per-sonalized thank you note. Now that we are back, we are busy learning about Canada’s north, taking a special interest in the northern lights, storytelling, and how they survived in the harsh winters.

Help Support an Evening of Elegance

The 10th Evening of Elegance will be held on Tuesday, February 12th. It will run from 4:30p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the

basement of the Alliance Church, accessible through the back. Caring & Sharing and Morden Collegiate have been working

together to provide an evening where graduates can enjoy choosing a dress, suit or accessories for their big day!

This is made possible by volunteers and support from the community through donations and time helping with

this event that is so graciously held at the Alliance Church. To those of you who wish to contribute, feel free to

donate items (new or gently used) drop offs are accepted at The Alliance Church, to Betty Peters at EMMS or

Rosemary Zahn & Angie Muggridge at Morden Collegiate Institute. We anticipate an evening where students,

parents & friends can delight in the atmosphere, dainties and company as we prepare for the upcoming Gradua-

tion Day!

Vision Screening Eye health is an important aspect of your son/daughter’s overall health. School performance is closely linked to

visual abilities and according to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, 80 per cent of all learning is visual.

Unfortunately, many of the students who experience visual difficulties often do not realize it and therefore do not convey this problem to their parents or teachers. In order to provide your child with the best foundations for learning, the Canadian Association of Optometrists recom-mends that every child receives his or her first complete eye examination before the age of three and once a year after that.

A complete eye examination includes an eye chart test, which will detect any obvious visu-al problems, and most importantly, a detailed evaluation of the visual system, which will reveal other problems including eye coordination, perception, colour blindness, and near-point focusing. These serious conditions, which can be successfully treated if detected early, cannot be diagnosed simply by reading an eye chart. This means that a problem can exist even if your child sees well.

Seeing an optometrist once a year is the best way to ensure your child has all the right tools to succeed in school and is an important part to instilling good health habits that will last a lifetime. These eye exams are FREE to all children under 19 years of age and can start as early as 6 months of age.

Spread the Kindness Project: In social studies, the Grade 3’s continue to spread acts of kindness and extend their learning through identifying how organiza-tions support communities all around the world. Furthermore, students from 3Z, 3D & 3G will be working on a project that will support local organizations such as the Katie Cares Foundation. Starting from February 4th - 20th, students will be doing a “supply drive.” We are kindly asking for contributions of unopened packaged items that will be donated to the Katie Cares Foundation. Boxes will be provided at the entrance of the school for any items contributed such as:

Granola Bars,

Individually wrapped small chocolate bars,

Individually wrapped crackers/cookies

Baking supplies, such as: sugar, flour, chocolate chips etc.

Box tissue or bathroom toilet paper

Serviettes

Cheez Whiz, assorted flavors of jam, peanut butter, and honey

Keurig coffee pods, regular coffee pods, teas-assorted

NEW Teddy Bears or Beanie Babies

Crossword puzzle/word search books

Crayons/Markers

Tea Towels

Juice boxes/bottled water P.S: Keep a look out for posters in the school - thank you in advance for your support in the project!

I Love to Read I Love to Read February and March 2019

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” again- I Love to Read - February and March 2019!!

This year there will be a STEM theme for I Love to Read month. This means:

S= Science T= Technology E=Engineering M= Mathematics

During February and March classes will be reading a variety of books from the library that connect to the STEM theme. For example if a class reads a version of The Three Little Pigs, the students will then use their STEM skills to design a house for the pigs OR if a class reads Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the response will be to create a new chair.

We will be reading, designing, creating and THINKING!!

The month will also consist of some favorites that have happened other years such as D.E.A.R.(Drop Everything and Read) and guest readers.

Book Swaps will take place. This means your children can bring books they may have outgrown to trade for books

that others have brought in to swap. Here is the schedule:

All Grade 4 classes : February 7 at 12:30 in the library

All Grade 3 classes: February 15 at 12:30 in the library

All Grade 2 classes: February 20 at 12:30 in the library

All Grade 1 classes: February 26 at 12:30 in the library

All Kindergarten classes: February 27- classes will be called when it is their turn during the day

Save the date for Cuddle Up and Read night on February 26 from 6-7 P.M. Come in your comfy PJ’s

and enjoy reading with your family and friends.

I Love to Read month is every month!!!

There will be lots of fun with reading happening during Feb-ruary so let’s all get involved. Maybe at home they could learn to play a new game from reading about it, or how to make something from reading instructions. Try cooking or baking a treat from reading recipes. Have some laughs read-ing jokes or riddles. The possibilities are endless.

It is a great time to sit with your child on the cozy couch and share some reading time together. Do lots of talking about the story because when you talk about it that helps them understand it better; using different words when talking builds their vocabulary and it is a great way to spend time with your child.

Try to commit 15 minutes each day to reading with your child. They will benefit from it more than you know.

Kids have amazing ideas so try to do some writing with them and see what adventure they may take you on. Perhaps they could make their own recipe for something yummy, create their own game and instructions of how to play, or make up some riddles or jokes to put a smile on someone’s face. Focus on getting those ideas written down and maybe add in some pictures.

Reading and writing is a life-long skill and can be used in everyday life activities.

Remember that being involved with your child and having fun with reading should happen every month not just during February!!
