Golden West College Breaks Ground and Cuts Ribbons Exciting changes are happening on GWC’s campus this month. The demolition of the old library building a few months ago is making way for the brand new Student Services One-Stop Center. To kick-off construction of the new building scheduled for this summer, the President’s office hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Wednesday, April 20, at the GWC Bookstore area. Many thanks to Board President David A. Grant, Board Vice President Mary Hornbuckle, and Board Clerk Lorraine Prinsky for attending to support this important Measure M benchmark. A special thanks to Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services and co-chair of Measure M Oversight Committee Andy Dunn, GWC President Wes Bryan and Vice President of Student Life and Administrative Services, Janet Houlihan for your hard work and diligence toward making this vision a reality. The celebration continued at the brand new Community Education and Public Safety building with a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening party. The Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting Delegates and many civic officials were on hand for the official opening of the building. An open house, building tour and reception took place afterwards in the Community Education / Public Safety area.

OCC Coast Colleague of the Year On Thursday, April 21, I joined the Orange Coast College Faculty and Staff to honor Classified Members and Faculty Members who were nominees and awardees of ‘Outstanding Coast Colleague of the Year’. Far too often, we fall short of recognizing our peers for the valiant efforts they make toward student success. GWC Peace Conference

There are several ways to celebrate Earth Day, but one event I found to be most fitting, was the Golden West College 10th Annual Peace Conference. The theme, “Regenerative Peace: Sustaining Our Work, Communities, Environment and Selves in Service.”, was executed through a series of moving speakers, resourceful exhibitors, no waste disposal areas, and engaging networking with concerned students, staff, faculty and community members in a standing room only student center. Speakers posed questions to the audience such as:

How does climate change affect our lives?

Can there be a balance among the economy, the environment and human rights?

How can we rebuild a culture of trust, empathy and compassion? Overall, the conference was a success and GWC staff and students should be proud of the decade of promoting peace on campus, in the community and throughout the world.

District Office Benefits Update Please take time to read the important updates from the District Benefits Office below on the topics of Chemical/Substance Dependency and the Employee Assistance Program.

Chemical/Substance Dependency: Important Information about Your Benefit Chemical and substance dependency challenges can affect both our private lives and our job

performance. The Coast Community College District offers benefits to help address these challenges. Knowing when, how and where to go to get these benefits makes a big difference in treatment success and in your out-of-pocket cost. Our District’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider, Care Resources, Inc., can help. Not all facilities that advertise chemical/substance dependency treatment are the same. If you are covered under the District’s self-insured PPO, Care Resources coordinates with Anthem Blue Cross to ensure that the facility in which you or your dependents are placed meets the Standard of Care requirements necessary for a successful outcome. Your benefits may be reduced when you self-admit into a facility that is not part of the Anthem Blue Cross network:

- The facility may not meet the Standard of Care requirements for treatment or use qualified staff

- The facility may not accept the Anthem Blue Cross rates and you may be responsible to pay the difference between the rate the facility charges and the amount of the Anthem Blue Cross contract

If you or one of your dependents have a chemical and/or substance dependence challenge, Care Resources may be able to refer you to an appropriate resource. Call their 24-hour Helpline: 1- 800- 635-3616 for information or an appointment. If you are enrolled in Kaiser, contact your primary care provider for assistance. If you are enrolled in United Health Care, call 800-999-9585 for assistance.

Employee Assistance Program Services Available through Care Resources, Inc. 1-800-635-3616 Any of us can have personal challenges. Sometimes it is hard to know where to turn for assistance. The Coast Community College District provides access to confidential, professional counseling services for all active employees and family members through the

Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Care Resources, Inc., our EAP provider, provides confidential, professional counseling services for all active employees and family members. Assistance is offered for martial/family challenges, chemical/substance dependence, depression, stress management, and child/adolescent behavior problems. The District pays for up to 3 sessions every 6 months. Everything discussed in each counseling session is completely confidential: No information is entered in your personnel records, No information is shared with the Coast Community College District without your written consent, No records are kept at the Coast Community College District.

More information about Care Resources and the services they provide are available on the Employees page of the Coast Community College District website, under Benefits Information, Employee Assistance Program.
