Be Respecul – All members of a group, especially its leaders, should exemplify the behavior expected of the group. Our acons speak so much louder than our words. 2. Be Humble – We all come together from different paths through life. Each and every one of us knows something that none of the rest of us do. Each and every one of us is ignorant of something the rest of us take for granted. Armed with sufficient humility, we can all learn the most amazing things from the most unlikely of teachers. 3. Be Careful with Communicaon – One of my favorite thoughts, “conflict is not about winning; it’s about understanding,” is built on the foundaon of effecve communicaon. We have all heard that “loose lips sink ships,” but what we seem less cognizant about is that thoughtless speech and rumormongering will also most certainly sink a Yacht Club. Please be intenonal and thoughul in what we say to each other. 4. Be Prepared – When I was young, someone (I’ve now forgoen who) once told me “the only thing we can control in life, is our own preparaon.” I must admit, that as my life has become increasingly busy this year, I have fallen in this regard. Too many mes I’ve had to rush from one meeng to another with insufficient preparaon. I thank my Board and the members for tolerang this in me, but I also encourage our new leaders to do their best to avoid this hecc pace and the resulng frenec energy it brings to our business. 5. Be Knowledgeable – So much of our business and our interacons with others requires a deep knowledge of our Yacht Club and our community. This is not something that we can just Google; it takes me and hard work to become aware of the facts and subtlees that make things happen. All too oſten, we outsource this work to others and forge paths in ignorance. I have been imperfect in this, and I do appreciate the mes that members have called me on it and forced me to reexamine important underlying assumpons. We are all beer off if we take the me to become knowledgeable and understand that the learning process is never complete. I wish our new leaders the very best and it is my sincere hope that they all have an enjoyable and fulfilling me on the Board. I’d also like to thank all the amazing members and staff who have helped me through this year. For the kind words of encouragement of the staff commodores; for the insighul and selfless sharing of experse of my fellow board members; for the paence and understand- ing of the staff; and for the very real support of so many of our members in so many different ways; thank you, thank you, thank you. Finally, I would like most of all to thank my daughters and my amazing wife Sarah, for so paently sharing me with the .Yacht Club this year, for all their sincere words of encouragement, and for lending me the occasional shoulder to cry on. Congratulations to our Officers and Directors elected for 2018!Commodore Larry BoothVice Commodore Richard BoltzRear Commodore Pat BowersSecretary TJ KitchenTreasurer Terri DaleDirector Nancy AllisonDirector Dan Demon

Along with our continuing directors Jacqueline Ramos and Alan Zada, they make up our Yacht Club’s next leadership team. I hope all our members will join me in thanking them for agreeing to serve in this capacity. May they continue the tradition of hard work and selfless service in guiding our Yacht Club and inspiring our members and staff.

As I ponder joining the ranks of our Yacht Club’s Staff Commodores and look back over my year of service as Commodore, I’d like to leave our new leaders with the five concepts I asked my 2017 Board to embody at the beginning of our term. Indeed, I think these would be five easy points for all our members to keep in mind.

1. Be Respectful – All members of a group, especially its leaders, should exemplify the behavior expected of the group. Our actions speak so much louder than our words.

2. Be Humble – We all come together from different paths through life. Each and every one of us knows something that none of the rest of us do. Each and every one of us is ignorant of something the rest of us take for granted. Armed with sufficient humility, we can all learn the most amazing things from the most unlikely of teachers.

3. Be Careful with Communication – One of my favorite thoughts, “conflict is not about winning; it’s about understanding,” is built on the foundation of effective communication. We have all heard that “loose lips sink ships,” but what we seem less cognizant about is that thoughtless speech and rumormongering will also most certainly sink a Yacht Club. Please be intentional and thoughtful in what we say to each other.

4. Be Prepared – When I was young, someone (I’ve now forgotten who) once told me “the only thing we can control in life, is our own preparation.” I must admit, that as my life has become increasingly busy this year, I have fallen in this regard. Too many times I’ve had to rush from one meeting to another with insufficient preparation. I thank my Board and the members for tolerating this in me, but I also encourage our new leaders to do their best to avoid this hectic pace and the resulting frenetic energy it brings to our business.

5. Be Knowledgeable – So much of our business and our interactions with others requires a deep knowledge of our Yacht Club and our community. This is not something that we can just Google; it takes time and hard work to become aware of the facts and subtleties that make things happen. All too often, we outsource this work to others and forge paths in ignorance. I have been imperfect in this, and I do appreciate the times that members have called me on it and forced me to reexamine important underlying assumptions. We are all better off if we take the time to become knowledgeable and understand that the learning process is never complete.

I wish our new leaders the very best and it is my sincere hope that they all have an enjoyable and fulfilling time on the Board.

I’d also like to thank all the amazing members and staff who have helped me through this year. For the kind words of encouragement of the staff commodores; for the insightful and selfless sharing of expertise of my fellow board members; for the patience and understand-ing of the staff; and for the very real support of so many of our members in so many different ways; thank you, thank you, thank you.

Finally, I would like most of all to thank my daughters and my amazing wife Sarah, for so patiently sharing me with the .Yacht Club this year, for all their sincere words of encouragement, and for lending me the occasional shoulder to cry on.

Thank you,

Nick Grebe, (soon to be Jr. Staff) Commodore

BYC 40th Anniversary By Staff Commodore Christine Machado

Who knew turning 40 could be so fabulous!   With well over 100 Members in attendance, the BYC celebrated 40 years in style.    A very warm thank you to everyone who attended and shared in the evening.  You came and partied all night long.   The night was special because of all of you.   And of course, we missed those who were unable to attend.  Please know you were in our thoughts.

The evening would not have been possible without the assistance of Members Susan and Joe Garske, Sharon and Jim McPherson, Ross and Ken Oxman, Nancy Allison, Cheryl Kleinshmidt, Larry Booth and Mark Connors.  Your help and hard work in planning the evening and transforming the downstairs room was invaluable.  Also, a special thank you to the Board of Directors for their support of the evening.

And last but certainly not least, thank you to the entire BYC staff for making the evening such a success.  Shout outs to Joanne, Carlos, Jeannie, Lisa, Fernando, Pedro, Jordan and Cheyenne.  We couldn't have done it without you.

Look out 50 here we come!

It wasn’t a huge turn out, but it was a quality one. Red Hen Grill and Bar in Napa was our 1st stop, Turtle Rock Cafe and Bar, in Lake Berryessa, was our 2nd stop and Preserve in Winters was the 3rd stop. What a perfect day for a drive.

Lunch was served at Turtle Rock, including Burgers, Hotdogs, Black Bean Burgers, Chips, Macaroni salad, and Cookies for dessert. Pete at Turtle Rock always lets us use his grill, which made for a lovely venue.

After Winters we headed back to Benicia Yacht Club where the best hand was Barbra Brooks, winning $310, and runner up was Nikki Askham with a Magnum of delicious Double Lariat Cabernet Sauvignon. The Club also received proceeds of $310 and a good size bar.

Thank you to all that helped: Lori Campbell, Jackie Ramos, Tom and Michelle Konecki, Paul Burrows and the staff for setting up a Tea and Coffee station for the morning registration.

Until next year, keep those motors purring.

POKER RUN 2017

Youth Sailing Award Dinner By Derith Lutz, Photos by Ok Kyong

Youth Sailing hosted it’s Annual Award Dinner during the Membership dinner on October 18th. The dinner itself was wonderful! The roast turkey was really nice and then there was moist ham, mashed potatoes and veggies. The Make your own Sundae Bar was a big hit with the kids AND our adult members! Thank you to Carlos, his staff, Joanne and Pat.

As the children and their families arrived it made me more than happy to see the kids Þnding each other and reuniting on the front deck of the yacht club as they waited for the dinner to begin. Wouldn’t it be a fantastic sight to see families showing up for dinner weekly and having kids looking forward to see their friends from the club? Every year we award the kids with their US Sailing Red Books and some fun awards that they have earned through sailing with us! It is always the event of the year. Our members

and the kids families and friends get the hear about some shanagans that go on during the sailing season. We had a great time and we hope that you all enjoyed the dinner and awards as much as we did.

We will be sailing on most Saturday’s (weather and Participation) and hopefully joining the Frost Bite Sailors as crew this winter.

Here are a few photos from our Award Dinner.

Thank you all for your support.

THE GIBSON GUYS’ GREEK ISLE ADVENTURE

Susan and I moved to Benicia 2 ½ years ago. We also moved our power boat, Bucket List, here to the marina. I had sailed and raced for 35 years and went to the “dark side” about 6 years ago. I missed sailing but that first summer in Benicia I volunteered for Benicia YC Youth Sailing and joined Derith and her Team working with the younger generation and enjoying it immensely. Sailing is in my blood as it is with my son, Fred C, who had a cutter rigged 44 footer that we sailed to Mexico and many other places. He said that we should go to Greece and sail the Isles. This has been on my bucket list for almost 40 years.

We chartered a barebones sailboat out of Athens, Greece in July of this year, provisioned it and sailed the Northern and Middle Cyclades of the Aegean Sea for 7 days. For three days, winds were 25 to 35 knots with gusts up to 44 knots. One never knows how a newly chartered sailboat will handle in this type of weather. It was only a 32 footer but had all the equipment needed including life raft, epirb etc. and handled the massive waves well. We were tethered in at all times. Our wives would never go on something like this. We were probably the smallest sailboat out in this weather.

We did have four beautiful days of calm seas, light winds and great temperatures. We visited seven islands on our circle route anchoring out at four islands (taking the dinghy in to port) and med mooring (stern to dock) at the other three islands. It was an awesome week with my son who is a great sailor and the Greek Isle trip “ticked” off another item on my bucket list.

BYC Birthday’s

November 20144

An apology to any of you whose articles did not make into last months WW. Biography’s for the candi-dates took up a bit of space in the last edition and we could not get all of the stories in, we have included your articles in this edition.

There is a lot of work that goes into getting the Wind Word to you. With each edition that I have done, it has gotten easier, though it is still very time consuming. I am hoping that there is a member out there that would consider coming on board to help with putting out the WW in 2015. I am willing to help you get started! I also encourage having a team to sell advertising to defray the cost of future editions.

With that said, I am concerned that the WW is set to go on line only. It has been a topic of discussion before my taking over for HR as Editor. My concern is for the many members who do not have internet access and those not familiar with the internet itself, that may not search for the BYC website and the Wind Word. Without the phone tree, our only news update to our members is the Scuttlebutt, also an

internet based informational blast.

It would be much more cost effective to post on line only. Would you go on line and read it? Would you miss getting this in the mail and reading it as a print material? Think about that and let the board know your thoughts about the Wind Word’s future.

Because of the low number of readership that we have, membership is just over 200, we are not in competition with other local newspapers and publications as far as advertising goes. I do believe that we could do a better job to gain advertisement with our low costs and help defray the cost of this paper. If you would like to advertise and would like more information, please feel free to contact me or the board about this matter. .... Contact Mike Mathews at 707-745-0610.

I will be accepting LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about the future of the WW and anything else that you would like to discuss.

As I mentioned before, I would love to hear from you. All articles will be considered for print though member and mariner related articles will take priority and preference.
