Dear Parents

We all know the benefits of positive thinking, but it is often easier said than done! Life throws us all sorts of challenges and obstacles and it takes a concerted amount of effort to pull ourselves out of a negative spiral. We tend to think that success is a precursor to long term happiness and yet there is latest research that shows this is not the case. He maintains that people have much higher levels of success if they are experiencing well- being. So how do we increase feelings of well-being? One way is to increase positive emotions in our lives. Focus on your strengths and your passions. He goes on to say that by simplifying our lives by doing things like switching off our cell phones for an hour over dinner time, or getting an extra hour of sleep a night, can lead to increased positive emotions, which in turn lead to improved success in our lives.

At Cedarwood, we focus on being positive with the children, whether it is in the classroom or on the sports-field. Our pupils benefit from being surrounded by positive emotions and we see their confidence grow day by day as their self-esteem soars. From the Sports Desk…

We are now on the home straight and, before long we will truly be on holiday. I am sure that we are all looking forward to missing the early morning traffic. However, before we get there, there are a few housekeeping issues to deal with.

Extra murals will go on until the last week of the term and on the last day, we will be holding our annual Inter-house Athletics meet. While this is a competition for points that will determine which house will win the house trophy at the end of the year, those of you who have attended the day previously will agree that it is also a fantastic fun event. Please find time to come and enjoy the morning with us.

Before the end of the term, you will receive the extra murals schedule for next term. This is so that you can sit down with your child and help them decide which extra murals they will participate in during the second term of 2015. May I humbly suggest that you encourage your child to participate in as many sports at the school as possible, as this helps them to feel that they are part of the school and they are contributing to the good name of the school. In particular, they must try out team sports. There are very few other instances where the child feels and learns a sense of belonging than when they are part of a team. Please encourage them to participate and speak to them seriously about commitment. The ball games for next term will be tennis, soccer and netball. Touch rugby will also be available, but only for Grades 4 to 6.

Last week Tuesday, instead of having cricket practice with the senior boys, we finished off the cricket match against Cedarwood College which had been abandoned the previous Friday due to the rain. We would especially like to commend the boys for their spirited performance. Despite the age and skills gap, they did not give up and played to the last minute. We managed to get several well taken wickets on the one hand and also got to learn that we need to work hard on our batting.

Kind regards Oliver Ngwenya

The PTA Corner Hot Dog Days

On Friday – the PTA is selling hot dogs (R15), lemonade (R5) and popcorn (R5) so you don’t need to pack lunch! We will be selling at first break at 9.30am. We will

The proceeds of this will be used towards aircons for the 3 classrooms that are the warmest in summer and coldest in winter.

Winter Uniforms in Stock

It’s almost the end of term – please pop past our uniform shop to stock up on winter uniforms as soon as you can!

We are open Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7.15am to 8am.

Dear Parents

Cedarwood will be supporting Kitty and Puppy Haven charity group this term. Those of you who have visited this centre know what an amazing job this organization does and we would like to show them our support and gratitude for the hard work they do.

Each teacher will have a collection tin in her class in which children can place their small change from tuck or small donations from their pocket money. Other members of the family are also allowed to make donations should they wish, however, we would like to encourage the children to make their donations from their own money (change from tuck etc.), as opposed to being given money from their parents solely for this purpose, thereby instilling a sense of responsibility to the community.

There will be a prize for the class who raises the most money.

Thanking you in advance for your support The community committee.
