From the ExecutiveDirector
Greetings, everyone!Welcome to the beautiful
month of May! I just love thegorgeous flowers and weather thistime of the year!
This month, we celebrate ourseniors as this is “Older AmericansMonth” - an annual event datingback to 1963, when PresidentJohn F. Kennedy designated Mayas Senior Citizens Month. It waslater renamed “Older AmericansMonth,” honoring olderAmericans and celebrating theircontributions to society.
As I walk Josephine’s Kitchenand our Neighborhood diningroom during dining hour, I seethese rooms full of residents whohave contributed in so manyways. I am truly in awe. In oneinstance, I remember getting onan elevator when I first startedhere at Burbank with a womanwhom I did not recognize. I askedher whom she was visiting, andshe replied that she lived here atBelmont Village! I told her I wasnew, but thought I had met most
of the residents. She stated thatshe works at the historical societyhere at Burbank and is gone muchof the time. I was so impressedwith her energy and excitement asshe was telling me about her role!We have retired doctors whoreside here along with theirpatients. One of our residentsowned a restaurant locally;another worked at a well-knownrestaurant for over forty yearswhile another resident worked atanother local restaurant for over50 years! We have teachers, accountants, and even a femalewar veteran who was a gunneryspecialist.
I could go on and on as thiscommunity is full of residentswho have worked and volunteeredmany hours in their communities. On behalf of the team here atBurbank, we want to thank all ofyou for your contributions andwish you the best during yourspecial month of May.
With my warmest wishes to allof you,
Mary Jane

May Is “OccupationalTherapy” Month
From DRCSTammy Cooper
Occupational Therapy istherapy based on performing themeaningful activities of dailyliving (self-care skills, education, work and social skills), especiallyto enable or enhance participationin such activities despiteimpairments or limitations inphysical or mental functioning.
Occupational therapists areskilled professionals. Theireducation includes the study ofhuman growth and development, with specific emphasis on thesocial, emotional and physicaleffects of illness and injury. Theyare unique in that they look at thewhole picture when it comes to aperson’s treatment.
They look at the person’sabilities, task to be performed, and the environment in which thetask is to take place.
The older adult benefits fromoccupational therapy becausetheir goal is to assist withregaining or maintaining a level inindependence that will allowthem to age in place for as long as
possible. Occupational therapyhas been proven effective forseniors living with variousmedical conditions or recoveringfrom surgery. In addition toworking with individuals toincrease strength or regainimportant life supporting skills, occupational therapists workthroughout the community, counseling families, localgovernments, and communitygroups to ensure that each isdoing what it can to help olderadults maintain theirindependence.
Belmont Village offers bothoccupational therapy and physicaltherapy services. Our WellnessCenter nurses work closely withour therapists to identify thoseresidents who would benefit fromthese therapies and contacts thefamilies and physicians tocoordinate care.
We encourage, educate andpromote healthy living.
Employee AppreciationParty
