I love everything about April, except for the 15th! Tax time can be an overwhelming season no matter what age we are. Let’s move past the 15th and on to the 16th, which also represents a very important day; however, will not cost you a penny! April 16th is “National Healthcare Decision Day,” which is a day that I truly promote. Recently, I attended a symposium on Advanced Directives and was amazed to learn that so many of us, including top medical doctors, struggle to discuss their wants and wishes when it comes to their own healthcare decisions. Sometimes these conversations are just plain difficult, as we don’t typically speak about whether or not we want a feeding tube while out to breakfast with our children. At this event, a well-known surgeon in the Orange County area spoke of her difficulty to have a conversation with her father, as he was recently diagnosed with cancer. Her father had hidden his Durable Power of Attorney, and refused to show or discuss his wishes. This daughter, who stated she had many conversations with her patients on this subject, was totally distraught that she could not have an open discussion with her father. I know that most of you do have some sort of Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare, and/or POLST form. Some of you had these documents drawn up many years ago. It’s normal for our thoughts and feelings on our directives to change throughout our adult lives. I encourage you to have a conversation with your loved ones and make sure that everyone is on the same page with your wishes. If this conversation is difficult to have, reach out to your doctor as they can be a wonderful liaison. Additionally, we have POLST forms in our office if you would like to fill one out or make any changes to your current document. This form will provide a quick understanding of your wishes if any medical emergency should arise. I wish you all a very happy and healthy April! Mary Jane

April Is “AlcoholAwareness” Month

From DRCSTammy Cooper

Since 1987, April has beendesignated to be AlcoholAwareness Month by the NationalCouncil on Alcoholism and DrugDependence, Inc. (NCADD).Often times, people get caught upin the glitz and glamour ofalcohol, and the fact that alcoholis a drug is promptly forgotten. That’s why once a year, it’s goodto remind people about thedangers and health implicationsassociated with alcohol.

Alcohol abuse and alcoholismcan affect all aspects of a person’slife. 1 in every 12 adults sufferfrom alcohol abuse ordependence; it is the mostcommonly used addictivesubstance in the United States.More than 7 million children livein a household where at least oneparent is dependent on or hasabused alcohol.

Over time, excessive alcoholuse can lead to numerous healthproblems, including dementia, liver diseases, and cardiovascularproblems. Alcoholism has little to

do with how long one has beendrinking or how much alcohol isconsumed, but with a person’suncontrollable need for alcohol.

We can make a difference byencouraging our family or friendsto make small changes, likekeeping track of their drinkingand setting drinking limits. Wecan stay proactive by knowingwhat we’re drinking and howmuch alcohol is in it. And alwaysdrink plenty of water in betweendrinks. And remember, the oldadage “everything in moderation”is never truer than when drinkingalcohol.
