Why do we have to pay for books? DPS provides books that supplement and support their approved curriculum. The IB and AP curriculums

are advanced programs, so DPS does not provide books for AP or IB classes at George Washington High School. The Foundation is buying sets of books for the classroom to help offset these additional costs. The Foundation bought 3 sets of English books, 2 sets of History books and 1 set of Economics text books for the 2008-2009 school year. Make sure to fill out the Free and Reduced Lunch form provided by DPS if you would like to qualify for discounted IB books and IB fees. These forms have been mailed to every household in DPS. These forms must be completed by October 1st and

the confirmation letter returned to Suzanne Geimer by November 1st to qualify for discounts.

What happens if I did not make it to registration? 9th Graders and their parents may take their registration packet to school anytime after registration, but you will not be able to get your school ID until the first week of school. 10th, 11th and 12th graders may take their registration packets to school anytime after registration. You will not get your ID until the

first week of school. You will not be able to get your bus pass until the first week of school unless you qualify for a free bus pass.

If you qualify for a free RTD bus pass, it will be available at registration.

Mock Trial Team Goes to Nationals!

Barbara Gail-Martinez along with Colorado attorneys Dennis Kaw and Lindsey Rockroth took the George Washington Mock Trial team to the national competition in Wilmington, Delaware. GW placed 5th after competing against teams from 46 states and 3 foreign countries. Mock

Trial is open to the entire school, but this year all of the members were IB students. GW was the first DPS team ever to place first in state. Only teams that win their state competition advanced to compete in the Nationals. The Colorado Bar Association donated $5000 and the IB Foundation donated $1000 towards the trip. Brenton Weyi missed the first day's competition due to IB exams, but joined his teammates on Saturday. Team members Sarah Zapiler, Troy Reiss, Connor Phillips, Zander Louden, Peter Wright, Alex Bates, Brenton Weyi and time keeper Habab Bandri placed 5th in the competition. Sarah won outstanding attorney and Peter Wright won outstanding witness. The team is looking forward to another very successful season in 2008-2009 and welcomes anyone interested in participating and competing in the activity. If your student is interested in getting involved with Mock Trial, please email the sponsor, [email protected].

Seven from Speech and Debate Team Compete in National Tournament In June, seven members of the GW Speech and Debate team competed in the National Forensic League National Tournament, in Las Vegas, Nevada. All competitors nearly broke to semi-finals. One debater, Brenton Weyi, placed 6th in Extemporaneous Commentary.

Three of these national qualifiers graduated in May: Brenton Weyi, Cody Troyer, and Zafar Moosajee. Four will be key members of next year’s ever-growing GW team: Joanna Foote (senior), Gabe Neslin (junior), Max Wood (junior), and Brendan Patrick (sophomore). Coach Maryrose Kohan and parents Pam and Bob Troyer chaperoned and judged events. Gabe Rusk (junior) offered important support from Denver. There were 3,000 competitors at this meet from around the United States. It was an achievement for seven GW students to qualify, and we expect even more to travel to Nationals next year!

THE IB COUNSELING AND COLLEGE CORNER

This feature of the Broadcaster helps keep you informed about important dates, activities, and meetings that are related to the college application process. It is

extremely important for students to plan ahead so as not to miss deadlines and not to overwhelm faculty and administrators with last-minute requests which they may not be able to accommodate. Juniors should begin and Seniors should complete any required standardized testing. Please familiarize yourselves with what various colleges require and plan accordingly. Juniors and sophomores wo want a trial run have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) at GW. Registration is through the school, not online. Alternatively the test is offered on Wednesday, October 15, but not at GW. Students will receive more information in school. Week of October 27: If you are planning college visits this fall, please schedule them during this week. Since school is not in session October 29-31, faculty will assume that Seniors will be using that week to complete any final revisions to their extended essays and to visit colleges. November 1: Deadline for submitting Early Decision and Early Action applications to many colleges. Check your selected schools’ timelines and requirements carefully. January 1: Deadline for submitting Regular Decision applications to many colleges. Again, check your selected schools’ requirements carefully. Some schools have earlier deadlines if you want to be considered for scholarships. Late April: State-mandated ACT testing for all Juniors. GW arranges registration and fees, and the test is administered during the school day. Please note that this version of the ACT does not include the optional Writing Test.

Director’s Corner Welcome to our new and returning IB students and parents! I’ve had an exciting summer working at IB conferences and learning about some changes coming in our international organization. More relevant to all of you are the changes happening at George Washington this school year. The first important event of the new school year is registration. It is especially important this year because I will not be in the office until August 18, and any scheduling problems will need to be addressed at registration.

I realize that errors may appear in your tentative class schedules and GW administration has a plan to resolve them as quickly as possible. If you need a schedule change that fits the criteria mentioned in your registration packet please follow the instructions: Copy your original schedule; put your phone number on the original and turn it in with clear explanations of the problem and the changes that need to be made. Keep in mind that IB courses always take precedence over electives, so you may not get your first choice elective. If you are a junior or senior, HL and SL courses that you must have and can anticipate the “big picture” of your Diploma. It is wise to indicate which electives you might accept, should a change have to be made.

As many of you know, the counseling staff is being changed. Mrs. Ashford has retired and two new

counselors are to be added. The plan is to divide the school as follows: A-Mc grades 9 and 1 assigned to new counselor, Ms. Lindsey Vesceri; Md-Z grades 9 and 11 to counselor to be announced; A-Mc grades 10 and 12 to Ms. Vigil; Md-Z grades 10-12 assigned to Ms. Smith. This new plan will include all IB students, with the exception of this year’s IB seniors. I will continue to be the counselor of record for the class of ’09 and we will follow the plan we have already announced for college applications.

With regret we say goodbye to Mr. Achbach, who has reached the limits of his post retirement

allowed hours. I look forward to working with the new IB Office Assistant, Marjorie Lane, who will be working part-time. Be sure to come by and introduce yourself right away. She will be an important part of the IB team and the resource you have learned to love in our IB office services!

We have a new IB Biology teacher, Brent Stickrath, who is taking Mr. Irwin’s position. Mr. Irwin

selected him from the applicants and is confident he will be ‘just right.’ Currently, Mr. Stickrath is at IB training in New Mexico. Look for his feature article in an upcoming Broadcaster. Returning to pre-IB biology is current GW science department chairman, Mr. Vinlove, and at the point of writing this I anticipate another new pre-IB teacher joining us in August who will replace Mr. Epke. Mr. Epke has resigned to study full time for his masters degree.

We welcome Ms. O’Clair, GW Drama teacher, to the IB faculty. Ms. O’Clair has a wonderful new son Jaime, and will be teaching our new IB Theatre course. Mr. Lacks has just returned from an IB Training Workshop in Florida, where he soaked up the heat and lots of information regarding the new IB Business Management course that he is offering this year. This course is particularly exciting, because it is open to non-IB students from GW’s traditional program who is seeking a challenge and a taste of the IB course offerings.

I know many of our students have had exciting opportunities to learn and travel this summer. I can’t

wait to hear all about them. Suzanne Geimer

A Message from the Friends of IB Scholars Foundation Welcome new and returning IB families! This year promises more of the same top-notch academics and extra-curricular activities that we have come to expect from Suzi Geimer and her superb group of teachers. The Friends of IB Scholars Foundation promises to support IB with funding and entertain your ideas for projects. You may be asking, though: what is the Foundation? A group of parents, faculty and friends of the GW International Baccalaureate program founded the Friends of IB Scholars Foundation in 1995 as a charitable and non-profit 501(c)(3) entity to help pay for equipment, books, programs and curriculum needs of students and teachers in the IB program at GW. These arose from Denver Public School’s inability to fund all of the requirements of the IB program. A list of Foundation-supported items includes exam fees for students in need, professional development, advisors and counselors, the summer enrichment program for your entering freshmen, a class for juniors and seniors emphasizing IB English skills, and specialized campaigns – such as last year’s fund-raiser for “clickers” in chemistry classes. The continued shortfall in DPS funding will ensure that the Foundation will have to increase its efforts. How do we find the funds? Simply, you are the major source. As parents, you enter every part of the IB picture, but the Foundation counts on your generous contributions in particular to pay for the grants we make to the program as a whole. We certainly look to charitable foundations for funding, too, and, in fact, have hired Kim Jacques, a professional grant-writer, to help us in this direction. But your financial support for the IB program is crucial to maintain George Washington as one of the best high schools in the United States. Just check out the magazine covers hanging on Suzi Geimer’s walls for proof!

We have been fortunate enough in the past three years to have received a challenge grant of $15,000 from an alumni’s family foundation, which has been matched by contributions from IB families and other foundations. As of now, while we are hopeful, we do not yet know whether these foundations will be able to assist the IB Foundation in our fundraising efforts this year. This means that contributions from IB families will be as important as ever to the continued excellence of the IB program at GW. Later this fall, the Friends of IB Scholars Foundation will be sending a letter to all IB families asking for support. Every donation, whether it’s $25, $50, $100, or more, makes a difference. Donations are also tax deductible. We would also be grateful to receive contributions from employers, businesses or other charitable foundations, or to discuss a challenge grant to be matched by other contributions. You might let other IB alumni families know about our efforts, as we are always thankful for the donations we receive from alumni families and students. For now, please consider the following: First, please pay your Parents Association dues of $40. The Parents Association is distinct from the Foundation, for it provides for dozens of everyday activities for IB. Second, please contact me if you wish to get involved in fund-raising. I hope we can chart a course to build an endowment for IB to place funding on a permanent and secure footing. Those of you with experience in this department, or simply with ideas and energy - or if you have questions or comments on any aspect of IB – feel free to call me at home, at 303-364-9181, or reach me by email, at [email protected]. This is an exciting year that holds great prospects for IB; get in on the ground floor of our amazing program! Tom Zeiler, President, Friends of IB Scholars Foundation
