Newsletter No. 28 - Term 3 – Week 8 6 September 2018

From the Acting Principal The Tupou Family have asked us to share the following letter with you. We wish Karli all the best for the Championships later this year.

To the Kalinda Primary School Community, Families and Friends,

On behalf of Karli and the Family, we would like to extend our sincere

gratitude towards the overwhelming support shown to Karli in representing Victoria at the

National Netball Championships in Darwin.

We are extremely grateful and humbled by the funds and donations raised to help with the

expenses for Karli in making it to the team.

Your generosity and support has given her the opportunity in ensuring her attendance to a

major pathway for young athletes like Karli. Without all the wonderful support shown, it

would have been a heavy burden on our family to raise alone. So, with our deepest sincerity,

we thank you all.

At the end of 2018, Karli will be the last of our four children to have completed her years at

Kalinda Primary School, and we would like to acknowledge all the wonderful teachers,

administrators and staff who have guided, been supportive and a huge influence in helping

mould not just Karli, but her older siblings as well. Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Tupou Family.

Sporting Successes

There is not a lunchtime that goes by where I do not hear an announcement for a particular sporting team or squad to ‘meet Miss Swingler in the stadium for training’, and the exceptional dedication of Miss Swingler and all the many hours of training our teams are putting in is most certainly paying off! We have had four of our Hooptime teams make this year’s regional finals next term and in Tuesday’s district athletics competition Kalinda PS came 2nd in track, 2nd in field and 2nd overall out of nine schools. Several of our students will now progress to the next level of competition – amazing!

Wishing everyone a lovely sunny Saturday and Sunday! ERIN NORMAN ACTING PRINCIPAL 2018 PARENT OPINION SURVEY – CLOSING THIS SUNDAY! WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK! Recently, a random selection of parents were invited to participate in this year’s Parent Opinion Survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The Parent Opinion Survey has now been extended to Sunday 9th September. We would very much appreciate parents completing the survey, which only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. The information gained from this survey will help us to plan curriculum programs for the next few years. Please feel free to ring us if you would like more information.

ASSESSMENT & REPORTING SURVEY At Kalinda Primary School we place high value on the school/family partnership that is crucial to a child's education. This term, we are seeking your feedback around Assessment and Reporting. Please see a survey at this link: bit.ly/KPSassessment Through this survey, we are seeking your feedback regarding areas of Assessment and Reporting. We welcome any feedback you may have and invite you to direct any queries raised by this survey to Lauren Hopkins, Acting Assistant Principal. PLEASE NOTE: We ask that you select your ELDEST CHILD when thinking about your responses to this survey. If you feel that you have alternative opinions regarding other children in your family, please complete a separate survey for each child. The survey will remain active until Tuesday 18th September, result summaries will be shared through the newsletter. Thank you in advance for your time.

eSmart Week at Kalinda There has been many wonderful things happening in the school this week centred around National eSmart week. Classes have been discussing safe and responsible use of technology and it has been lovely to hear even our youngest children articulating clear understanding of the strength it takes to be sensible online and how sharing personal information or saying something unkind online can have both immediate and long-term consequences.

Last night we welcomed Martine Oglethorpe from the Modern Parent to talk to us about Managing Technology in the Home. Martine works extensively with the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. Martine has some fabulous advice that was not only relatable but also realistic and sustainable for our families. She focussed her presentation on Video Gaming, Consuming Content, Social Media, Screen Control and the role of the parent. Of note was the most common Digital Parenting Myths that she spoke about:

Myth 1: I’m glad my child is still young, I don’t have to think about it yet. Myth 2: I have set up my filters and settings so I no longer need to worry. Myth 3: It’s ok, my child won’t be allowed on Facebook anyway! Myth 4: It moves too fast, it’s all too hard, I can’t keep up. You can read more of Martine’s work at https://themodernparent.net/ Today we were all wowed by fast paced, funny, informative and interesting “The Protectors” show by Brainstorm Productions. We heard about ways to be assertive as opposed to aggressive or submissive and the Protectors showed us ways to protect ourselves online. The phrase (and song) “Tell! Block! Delete!” was memorable for the students. To top off a great eSmart week at Kalinda, on Wednesday morning some staff attended one of our Techie Brekkies to learn more about using Google Apps collaboratively with children in all year levels. Techie Brekkies run a couple of times a term and staff sign up to learn about one particular aspect of technology in an informal session. We are so lucky to have such motivated staff at Kalinda; teachers are learners too! LAUREN HOPKINS ACTING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

FOOTY MATHS DAY

Wednesday 19th September

Wear your favourite team colours (any sport!) and take part in some fun maths

challenges with a sporting twist.

All students and teachers are asked to wear a number somewhere on their

outfit. The number can be permanent (like on the back of a footy jumper or

basketball top) or temporary (masking tape, safety pins, chalk etc). The whole

school will be doing a number investigation with our numbers.

*NB: Numbers must be one or two digits, no larger.

We will finish our day with a celebration assembly

at 3pm in the Stadium. We can’t wait!

Keeping in touch with your child’s learning.

Our Student Sites can be accessed at home at any time to help families keep up to date with what is happening in classrooms. We have recently reviewed all of our Student sites and at any level in the school parents can see a summary of the Literacy, Numeracy and CBL focus’ for each week, as well as other updates and reminders.

A link to Level homepages can be found under the icon on Compass.

A reminder that parents can log into student sites by entering:

Username: [email protected]

Password: student birthdate, format: dd/mm/yyyy

(You can find your child’s code on their Compass page if you are not sure, they generally take a format similar to xyz001 or wxyz001)

In classes 1-6 all children are familiar with logging onto our Google platform so please ask your child for help logging on if necessary. Foundation families please speak to your class teacher or the school office if you are having issues.

Note: Where parents have other google or Gmail accounts, it is important that you are logged out of other accounts before accessing the Kalinda site with the details explained above. This is most often the cause of errors with access.

Hot tip: Sites work best on a Chrome browser, with our second preference being Safari.

KALINDA WELLBEING

A New Initiative at Kalinda Primary School

There is significant research and evidence that gardens can have positive effects on students. Gardening and outdoor work can be used to build science, math, and problem-solving skills as well as focus students’ attention, reduce stress, and give students a sense of satisfaction by doing something with their hands. Gardens, which have many possibilities and can incorporate a wide range of activities, are the perfect means to developing different skills in our student population. We have long recognised this research with our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program for our Grade 3/4 students. Shortly we will also be piloting a ‘Tool Time Group’ at Kalinda Primary, initially this program will only be offered to our Grade 5/6 students. The ‘Kalinda Tool Time Group’ will operate in line with the philosophy espoused above and will focus on the completion of small projects in our Kalinda gardens, the first of which will be the design, planning and building of garden beds. The Club, consisting of approximately 10 students, will work with Kelly Woodman (our SAKG teacher) on a Wednesday morning from 9:00-10:30am. We are offering all students in Grade 5/6 the opportunity to apply to be a part of the group. To apply, students need to write a short letter to Kelly and MrsNorman explaining why they would like to be a part of the Kalinda Tool Time Group. These letters will be due by next Tuesday 11th September. We are also seeking enthusiastic parent and/or grandparent volunteers who might enjoy working alongside our students and teaching them how to plan and problem solve and use the various tools we will need to work in order to complete various projects. If you are interested and have a current Working with Children Check, please leave your details with the office and Kelly Woodman or I will be in touch. BIANCA DAVIES WELLBEING COORDINATOR

2019 ENROLMENTS If there are any families already at Kalinda that have younger brothers or sisters starting in 2019, and who have not yet been enrolled, please come in to the office and pick up a Student Enrolment Form as soon as possible. If your family is intending to leave Kalinda at the end of the year, or before, please let us know by email to [email protected] or send in a note to the office. It would be very much appreciated if this could be done as soon as possible so that grades for next year can be organised. We will soon be planning classes for 2019 and need to know final numbers before the end of this term.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Due to the Grade 3/4 Phillip Island Camp next week, the Breakfast Club will not be running on Tuesday morning. It will be open on Thursday morning, as usual.

VISUAL ARTS NEWS Over the last couple of weeks, student artwork has been based on several of the shortlisted CBA picture story books. You will see many of these works of Art displayed in the corridors. The Foundation students read “Mopoke” and made a collage image of their favourite page. In another session they learned to form a clay thumb pot. We tipped these over to turn them into simple clay owls. A coat of shiny glaze has brought these 3D Mopokes to life.

The Grade 1/2 students loved reading Patrick Guest’s story of little Gilbert’s perseverance in “The Second Sky”. They used a range of water-based media to create a background that expresses the power and movement of the ocean. They explored water colour painting techniques to illustrate chubby little Gilbert. The Grade 3/4 students had fun with continuous line drawing. They read the very funny “Rodney Loses It” and drew the main character without lifting the pen from the page. This type of drawing requires planning ahead and problem solving. Block paints were used to fill the finished images with colour.

The Grade 5/6 activity had a design and planning focus in preparation for secondary school art subjects. “Amazing Australians And Their Flying Machines” was the inspiration for these imaginative wooden flying machines.

A very special thank-you to Lyn Whitaker who spent a number of recess and lunchtimes training our students in particular athletics events. We thank you again and again for sharing your expertise and assisting our students to better their performance in a range of different track and field events. Also thank you to Ray Brookman, Stewart Clyde and Dee West for assisting on the day and thank you to the parents who attended and showed their support. JESSICA SWINGLER PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

JAPANESE NEWS

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

FOR TERM 4, 2018 We are very fortunate to have an Intern arriving in early October to stay with our Kalinda families for Term 4, 2018. Her name is Ms Noriko Sato. Noriko is an elementary school teacher in Tokyo. Noriko would like to teach our students about Japanese culture, modern and traditional life in Japan, origami, Japanese cuisine and traditional children’s games. We ask host families to provide a room and food for an intern. It is an intern’s responsibility to organize holidays. Host families like to share their weekends with the intern though. The intern pays a small weekly fee to the host family to help cover the cost to stay. Usually the children are exposed to Japanese culture and make a good, lasting friendship. Previous interns still keep in touch with their host families. We would appreciate your support again for our International Internship Program. If you have any questions regarding the program, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
