Newsletter No. 33 - Term 4 – Week 3 25 October 2018

From the Acting Principal….. Did you know that the fascia’s and eaves of our school are painted in eight glorious colours; red, yellow, orange, lime green, teal, blue, maroon and purple? The colours were selected not only for their aesthetic appeal but because they represent our school and our purpose. Kalinda is a place for children; a centre of excellence in learning and teaching. I congratulate all of our staff who continually strive for excellence and work closely with the community to provide challenge and opportunity, problem solving and thinking skills throughout all areas of learning. Like our colours our programs are sensational by themselves, but they come together as a vibrant and cohesive whole. One of the innovative programs is the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden. The vision of the program is to enable opportunities for the children to form positive food habits for life. The Grade 3&4 children invited me to share their home-made dumpling and curry puffs. The food was expertly served with a smile, and the sweet chilli sauce added to the flavours of the coriander grown in the Kalinda garden. If the children were on Master Chef and I was the judge, the score would be 10!

In the foothills of majestic Nikko, a transformation from unsuspecting student to deft, covert Ninja warrior occurred. Well, they looked like Ninja, we're not so sure about the covert part as excitement overcame them. Our Ninjas had the most wonderful day. They looked the part, were treated to a kago ride, and were surprised by a past intern, Yoko, who travelled all the way from Osaka to see them.

We look forward to seeing the children and hearing their stories in person as they prepare to return home on Saturday.

Farewell and Good Luck Carmel D’Amico eagerly awaits the arrival of her first baby. The children in 3/4D have been watching her baby bump grow over the last 9 months with excitement. Carmel’s last day will be on Friday, 2nd November and Hayley Crossland will be taking on the role of the classroom teacher for the remainder of the year. We wish Carmel and Steve all the very best and we can’t wait to meet their new family member. KAREN ROUDA ACTING PRINCIPAL

REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES This year, Sunday 11th November marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. We will be selling items for the Poppy Appeal on behalf of the Ringwood RSL from Monday 29th October, up to and including Friday 9th November. Items for sale are: Poppy Badges (small) - $1 Poppies - $2 Wristbands - $3 Key Ring - $4 Poppies - $5 Junior School Council members will come around to the classrooms every day during the week beginning 29th October, to give students the opportunity to purchase something from the tray. They will also be available for sale at the office.

Canteen News NEW MENU – The new menu was sent out on Monday 8th October. Please note some prices have changed. This is also available on our website under “Canteen” and “Notices & Forms”. Spare copies are available at the office. Please dispose of your old menu. The new online menu shows the “Healthy Traffic Light” system, with some areas in green, some in orange and some in red. The green writing shows foods that are healthy and can be eaten at any time. The items in orange means that it’s quite okay to have them sometimes, and the items in red are those that should only be eaten as a very special treat. You can use this as a guide for your child’s choices. FUTURE DATES: 1st November - Canteen closed just for the day. 4th December - Special Food Day – Ice Cream Day 14th December - Last day for lunch orders for 2018.

Helpers Needed If you are able to help at any time in the canteen, it would be very much appreciated. Please contact me in the canteen or leave your name at the office. Senior Hoop Time Regional Finals Last Friday, 19th October the Grade 5/6 All Stars Mixed Hoop Time team competed in the Hoop Time Regional Finals. The competition was very challenging, however, they played exceptionally well together as a team and managed to finish in the top two, and have hence been invited to compete in the Hoop Time State Finals. This is a huge achievement; the team are to be congratulated on their efforts both leading up to the day, training twice a week at lunchtime and of course on the day itself, as they demonstrated impressive skills. A big thank you to Nat McCartney for being an amazing coach and thank you also to the wonderful parents who helped out on the day. Jessica Swingler Physical Education Teacher

Eastern Metropolitan Region Athletics Championships Well done to Kai, Maverick, Grace, Jade, Callum, Heidi, Jemma and Lily who all competed at the Eastern Metropolitian Region Athletics Championships last week. They were competing in the third level of competition against the best athletes in the Eastern Metropolitian Region. It needs to be noted that progressing through to this level of competition is a huge acheivemnet in itself. They all performed really well on the day, trying their hardest and giving it their all. A special congratulations to Jemma and Grace; Jemma finshed 2nd in hurdles and Grace finished 1st in Long Jump, therefore progressing through to the Athletics State Championships which will be held next week at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. Well done to everyone involved. Jessica Swingler Physical Education Teacher

KALINDA WELLBEING

Play is the Way

At our Parent Forum, we heard that many students are starting to use Play is the Way language at

home and parents would love an insight into this fantastic program.

PLAY IS THE WAY® is a practical methodology for teaching social and emotional skills using guided play,

classroom activities and an empowering language.

It is a process that gives primary schools a way to develop, improve and entrench the personal and social

capabilities of students. (See more at https://playistheway.com.au/)

At Kalinda, all staff and students use a consistent, common language to discuss positive behaviours.

Since introducing the program, we have seen a very positive impact on behaviour and interactions

amongst our students.

The 5 precepts pictured below are what we base all our conversations on, the best thing is they are

accessible and relatable to all of us. What do you think?

Have

reasons for

the things

you say

and do.

Pursue your personal best, no

matter who you work with.

Treat others as you would like them

to treat you.

It takes great strength to be sensible.

Be brave – participate to progress.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Friends As part of CBL, our goal is to do something to safeguard our existence. We are doing this by recycling as much e-waste as possible. We are encouraging you to bring in any e-waste that you have left lying around your house that is broken, or any old technology you don’t know what to do with. We would like you to collect your e-waste and bring it to school. There are two boxes at the office; one for e-waste and one for batteries. The final date you can put your e-waste in is Monday, 29th October. The e-waste will be collected from school on the 30th October. Here is a list of the e-waste items that can go into the two boxes (broken, unused and used):

1. iPads 2. iPods 3. Computers and laptops 4. Tablets 5. TVs 6. Mobile and Home Phones 7. Batteries (in box 2)

We hope you can help us achieve our goal of recycling as much as possible. Thank you! Hudson, Phoenix, Jack M, Xavier, Espen, Bailey, Jack H, Ethan, Mackenzie, Jayla, Zara and Seb.
