We turned 2 this year and
our journey to engage volunteers in various
social initiatives has not only continued but has
also gained a lot of
momentum this year.
We continued with some
of our volunteer’s favourite programmes like
Tree Plantation, Raddi Donation Drives, Plastic
Awareness and Swachhta
Abhiyan.
We also started some
From Newborn to Toddler..
unique volunteering opportunities like sparrow
nest painting and setup on the trees, houses.
We strengthened our CSR partnership with Globant,
Veritas and Symantec in
Pune. We are working with these corporates on
multiple programmes like Volunteer Engagement for
Environmental Impact,
Sponsor a Child Programme and Sparrow
Nest Setup.
We are very happy to
share our 2nd Annual
report with you all and are
thankful to all the
volunteers who
participated in events and
made this year memorable
for us!
Promoting Volunteerism
Being Volunteer (BV) was formed by a
set of working professionals to bridge the
gap between people and corporates who
want to do something for the less
privileged population of our country and
the beneficiaries who really need this
support.
BV acts as an integrated platform to
connect three entities – NGOs, Corporates
and Volunteers. From it’s inception, BV
has been organizing hundreds of activities
every year where volunteers can
participate and contribute to the society.
Some people call it ISR – Individual Social
Responsibility.
BV also provides and online platform in the
form of a portal where potential volunteers
and NGOs can register themselves. NGOs
have the feature to create events for
volunteering requirements and registered
volunteers automatically get a notification
to register for the event of their interest.
We categorize our activities into Marathon –
which run for a period of more than 3-4
months and sprint – which are onetime
events. We also give emphasis on building
the capacities of volunteers so that they can
make more effective contribution during
various activities.

Sponsor A Child Program
Globant Company provided financial
support for sponsoring 40 students
from Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram’s Hostel
near Karjat. Main objective of this
program was to improve the learning
levels of these children through daily
tutions at the hostel. Apart from this,
school bags were donated, sports
and cultural day was organized and
an exposure visit was also organized
to Pune where these students got an
opportunity to visit the Globant
Campus and interact with
enthusiastic volunteers.
Visit to the hostel:
We made a visit in the beginning to
ensure that academic tutions are
going well and also gathered feedback
from students and teachers.
Bunk-beds Donation at VKA Kothimbe Hostel, Karjat:
This initiative was taken by our volunteers after
they heard about the tragic incident at this hostel
where one boy died due to snake bite. The
teachers just mentioned that if the students had
the facility of bunk-beds, that child would have
survived. After this volunteers raised the funds of
INR 1,20,000 within 2 weeks and placed an order
for bunk-beds. The donation program was held in
April month where 15 volunteers participated.
The happiness and gratitude was priceless.
Cultural Day Celebrations at VKA Karjat:
Cultural day was organized at VKA Karjat Hostel by BV.
These children don’t get a chance to showcase their skills
in arts, music and drama in schools. Therefore it was
decided to have this function and everyone was excited
to participate in one or other performance. All the
students took part and best performers were given
awards. Volunteers also supported this initiative very
passionately and many parents got emotional to see their
kids perform on a big stage like this. We are planning to
have this event every year now.

Daily Tutions:
Two teachers were appointed to
conduct daily tutions at the
Jambhivali Hostel, they started by
conducting a baseline test to assess
the learning levels of all students and
based on the results prepared lesson
plans. They focussed on Maths,
English and Science subjects. These
classes were conducted in the
evening after school. Many students
showed improvements in their
reading, writing and maths abilities in
the endline test.

Exposure Visit To Pune:
52 Students from Globant participated in this
exposure visit, they were thrilled to visit the
campus of Globant in Hinjawadi IT park. More than
50 volunteers interacted with students and
provided answers to their queries like how do I get
a job in IT industry, what education is required,
how many people work here etc.
After the question / answer session, Globant volunteers
had organized a new year bonanza for these students. It
was a grand new year celebration and both volunteers
and students enjoyed every bit of it. Volunteers would
remember this new year celebration for a long time as it
was really a different experience for them.
Old Newspapaers (Raddi) collection Drives:
We had launched this initiative
last year. This year it has received
even better response and now this
is being run every month in 12
different societies. Many local
volunteers from the apartments
are taking active participation and
informing the members about the
date and time of collection. Some
members who do not have any
raddi to donate are also making
cash donations.
Funds raised through this programme
are used to support our “Sponsor A
Child” initiative. This year we collected
8,928 Kgs of old newspapers and
raised INR 87,300. Total cash
donations were around INR 7,400. This
programme has received huge support
from these communities and we need
more apartment complexes to pledge
for raddi donation towards this noble
cause. This program is used for fund
raising for Sponsor A Child Program.
Skill Development Program at
Gurukulam, Chinchwad:
Students from 7th to 10th Std.
were trained in MS Paint over
weekends for 3 months.
Volunteers started by teaching
simple drawings and towards
the end, the children were able
to draw some animation
characters. The program was led
by one of our volunteers from
core team.
“BV is one of that breed of
social organization which is
working for the betterment
of the society with utmost
genuineness. The
commitment of the leaders
& volunteers is impressive
& encouraging.”

First Annual Day for BV – 27th March
We celebrated our first annual day with great
enthusiasm and in the presence of renowned social
activist and writer – Milind Thatte. We also had many
NGO representatives and a few CSR personnel along
with our core set of volunteers. The program was held
in BMCC college auditorium. More than 50 volunteers
were engaged in multiple sessions throughout the first
half of the day. Key sessions were NGO interaction on
challenges in engaging volunteers, reflection on 2015
and 2016 roadmap for BV and keynote address by our
chief guest – Mr. Ram, MD and CEO of Expansion.
Milind Thatte’s session was also an eye opener for all
volunteers as they heard about facts of tribal life in
Javhar.
Sprint Activities Computer Lab Setup Program:
We continued with our computer lab setup
program this year as well and helped 9
schools. These schools are spread across
Maharashtra. Total 44 volunteers participated
in these events and contributed 282 hours
towards this social cause aligned to national
movement of Digital India. Volunteers spent
their time in formatting these machines,
cleaning up and they also took care of
transportation. They visited these schools in
remote locations.
“So far it is very
good feeling
working with such
enthusiastic team
and will surely
continue this.
My best wishes to
Being Volunteer .
Anurag Paratkar,
Volunteer, Globant

Plastic Carrybags Ban –
Awareness Drive in Pimple-
Saudagar, Pune:
Awareness drives were conducted
on 3 consecutive weekends to
stop using plastic carrybags with
thickness of less than 40 microns.
It was observed that many
people started using reusable
cloth bags in the area.
Swachhata Abhiyan:
The event was conducted 3 times, Twice on Sinhagad Fort and once at
Magarpatta Flyover. 100 NSS Students from COEP college participated in the
drive at Sinhagad Fort and collected lot of plastic bags and bottles. Together
they contributed for 1000 volunteering hours. On the occasion of Gandhi
Jayanti, BV volunteers teamed up to clean the area under Magarpatta Flyover
bridge and give a tribute to the Mahatma. 20 volunteers contributed 60 hours
for this cleaning Drive
Sparrow Nest Painting Activity:
House sparrow, commonly seen bird in the world, is on the
verge of extinction from cities. These birds require hideouts
for making nests which have reduced drastically due to
growing cement jungles in urban areas. To involve the
citizens into the conservation movement and get them
emotionally attached to the cause of conservation, the
Nature Forever Society initiated this movement in early
2006 by which, people could adopt a nest box and bird
feeder. It generated artificial habitat for these sparrows
and also attached people to the cause.
Traffic Awareness Drive:
Traffic has become a major issue in
almost every metro city and Pune is no
exception. Cognizant volunteers made
hundreds of Thank You cards for police
and public following traffic rules. They
also displayed awareness posters at one
of the busiest junctions – Shimla office
chowk. In all 15 volunteers participated
and contributed 90 hours.
Scientific Toys Workshop and
Demo in Schools:
We also conducted a fun activity
of making scientific toys out of
waste material with the help of
IUCAA and Youth for Seva (YFS)
as part of India @ 75 initiative.
25+ volunteers participated in the
training and demonstration of
these toys at various government
and other schools run by NGOs.
Students were very excited to
discover principles of science unfold
through fun activities which are
based on waste material like straws,
paper cups and old newspaper. More
than 35 volunteers participated and
this activity was conducted
simultaneously across 9 schools
covering about 500 students.

Capacity Building of Volunteers
Forest & Environment Awareness Session | 19th Aug 2016 | By Milind Thatte
52 Volunteers | 104 Volunteering Hours
Milind Thatte addressing the volunteer group
Milind, founder of NGO Vayam (works for tribal
communities in Javhar Taluka), shared his experience
of last 8-10 years of working in tribal areas of Javhar.
He also has a very different view on environment
conservation efforts and people’s participation in local
governance.
Volunteers were completely glued to their seats
during the 45 mins sharing by Milind in his own
storytelling way. He started off by narrating a small
incidence of fishing on the river along with tribals.
Later on he emphasized that the environment conservation efforts will not be sustainable unless communities
living close to forests are directly involved in it. His speech also raised many questions in volunteer’s mind
about high cost water storage dams – especially ones close to Mumbai, their budgets and target beneficiaries.
The natives are often neglected in such process and therefore it’s not important that how much a dam costs
but what matters is who will really benefit from it? Rapid urbanization has already taken tremendous toll on
the natural resources and there are no signs of recovery and restoration. City dwellers plant few trees under
environment initiatives but waste dozens of papers in printouts, use 4 wheelers even when travelling alone,
buy cell phones and electronics even when the earlier models are working. Unless we give a serious thought
to our own actions, the environment conservation efforts will not pay off.
Last 30 mins of this session was a topic close to all the audience – volunteering. Mahesh Chavan, an IT
professional who has moved to social sector, took the session and gave some thoughts about basics of
volunteering, why it does not sustain and how corporate professionals should approach volunteering and
adopt a structured method. The session was very helpful for all the volunteers.
Plastic Waste Management | 30th Sep 2016 | By Rajesh Manerikar
35 Volunteers | 70 Volunteering Hours
Dr Rajesh, giving presentation at the event
Plastic pollution is one of the top most challenges
faced by mankind today. Many environmentalists
around the world are trying to find a solution to
the huge pile of plastic waste created by every
human being on this planet. Plastic has become an
integral part of our life and Dr Rajesh Manerikar, a
motivated researcher with more than 6 years of
experience in environmental research, gave an
insight on plastic waste management and an
individual’s role in it.

Solid Waste Management Session | 10th Oct 2016 | By Shripad (Seva-vardhini)
40 Volunteers | 80 Volunteering Hours
Demonstration of rotating tumbler used for composting of
wet waste – volunteer in action.
As we all know, due to rapid expansion of cities,
problem of biodegradable waste has grown in an
exponential way. Approximately 1100 -1300 tons
of bio-waste generated every day from Pune city.
Its degradation is carried out majorly by vermi
composting, Microbial composting and Dumping
off in landfills. Shripad from Seva-vardhini
sensitized all the volunteers on this very topic and
also gave a live demonstration of a simple
composting methodology called “Compost
Tumbler” – suitable for individual households as
well as Societies and commercial setups.
Orientation Sessions at Colleges | By Kailas Narawade
We conducted an introductory session for students at Wadia college and gave them an overview of Being volunteer’s
initiatives. The sessions were conducted at Wadia College, MASCC Pashan and Marathwada Mitra Mandal College.
Overall more than 180 students participated in these events. Yuva Chetana awards were also given out through Youth
For Seva (YFS). Students were motivated and showed keen interest in volunteering for BV.
BV Portal Updates (www.beingvolunteer.org)
We have launched a Portal last year where NGOs can register and then create events to invite volunteers.
Similarly potential and interested volunteers can also register themselves. Since launch, about 88 NGOs and
2000 volunteers have already registered on the portal and the numbers are growing every day. These NGOs
have also created more than 170 events on the portal.

What are our volunteers and NGO Partners saying about BV..
“It has been a privilege to be a volunteer at BV bringing different NGOs and CSRs on a
common platform. It was indeed a great pleasure working on different kind of
environmental issues like tree plantations and tree nurturing activities. My best wishes
to all core team members of BV and hope to be associated with BV forever.
Anwar Mulani
Volunteer, Symantec, Pune
“This summer, my volunteering activity through BV has been a very satisfying
experience. I learnt the importance of nurturing trees during the harsh summer
weather. I am convinced this activity is equally critical as planting tree samplings. I
salute all the volunteers for leading & guiding us for such a noble cause to
preserve our environment & nature.“
Madhav Karandikar
Volunteer, Symantec, Pune
“We are very thankful to BV for all it's contributions and help provided to
Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram's hostel at Jambhivli and Kothimbe near Karjat. BV
has supported us with bunk-beds and also facilitated many educational and
sports activities for students. Our best wishes will always be with BV!!”
Suresh Hake
Treasurer, Karjat Taluka, Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram
"I have seen BV as a group of sensitive people who are young and mature at the same
time. Their dedication to the cause is commendable and they are willing to take new
ideas up and in. The voluntary sector often has two built-in bugs; viz. ego and lust for
publicity. BV is untouched by both. I wish them a great way ahead."
