Every Thursday at noon in the upstairs room at Don Juan’s Latin Grill a group of active, responsive and friendly people converge, communicate and collectively meet to discuss projects and activities that they want to, or have pursued to meet local and global needs. This fine group are known as

Rotarians and are with the Rotary Club of Tehachapi. So, what exactly is Rotary? Rotary is a great place

for fellowship, gives you an opportunity to make a difference locally and globally, fosters a sense of community, promotes leadership, is a chance to give back and is fun. Rotary finds a place for your expertise and passion. Whether you want to lead a project or be part of a team that comes up with an idea for one, Rotary welcomes your thoughts.

Rotary is an International Service Organization that was started in Chicago in 1905. Today’s Rotary has over 1.2 million members with clubs all over the world. Our Motto is “Service Above Self”. Rotary joins leaders from all continents, cultures and occupations to exchange ideas and take action for communities around the world and creates positive change in those communities through our service projects.

In 1979 Rotary joined the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and has taken a major leadership role in freeing the world of polio. This work has seen the number of polio cases drop to nearly complete eradication. Rotary Clubs globally examine problems in their local area and spearhead efforts to address the issues with an appropriate solution. Water filtration and sanitation projects abound in many countries. From food pantries, to maternal health issues, Rotary clubs join forces to carry out impactful and sustainable projects.

The Rotary Club of Tehachapi has established several local projects including helping the Salvation Army with their back to school clothing and shoe drive and scholarship camp program for underprivileged kids. Rotarians have a smoke alarm battery replacement program for seniors and host an annual holiday luncheon for seniors. Recently Rotary and Kiwanis partnered to continue the Breakfast with Santa Program and also work cooperatively to continue the purchase and distribution of individualized books for every kindergarten student to promote literacy. We help fund 10 high school students at a Rotary leadership camp called RYLA. Rotary gives scholarships to selected graduating applicants for continuing education. We support two Interact Clubs (12-18 year olds) and a Rotaract Club (18-30 year olds). The Rotary Club of Tehachapi most recently participated in an International project and has directly provided food, clothing and maintenance work to the orphanage Ninos de la Promesa in Tijuana, MX.

If you are interested in joining, please contact our Membership Chair, Tim Trujillo at 821-0086.
