PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 15, 2016 www.ctkbelton.org Christ the King Catholic Church Belton Page 1 From Fr. John Kim Before the coming of the Spirit, the apostles were practically living in hiding in the upper room. A great task had been entrusted to them, yet they had neither the strength nor the will to begin it. But something must have happened to these fear-filled apostles. After Pentecost they got away from in the upper room. They vigorously proclaimed the Gospel! What was it that the Holy Spirit did to them, and how did the miracle of change come about? Even though we are dealing with mystery, that doesn't mean we can't understand anything about it. We have to realize that the apostles were wounded people. They were wounded by doubt and grief, by fear and failure, and above all by a sense of inadequacy. But after the coming of the Spirit they were changed people. They left their hiding place, and set out courageously to preach the Gospel. All of us have a capacity for goodness. We have hands that can care, eyes that can see, ears that can hear, tongues that can speak, feet that can walk, and above all hearts that can love. But we must also recognize that each of us has some handicaps, which keep us from recognizing our true and false selves. We need someone to awaken us to what is inside us. Someone who will bid us to live, and help us grow. That someone is the Holy Spirit. The power that changed the apostles is available to us, too, the gentle power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit awakens us to the mysterious power within us, bids us to live, and helps us grow. We are very happy to witness that more than 50 people will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, and they will live according the guidance of the Holy Spirit. May the Holy Spirit enkindle all confirmandi with His fire of love so that their hearts will be conformed just as the apostles’ were. As you may know, our youth minister, Abby Riley has ac- cepted God’s call to be like the apostles and leave us to begin a year-long mission in South America. Although we will miss her tre- mendously, we know that the Holy Spirit will work through her to preach the Gospel and create the miracle of change in her. Abby touched the lives of many here at Christ the King, and we will miss her. Yet, we know God has entrusted her to another great task. Please pray for Abby to have courage in the coming year, and to be safe in her travels. Thank you for joining us at Christ the King Catholic Church. We are happy to have you with us today, and hope that you feel welcome. Our parish is a very vibrant community of faith. Are you new to the Catholic Church? Have you been away from the Church for some time? You are invited to worship with us. Contact our parish office if you would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, discuss plans for marriage or baptism, or schedule a chat with Fr. John. If you would like to become a member of our parish, you can register online, or pick up a form in the office. We look forward to seeing you again soon! Welcome to Christ the King!

From Fr. John Kim

Before the coming of the Spirit, the apostles were practically living in hiding in the upper room.

As you may know, our youth minister, Abby Riley has ac-cepted God’s call to be like the apostles and leave us to begin a year-long mission in South America. Although we will miss her tre-mendously, we know that the Holy Spirit will work through her to preach the Gospel and create the miracle of change in her.

Religious Education Concludes Our Religious Education classes closed with a beautiful celebration of May Crowning. Thank you to Deacon Ar-mando for praying for our students as they concluded their classes, Felicia Broyard for her angelic singing, all the catechists and aides, families and most importantly our students. Although classes have ended, Mass has not. If you are out of town, please find a church in the area you are visiting to receive Our Lord! The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith and it gives you the grace to continue through your week. Don't forget about Him, because he never forgets about you! STUDENTS We have enjoyed having you during Religious Educa-tion. We pray that you have a safe and blessed summer. Remember what we said at our May Crowning: "Classes may be over, but Mass continues each week!" PARENTS Thank you for bringing your children to Religious Educa-tion! Remember the Catechism of the Catholic Church says, "Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bare witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues." Remember, if you are on vacation, find a church to celebrate Mass. It's fun to see how each church is different, but the same!

Dear Christ the King Family, After two years, my time as the Director of Youth Ministry is

coming to a close. As I get ready to transition into my next phase of life, I wanted to take a moment to share my next steps, but most of all - my thanks.

I have discerned into taking a year to do mission work in South America through the company "Adventures in Missions" to reach out to the poor and marginalized with aid and a basic

Gospel message. God began to put this desire to do mission on my heart many years ago and He has finally given me the "go-ahead". It's finally time to take the Gospel to the streets!

My discernment process and decision have come with joys and

struggles this past sever-al months, but I am thrilled to say with peace

in my heart, that I know this next year will be a

beautiful time of growth for me. That being said, I know I would not be so

ready and willing to travel to the Amazon this summer if it weren't for the ways that this parish has supported, convicted, and challenged me to become

a fierce and more loving woman of God. Christ the King parish community is truly one in a million in generosity, zeal, and love for God. I have been humbled and

blessed by the many people I have encountered during my time here who have become some of my dearest friends. Thank you for your support of our awesome teens, my phenomenal adult

leaders, and the work God is doing in our young people. You made it easier and more rewarding to do this ministry. Be assured of my prayers over the next year and all the

things God has in store for the youth of our parish. I ask you to keep me in your prayers as well as I pre-pare to launch.

May God keep you in the palm of His Hand. Peace in Christ, Abby Riley
