On the occasion of Rath Yatra 2017, I hope that we shallbe able to ensure peaceful conduct of the nine day longfestival as we have been doing in the past years. This isan opportunity to showcase our unwavering commitmentto our duties and responsibilities towards millions ofdevotees who throng the holy pilgrim town of Puri onthis occasion.

This year, we are celebrating the eighty-second year ofthe formation of Odisha Police. True, the manpower andother resources of the state police has increased substantially in the last eight decades,but so have the duties, responsibilities and challenges. The only way to overcome thechallenges is to leverage on the willing cooperation of the public and make them theco-producer of public safety. We have to tune ourselves to citizen centric police servicein the years ahead.

On the occasion of 82nd Odisha Police Formation Day we released our “Theme Song”,Jaya Odisha Police, as our distinct signature tune. I hope the lively and spirited compositionwill inspire the members of the organization, when sung or played by the police band.

During the last quarter we raised and added one more India Reserve Battalion to thestrength of Odisha police. The battalion will be headquartered at Bhawanipatna and willadd to our counter extremism capabilities in southern Odisha. I pay my tribute to themartyr constable Laxmikanta Jani of SOG who sacrificed his life in the line of duty atBaliguda in Kandhmal District.

82nd Odisha Police Formation Day-2017 was observed ina befitting manner at Cuttack on 1st April, 2017.Sh Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister graced theoccasion as Chief Guest and took salute in the CeremonialParade organized for the purpose. Sh Patnaik gave awaythe trophies and prizes to the selected Police Officersand men for their meritorious services for the year 2016-17. Selected retired officers were felicitated on thisspecial occasion. Hon’ble Chief Minister released the

This is our seventh issue andfor the first time we havegraduated from twelve tosixteen page volume,thanks to good deal ofactivities at the field units.A number of people centric initiatives have been takenup by staff of police stations and battalions in thisquarter much to our delight. The activities range fromopening up of drinking water kiosks in summer tofelicitating of meritorious students and organising blooddonation camps.We have decided publish the “Odisha Police Coffee TableBook”, which is of course long overdue considering thefact that we are one of the oldest state policeorganizations in the country. We need to do good amountof research and access plenty of materials andinformation from the archives to make the contents rich,balanced and wholesome. Your suggestions andcontributions are most welcome.Our professionalism in core policing has stood the test oftime but what is heartening to note is that our soft skillhas come of age. The instances of donation by trafficpolice to a cancer patient for treatment and felicitationof the meritorious students by the police station staff aretestimonies of such small but defining milestones. Let usresolve to continue our good initiatives in days ahead.
