nce again, this was an“important" May: despiteworries and difficulties, despite everything, Italiancompanies attended Ligna and Interzum withdetermination.

We proved to be ready for the situation, confirming – withfigures – that it's not mere chance that our export is nowclose to the levels of total production. There is no need to remind once again that the domesticmarket is suffering, but we think it is important to repeat that– as it has always happened in our history – entrepreneursare constantly looking for new opportunities. It is truethat export entails higher commitment, more investmentsand, thus, the reduction of margins. And it is true that in some segments – due to the crisis thathas been weakening our area for almost six years – we suf-fer a bit… but we continue to be strong exporters, we con-tinue to be the reference partners in many countries, wecontinue to think, to shape solutions that, for several rea-

sons, open new ways and allow us to keep other opportu-nities open.

It is not optimism for its own sake, but rather a simple ob-servation. Maybe soon it will not be enough and it will takenew wings, new leverages for ”made in Italy”. We will dothat as well. The most attentive entrepreneurs have alreadydone it, others are doing it now.Never stand still, no matter what!Selection exists and it is strong, but those who have ideasand solutions to propose will continue to do that.

In the latest issue of Italianwoodtech and in the issue youare reading, we talk about several stories featuring thesame common denominator: between Hannover andCologne, between Ligna and Interzum, there were about600 Italian exhibitors, at both exhibitions the largest foreigndelegation... ■

newsSCM GROUPSan Patrignano casks US tour

From San Patrignano to the UnitedStates, a long roadshow from May to Oc-tober 2013, traveling through Boston,New York, Washington, Charleston, Mi-ami, Houston, Chicago and Atlanta. Ajourney that tells the story of just asmall portion of what happens every dayin this community, the biggest in Europe, which has been welcoming young menand women with problems of drugs andsocial marginalization for thirty years. Anorganization that needs no introduction, where attention to people, work and com-munity leads to the re-birth of thousandsof boys and girls, men and women.Just like the barrique wood is re-born...Two activities of the community – excel-lent winemaking and a joiner’s workshopequipped with “Premium” machines byScm Group in Rimini – resulted into aproject called “Le botti rinascono a SanPatrignano”. Using reclaimed caskswhere valuable San Patrignano wineshave matured, the community createdlamps, furniture, doors, toys, armchairs, chairs, small tables… The items were de-signed by about thirty famous designers, including Claudio Bellini, Luca Scacchetti,

Pierluigi Cerri, Michele De Lucchi, AldoCibic, Terry Dwan, Elio Fiorucci, chefGualtiero Marchesi, Karim Rashid, Mat-teo Thun, Aldo Spinelli, Angela Missoni,Paola Navone, Paolo Pininfarina andanother chef, Marc Sadler. Without for-getting Maurizio and Davide Riva ofRiva1920 from Cantù (Como), who havebeen supporting this project since its of-ficial launch at the Milan Saloni in April2012, recording great success amongaudience and critics.Give wood a new life, the same way asSan Patrignano gives a new life to thosewho have lost and traded it. Ideas andprojects shaped through the work ofyoung people in the carpentry work-shop at San Patrignano, which has al-ways been equipped with Scm Groupwoodworking machinery, also thanks tothe longstanding special friendship be-tween the Aureli family – Scm Group co-owners – and Vincenzo Muccioli, founderof the community. The machines, the wood from the bar-rique and the objects all testify the cre-ativity, the know-how and the greatcharm of design, of “made in Italy”. ■

During an extraordinary assemblyheld last April 12, Acimall, the Italianwoodworking machinery and toolsmanufacturers’ association, approvedthe new statute by a unanimous vote. The document, responding to Con-findustria’s guidelines, introducestwo substantial modifications. First, itdefines the number of votes eachmember companies is entitled to,based on dimensions. Therefore, companies will have one to twentyvotes, based on specific coefficients,so that each member’s decision-making power is proportionate to theirsize, while safeguarding the repre-sentative role of the association, that

must bring together and reflect all theactors and interests it represents.

The second innovation concernsthe election of the president, whowill be proposed by the board of di-rectors to the assembly and will beentitled to appoint two vice presi-dents, building up a presidentialcommittee. The assembly will alsoelect six directors to complete theboard, that will therefore be com-prised of nine members. To ensure continuity in the associa-tion’s management, the elections ofpresident and board of directors willbe held at one year’s distance. ■

NEWS

Substantial stability. That’s the trend of Italian wood-working and wood-based materials technology in the firstquarter 2013, a result that can be deemed positively af-ter the big difficulties recorded in the final period of 2012.

Let’s take a look at figures: the quarterly survey execut-ed by Acimall’s Studies Office reveals a 2.7 percent de-crease of orders compared to the January-March 2012period, resulting from 2.8 percent decrease of foreign busi-ness and 2.4 shrinkage on the domestic market. The orders book spans two months approximately, withprices up by 0.4 percent since the beginning of the year.Slight reduction for turnover: minus 0.7 compared to thecorresponding quarter in 2012.

According to the quality survey for the January-March pe-riod, 19 percent of the interviewed companies indicate apositive production trend, 35 percent stable and 46 per-cent decreasing production.

Employment is considered stationary by 73 percent of thesample, falling by 23 percent and increasing by 4 percent.Available stocks were stationary according to 54 percent, decreasing according to 31 percent and growing accordingto the remaining 15 percent.

Short-term trends are identified by the forecast survey: thefirst evidence is that the strong difference between the do-mestic market and export will endure. Few operators are con-fident in the Italian market and they increasingly focus on ex-port. Foreign orders are expected to grow according to 38percent of the interviewees, remain stable for 58 percent andshrink for 3 percent (negative balance minus 36). 42 percentpredict a shrinking domestic market, while 54 percent ex-pect substantial stability and only 4 percent believe that or-ders will rally in the short term (the balance is minus 38).

The quarterly survey picture is completed by some figuresconcerning the 2003-2013 period, revealing that, comparedto a base index equal to 100 in 2002, the domestic indexscored a new negative record (31). The foreign index ex-ceeds 100, nevertheless it is not enough to drive the over-all index (domestic and foreign) beyond 79 points.

The index of confidence of companies, based on the his-torical record of forecast surveys from 2003 until today, shows an upsurge of expectations from across the bor-der, while a pessimistic attitude towards the domestic mar-ket can be taken for “granted”: the last balance figure men-tioned in this press release (minus 38) is the tenth nega-tive result in a row, and the seventh if we consider nega-tive results beyond minus 20 points. ■

AWARDSCruing Italy awarded in Paris

Italy has a record of technological innovation. And thesuccess bears the signature of Cruing Italy. The com-pany, which since 1964 manufactures precision cuttingtools, has recently received in Paris the "Europe Jec In-novation Award 2013", the prize that the Jec Group, theworld's largest organization of the aviation industry, givesannually to businesses who have distinguished them-selves for their innovations in the field of composite ma-terials. A prestigious recognition that the Cruing, not onlycompany partner to be awarded among the Italian, hasbeen assigned to the category Mechanics and Tools, next to important international likes Bmw Group, whichwas awarded the special prize Jec, Peugeot-Citroen, win-ning in the category Automotive and Agusta Westland, the winner in the category Aerospace. At the heart of its success, the system "Aerotech", a so-lution of instrumentation designed by Cruing to evac-uate hot particles of dust produced during cutting, whichhas obtained the patent. This application is provided witha system of air cooling can effectively and strongly re-duce the processing temperatures, thus allowing to usethe dry cutting of composite elements and constitutinga valid alternative to machining with coolant (wet cut-ting). The system ensures a good finish on the edgesand preventing delamination of the material. With "Aerotech" Cruing has embarked on a path at thesame time on three levels of development and im-provement: health, environmental sustainability and con-servation. The innovation, in fact, eliminating the use ofchemical refrigerants, protects the workers from diseaseswhich would otherwise be subject, such as diseases ofthe skin, esophagus, and lung carcinomas. ■

In the morning ses-sion of 13 May, the General Assemblymembers reelected Nicoletta Azzi, Ital-ian member of Pro-Populus and repre-sentative of the company Panguaneta,as President of the Association. AllBoard members were also confirmed intheir functions: vice-presidents PedroGarnica (ES), Bernard Mourlan (FR)and Fabio Boccalari (IT) as well asBoard members Marc De Bock (BE),André Deterck (BE) and Hervé Drouin(FR). In the afternoon, the EuropeanPoplar Congress gathered some 50participants from Belgium, France, Italy,Spain and Hungary in a mutually en-riching programme, which analysed thesituation on the poplar market from aglobal, European and national per-spective. Aside from some local speci-ficities, it soon became clear that all coun-tries were facing similar difficulties, no-tably limitations in (re)planting, a drasticdecrease of planted surfaces and dis-crepancies in national and even local poli-cies. Fortunately, all participants recog-nised that poplar is a qualitative speciescharacterized by a fast growth, which canoffer swift solutions to safeguard the fu-ture availability of wood, contribute to amore durable and greener economy andhelp mitigating climate change. They allagreed to work together to sensitize Eu-ropean policy makers about these in-herent advantages, which are great as-sets for reaching the European targetsin terms of sustainable development. Few clear questions on the market, developmentopportunities, innovation. Answers just as clear anddirect draw a picture, somehow pitiless, of the eco-nomic and production trend in Italy and worldwidein the wood, furniture and interior decoration in-dustry, where export is still the only lifeline. We de-cided to ask the protagonists to draw a final bal-ance of the German exhibitions of last May, name-ly Interzum in Cologne and Ligna ini Hannover. Both shows need no introduction and, once again, they confirmed their role of leading stages andspringboards for the penetration of new global mar-kets. Unfortunately, the situ-ation is still unstable and uncertain in Europe, withItaly totally paralyzed”. The Alpi strategy? “We havealways had solid business in foreign markets, weare strengthening itfurther with two newshowroom officesopening in New Yorkand Moscow. And weare also in Milan”. An-other pillar is innova-tion. “Besides strict-ly technical innova-

Allpositive expectations are abroad. “In Italy, the mar-ket is standing still, and Europe is not much more“generous” – says Franco Bandelli – but there areinteresting regions, like India and Brazil, that are do-ing very well. We have to find the right way into newmarkets, trying to increase our market share or, atleast, working to compensate for what we have lostin other regions due to the crisis".Export is growing exponentially. “Revenues inItaly are decreasing; it is essential to move farther, betting on high quality products, impossible to im-itate, with the necessary features to escape price-based competition”. INCOMAC Recovery signsWood drying is theaction field of Inco-mac in Montebelluna(Treviso). A sectorstrongly anchored toprimary operations.Italy apart, the refer-ence geographic and sales areas are those wheremost raw materials are located. “The market is doingpretty well – says Roberto de Joannon – withgrowth in the first part of the year, starting from Rus-sia. In Europe, countries that had been very active likeFrance and Croatia, and that in the final semester hadrecorded a break, now seem to bring more satisfac-tion. I am also confident for the United States, wherestrong economic recovery is emerging. The attitudehas changed, we are talking again about projects”. Today, export accounts for 98 percent of revenues.“The future is concentrated in the developingcountries, where the lion’s share is still held by lo-cal manufacturers offering very cheap products. TheItalian market is standing still, with just occasion-al replacements of obsolete plants”. Can there be a strong industry without a strong do-mestic market? “It depends where procurementscome from. A strong national economy means pur-chasing semifinished and raw materials fromabroad. So, we will have the opportunity to see in-creasing orders from abroad, thanks to investmentsby Italian companies searching for good, well-driedraw materials”.The dryer is a mature technology, so innovation is

tion, we are keen on visual and functional aspects,as well as new applications to doors, floorings andpanels, developed in collaboration with architectMatteo Ragni, Alpi’s artistic director for one year”. Next to free creativity, the crisis and business wis-dom suggest betting on traditional products inspiredto the natural features of wood. “The crisis magni-fies market difficulties and the answer cannot be one.Alpi’s focus on the design side responds to the re-quests of architects and interior designers, alwayslooking for something new, in line with time, colorand style trends in general. Then there is a huge po-tential business for traditional wood: we want to be-come stronger and stronger in the supply of natu-ral wood substitutes, exceeding its limits”.

ITALDOORStrategies for lacqueringSpecializing in the production of lacquered and poly-mer cabinet doors and components, Italdoor in Por-tobuffolè (Treviso) has not missed the date with “In-terzum”, coming back again this year. Mission: look-ing beyond Europe, a region where they currently ex-port 80 percent of their products, versus five percentoutside the Eu. “In Cologne we recorded a signifi-cant flow of visitors from extra-European countries– says Marco Benedet, co-owner – especially

South America, Asia,Canada, United ArabEmirates”. The lac-quered product is thedriver for Italdoor’spenetration in themost interesting mar-kets, with an eye tocompetition increas-ingly based on price,

without compromising on quality. “We offer a line ofcost-effective lacquered coatings for particleboard, with abs edges, a popular product traditionally usedby furniture makers to build the frames of furniture.Today, technology has improved and is much moreeffective, to the extent that it allows to define goodquality processes to produce cabinet doors that com-bine functionality and look. The market has welcomedthis innovation, which has been very successful”. The challenge on extra-European markets requiresa double approach: “… either customization, hencehigher costs, or products with less contents but well-defined and specific features. Any solution in-be-tween is no longer requested".

The quality of foreign demand is in line with the Ital-ian market. “Customers are looking for brightglossy finish, which is declining in Italy but seemsto be still very popular in those countries. LIGNA, THE WORLD OF INNOVATION

Last 6 to 10 May, the twentieth edition of Ligna, the biennial exhi-bition of woodworking technology, gathered 90 thousand visitorsin Hannover, including 40 percent from about one hundred coun-tries. “This edition effectively reaffirmed the event’s leading inter-national role in the wood and forest industry, widening the gap withcompetitive exhibitions”, said Jochen Köckler of the Deutsche Messeboard, with a touch of pride during the final press conference. Many visitors from North America, more than three thousand, upby 52 percent from the 2011 edition, and a similar trend also inflows from Russia. As many as 1,637 exhibitors from 46 countries crowded an ex-hibition area of 124 thousand square meters.

“We are highly satisfied with the run of the show”, said BernhardDirr, Director of the German Woodworking Manufacturers’ As-sociation within Vdma, based in Frankfurt/Main. “Ligna 2013 hasdemonstratively underscored its standing as the global market-place for machinery and fresh ideas. In 99 percent of all cases, our members have found that the appreciable time, effort and mon-ey they invested in Ligna have produced a major return on in-vestment”, Dirr stated, adding that the revamped site layout, fea-turing a more compact treatment of topics, proved to be the rightmove, and could well be retained for future events.

Wolfgang Pöschl, Ceo of Michael Weinig AG and Chairman ofthe German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association, sized up Ligna 2013 as follows: “We were especially impressedwith the caliber of the international visitors. We experienced a ma-jor turnout by professionals from Eastern Europe, particularly Rus-sia, and huge attendance from the U.S. and other key export mar-kets. We are seeing strong demand for advanced machines withnew functions, and are pleased to note that a great deal of mo-mentum is coming from the wood construction sector, as a resultits efforts to take sustainability to new heights”.

Achieving these results was almost automatic,“we organized ourselves to work with foreign cus-tomers employing two salespersons who helpedus increase our international visibility, and strength-ening the action of our resellers: they contacted usrequesting our products, and we trusted them”. Is competition strong, especially in edge sanding? There are competitors but “… we try to produce qual-ity systems, this is our philosophy and that’s why weare holding on. We manufacture machines designedfor customers, an approach that is proving more ef-fective than standard equipment production”.

MZ PROJECT Measure-made productCopying and cnc band saws, machining centers, lin-ers (Automatic band saws for the production of largesolid wood lamellas or composed material lamellas),solid wood ripping machines are the product rangeof MZ Project in Mariano Comense (Como), at theheart of Brianza that has always been a referenceregion for furniture. Technological innovation is alwaysin the forefront. “We are investing inthe development ofnumerical controlband saws, as themarket is requestingleading-edge tech-nology”, says SaraMazzola. “Demandis more and more var-ied, for machines that – besides standard sawblades – are equipped with different tools, in orderto optimize production time and cut costs”. With an increasingly weary domestic market, ex-port is the only way out. “Unfortunately, Italy is notreceptive in this period and foreign markets remainthe major destination for our products. We haveachieved a 90 percent export share”. Foreign customers have the same attitude as na-tional ones: they look for measure-made products.“Wee are betting on custom machines, both in termsof options and for the production of machinery de-signed 100 percent to customer specifications”.What would you expect from “Ligna 2013”? “Visi-tors flow are not those of the golden years, but weare confident in the interest and quality of poten-tial customers we have met. The feeling is that wewill have to work after the exhibition, hoping to gettangible results”.

DE NARDIMore and more exportOptimistic and looking for new frontiers to extendtheir sales foothold worldwide. That's how DeNardi from Campolongo sul Brenta (Vicenza),manufacturers of wood dryers, approached Ligna.“We mainly operate in traditional markets, mostlyin Europe”, says Luca De Nardi. “Things have def-

initely changed andwe have seen shrink-ing opportunities forsome time, but westill keep up despitethe difficult period”. Asia and America arethe most promisingareas to find new de-velopment opportu-

nities, but there are some shadows, however. “It’scurrently difficult to understand what is happeningin the different markets: we are often confronted withlarge availability of raw material but low propensi-ty to invest... a strange situation, characterized bygreat uncertainty. But we are quite optimistic!”.

TONELLI Organization at the coreBirone di Giussano (Monza Brianza). That’s whereTonelli is based, a manufacturer of sanding andpolishing machines for edges and profiles, both forpanels and doors. “I daresay the market is goingpretty well and the same for this Ligna,” says MirkoCastelletti, co-owner of the family-run company.“Hannover has a strong international appeal, morethan Milan unfortunately, especially after the cre-ation of another exhibition in Rimini”. Ten employees and a workload that has been al-most untouched by the heaviest blows of crisis. “Weare not a big company and we have never used re-dundancy funds; we have felt the crisis, but we havenever stopped working”. Export shares havechanged. “Before the crisis, we sold 80 percent inItaly and 20 percentabroad, now it’s theother way round. At“Ligna” we mainlymet operators fromRussia, Eastern Eu-rope and Japan, butalso India, China andKorea”.

Europe, including France, Germany and EasternEurope, are doing pretty well. There is also inter-est from China and the Far East in general. Italy isstanding still, just like Spain or Greece”. Export has achieved a 100 percent share, “… Italyis under close surveillance, because banks are notdoing their job of supporting investments, and thereare no capitals available. Working on foreign mar-kets, with dedicated organizations and skills, is theonly possible answer. If you don’t understand that, you’ll be too late. Sooner or later, the Italian mar-ket will go back to satisfactory levels, but this won’thappen unless we see a change of attitude, starting from the issue of payment deadlines”. Can there be a strong industry without a national mar-ket just as strong? “It depends from the industry: Ithink that’s true for instrumental goods, because evensmall companies like ours, with 5 million revenues, need to work abroad”. Today, finishing technologymust meet increasing automation levels, reducingthe need of skilled operators, increasingly hard to findand retain over time. “In the past two years, I haveinstalled about thirty robots, but only two in Italy”.

ANDREONI The crisis of classics?Andreoni from Meda (Monza Brianza) manufac-tures carving machines to process rotary, flat andcurved parts, mainly addressed to classical furni-ture manufacturers.A market niche that, also through Ligna, islooking for newgrowth areas on theinternational market.“Compared to pastyears – says FrancoAndreoni – the mar-ket does not seemto be the same, it's a feeling we get also from at-tendance and contacts at this exhibition. In recent years, Russia has been the best mar-ketplace for us, but here in Hannover we haven’tseen many operators coming from that region andinterested in our technology. The “movement” ismuch slower than in the past…”.Is it the crisis or do you see a general change intaste, to the benefit of modern and contemporaryproducts? “Classical furniture, where our technol-ogy is definitely more widespread, has been losingattractiveness for fifteen years at least. However, asI said, we have always worked well with Russia andArab countries, markets where “rich” furniture is stillmuch in demand and economic resources are sig-nificant. We believe this period of reflection wascaused by the crisis…”. Export vocation is basicallyunchanged, but its value has increased: “We hada 70 percent export share before, now we are closeto 100, obviously with the difficulties and greatercommitment implied by this situation”.

FINITURE More automation for finishingFiniture, based in Saonara (Padua), is specializ-ing in the construction and installation of paintingplants for doors and windows, furniture, chairs and

Europe it's slightlybetter and we seerecovery signs in theUnited States andArab countries, notin the wood industry, but rather in alu-minum and com-posites”. Comple-menting wood withnew materials can give some oxygen, “to com-pensate for heavy drops in the panel business”. As to Ligna, “… it is always difficult to visit our Ger-man competitors at home, but what really mattersis the development after the exhibition. Also for usthe Italian market is poor of satisfaction, and todaythe export-to-domestic sales ratio in 90 to 10, ver-sus 60 to 40 before the crisis”. Was it difficult tochange your business course? The problem is dif-ferent: “As you leave your traditional market to lookfor alternative destinations outside Europe, you getinto regions where customers select the lowest pricerather than a specific machine model. And very of-ten, outside Europe competitors are not subjectedto European standards and have lower laborcosts, besides the fact that Italian manufacturersmust pay higher taxes and operating costs than theirGerman competitors. That’s why it is getting moreand more difficult to produce in Italy”.

ISVEInnovation for the “small”Isve, based in Borgo Poncarale (Brescia), specializein the construction of vacuum plants for wood pro-cessing. They design and manufacture dryers, im-pregnation plants, handling machines, vaporizers, spraying machines and heat treatment systems, aswell as shredders and grinders for wood and in-dustrial waste. Expectations for the future are en-couraging. “The market in Germany seems to be

moving and we hopethis will translate intobusiness”, says ErosLamon, sales andtechnical servicemanager. Before thestandstill of historicalcustomer countrieslike Italy, Spain andFrance, Isve is look-

ing at opportunities in Russia and Latin America, both rich of raw materials and economic resources.“Export currently represents 70 percent of total pro-duction. 30 percent is for the Italian market, es-pecially small customers”. The latter are the re-cipients of latest technology innovations at an af-fordable price, exhibited in Hannover, “... such as“Htvst2”, probably the smallest heat treatment ma-chine you can find on the market, suitable for smalland medium joiners”. Is Ligna reflecting the trend of markets in this pe-riod? “Russia and Latin America, with Argentinaand Brazil, are very interested and offer both rawmaterials and expanding markets, where technol-ogy demand cannot be covered completely by lo-cal manufacturers, so they need to import. This isa blessing for us, although we have to fightagainst the prices of local suppliers”.

GMC MACCHINEPanel under pressureThe panel industry is feeling the heavy breath of cri-sis; an option is to open up new business areas be-sides wood, from aluminum to composites. This isthe approach adopted by Gmc Macchine inCarpi (Modena). The situation, says sales managerPaolo Ghinoni, is not encouraging. “Europa is to-tally down and out, especially Southern Italy,Spain and Greece, but also France and Germany, that cannot export to other European countries asa result of the crisis. Generally speaking, outside

and English, and soon also Romanian and Polish, both strategic markets. “The new website has beendesigned to view and download the catalogs of newproducts”, explains Fanny Paviotti. “Upon request,a password is supplied to view prices, submit or-ders and check product availability”.The purpose is to be even closer to users, withoutthe direct intermediation of operators.“For standard deliveries, the customer searches, orders and receives a confirmation of the submit-ted order. We want them to be able to place ordersthe same as before, quickly and easily”. There isa second option. “After selecting a standard arti-cle, you can add a modification request, for in-stance for diameter, total bit length, type of con-nection and so on, or you are referred automaticallyto the recommended product”. We are getting closer to a tailor-made tools concept.“That’s true for all of our tools, then we will also in-troduce the possibility to upload a drawing aftertyping in all specifications. Of course, this is a costestimate phase, and the order will be confirmed lat-er on”. For our company, this means saving as wellas significant innovation, combined to the expan-sion of the product family; besides the wood cat-alog, Metalworld is looking at the mechanical andeyewear industries. All catalogs can be updatedin real time, unlike traditional printed catalogs, andbrowsed wherever you are. (l.r.) ■

CASATI MACCHINE Oxygen from abroadIn Marnate, near Varese, Casati Macchine manu-facture veneer processing technology: single anddouble knife guillotines for veneer packs, choppingmachines, glue thread and butt joining machines, plants for the production of veneer rollers, edge trim-ming machines, boring and hinge inserting ma-chines, and sawing machines for plastic materials. “The market moves with unpredictable ups anddowns, it is hard to make plans and approach in duetime the markets that open up in each period”, says

Giorgio Casati. “TheItalian market is doingvery bad and Europeis not fine as well; thesituation is more pos-itive in Eastern coun-tries and new mar-kets, although theyare often supportedby European funds.

Without such funds, everything gets stuck”.The only way our is export. “Our production is ex-ported by over 80 percent; in Italy we are still work-ing in traditional regions, namely Lombardy and Vene-to for the furniture industry. After all, quality veneeris a niche product. To relaunch business, we wouldneed attentive consumers”. Being established in thehigh-end product range, the company still hasmarket shares in Italy. Is “Ligna” 2013 feeding op-timism? “We had more visits than two years ago, al-though we have not closed any contract, yet. How-ever, this is an important positive signal…”.

METALWORLDConnected to customerExport is not enough. Walking around the Ligna halls, we visited the standsof Acimall member companies and asked them toillustrate technology, marketing or product news thatdrew particular attention this year. This is a reportof what we have been able to see during our rela-tively short visit, considering the busy agenda wealways have at international exhibitions and the sig-nificant walking distances of the Hannover fair-grounds. In many booths, the staff was very busytalking with customers and prospects, so we de-cided not to disturb them too much, hoping thosevisits are a sign of market rally, or at least contactswith profitable developments. We were confrontedwith a wide range of topics and we are confident wehave provided a useful service to users, who will cer-tainly find something interesting for them.

GIBEN INTERNATIONALPianoro (Bologna), www.giben.itWe met Paolo Nipoti, technical manager, who wasinvolved in European standardization works – wit-nessing to Giben’s focus on machinery and oper-ator safety – so the first topic of conversation werethe latest updates to industry standards. Nipoti thencontinued with a review of new products exhibitedat the stand: “After the prototype two years ago, we

have finally completed the “Prisma6000” panel sawwith linear motors on the blade carriage and on thepushing bar, with prismatic guides to keep a con-stant gap between sliding block and magnetic rail,an essential prerequisite for the efficient operationof linear motors. The latter eliminate the friction of me-chanical components such as gears, chains andbelts, and the related noise, wear and maintenance. But the main benefit is certainly higher speed, over230 meters per minute in the return stroke for theblade carriage and the capacity to perform as manyas 18 cuts per minute, combined with very high ac-celeration. The blade motor can have ratings up to37 kW, the grippers of the pushing bar are movableand there is an optional aggregate for labeling be-fore cutting. One of our customers has three ma-chines of this kind, combined with a vertical mag-azine. Finally, on this machine we implement tech-nology that allows to recover energy during decel-eration to exploit it for the subsequent acceleration, ensuring significant saving by more than 30 percent. The second launch is “Icon1-Spv”, the “machine witha backpack”: it has an additional framework to sup-port a stack of panels above the worktable and anintermediate stations with forks to load panels with-out interfering with working operations. The result isa reduction of space behind the machine and time,as the machine can be loaded as it works”.

ITALPRESSEBagnatica (Bergamo), www.italpresse.comAt the Italpresse stand, there was an automaticmembrane press of series “Matrix”. We met one ofthe owners, Alberto Sala, who illustrated thenews presented for this machine at Ligna: “… onthe loading platform, the lifting and operation of pinsto clamp the pieces are performed automatically, after the pieces have been “read” in terms of shape, position and size by an optical sensor installedacross the feeding unit. This eliminates the needof specific templates for each piece, with conse-

ESSETREThiene (Vicenza), www.essetre.comEssetre exhibited the beam machining center“TecnoFast”, whose prototype had already beenintroduced last year at Xylexpo, now ready for in-dustrial production. It’s a fast and compact machine, with a dual-output power spindle with fixed bladeon one side and tool changer on the other. It wasdesigned to be transported in a container fully as-sembled, so as to reduce transportation costs andinstallation time. The second “exhibit” was a soft-ware based on the “Bpl” format created by Cutworkand Sema, for problem analysis purposes and webfunctionality for remote service. MZ PROJECTMariano Comense (Como), www.mzproject.comOwner Alvaro Mazzola told us about their workingcenter “Pluris” with seven controlled axes, not newbut significantly enhanced, combining a numericalcontrol belt saw, a three-axis milling machine anda boring machine: “This combination is particularlyappreciated for the structural elements of uphol-stered furniture, as it delivers much higher pro-duction rates and huge material savings than a con-ventional router, for instance. Multiple panels canbe machined together in a stack, and the belt saw

features higher cutting speed than a cutter; the beltsaw also has a 1.3 mm working thickness versusa 14-16 mm diameter of a cutter, so nesting can beoptimized to save material”.

C.M. MACCHINEThiene (Vicenza), www.cmmacchine.comMariano Cattelan, sales manager, said: “C.M. Mac-chine is exhibiting the finger jointing machine “HPX-VO” that can produce both horizontal and verticaljoints: as a result, the user can buy one machineinstead of two".

PADECabiate (Como), www.pade.itAt Pade, we met Marco Vucetich, sales manag-er for North America, and technical managerMario Biella, who illustrated the features of his newcreation, “Mill-11”: it’s a five-axis working center tomachine templates and mold-and-dies, with toolchanger, X and Y axes on “cross” table (i.e. two su-perimposed tables with orthogonal travels), and ver-tical Z axis with 1,100 mm length; that’s where 11comes from (there are also two version “Mill-9” and“Mill-7” with 900 and 700 mm Z axis). CORALVolpiano (Torino), www.coral.euAt the Coral stand, attention was captured by a high-rising steel tower, a silos like those you find in Ger-many. Sales manager Giovanni Gay explained thatthis product has been added to Coral’s program;its peculiarity is the suction unit placed above thesilos, which allows to minimize space requirementsand noise at ground level. It is available in differ-ent sizes, with dustproof motors protected byspecific casings, of course compliant with the AtexEuropean directive.

FRIULMACPavia di Udine (Udine), www.friulmac.itAt the Friulmac stand, we met Paolo Cardillo, salescoordinator, who presented the parquet machine“Randomax-Evo”, increasingly optimized: mini-mum workpiece length has been reduced to 200 mm,and maximum increased to 400 mm. STORTIMotta Baluffi (Cremona), www.storti.itGianluca Storti explained that the main proposalat Ligna, though not really new for the market, wasan innovation to Storti’s standard production: “Tra-ditional sawmills follow a linear sequence, while thisconcept includes a return phase to perform mul-tiple operations on the same machine. This allowsto have a complete sawmill with lower initial in-vestment and smaller footprint, while preserving thepossibility to install additional machines later one, disabling the return phase. The core of the plantis canter “PGS 350 (o 450) Prismatic”, with upperarms to measure the log diameter and automaticallyadjust heads and blades for the first pass. Then thelog is rotated by ninety degrees around its axis andis taken back to the canter infeed, in order to squarethe other two faces: the outgoing piece is ready toenter the multiblade saw. By measuring the log di-ameter and adapting the machine consequently, you avoid a cumbersome log selection line up-stream, to sort logs by diameter, only slightlyslowing down the process. This system can be particularly smart and cost-ef-fective for pallet manufacturers – the other sectoris sawmills, for which Storti builds dedicatedequipment – looking for independence from thesawn wood market and its price oscillations, or un-willing to manage large stocks of sawn wood in dif-ferent dimensions. You just need a small log

axes are on the table and not on the head, the head-bearing turret can be much stiffer – similar to oldboring machines – with resulting benefits in motionlinearity and machining accuracy. The Z trolley fea-tures double guides on both sides to ensure themaximum stiffness of tools. The electric cabinet islocated inside the base: this does not mean onlysmaller footprint, as the air conditioner of the elec-tric cabinet also cools the column, avoiding heat driftsand contributing to high accuracy in any condition.Increasing environmental awareness is leading toreplace traditional non-disposable materials with re-cyclable ecological ones, also for fittings likebasins and sinks, which can be made of wood in-stead of ceramic (and wood is beautiful...). Padealso showed a five-axis machine to process this kindof products, with two tables and two heads for eachtable, featuring two patented distinctive elements. The first one is the location of Z carriages behindthe cross beam, offering a safer separation of haz-ardous elements under the cross beam; as work-piece execution can be simulated, it is no longernecessary to watch the real machining process. Thesecond feature is the availability of handing load-ers that move sideways before the pillar, freeing upaccess for manual loading.

It’s a pleas-ure to know that patents are not exclusively regis-tered by big international groups.

PRODECOFlero (Brescia), www.prodeco-srl.comProdeco expanded their wide range of briquettingmachines with the new crusher model “M1-Super”derived from “M1”, with expanded capacity as a re-

Another success is represented by machinewith screw conveyor loading system, very popularin Germany, but emerging also elsewhere, with thepossibility to regulate load via plc, and with chutedimensions adapted to an existing filter without ad-ditional costs.

HIRZTCoriano (Rimini), www.hirzt.comAt the Hirzt stand, big changes were immediatelyperceived, starting from the predominant color, changed from green to complementary red; samechange for the brand, which maintained its shapeand was also applied to the Imàco brand domi-nating the stand. Giorgio Re, owner, explained thatthis name represented a third-party design studio, then he moved on to illustrate new products: “Onthe “Phoenix” square-edgebanding machine forbatch-one operations for medium-sized customers,we offer a patented device for automatic positioningagainst the guide or the ledges for the second op-posite side. It can be applied both to L and U plants, with a smaller investment for return roller convey-ors, to achieve higher quality results. Just like the

stock, and the Storti plant does the rest, produc-ing sawn wood in the desired dimensions just-in-time. In this way, you can also assign staff flexiblyto both lines, i.e. pallets and sawn wood, asneeded”.

METAL WORLDPavia di Udine (Udine), www.metalworld.itOwner Franco Paviotti is always very dynamic andhe presented a few new solutions in his dazzlingred booth at Ligna: a finishing cutter with hydro grip;a new cutter for windows; planing tools with feedspeeds up to 300 meters per minute; boring bits

with new geometries to increase resistance: by num-ber of executed holes, according to different pa-rameters and materials, these bits can make3,000-5,000 holes, 10-30 thousand, up to 150 thou-sand holes with maximum resistance.

that many accidents occur during cleaning andmaintenance. Coco adds: “A cylinder mounted on the cross beammoves the pressure bars, so you don’t have to in-stall one motor on each bar. The machine can alsobe equipped with an automatic loading and un-loading system to be installed in the front section. The belt sawn can cut a stack of panels up to 150mm thickness, while drills can bore up to 70 mmdeep. The pressure bar to cut with a belt saw andto drill is provided with 360-degree swivelingwheels. The belt saw rotation for curved cutting iscontrolled by two motors, one above and one be-low the cutting area, delivering higher accuracy andmachining quality compared to single-motor sys-tems with mechanical transmission roller, which gen-erates a delay in the drive”.

UTENSILTECNICAMontegridolfo (Rimini), www.utensiltecnica.comThe Hirzt-Imàco booth also hosted Utensiltecnica, whose owner Mauro Uguccioni illustrated some oftheir products: shaped knives with diamond tip, bor-ing bits with patented mount, 12 mm diameter drillswith three teeth.

PAOLINO BACCICascina (Pisa), www.bacci.comStefano Coco, area sales manager, presented thetwo major innovations by Bacci this year at Ligna:“The first one is a numerical control machining cen-ter with two tables and two heads, which can worksimultaneously on the same piece, executing dif-ferent operations driven by software “Pitagora”, usedand developed for fifteen years; all of this offersgreat versatility and cycle time reduction. The “Evo-lution-Jet” machine can be customized, includingX-axis strokes up to 12-15 meters, and loading/un-loading systems by Dalso (another Acimall mem-ber), with pressing bars driven by dedicated mo-tors, like the one we are exhibiting here. The second news is an enhanced developmentfrom Veneta Macchine, a company we acquireda few years ago: “Mastercut”. This machine com-bines a belt saw, controlled to cut at 90-degreebends, with a milling-boring head that covers theentire worktable, not just 70-80 cm like before, equipped with tool changer, and a moving tablemeasuring 3,000 by 2,000 mm, with particularly longY-axis stroke. Underneath there are two belt con-veyors, one to extract workpieces and scraps, theother to clean the table with a cycle performed bya new brush under the moving bar, that aligns andclamps panels, similar to horizontal panel saws". We like this brush, because it avoids removingscraps manually, executing hazardous operationslike putting your arms into the machine or climb onit. Being involved in standardization works, we know

The second application is bed frame-works, processed in two separate working areas, one with automatic loading and the other with man-ual loading. Finally, we offer a high-productivity boring machinefor drawer fronts “Frontal CN”, for vertical and hor-izontal boring and maximum 300 mm height, andthe clamp for chairs, also with simultaneous arm-rest assembling, boasting high productivity rates:from 30 thousand units upwards”.

GRIGGIOReschigliano di Campodarsego (Padova),www.griggio.comWe met Filippo Griggio, son of owner Paolo, whohad just finished a demo to foreign customers. Thisis what he told us. “We are presenting a new router“T210” with automatic motor-driven shaft lifting in-cluded in the standard configuration; the motion isnow vertical, we are adding tilting in few months tostreamline and accelerate operations of adjustment, setting and tool change. A new range of “RS400/2”rusticating machines with two or four heads, and upto eight swiveling units. A high-end squaring ma-chine of series “Unica”, for which we offer ten-year

ALBERTI ENGINEERINGGessate (Milan), www.valberti.comWe met Marco Alberti, co-owner and technicalmanager, who illustrated the new through-hole bor-ing machine “T-flight”: “This machine fits into amedium performance and price range, below ourstandard high-end program – it is priced at 55 thou-sand Euros versus 75-80 thousand for its bigger sis-ter – but if has the same technical features andprocess concept: therefore, it delivers the same qual-ity and productivity with a smaller investment. Theonly difference is that it is equipped with motor-dri-ven tables to be installed in line; “T-flight”, instead,is a standalone machine, so no need for that”.

CMC COSTRUZIONI MECCANICHETorriana (Rimini), www.cmcwood.comAt CMC, a manufacturer of traditional joiner ma-chines, we met Roberto Suozzi, who told us abouttwo new products for this year: a complete rangeof edgebanding machines, “Compact”, and a fam-ily of boring machines, “Cmb363”, for handicraft andsmall industrial businesses; an advanced versionof mortiser “AF600” with numerical control.

each station, to machine complex shapes like shoeheels and gun stocks, guitars and knives. En-hancements to the clamping systems of the“Sprinter” five-axis working center with two tables”.

OSAMA TECHNOLOGIESSan Gimignano (Siena), www.osama-tech.comThe President of company Osama, GiancarloSartarelli, told us about their innovations and en-hancements: “The hot spreading machine was re-designed in its construction; heating has been ex-tended to the entire roller, for an even distributionacross the piece width; the roller can be extract-ed without dismantling any part, for quicker main-

tenance and reduction of machine stops. Wehave also re-designed the brushing machine, now with rollers having a smaller diameter to allowthe passage of shorter pieces. We are also pre-senting a big press with large-diameter steelrollers and a coil above and below".

IN CONCLUSION...Having met relatively few companies, we cannotidentify common trends; however, we can say wehave detected a couple of general trends. On onehand, there is a continuing process of extension ofautomation to elements or machinery types not in-volved so far. On the other, we noticed a whole setof smart and innovative technical solutions, whethersmall or big, that enable to optimize production op-erations and to improve efficiency, in order to re-duce investments without giving up anything in pro-duction or quality: a sort of “downsizing”, thoughnot necessarily related to dimensions, vaguely sim-ilar to what's happened in the automotive industry.

COMEC GROUP“MD JUMB” AND “MD TOP”

PRIBOSPECIALIZATION AND RESEARCH

For more than forty years Comec Group(www.comecgroup.it) has been manufacturingwoodworking machines and equipments with awide program that ranges from the small com-plementary machines for specific jobs, up to theautomated lines. At the last Ligna in Hannover therewill be exhibited some of the most representativemodels. One of the strongholds is represented bythe special working centres with three or more con-trolled axis for appliances on solid wood and/or Mdf,usually with a straight and long shape. The greatcapacity of personalization and the extremely sim-ple programming, thanks to a dedicated software, consent its employment in many different sectors:beds and baby beds, outdoor furniture, doors andwindows, furnishings, tables, etc. The model “MdJamb” is a centre for cutting, drilling/mortising andmilling equipped with three operating heads, withfive to nine controlled axis. The works on the ex-tremities and in the middle of the piece are carriedout simultaneously by the three heads (multitask-ing), consenting a remarkable saving of time incomparison to traditional working centres. Thanksto the three operating heads and the Cn man-agement with parametric programming assisted byvisualization with 3D macros, the “Md Jamb” is ex-tremely productive and flexible, and fast in the mod-el’s change. Many specific types of equipment areavailable for the operating heads, to satisfy entirelythe needs of the customer. “Md Top” is a multi-spin-dle centre for milling – mortising / drilling with el-evate productivity and with two work places. Each electro-spindle holds a dedicated tool, so thatthe time for tool’s changes becomes practically ir-relevant. The equipment includes several availableoptions, such as number and arrangement of theelectro-spindles, working lengths, automatic load-ers, special accessories upon request and madeto measure. ■

There were really many machines at the Biessestand at Ligna. Two thousand square meters of ex-hibits, serious, rational, maybe even too pragmat-ic. As if to say, we are here and that’s what we do.And we do it well. In the forefront, the news we il-lustrated in the May/June issue of our magazine,in the “Ligna preview”: the working center “5-axisRover A”, ideal for operations on 225 millimeter thickpieces, the edgebanding center “Rover B GEdge”, the entry level “gantry” machine “Rover KG”, the new edgebanding machine “Stream Mds”,and “Opera 7”, the new finishing center designedand built by Viet for industrial companies. But wedon't want to present a sterile list and invite thosewho want to know more to take a look at the group’swebsite (www.biesse.com/it/wood/home).

CESARE TINTIAs mentioned, at this Ligna edition, we decided totake a closer look at Biesse. Nothing better than aconversation with Cesare Tinti, Wood Division Man-aging Director since September 2012.Tinti – 44 years, fifteen in the “Glass” and “Stone”divisions of Biesse – is attending Ligna for the firsttime, but he knows well he is at the most important

event for woodworking technology, a sort of "testbench” for everybody and every company.“I have to say it’s an excellent event – he begins –even if long-time participants are telling me that thisyear there is some more empty space... it could-n't be otherwise: the crisis is hitting everyone, alsoimportant exhibitions. This does not cancel the factthat, for Biesse, this is a unique date; so we havecontinued our traditional participation in Han-nover with a simple but significant stand, especiallyfor its technological content. We are here with many new or renovated machines, like “Uniline, our multi-center for window pro-cessing, aimed at handicraft businesses, small andmedium enterprises, offering excellent performanceand specifications, while ensuringtop accuracy and ease of use. Weknow the process that delivers goodwindows, our experience has en-abled us to present a solution thatcomplements the more powerful“Uniwin”, enhancing some conceptsand preserving “unattended” oper-ation, so that the operator is free for80 percent of time”.

Cesare Tinti, Mauro Pede, Filippo Bostrenghi, Andrea Bertoloni. During Ligna, we met all of them to take a closer look at the current season of the Pesaro-based group. The resulting picture is very interesting, a mixture of innovation and experience, understanding of customer needs and pragmatism to reach tangible goals...

“Windows have been giving us great satisfaction fora long time – Tinti adds – but we want to do more:we have arrived later than others, but with highly in-novative solutions, offering new standards, with ma-chines accurately positioned on the market andmeeting customer requirements. We know the in-vestments we have made, and the important ref-erences we have acquired will enable us to achieveeven more, because we have all the trumps.Biesse has always invested, “bSolid” (the softwarewe will describe later on, editor’s note) is certain-ly the clearest evidence of a group that believes inits strength and the need to invest in research andinnovation, also when the markets did not give anysatisfaction. We believed in that and we createdsomething important, a software that is recordingsuccess, not only among our customers! Here at Ligna, we are presenting new machines andmany innovations within our solution range, to re-spond more and more effectively to technology de-mand, with machines offering higher perform-ance, higher speed and even greater flexibility”.

A complicated period for the industry and forBiesse…“We lived years of great changes and complexity, but we continued to carry on concepts we consid-er essential for our job: on one side, pursue the con-stant development of technology, in order to improvethe processes of our customers and prospects. Onthe other, achieve stability and continuity in man-agement, business, organization and strategies.I have been working in the Wood division for lessthan one year and I experience an important

change in first person. We must keep going thatway, because with stability and continuity we canexpress our full potential".

What have you brought to the world of wood fromthe previous experience?“I am still in listening mode, which does not meanwaiting or being defensive, but rather approach-ing a bigger world with the necessary carefulness.First we have to know, understand, and then offeryour heritage of ideas and skills. I have been liv-ing in all corporate divisions over the years, gettingto know many group companies in detail. Now I join the “Wood Division” knowing that, I re-peat, there is an incredible potential: we just haveto take the right direction, adopt a consistent, or-derly and linear approach, but most of all be smartand fast in decision-making. Despite our big size,we must be pragmatic, listen carefully and chooseswiftly. But we cannot always think about Chief Sys-tems, it’s better to act, to make, to pay attention totangible things...".

MAURO PEDEPragmatism has been reflected for a long time inBiesse’s activity for big plants. It’s an importantchapter, supported with determination for onedecade by the work of its manager, Mauro Pede, whom we met again with pleasure in Hannover tohave an update on a strategic segment.

“Big volumes and mass production are not over”, hesays. “It’s a segment of woodworking and wood-based materials where we are leaders, thanks to ourrelationships with the Ikea universe and other big or-ganizations, such as the English kitchen manufac-turer Howdens, processing 25 thousand panels perworking shift. Success was ensured by our deter-mination, especially in recent years, to go beyondthe sales of machines and plants and take into con-sideration full service, from machinery to project man-

agement, stayingclose to the cus-tomer's team andworking elbow-to-elbow with themfrom the begin-ning to the endof the project.Take this exam-ple: one of our

July-August 2013 XYLON INTERNATIONAL 41

plants has been running at Howdens for over eightmonths. However, our engineers are still there, to en-sure intensive care, to optimize and get the most ofthis huge plant. That’s what big customers ask of us:full efficiency of the entire system, from equipmentto logistics, from handling to setup, up to software...Let me tell you that all plants are perfect on paper. But you can pursue perfection only when a plant hasbeen installed and commissioned, and the workingmethods, habits, compliance with specifications andcompetence of operators have been checked. The customer must produce. He buys a plant tohave a return on the investment, which can bemeasured when the shipments of manufactured fur-niture begin. We stay with him until everything is per-fectly registered, adjusted, enhanced, because wewant to take care of customers from start to end".

“Biesse can give effective answers, because we knowthat large volume production offers narrow margins, and therefore, maximum efficiency is not possible. But we cannot neglect another megatrend: flexibility. At Ligna, we are exhibitiing “Winstore 3d K1”, athree-axis panel picking warehouse linked to a “Wntr650” panel saw and a nesting cell built around a“Rover A G Ft”. Customers with small productionvolumes, batch one or flexible production are in-creasingly forced to make their decisions taking intoconsideration high levels of diversification for col-ors, items, price lists, special executions; they haveto make such decisions efficiently and quickly, withvery short lead time. Our answer is a single auto-matic warehouse, an intermediate panel super-market, an inter-operational station between the rawmaterial warehouse and the production lines, thatfeed two lines: on one side, a sawing cell for flex-ible production; on the other, a nesting cell thatprocesses single sheets for “batch one” produc-tion. With less people, more efficiency, less risks ofmaterial damage and less time wasted, we can han-dle two different “routes”, one single magazine thatfeeds two machines and two processes. A chal-lenge that has become a reality, a “culture of mak-ing”, and making fast with short lead time, that weare spreading all over the world. After all, this is our mission: invent solutions for thereal needs of our customers, understand their ac-tual requirements, what he should offer to the mar-ket, what growth opportunities he can have. Onlyafterwards, we think about the machines that willsolve the problem”.

However, this implies that the equipment manu-facturer should also know how a piece of furnitureor a window is manufactured.“There are two types of customers: those who needa single machine, and those who expect us to havethe knowledge of a specific process. Since2004, we have taken the latter direction: we knowthe processes, we know the flows and what we haveto do. We also have software to simulate the plantcompletely...And don't forget that many customers are diversify-ing their product range, adding children bedroomsto bedrooms or living rooms, just to make an exam-ple. New issues, different problems, customers withbig lines that have to be more flexible. With our “WinStore” we have given an answer, a double opportu-nity to help them be more efficient in high volumeswithout compromising on flexibility and “batch one”.

What about the future?“Flexibility is a growing trend, although “batch one”is a theoretic concept rather than a real applica-tion. This is not because machines cannot executetwo different cycle in rapid sequence, but ratherbecause the entire organization of a companywould be jeopardized by the management of in-dividual pieces. This means that we are talkingabout small, or very small batches, but still con-sisting of a dozen of pieces. At Biesse, we are ready: we are ready to respondto such requirements, not only for big companiesthat want to set up a more efficient department, butalso for small organization that need to respondto their market with new and more efficient tools”.

42 XYLON INTERNATIONAL July-August 2013

TECHNOLOGY

“bSolid”We have already mentioned the biggest news fromBiesse at Ligna 2013, namely the software “bSol-id”, that we had the opportunity to test and struckus for its “independence”, its capacity to understandour primitive signs, turning them into a shaped pan-el for a kitchen or a children bedroom. This softwarecan simplify the management of numerical con-trol machinery, allowing to simulate and design ina simple and intuitive manner.

“Our major goal – says Filippo Bostrenghi, Soft-ware General Manager at Biesse – was to reducethe complexity of using a working center, makingit similar to a printer. In recent years, we have no-ticed that it was not so easy for many customers orprospects to deal with new technology. with “bSol-id” we have torn down this barrier, working on dif-ferent aspects. First of all, we optimized the designphase with tools that offer a visual approach to thecreation of pieces, simple and intuitive. The userssees what he is doing and is supported by a set oftools based on artificial intelligence; starting froma simple drawing or diagram, he can create a proj-ect and generate all the instructions to get to the fi-nal product. So, simple, quick and intuitive design”.

“Another aspect we have been focusing on is thelevel of comfort perceived by the user when he op-erates a Biesse working center. It is no longer nec-essary to make a cad drawing, take a panel, placeit onto the machine, work at slow speed to identi-fy possible errors or clashes. “bSolid” eliminates allthese time losses with a simulator that embeds the“core” of the machine, i.e. the numerical control andthe functionality of the "real" working center, of themachine that will be used in production.

Working hard on available information and their use,we achieved very interesting results. An example:when you have to load a tool, you take it and placeit onto the working center. With “bSolid” we do ex-actly the same action: we click on the tool and dragit to the toolholder, without annoying PC-based pro-cedures, tables to fill out, data to select...The operator simply repeats the same gestures hewould make in the real world, via a mouse or ascreen. Then, “bSolid” constantly interacts with themachine, collects and analyzes data and meas-urements, checks parameters, and finally, acts con-sequently. All of this is transparent to the user, whois “informed” via on-screen displays showing thepart or the element he is working on or that requiresan action”.

“Three years of development”, Bostrenghi continues.“An intensive period to create a software that incor-porates the latest technology from Microsoft or Ger-

Filippo Bostrenghi, on the left, and Andrea Bertoloni.

man “ModuleWorks”, suppliers of “Mastercam”,global leader in five-axis machining. We used their“engine”, knowing it is the best the market can offer. The geometric modeling part – which is parametricalso for 3D surfaces – was developed in house, be-cause we wanted to meet the “feeling” of our cus-tomers completely, as it is different from standard cad.To do this, we started from cabinet makers, to re-duce the complexity of a machine tool to a print-er, and we have achieved our goal.We are so satisfied that the software will be installedon all working centers for wood, glass, stone. It isthe result of a totally renovated software platform, called “bPlatform”, that will be gradually imple-mented in all Biesse Group machines. We will seegreat things...”.

This is all possible thanks to the people of the Soft-ware Division, headed by Bostrenghi since 2010,including not only programmers, but also people

with different expertise and skills, close to final cus-tomers to understand their needs and their meth-ods. There are also software usability experts, physi-cists, experts of artificial intelligence and mathe-maticians... Strong commitment, requiring re-sources and investments. After all, software has be-come the real playground of competition among theleading manufacturers, because it is software thatmakes the difference, ultimately!

Andrea Bertoloni is Software Product Manager, thelink between software engineers and users. He is theinterface that transfers the dreams of final users toengineers. “We are talking about a cad-cam pack-age that can manage all the process from design tomachining, including tools and machine setup. From A to Z”, he adds. “Its peculiarity is the inten-tion to simplify the life of customers, because ma-chines will be more and more complex, but this doesnot mean that users must be engineers or IT nerds. We have created a button with Aladdin’s lamp, thesymbol of our “bSolid”. When you press it, an al-gorithm recognizes the imported drawing and helpsthe operator define the workpiece and set up every-thing to produce it. It’s artificial intelligence that actsand cooperates with the user, “guesses” his in-tentions and suggest a direction to take. And obviously, “bSolid” indicates whether specif-ic requests cannot be executed, whether the suit-able tool is not available or not installed in the ma-chine at that time. And it asks me to take it and in-stall it. Not only: I can design the tool I need veryeasily, using shapes stored in the library and com-bining them to achieve the desired profile, send-ing everything to my supplier who builds it!Let me point out that we have achieved this resultby focusing on the relationship with our users, withour customers. We listened to them and today wecan provide them with a product that is close to theirmental approach, that they can understand easi-ly and that allows them to pass from idea to finishedpiece with just a bit more than a click!”. Ormamacchine spa (www.orma macchine.it), a leadercompany in the plant andpressing system market forover forty years, at Ligna2013 took the opportunity toinform and update interna-tional distributors and cus-tomers on its new machines. The attention was focused on“Omnia Green”, an innovativesolution which allows, withone machine only, to meetthree different needs of coat-ing. In a few minutes andwithout the use of any type oftool or specific equipment, the machine can be used ascold press for the coating inplan individual panels orstacks of up to 400 mm inheight, as hot press for themanufacture or finishing ofsolid or hollow core doors, panels or any other productwith temperatures up to 130°C,as well as press for coatingof shaped panels with poly-mer film or veneer (for use withor without membrane).

ORMAMACCHINE AT LIGNAWITH “OMNIA GREEN”

“Omnia Green” isparticularly ad-dressed to smalland mediumsized companies,workshops, re-hearsal rooms,wherever a sin-gle machine formultiple process-es is required.

The structure of the pressconsists of a robust combi-nation of steel beams andsheets, solid steel drilledplatens. The heating systemis provided by an electric oilboiler; flanges, which arenecessary for the processingof shaped panels, are quicklocking/unlocking and madeof special aluminum extrud-ed profiles for maximumstrength and rigidity that, to-gether with the extreme light-ness, allows a wide and eas-ier handling. The machine isalso equipped with a pow-erful vacuum pump, vacuum

tank, automatic grippersfor coupling membrane andelectronic proportional con-trol of the hydraulic pres-sure in function of the airpressure inside the pro-cessing chamber: Orma-macchine has been the veryfirst pioneer of this device. Itavoids the effect of die-cut-ting of the membrane on theperimeter flange greatly ex-tending the life of the mem-branes themselves. Theworking cycles, fully auto-matic, are managed by plc:all the parameters needed for

various processesare set on elec-tronic keyboardwith digital displaypresent in the con-trol panel. The

management soft-ware also providesthe function to de-tect and report anyanomalies or irreg-ularities of opera-

tion, in strict compli-ance with current regula-tions for safety.

“Omnia Green” has beendeveloped as part of a spe-cial project: thanks to a newproduction process devel-oped by the company“Econly” in partnership withOrmamacchine is now pos-sible the manufacture of anew material, “Politek”, aneco-friendly extruded poly-styrene, non-toxic and recy-clable, called “Pvc Green”,replacing the classical Pvcfilm. ■

“Ligna 2013 was a big success for Cefla. We choseto keep investing in new solutions, new ideas, evenin hard times, putting changed customer needs be-fore everything”. That’s the “post-Hannover” com-mentary by Alberto Maestri, Sales Manager of Ce-fla Finishing Group (www.ceflafinishinggroup.com).Success was certified by the award assigned toDüspohl “RoboWrap” by the experts and delegatesof the twentieth edition of “Innovation Symposium”,who acknowledged the innovative concept of thisprofile coating machine, featuring fully automatic set-up with a set of anthropomorphous “robot-arms”.

“We previewed this machine at Fensterbau-Frontale2012 and it is recording great success – says Lui-gi Franzoni, Product Development Coordinator, Ce-fla Finishing Group – as it can coat a plastic pro-file very easily and quickly, applying a Pvc film thatmakes it look like a wooden element of a windowor picture frame. This machine solves a number ofsignificant issues: so far, it took one hour to switchfrom one profile to another; “RoboWrap” makes itin two minutes, so everything is really smooth andeasy, paving the way to small batch production".

How does it make it? A laser scanner reads each rollerused to coat the profile in a split second and storesinformation about diameter, shape and position; thesix-axis robots installed on the machine (seven in theLigna version, but there were 19 in a solution deliv-ered to a customer) position each roller on the pro-file, exerting the suitable pressure on the coating. It’s fascinating to see the machine at work, we haveto say...

EXCELLENT “LIGNA”FOR CEFLA FINISHING

Plenty of visitors and tangible interest for many news presented by the Finishing division of Cefla Group. The lights were cast on two big topics: “Inert technology” and “digital”.

FINISHING

INERT COATINGUnder the spotlights, we also found “Inert CoatingTechnology”, definitely one of the most interestingapplications developed by Sorbini – another groupcompany – to fill and prepare the surface of pan-els. This technology, already applied to panel edges, can reduce paint consumption (by approximately50 percent), environmental impact (75% reductionof carbon dioxide), footprint (60 percent less on av-erage than with other systems) and power con-sumption, cutting kWs by 65 percent. All of this whileachieving a coating film with higher mechanical re-sistance, wider tolerance for panel thickness and, most of all, excellent filling of substrate defects.

“This is another great new solution for us”, Franzonistates. “Ever since its launch at “Cefla Live” in Sep-tember, we recorded great attention from operators. In few words, with this patented process, we applya paint that is spread by a belt with an incorporat-ed Uv lamp. The belt spreads out the paint acrossthe surface, with no air in the contact area, so thatthe result is amazing; in few seconds, we get a flaw-less surface, ready for further applications. With just one basecoat applied with the “Inert” sys-tem, we can prepare particleboard to be lacqueredwithout any additionalsanding, which would benecessary after the ap-plication of a standardfiller. We can do an ex-cellent job on hollow-coredoors, where possibledefects can be eliminat-ed in just one pass”.

Evolution from edge to surface was very fast, driv-en by market attention that spurred additional in-vestments in the identification of a suitable solutionfor flat surfaces. Today, “Smartedge” – with its “in-ert coating” solutions for edges – can be found inthe workshops of many painting and semifinishedmaterial companies, and everything suggests thatthe same success will be recorded by surface tech-nology. As Franzoni explains, “… we stand beforea change of attitude that is easy to accept, becauseit offers immediate measurable benefits: in one yearor slightly more, the plant pays back with the sav-ings on paint volumes!”.“Also in this case, market response was very pos-itive”, he adds. “There is much interest and cu-riosity, also among our competitors! We are the onlysuppliers of a machine based on this concept, al-ready proven in production and not just a draw-ing on a sheet of paper! This technology, I say itagain, ensures lower operating costs. In all our in-stallation, in all tests, in many tests we have per-formed, we have always measured tangible andquantifiable savings! Now, this technology is complemented by “Fusioncoating”, developed in collaboration with Henkel;it’s a panel substrate preparation technology for

which we have present-ed some samples”.

DIGITAL PRINTINGThe third big topic ofCefla Finishing Group atLigna was digital print-ing. This is not new, be-cause Cefla had beenworking in this area for afew years, but in Han-nover we could see an

integration of different aggregates and machinerythat allow to choose the most suitable solution foryour specific needs. The total customization of a piece of furniture, notonly in shape but also in finishing, is a very fasci-nating subject. What we mean is that you can havea door of your wardrobe “painted” with a picture ofyour wedding, the bedroom of your children witha Mickey Mouse face, or a kitchen with a glass ofchampagne on the refrigerator door. All of this withthe best painting quality, no stickers or otherkinds of applications...

“We presented two differ-ent machines for differentneeds”, said Franzoni dur-ing our visit. “This is the re-sult of our collaborationwith Sacmi, a ceramic tileplant manufacturer; wecreated a synergy to havemore resources available to achieve a product of-fering excellent results, independently of the sub-strate. It can be ceramic, of for Cefla it can be wood, plastic, glass... we are developing specific pro-cedures and inks to achieve finished products withspecific features. At Ligna we exhibited “Pixart Plot”, ideal forlarge-size high-definition printing. It’s a “multi-pass” solution, which means a machine where theprinting head moves back and forth on the work-piece, handling possible bumps or reliefs withoutaffecting quality and resolution. “Pixart 350 Single Pass” was designed and builtfor those who need speed and higher productivi-ty: the piece is fed through the machine and is print-ed by several heads, achieving speeds up to 25 me-ters per minute with pieces measuring 300 to 1,300millimeters, while offering very high final quality”.

After the creative part, i.e. once the panel has beenprinted with the drawing or decor selected by thecustomer, a clear finish is applied with a roller or,for shaped parts, with a sprayer. This step is rec-ommended, because digital printing inks are verytough, but the layer applied on the surface is verythin, so it's better to have an additional "protection"to maximize resistance. Costs per square meterare equivalent, according to Cefla, to good-qual-ity veneer or laminates.

What’s the wood industry’s response to this kind ofnews? Franzoni answers: “We have sold several ma-

chines for plastic and glass. There are in-stallations also in the wood industry, but thissector is more “traditional” and always verycautious. The possibility to print anythingon any surface is certainly fascinating, butwhen it comes to wood and grain, obvi-

ously, things change.Personally, I believein the success of dig-ital printing, not only torelease unlimited cre-ativity, but also to re-produce wonderfulwood species andgrains. Even more in-teresting applicationswill emerge in flooring, where you can easilymake all different

staves, without changing rollers or aggregates. Consider that we are talking about a technology witha very high added value in terms of visual impact:in a world that is going back to true, natural values, this technology allows to achieve highly realistic re-sults, creating environments and furniture with amore personal, hence more "human", dimension. For this reason, the success of digital printing liesin its capacity to imitate wood and other high-endmaterials, rather than in the reproduction of comicson a kid's bedroom furniture”.

“As time goes by, in order to stimulate final con-sumers with new ideas, we have gradually turnedinto decor specialists”, says Luigi Franzoni, greeting us. “Today we offer painting, wrapping, dig-ital printing, solving problems and offering a com-plete and modular range for any type of decora-tive process. It’s always been in our dna. It’s notmere chance that we are doing well in wood, glass, plastic, but also cement fiber, where there are manyinteresting things we can do...”.

Time is tight and Ligna is big. We leave the Ceflastand with all the technology we had previewed inour May/June issue: the new version of the automaticswiveling two-arm sprayer “Easy” and “Uv-R Led”,a cold light particularly suitable to dry heat-sensi-tive materials like pine. And also “Prima”, “iBotic”and “iGiotto”, the solutions branded Delle Vedove, the Uv oven “Superfocus” that cuts electricity con-sumption into half, “Smartparquet”… (l.r.) ■

EVENTS

Many customers, colleagues, friends, businessmenand journalists from the world of wood participat-ed to the celebration for the fiftieth anniversary ofthe company Maggi Engineering, situated in Cer-taldo, near Florence, organized on Thursday, May9th, during the latest Ligna exhibition. A brief breakin the days of the exhibition, a time to celebrate withsimplicity and even with proper pride, the first fiftyyears of a history came from the foresight of Mr Li-onello Maggi, who, half a century ago in 1963, de-

cided to start the production of power feeders. To date over 400.000 units have been produced andover the years started the production of radial armsaws, vertical cutting machines (until the 90’s),edgebanding machines (since 2008) and boringmachines, became in the last years the “core busi-ness” of company Maggi, they currently accountfor about the 60 percent of turnover. At the same time the target trade markets in-creased; expansion started from Tuscany, devel-oped in Italy and then all around the world in a shorttime. The first business trips abroad were in the 70’s.Europe at first, then Usa, since 1976, then Asia andin 1986 the first travel in China, then Moscow. Thesenew partnerships gave the possibility to focus onthe world providing a widespread presence.

During those years were studied new solutions andmachineries more and more accurate, fast andefficient. The premises dedicated to the productionwere enlarged, the investments in new machineriesand production lines grew up. Mr Lionello’s daugh-ter, Stefania, and son, Stefano, joined the compa-ny and other trusted collaborators, Mr Mauro Lan-di and Mrs Lidia Gianni, entered the property. This is a long history, made of people, meetings, successes, hard works, discovery, customers loy-alty: the pride of Maggi is to have long lasting re-lationships with customers for over 30 years.

to proudly talk about ourselves and about the choic-es we had the pride to carry out during these years, listening to what the market was asking for andchoosing the solution we felt closer to us.Today we look to the future without forgetting thepast. We are sure we had been able to reconsid-er our way to operate, with a future vision morefocused on a smart growth, a watchful managementand a 360 degree cooperation spirit. The sched-ule looks “hard”: to be an excellence in all aspectsand meet customers’ needs, be always close tothem, and manage the work to provide great sat-isfaction for everybody”. ■

“Customers know our products, they know the waywe work, what we believe in. They came to us toask for simple feeding units, our aces in the hole, our passe-partout, and then they also chose all theother products we have been developing duringthese years” says the founder Mr Lionello Maggi.

This company has always had inside its Dna therelationship with the world of craftsmen. It pro-poses machineries designed and developed to en-sure the highest flexibility and performances tojoineries that do not manage with big series pro-duction batches but rather chase the quality.

At present the turnover of Maggi Engineeringreaches about 7 million Euros, more than 90 percentthanks to exports. It is a well-known brand world-wide, it has transformed itself over the years alwaysfocusing on its own vocation, its own way of work-ing, the will to be always synonymous of reliabilityand handcraft care for each product, from the sim-plest to the most technologically advanced one.

“We are a handicraft company, considering the bestmeaning of the term” said Mrs Stefania Maggi, SalesManager. “We take care of our product, we feel thepassion for what we do, we pay the highest attentionto our customers with whom we have a constant, continuous and deep relationship. These ele-ments represent a strategic choice, they allow us

Finding a free table at the Scm Group stand was noteasy. There are always lots of people, but in the endwe managed to find one. We sat down and we putthe recorder on.

“We have a few excellent solutions, we bring excel-lence all over the world and we do not even realizeit sometimes", said Adriano Aureli, co-owner of theRimini-based giant. “We must tell the world, clearly, that we know how to work, that we can propose, cre-ate, that we have still many things to say.I’m thinking about a craftsman with his laboratory lo-cated in a village of the Veneto region, whom I vis-ited some days ago. With Italian woodworking ma-

chines – and let me add, machines with high-tech-nology content – he produces furniture items for achemist shop in Tel Aviv. Or furniture for a villa de-signed by a very famous architect. And he succeedsin being competitive!Half an hour ago, the most important wood technologydistributor in Germany was extolling the virtues of Ital-ian machines and he told me that he has virtually noproblems, once installed. What a satisfaction…I could make a lot of examples: we do not have thestrength to tell the world that we are not only very goodat developing technologies, in cooperation with ourcustomers, but also that we interpret the future of thisindustry every day. And we do that with manufacturers

PRODUCTION “VISIONS”FROM GERMANY…

Considering that we have already had the opportunity to talk extensively about the “latest efforts” of new machinery in the May/Juneissue of our magazines, in Hannover we did somethingelse: we asked Adriano Aureliand Stefano Monetini to stopfor a moment and to have a chat with us, showing the “directions” that the worldof wood is taking. This is what they told us.

TECHNOLOGY

Mr. Aureli, you are sending out a strong and bold mes-sage…“I do believe in this: in the future, we will have differentproducts, resulting from creativity, high quality, charm and reliability, that – with technology – we willbe able to produce at affordable costs, in short time, and therefore accessible to a larger audience. Thisis the challenge that the industry of European coun-tries and advanced economies must take up...Some time ago, “The Economist” dedicated itscover page to the “Third Industrial Revolution”,meaning a production method increasingly based onpowerful advanced technology. “Digital produc-tion”. It's no science fiction. It is before our eyes everyday, not only in automotive or in the production of pop-ular smartphones. A new way of business manage-ment, where labor costs represent only few percentpoints of the final product value, so there is no usein moving out to the other end of the world to produce, close down factories, offshore jobs…”.

“We are thinking in terms of supply chain”, adds Ste-fano Monetini, general manager of the group. “Wehave put our company in the service of the supplychain, looking for a new approach that brings togetherend consumer, furniture maker and technologysupplier. We are tightly entwined to the furniture andhousehold industry, and furniture trends as a con-sequence, so we are willing to be involved in certaininitiatives in order to understand which technologywe should offer to our partners”.

Is this a role that the supply chain is acknowledgingas an asset of machinery manufacturers?“It’s a sort of awareness that must emerge”, answersAdriano Aureli. “We provide excellent hardware withintelligent software, enabling anyone to get themost out of a machine with few, simple, intuitive in-structions. Italian ingenuity has brought us beyondour knowledge, projecting these technologies out oftheir traditional domains and making them availableto many. We can have a new approach to competitiveness,to the possibility of producing better, more, faster, withlower investments and with a more "democratic" fi-nal product price. We can deliver consistent quali-ty, offer reliable after-sales service, control the con-tinuous growth of industrial costs. We have alreadywon the challenge against the mirage of Japaneseor Taiwanese productivity. Now there is China, andtomorrow? We are still there…”.

of doors and windows, furniture, stairs or yachts, floor-ings or rifle stocks, caravans or airplanes!”.

Aureli looked as if a sacred fire was burning insidehim. There was no need to put questions: “The Sa-lone del Mobile in Milan opened its doors to a tech-nology manufacturer for the first time. A wonderful co-operation with FederlegnoArredo and Culturaleg-no, to show what we can do working wood withhands, the emotions that a cabinet maker can give. But we also showed that a working center can makeincredible things: the Bloom Lab studio in Londoncreated a wonderful table, called “Vaulted table”, thattakes inspiration from Gaudì’s Sagrada Família. A pow-erful software solution for design operations and an-other powerful solution to allow an entry level work-ing center to carry out - in 120 hours - the same op-erations that a craftsman would complete within twelveweeks. It was not a competition, but an opportunityto say that today we can produce excellent tech-nology, with unlimited potential but limited investments. This means that a small company, a craftsman canpurchase a working center and overcome several bar-riers. It means that a young man or woman can be-come the entrepreneur of himself/herself, and pro-vide the market with something that nobody else hasever thought about!I am thinking about what they did at the San Pa-trignano workshop, where they used Italian tech-nology to give life to the ideas of some thirty archi-tects, using reclaimed wood from casks wheregreat wines are made. The Barriques project was abig success in Milan, and in recent weeks, a touracross the United States brought the creative ex-pression of Italian excellence through ten cities, andwe were enthusiastic sponsors. Design and architects, Italian craftsmen, Italiantechnology: mix it all together and the world belongsto us. We need nothing else! This is true not only forwood, but for tens of industries”.

to produce ever different pieces within a few seconds, handling all necessary setups, configurations and tool-ing. We are talking about “cell technology”, an op-timal solution for increasingly “made to order” pro-duction, based on actual sales. Better have four in-dependent production islands that can interactrather than one big production line, because you canmake different things simultaneously, manage flowsmore efficiently, and you don’t risk stopping your en-tire production for a small failure...”.

Mr Monetini, it’s a momentous change… “A revolution that started some time ago and thatis expanding exponentially, because these trends ini-tially follow a soft curve, but at a certain point theyexplode!Even the world of wood, that has made somechoices later than other industries, has changed itsattitude and approach, mainly as a result of the gen-eration change. We are lucky we can live this ex-perience, a deep cultural change. Final consumersno longer think of furniture as an item that will staywith them for all of their life, but rather as somethingthey like, they need at that time, but they can easilychange when they want to, just because there will beanother piece of furniture they like more!”

We would have much more to discuss, but allaround there are people waiting to talk with Aureli andMonetini. Time to give it a break; we have abused oftheir time and courtesy. Business is calling and, in hardtimes like these, it’s better not to dwell too much on“philosophical matters”... (l.r.) ■

“Acquiring machines that can make differentjobs now requires affordable investments”, Moneti-ni repeats. “We see great attention among our cus-tomers to versatility, to working centers that can alsobe used for nesting or switch easily from solid woodto panels. It’s a philosophy that is increasingly ap-preciated over traditional machines, each dedicat-ed to a specific task. It’s a change that has occurred, that is still occurring, and that will accelerate in the coming years, with newgenerations... Young people are used to design witha computer, live with a computer, they use it to com-municate and for the simplest things. For them, it ismuch easier to give instructions to a machine via ascreen or a keyboard, and this puts them into a dif-ferent dimension than the world we know and we areused to. I repeat: the huge flexibility of machining cen-ters is strongly attractive to those categories of users, because complexity is decreasing and moving up-stream, towards the phase of design. Designers, en-gineers, architects are inventing using new tools, andonce the order is approved, they just transfer to thecraftsman, or to the furniture factory, a file that canbe “translated” into machine language, setting up aworking center that starts production”.

“Using a screen to give instructions – Monetini con-tinues – or using a software is more and more ac-cessible to a growing number of people. More andmore people are architect, designer and craftsmanall together. It’s a combined set of skills that opensthe door to new worlds, to new industrial and man-ufacturing expressions, new ways of being entre-preneurs.After all, the season we might call “furniture Fordism”has ended: mass production no longer exists, exceptfor some countries, in specific contexts and for spe-cific product categories. Today, “batch one” is king, maximum flexibility and total customization that en-able even the biggest and most complicated plant

Between product innovation, internationalization and customer service extension,“made in Italy” tools manufacturers are looking at the post-recession period.Hoping that a real “Italy Sys-tem” – strong and competitive –will rise from ashes.

Those who do not export, do not innovate and donot provide the customer with all-round services, ensuring flexibility and prompt answers, are donefor. The woodworking tools industry – from fur-niture to doors and windows – keep their feet on theground and face suffering production and sales. And not only; while waiting for the end of recession, marked also and above all by the crisis of the con-struction industry, it continues to look at foreignmarkets, product innovation and customer serviceas the only escape routes. This is not the only el-ement to consider. Our interviews to specializingcompanies clearly show another aspect: the bigthorn in the flesh of Italian manufacturers is the lackof a stable and successful Italy system, as well asthe lack of integrated supply chain strategiespushing all actors to cooperate for the implemen-tation of increasingly performing products and sys-tems. The price to pay includes the loss of com-petition on the global scenario and the substantialinability to react even to weak spurs from the do-mestic market.

MORE AGGREGATION FOR TOOLS MANUFACTURERSDisk blades have always been the specialty of Flai, based in Friuli in Pavia di Udine, since 2012 a brandof US Newell Rubbermaid, with the new companyname Nwl Italy Productions. Today, the compa-ny has forty employees, 80 percent export towardsthe United States and Eastern Europe, and a know-how ensuring success even in economic contextsthat are not so prosperous.“The Italian market is stagnating – explains Pier-giorgio Pozzo, managing director – and no positivedevelopments are expected in the short term. Thewoodworking industry delocalization in the past years,

THE TOOL NEVER STANDS STILL

the stop of the construction industry and the closingdown of plants in the past two years have shifted thebusiness focus to foreign countries, mainly EasternEurope, while other markets including North Amer-ica, South America and Asia keep a lively trend”.The situation shows lights and shadows: “Most Ital-ian companies are small and that often prevents themfrom building up an effective and well-organized salesnetwork abroad”, to support export. Also, “the atti-tude to create groups, partnerships and synergiesbetween companies in the same industry is still miss-ing; a new approach in this respect might help over-

come the problem of size. This limits the opportu-nities to adapt to the new global economic situation. The creation of an “Italy System” could create a sup-plier with unprecedented quality and product range. The first benefit for Italian products consists in the“high level of know-how, flexibility and equipmentthat are mostly at excellent levels compared to theinternational competition”. But price remains themain requirement, especially for general or low in-tensity applications.“For heavy-duty applications, where the cost per pieceratio is monitored – for example in panel cutting – toolshave to ensure maximum efficiency, lack of defectsgenerated by cutting operations and long life”.Product innovation is a must, but it is vital to establisha new cooperation between different industryplayers. “There are wide margins for improvementin cooperation between machinery and tools’manufacturers. Up to now they both showedscarce availability to collaborate, propose and bringtechnical solutions in the market”.As to the product, “we are proposing an exclusivesolution – with excellent results – consisting ofNanograin hard metal blades, a material that allowsto dramatically increase cutting life and, thus, tool’seffectiveness”.

EXPERIENCE BEYOND THE PRODUCTSpecial tools and company know-how can still fightrecession and “giant” competitors on major foreignmarkets. This is proved by Tecnomec, a companybased in Cormons, near Gorizia, with fifteen em-ployees for a special production of woodworking tools:mills, Dp, Hs and Hw drills and heads. The exportshare accounts for about 90 percent at global level.Know-how is the element that makes the difference, despite the not so reassuring scenarios, especiallyin historically industrialized countries; this is whatRenato Persolja, owner of the company, says. “Wesell the experience we have acquired in over fortyyears of activity, not just simple tools. Currently, wedo not record significant demand in tools, but wecontinue to work also thanks to the fact of being a“small” company producing special tools. This spe-cialization allows us to receive product requests ona daily basis and, thus, we can keep pace also ina difficult context”.

Foreign countries are not enough, if you do not havea stable market at home: domestic recovery is es-sential. “I hope that Italy will be again a top coun-try with a growing economy; companies like us doneed that”. The finger is pointed also – and aboveall – at European macro scenarios. “EU funds sup-port the economies of countries that actually be-come our competitors, not for products but forprices. This behavior is causing trouble to manu-facturers like us, operating in industrially matureeconomies that struggle to fight competition main-ly focused on prices”.This is where the heritage of ideas and productionhistory acquired throughout the years, but also ofanother key element, service, play a vital role: “Itis very important. Quick delivery, few days or evenwithin 48 hours, can offer more opportunities to pre-vent customers looking at the price as the first eval-uation factor for their purchase”. A new collaborationapproach for the industry, open to machinery andtechnology manufacturers, might ensure importantinnovation opportunities. But the goal is still far. “Ma-chinery manufacturers buy according to “socialclass logics”, collaboration is still too limited today”.

FLEXIBILITY FOR THE CUSTOMERSpecial tool is still the salvation and, at the same time, the most promising growth opportunity in a globalmarket experiencing a period of crisis. And smallentrepreneurial organizations, flexible and active inspecific market niches, can grasp this opportuni-ty much better than “big companies”. An examplein this context is by Fapil (Fabbrica Attrezzature Perl'Industria del Legno) based in Zogno, Bergamo, thatcombines the traditional range of turning tools withthe production of special tools for in-line machinesand working centers, achieving an export share of85 percent. In a stagnating situation for the Italianmarket and during a slowdown of the internationalscenario, following customer demand is vital.Producing special tools has a double value, saysGiampaolo Pesenti, owner of Fapil with his broth-er Giuseppe and his sister Sara: negative, “becausewe do not deal with bigorders and so we haveproblems to make priceand organization sta-ble, positive becausespecial tools allow us tosurvive in a marketrecording a drop of 20percent. We try to followmarket niches and always offer custom solutions, also proposing a standard product for new appli-cations and technologies allowing customers to con-quer new markets and materials different from wood, according to the trends of furniture design”.Fapil has twelve employees and an export share of70 percent on total revenues. “Made in Italy is still oneof the few benefits for us, together with the capaci-ty of being flexible, but due to increasingly aggres-sive competition, we are facing excessive price com-pression that pushes company out of the market, withincreasing costs charged to the companies them-

selves”. Also a changing attitude of customers is af-fecting the trend of the market. “In the past, customersbought a long-lasting tool as a long-term investment, also for future production. Today, they buy high-per-formance tools only when they need, trying tospend as little money as possible. And they havelearned to see the difference and choose one or an-other”. Final customers and machinery manufactur-ers have different visions and they have to be bothsupported with attention. “The furniture manufactureris looking for long life and excellent performance, whilea technology manufacturer looks for a solution solv-ing machinery production and testing problems”.

INTERNATIONALIZATION AGAINST THE CRISISIn Povoletto, near Udine, Nordutensili producesa range of tools including boring drills and helicalcutters made of widia (cemented carbide) withshank for working center. With fifteen employees, they have always been keen on internationalization:they operate through a partnership with a sharp-ening center in Moscow and have sales offices inSuzhou (China).Export vocation is the salvation against the crisis.“The trend of the Italian market is constantlyshrinking, the woodworking industry is experienc-ing an extremely long period of crisis. Thanks to ex-port – explains Nereo Diplotti, managing director– we can preserve our turnover, where 92 percentis represented by sales outside national borders”.Business on the international market has a “spot-ted” situation. “The supply of tools for the furnitureindustry on a global level allows us to achieve per-formance in some regions – where we are alreadyoperating – that show growing trends or consoli-dation of our position".The first difficulty to face is price competition, “butit’s the continuity of product efficiency that makesthe difference. If a company has to stop produc-tion more frequently in order to replace tools, costeffectiveness is no longer ensured”.Benefits, quality and service: “We offer reliable andlong-lasting tools and we provide our customers withtechnical assistance for more complicated ma-chining processes. Besides, we have a warehousewith thousands of drills for all diameters andsizes, ready to be immediately delivered.Reliability remains the most required feature for tools:“All drilling tools are coated with Teflon (Dupont) inorder to ensure the lowest friction of drills during

machining, higher durability and excellent chip re-moval”.Innovation at Nordutensili never stops. “In order toensure the highest yield of new generation drillingmachines, increasingly performing as to speed andfeed, we are proposing drills with a new sharpen-ing concept, such as the new manual sharpeningmachine to sharpen drills and completely automaticfive axis sharpening machine to sharpen helical cut-ters for aluminum, plastics and steel, easy to usewithout experienced staff and particularly compactto be integrated in assembly lines without problems”.

DOORS AND WINDOWS IN STAND-BY MODEWith the construction industry standing still, thedoors and windows industry – wood included – con-tinues to suffer. This is confirmed by Riccardo An-tognoni, owner of Omas in Senigallia, near Ancona,35 employees and 70 percent of export mainly to-wards EU area and Eastern Europe (former Yu-goslavia, Hungary, Poland, Czech Repub-lic). With sixty years of experience, Omasbrand is operating at international level witha range of tools for processing doors andwindows profiles, from standard machinesto working centers and production lines, in-cluding also circular blades, drills andtools for working centers, Hs and Hw

braze-welded cutters, Dp tools, heads with re-versible and profiled inserts.“As manufacturers of doors and windows tools, weare very influenced by the construction industry andthe situation is difficult. We cannot see real recov-ery perspectives in the national and European mar-kets, but the strong competition of materials suchas pvc and metals has an influence”. A stagnatingsituation that leaves the market in a suspendedstate. “Tools demand is very low compared to ourproduction potential. However, it is focused on astrongly customized product, designed ac-cording to customer needs, as a company we areready to grasp all opportunities".Are made-in-Italy tools still value-added prod-ucts? “They might be, but today the quality/priceratio matters more. As manufacturers, we cannotgo below certain levels, the price rush that reducesthe quality of the offer is not a benefit. Well-donejobs have a cost”. Ideal requirements for tools areclear: durability and improved performance, butalso a range of services and customer support. “Wehave already developed performance, now we haveto work on the product. Technical improvement isvital in any case and it has to be managed ac-cording to different modes. Doors and windows cus-tomers ask us new machines or to equip existingones. Extensive upstream cooperation is neededwith the manufacturer, with the shared aim to ob-tain finished doors and windows in compliance withregulations with a high customization level”.

FOCUS ON FINISHINGThe small size of Italian tools manu-facturers compared to the big manu-facturers of the German area. Exces-sive fragmentation of Italian companies, substantially single-product organiza-tions, against international companies

that provide the market with complete productranges, high quality and local post-sales service.Good market shares at national level, but irrelevantat international level. These are the main issues of the tools industry forwooden doors and windows according to MarioBaldo, owner of Rekord in Rovereto (Trento),with approximately fifty employees. He expressespositive opinions as to the confirmation of the bonusfunds up to 65 percent of the value to renovate build-ings, and he adds: small Italian companies cangrasp interesting opportu-nities also from a difficultsituation, leveraging it in theright way and with entrepre-neurial spirit. “All those whowill reorganize themselves inthe market in the next months– reducing operating costs tothe benefit of an increase inproduct quality/services –will be able to face the crisis".Waiting for real recoverysigns, in the first six monthsof 2013 “the results are in linewith the expectations of thebeginning of the year, withvalues ranging from 10 to 15 percent. As to solidwood, in particular, the negative situation is con-nected to the stagnating situation of the constructionindustry”. Export reached around 60 percent andit is mainly focused on Europe, divided into shrink-ing Southern Europe and the German engine that“has pushed up to now the big machinery and toolsmanufacturers and it is now beginning to feel thenegative consequences of the general situation”.High precision during processing, maximum sur-face finishing quality and reduced operatingcosts are always the basic requirements for the pur-chase of a tool. But, “ the overall management ofservice – increasingly effective, efficient and withhigher quality – will be the most important winningfactor”. The innovation of tool materials, design anddevelopment stems from synergy. “The know-how and technology exchange between the lead-ing market players, tools and machinery manu-facturers will have to be enhanced. They will haveto establish a technical/design synergy and to pur-sue the constant improvement and quality of the so-lutions they produce and sell in the market. Oth-erwise they’ll fail”. ■

66 XYLON INTERNATIONAL July-August 2013

POLAND

Every year, Poznam hosts a not-to-be missed eventfor “industry operators”: we are talking about Drema-Furnica, the exhibition focused on wood processingtechnology, furniture components and finished fur-niture items. The exhibition took place from April 16to 19, recording huge attendance of Italian compa-nies that – through their local resellers – visited or ex-hibited at the event. Acimall, the Italian Associationthat represents the Italian manufacturers of wood-working machinery and tools, makes no exception, and every year it leverages this opportunity to ex-change opinions and have feedback on this extremelyinteresting market. This year, we decided to expandour point of view and to focus our attention not onlyon Italian operators attending the event, but also onthe expectations of two other players in the industry:local machinery resellers and final users. Thanks to the cooperation with two Italian companies– Maggi Technology and Salvador-Solidea – we or-ganized two interviews with Marci Zadlo, owner ofMardrew, a company reselling woodworking ma-chines and tools, and Martin Kuchta, owner of thesame-named company producing wooden sofas.

Mardrew is a small companies with ten employees, reselling conventional Italian machines and usedequipment in general. It mainly sells its solutions in

Poland, with an export share of only 10%. The oth-er main markets are Ukraine and Slovak Republic.Every year, they exhibit at Drema; for the rest, theirmarketing strategy is focused on the conventional ad-vertising communication channels.

Kuchta, based about 70 kilometers far from Poznam, produces sofa frames. It’s a medium-sized compa-ny with approximately 170 employees and its prod-ucts are delivered to other companies that carry outupholstery application and - at their turn - distributethe finished product on the German market. They carry out every kind of machining processstarting from the sawmill, the processing of plywoodand particleboard panels and the machining of sol-id wood pieces, to end up with the assembly of thewhole structure.

The points of view of the two operators are un-doubtedly different, but we wanted to propose an in-teresting parallelism on some of the most debatedtopics. We could not avoid asking something aboutthe current market situation: Zadlo confirmed thatthe woodworking machinery industry is not so easyto approach; the user looks for medium-qualityproducts at good prices and machines have to adaptto this trend; the price is becoming the most impor-tant leverage at all levels. “Made in Italy” productsare responding to these requirements pretty well.

LOOKING AT THE POLISH MARKETPoland is one of the main European markets for Italian woodworking machinery manufacturers. We have tried to get a deeper insight, meeting a furniture manufacturer and a reseller of Italian technology. This is what they told us…

taldo, which accountsfor about 30 percentof the offer and mostof the panel pro-cessing machineryrange; the rest con-cerns the sales ofused standard ma-chines for panel andsolid wood process-ing. Zadlo does notdeal with NC ma-chines, because he considers them still too risky forthe specific structure of the Polish market.Kuchta’s production line, on the contrary, starting fromthe sawmill up to the assembly of the finished prod-uct, features different NC technologies, all from Italy. The relationship with Italian technology started sev-eral years ago with Polish Teknika, a company thatsupplied all the necessary elements to start the ac-tivity. Since then, suppliers have changed, but not theorigin of technology that continues to be mainly “madein Italy”. Installations include Biesse, Solidea and ScmGroup technology, while for easier operations the fur-niture manufacturer adopts local technology.

The topics covered by the two entrepreneurs werefaced with expertise and, to sum up, we can say thateven if the economic activities of the two companiesare completely different as to distribution and saleslogics, some elements and feelings can be shared.Italian technology is, first of all, a quality brand thatis positively perceived and appreciated by the mar-ket. Yet, the uncertain economic situation in the medi-um term generates some worries that, however, donot affect the importance of this market, currentlyamong the top-ten destinations for Italian manufac-turers of woodworking machine ad tools.

by Carlo Aberto Strada ■

Promotion and Studies Office, Acimall

Kuchta’s opinion on this topic was rather aligned. Thefurniture manufacturer has recorded a drop in demandstarting from last October. Even if the drop was notso sudden, this sympton should not be underesti-mated, for the negative trend has been confirmed pro-gressively, month after month. In absolute terms, how-ever, the level of orders is still significant, with amplemargins for safety. As to short-term perspectives, they were both veryprudent. The owner of Mardrew confirmed thatPoland is not a happy island and, up to now, sever-al purchases of new machines have been carried outthanks to the availability of European funds; we donot know, yet, if credit inducements will continue ornot. However, Zadlo said that this is not the right wayto support economic growth: while on one side Eu-ropean funds support the purchase of high-perfor-mance machines, on the other side they introducein the market a technology that is not necessary, con-sidering the peculiarity of the Polish wood industry, consisting of a huge number of micro companies.Kuchta, on the contrary, stressed once again that themarket in the near future will be strongly driven byprices. In a situation characterized by a reduction ofdemand at general level, furniture resellers will asktheir suppliers to reduce the price and, consequently, the players that are upstream the industry will haveto adapt. The furniture manufacturer explained thathis company could adopt a strategy of this kind: op-erating only in Poland and being a single-productcompany limits the range of opportunities: that’s whycompetition is mainly focused on price.

After facing “general economy” topics, we talkedabout technology, asking them how "made in Italy”machines fit into their daily business.Mardrew is a reseller of Maggi Technology from Cer-

MARKET DEVELOPMENTDefinitely important figures: “"The past year illus-trated once again how important our internationalmarket presence is”, said Gerhard E. Blum, Ceo.“While turnover development in Western Europe wasrelatively flat, all other market regions, such as East-ern Europe, North America and Asia, developedpositively”.A result that is increasingly important if you considerthat for Blum as well demand is oscillating and or-ders fluctuations that had already been noted in pre-vious years have further increased and extended. This trend requires a high degree of flexibility in plan-

KNOW-HOW AND NEW PRODUCTSA very interesting piece of news according to us isthat Blum has always been among the top 10 in theinvention ranking of the Austrian Patent Office overthe past few years. In 2012, the fitting experts registered 57 patents andutility models. “Blumotion”, one of the milestone prod-ucts for gentle and quiet closing, has recently beenpresented the European Inventor Award 2013 (seebox on page 70).

ning and also in the production departments. The positive calm in steel prices ensures more “tran-quility” at least on this side, though slight increas-es are expected for the coming period.

INVESTMENTSThe expansion of the engineering center has beenconcluded and individual departments have alreadymoved into their new location. The expansion of theBlum Logistics Centre at Plant 7 in Dornbirn is un-derway. This building phase comprises a three-lev-el production building, an increase in the capacityof the automated high-bay warehouse and new con-tainer shipping facilities for rail transport. Investmentsamounting to 26.8 million Euros will be made in to-tal and completion is planned for mid-2014. Ten new offices will be created in Plant 2, while theadditional training center at Plant 7 in Dornbirn willbe finished in time for the arrival of new apprenticesin September. A subsidiary was recently opened in Vietnam, tobe added to new facilities in Greece and Portugaland two new subsidiaries in China, while in Mex-ico Blum started construction work on a new officeand warehouse building.Investments of the Blum Group totaled 78.25 mil-lion Euros in the 2012/2013 financial year, ofwhich 65.6 million Euros were invested in Vorarlberg.

Fair gifts have a great tradition forAustrian fittings manufacturer Blum –but not in the conventional sense. Vis-itors to Interzum 2013 in Colognewere again asked to forgo their giftsand instead sign the visitors’ book atBlum’s booth. Blum donated 10 Euros per signatureto a good cause. The donation againwent to “Light for the World”, anAustrian organization that operates onan international scale to help peoplewith eye disease, the blind and peo-ple with other handicaps in the poorregions of the world. Every five seconds, a person goesblind in the Third World; every minutea child. About 50 percent of blindness

all over the world iscaused by cataract. A15-minute operation, which costs 30 Eu-ros, suffices to replacethe clouded lens withan artificial one, restor-ing people’s eyesight. 40,700 cataract op-erations were carriedout in Africa, Asia,Latin America andSouth-East Europelast year. These oper-ations restored the eyesight of peoplewho would otherwise be blind for therest of their lives. Blum has supported “Light for the

World” for many years because thedonation is mainly used to help theweakest members of society: childrenand the elderly.

HARDWARE

“Blumotion”, Blum’s solution for soft and effortless closing, haswon the “European Inventor Award” of the European PatentOffice (EPO) in the category “Industry”. The internationalaward is designed to put the spotlight on innovative develop-ments created by people with great technical, scientific and in-tellectual expertise. The Blum’s team of developers who receivedthe award in Amsterdam were overjoyed. "“Being nominated wasan honor in itself. Holding the award in our hands is a great feel-ing and recognition for the hard work done by the entire team,”said Gerhard Kleinsasser, Head of Research and Development.

2013 “EUROPEAN INVENTOR AWARD” FOR “BLUMOTION”

Gerhard Kleinsasser’s team received the European Inventor Award 2013.

The company continued to pursue its strategic goalsand orientation in the development of new productsand services in the past financial year. At Interzum2013, the most important trade exhibition in the worldfor Blum and also the most important event in the worldfor this industry, the Austrian Group presented a rangeof interesting innovations to its customers. The“Legrabox” box system by Blum with minimalist de-sign met with great approval from international spe-cialist visitors at the exhibition, and the “Tandembox”,that covers a wide range of requirements with its threeprogram lines and offers a multitude of possibilities fordifferentiation, was also a major success. The new HK-XS stay lift of the “Aventos” program is perfect forsmall lift systems. This latest addition further increasesthe range of possible applications in wall cabinets. The new “107 degree Clip top Blumotion” hingehas been added to the range of hinges and can beused for doors as from 15 millimeters.

THE FUTUREForecasts for the forthcoming financial year varygreatly by market regions and according to the Man-agement it is very difficult to make any predictionsabout the development of individual markets.Blum is convinced, however, that its innovative prod-ucts, international market presence and high flex-ibility will put the company in a good position toachieve positive results also in the 2013/2014 fi-nancial year. ■

AWARDS

Federico Giudiceandrea ofMicrotec is the winner of theSchweighofer Prize, 2013edition, an “award for hisoutstanding career” ac-knowledging the extraordi-nary capacity of the Italianengineer to transform anddevelop the way to measureand “see” wood.Four other projects – fromGermany, Austria and Scan-dinavia – have received the“Innovation Award”, all shar-ing a common elementstressed out by the jury: dur-ing the international Year ofSustainability, the jury want-ed to highlight smart projectsallowing to reduce theamount of wood resourcesaccording to their high struc-tural load-bearing capacity. For the sixth time, theSchweighofer Prize was offi-cially awarded at Vienna’sCity Hall, which has be-come a prestigious stagefor the best ideas for conceptinnovations, technologies

and products contributingto the development of thewood industry in a real andsubstantial way.The Prize is donated by theSchweighofer family, own-ers of one of the most im-portant European compa-nies in the woodworking in-dustry, to support strongly in-novative ideas. Since 2002the award is presented everytwo years, and is endowedwith a total prize money of300,000 Euros.Last June 4, approximately600 guests from 35 countriesattended the award cere-mony in the capital of Austria, but also (and above all) to di-rectly experience the strengthand the innovation capacityof the 71 projects (newrecord for the event) pre-sented by people from eightdifferent countries. The award ceremony turnedVienna into the main center ofresearch, innovation and de-velopment of new solutions

for the wood industry, and itwas attended also by Niko-laus Berlakovich, AustrianMinistry of Agriculture,Forestry, Environment andWater Management, andRudolf Hundstorfer, Min-istry of Social Affairs, as wellas Andreas Mailath-Poko-rny, Viennese municipalcouncilor for culture.

“2013 Grand Prize” wasawarded to Federico Giu-diceandrea of Microtec inBressanone/Brixen, Italy,(www.microtec.eu), a choicethat was supported by highconsensus and by a greatapplause of all the people at-tending the event in Vienna. The protagonist of the eventwas awarded for his life-timecommitment to the researchand development of revolu-tionary methods for meas-urement and data collectionon the quality of raw wood, registering more than 60patents and supportingstrong engagement focusedon education, training andknow-how. The tools he andhis team implemented haveallowed to unveil the “se-crets” of wood, proving to beeffective and efficient tools foran increasingly smart andsustainable use of this fas-cinating and valuable rawmaterial.

Besides the “Grand Prize”,there were also the “inno-

vation Awards”. It was diffi-cult to choose among overseventy projects proposed tothe Jury, made up of AlfredTeischinger (Polytechnic ofVienna), Manfred Brand-stätter (Holzforschung Aus-tria Wood Research Insti-tute), Matti Kairi (Aalto Uni-versity Helsinki), Georg Er-lacher (Ceo, Österreichis-che Bundesforste AG), JosefRettenmeier (Ceo Retten-meier Holding AG) and BoBorgström (Honorary Pres-ident of Cei-Bois).

The event featured severalprojects for the constructionof buildings with up to 13floors with X-lam panels, but,as we have already said, there is a main theme gath-ering all these ideas, that isto honor 2013, the "Interna-tional Year of Sustainabili-ty", through solutions allowingto ensure the highest loadcapacity with great attentionto a more limited use of thewood resource. The jury, after an intensivework of analysis and valida-tion, awarded:Kielsteg Bauelemente(www.kielsteg.at), Legno +Lamiera forata (www.hs-rm.de/fab), Lifecycletower -“Lct One”; (www.hermann-kaufmann.at - www.cre eby-rhomberg.com), Nordic Wo -oden Cities (www.nordic-woodencities.com). ■

Page 74: From 1972 tailored finishing · Italianwoodtech is an initiative for the promotion of Italian technology for wood and wood-based materials processing, edited by Acimall and the Italian

This year, mid-April, Roberto Tengg called me on the phone. He told me, with his

calm tone of voice that seemed to stem always from a smile: “I’m on dialysis”. I

was speechless and I did not know what to reply for some seconds, then I said

something rather futile: “With a cigarette between your lips, of course".

“Of course”, he said.

Fifty days after our last call, Sonia Tengg, Roberto’s daughter, announced me his death: it was June 2, 2013,

just after midday.

Roberto Tengg passed away, he was one of the few Great Men of our times, characterized by mass-

produced characters.

He would have been a great man in any case, also without wood, and I do not dare judge him as an agent, I

do not have the competence to do that, but as a man of culture.

He was a brilliant Italian-Austrian-German mix, he read Japanese, American, Swedish and Russian

magazines, he spoke four languages and his colleagues – who thought highly of him as an international

agent – believe that nobody will be able to understand the market of forestry as he did. But, above all, I add,

nobody will enrich the statistics with the colorful strokes that Roberto Tengg used to provide.

Figures were his passion and, while he decoded the endless series of figures, he gave trendy opinions,

knowing that the references to raw material import volumes from Northern or Eastern Europe, from Americas

or Russia, could be your friend or enemy, according to the trend of consumption charts.

When he started talking about market topics, that place became a teacher's desk and we felt like nobody

could have replaced him. Tengg was a flow of updated, meaningful and precise news. It was very difficult to

hear him say a word that did not respect elegant and respectful communication manners.

Lately, he had become heavier physically, the disease was aggressing him, yet Roberto never gave up his

serenity of judgment. Neither in front of the evolution of a market that was becoming tougher and more

complicated, day after day. Nor when he was forced, for health reasons, to quit the positions that

Fedecomlegno – before – and Agelegno and Federlegno – later – had given him along his career. I will be

more than happy to let this part of the story to others: his page is a mix of high-quality speeches.

Tengg was always attracted by his world, he was involved in it, he was an actor and a curios observer. But

the business world is often ungrateful and mutable. So, lately, his heart worked in the satisfaction of secrecy.

In early June this year, when the widespread rebirth of life causes problems to many of us, his heart stopped

beating. So goodbye, Roberto. Goodbye, my dear friend.

ACIMALL

These are 2012 final fig-ures regarding woodworkingand furniture productiontechnology, tools included, processed by the StudiesOffice of Acimall, the Con-findustria member associa-tion representing the com-panies of the industry.

The most significant figure isobviously production, thatreached a value of 1,571million Euros, a 7.5 percentdecrease compared to 2011.A substantial decrease, which confirms the declinerecorded in recent years, aperiod characterized by de-mand levels that do not allowthe Italian industry to fullyleverage its production ca-pacity. Italian technology pro-duction might gain muchmore success and achievehigher values, but weak de-mand does not allow to starta new virtuous cycle.Another clear evidence isthe fragility of the domestic

market, whose trend has in-fluenced and will influencethe achievements of the in-dustry represented by Aci-mall. 488 million Euro ap-parent consumption of“made in Italy” companiesprocessing wood and wood-based products (13.7 per-cent lower than in the previ-ous year) immediately vali-date this remark and highlightthe stagnation of Italian de-mand at increasingly worry-

ing levels – if we also con-sider that import stopped at130 million Euros, minus 16.5percent compared to 2011.

In 2012, import accounted for26.6 percent of national con-sumption, a relevant figure, with a clear predominance ofentry-level solutions for lowvalue-added processing, orhigh-technology and innova-tive machinery. The relation-ship with the two main sup-plier-countries is essentiallystable: in 2012, again, importfrom Germany amounted to70 million Euros, while Chinatotaled 20 million Euros.

Let’s close with a view on ex-port, that has always repre-sented the real, strong vo-cation of Italian companies inour industry. The trend can be defined as“basically stable”: in 2012,Italy sold machinery for 1,231million Euros all over the

world, down by 3.7 percentcompared to 2011. Suchpercentage variation shouldnot be considered with ex-cessive pessimism; it ismuch more important to seethat, despite the efforts byentrepreneurs and their salespartners, the trend is not re-versing, yet.The percentage of machines, tools and equipment sold toforeign customers is con-stantly increasing, however, and in 2012 it reached 78.3percent of total national pro-duction. An opportunity onwhich everybody is workingwith much more determina-tion and engagement, tryingto minimize the impact ofproblems inevitably gener-ated by a weak domesticmarket, with an increasingnumber of compa-nies having an ex-port share just fewdecimal points be-low 100 percent. ■

EVENTS

We met Stefano Berti, Research Manager ofCnr-Ivalsa, who had just come back from Brusselsfor a meeting linked to the Forest-based SectorTechnology Platform, with a view to addressingthe Horizon 2020, the new EU program for the fund-ing of research and innovation.“A topic that seems not to be so interesting for Ital-ian companies”, he states with a touch of concern.“And consider that there are opportunities and funds

available also for those who deal withtechnology, with wood processing. We are talking about investments forthe development of new wood pro-cessing methods, funds that will begiven if, and only if, tight cooperationbetween science and productionexists. In other words, if companiesthat provide technologies will beinto the game”.

A great opportunity for companies to be the lead-ing players in a renovation process that is really im-portant in this period, working together with insti-tutes, universities to “target" research on realneeds, creating new competition opportunities. “Yet in Brussels there were no companies”, Berti con-tinues. “The connection between the two worlds arevital, “condition sine qua non” (an essential pre-requisite) to detect real topics that can be effectivelyimproved with European investment.I think about wooden constructions, the evolutionof machines for this industry or solutions to specificproblems provided by technology. I was the onlyItalian attending the event, while the other countriesare not losing this opportunity...It is certainly true that the difficult period is push-ing entrepreneurs to stay close to the most inci-dental problems, but it is vital to have a vision if youwant to look at the future with optimism. We can-not deny that we, Italians, are very good at “catch-ing up", we can always create situations that candeliver benefits, but the results are lower comparedto what we could do if we were more active, if weentered great projects on time".

ISCHP 2013The relationship between the world of research andbusiness will certainly be a key topic, directly or in-directly, during a prestigious event that will be heldin Italy, Florence, next October 7 to 9. We are talk-

sults for the wooden construction segment. We donot have to consider only the building envelope, theouter shell, but all that is inside, from doors and win-dows to floorings and stairs; goods and productsfor which hardwood is the suitable material”.

“In Florence, we will meet mainly researchers – con-cluded Berti – but we are intensively working for oneof our main goals, that is to involve people that useor could use hardwood and technology providers, sothat they can show for real what their machines cando, giving them suitable room to present their ideasand innovations in a context of absolute value”. ■

ing about Ischp 2013, the International Scientif-ic Conference on Hardwood Processing, thefourth edition of a meeting that gathers all the sci-entific “community” working for the enhancementof hardwood.

“The meeting in Florence takes place after the bi-ennial meetings organized in Canada in 2007, inParis in 2009 and in Virginia, Usa, in 2011. This year,as we were saying, the event will stop in Florence, going back to Canada in 2015 and probably in Fi-nalnd in four years", explained Berti.A project that mainly involves Cnr-Ivalsa for Italy,FP Innovations for Canada, VirginiaTech forUsa, the French technology Institute Fcba and Met-la for Finland.

“The main topic is the valorization of hardwood, pro-moting its use – both European or tropical species– or finding new solutions to increase its value ”,Berti states. “Through technology, first of all. It’s notmere chance that the topic is “Hardwood pro-cessing”, transformation. A key topic, because ifwood is not processed it is not possible to increaseits value at all! This is our strong commitment, starting from the cor-rect management of hardwood forests, passing fromwood quality and other processing innovations, bothfor machines as well as products. We increasing-ly talk about wastes reuse to produce special pan-els or the combination with other materials, just tomake few examples. To end-up with sales: one ofthe topics that we will be dealing in Florence willbe “Timber Regulation”, the recent regulation by theEuropean Union defined to tackle illegal cuts”.

“We must win on a basic value, namely trust, theopportunity to use this material as an alternative tosoftwood. Unfortunately, today operators havenot much confidence – if you let me use this ex-pression – in hardwood, because it is more difficultto process and it has more differences in terms ofhomogeneity. We have to provide them with a veryclear message, because if you process it with spe-cific tools and methods, the added value is huge, also from an environmental point of view! And I always like reminding people that poplar aswell is hardwood. But, jokes apart, there is the world of constructionthat is waiting for us, the ace in the hole of our in-dustry that is expecting a season of excellent re-

Last May 27, Triennale in Mi-lan hosted the presentationpress conference dedicat-ed to press and exhibitors forthe upcoming edition ofMade expo 2013 - Milano ar-chitettura design edilizia, scheduled from 2 to 5 Octo-ber 2013 at Fieramilano Rho,a reference event that thisyear becomes biennial, inodd-numbered years.Urban regeneration, protec-tion and maintenance of ter-ritory and infrastructure, earthquake prevention andenergy saving are the key is-sues for the relaunch of thecountry. But we must bepractical and take action, wecannot wait any longer. The Italian Parliament’s Envi-ronment Committee recentlyunanimously approved a 55percent tax credit on meas-ures to enhance the energyefficiency of buildings.Few days after the pressconference, the law-decreefor the extension of the 50percent tax reduction on ren-ovation was extended untilthe end of 2013, also includ-ing furniture items.Ance reports that in 2012 in-vestments in constructionslumped by 7.6 percent (in-flation-adjusted), reflecting aneven worse situation than in2011 (when investments went

It is crucial, however, to put in place amedium term strategy to giveoperators a stable scenario, which in turn can favorably im-pact the real economy. Ancealso reports that, between2008 and 2013, investments inthe construction industry willhave dropped by around 30percent, touching the lowestlevel in the past four decades. All industries do suffer: it is es-timated that in 6 years, newhome constructions will havedecreased by 54.2 percent;private nonresidential build-ings will be down by 31.6percent, while investments inpublic works will have de-clined by 42.9 percent.Home refurbishments are theonly sector that seems to bedoing satisfactorily, with ex-traordinary construction main-

An intensive period charac-terized by a strong acceler-ation of promotion towardspotential exhibitors fromall over the world. This ac-tivity not only consists of cor-porate stands at all major in-dustry exhibitions, newslet-ters, web pages, press re-leases and social media: themain focus is the search of

direct, one-to-one, often eye-to-eye contacts…This is the strategy adoptedfor a long time by Xylexpo, asthis is the only way we cantell about the efforts that – de-spite the difficult internation-al economic situation – aredeployed to organize theevent, as well as to under-stand the needs and desiresof exhibitors, their most urgentrequests, their suggestions.

The great exhibitions of Ger-man May gave an excellentopportunity to accelerateand expand this mission, making contacts that allowedus to collect positive sig-nals, reaffirming the trust inthis great event, the show-case of the Italian “market-place” par excellence, one ofthe most important at globallevel, but also a meeting thatenjoys a reputation of anevent with significant inter-national relevance. This iswitnessed by 177 exhibitors(there were 515 as a whole)arriving in 2012 from 34countries, as well as foreignvisitors, who accounted formore than 47 percent of the43,295 tickets sold. The rank-ing listed – top-down –France, Turkey, Switzer-

land, Russia and NeighborRepublics, and Germany, with strong growth ratesrecorded by Turkey (+45.6percent) and Russia (+33.5percent), in addition to Chi-na (+36.1 percent, alwayscompared to 2010).

Big international groupshave already confirmed theimportance of Xylexpo asthe only reference point in amarket – Italy – that is expe-riencing a long and criticaleconomic transition, but thatremains one of the referencemarkets for the production offurniture items and process-ing of wood and wood-basedproducts. This decision hasbeen made by a lot of en-trepreneurs and decisionmakers, whose opinion andpresence in Milan in 2014 al-low to define the 24th editionof Xylexpo as an opportuni-ty not to be missed to lookahead.

Such feelings will soon beconfirmed by the trend of ear-ly registrations: During thenext weeks, companies fromall over the world will re-ceive a form to fill in order to

finalize their subscription:“This will be the final step –commented Dario Corbetta, deputy director of Acimalland marketing director ofXylexpo – of so many meet-ings, conversations, workdone together with manu-facturers of technology, sup-plies, tools and semi-finishedproducts that were shownour project and its realscope. Constant commit-ment, started the day afterthe end of 2012 edition, which is now entering themost active and profitablestage, and which representsour answer to the crisis!".

Just a few lines to remindyou that Xylexpo is the onlyItalian event dedicated totechnology and supplies forthe wood and furniture in-dustry sponsored by Eum-abois, the Italian Ministry ofproduction activities andCfi-Industry Trade FairsCommittee (Confindustria),with the proactive and real co-operation of Ice -the Italian ForeignTrade Agency andFiera Milano. ■

dustry: “Already in 2008 –said Nesip Uzun, of AtlantisGroup – we received the Eu-ropean Award for Quality;Atlantis is one of the foundersof Seyad association (asso-ciation of Turkish b2b maga-

zines), one of the foundingmembers of the Turkish as-sociation of accessories andcomponents manufacturersfor the furniture industry(Maksder) and it has a wideexpertise in the industry, where it has been operatingfor years with prestigiouspublications such as Furniturkmagazine, Mobilia Dekora-sion, and also attending in-ternational industry associa-tions and organizing inter-national events and initia-tives such as Design Award”.

The Ekin group – added ZekiYucel, the General Director –is attending at least fiftyevents dedicated to the worldof furniture and componentsevery year, and it has beenrepresenting Turkey for along time in the most impor-tant moments of relationship, marketing, communication, meetings and seminars”.

The show will host the wholeworld of furniture, from house

furniture to office and contractsolutions; from beds to up-holstered elements, kitchens,up to interior decorations withlighting fixtures, textiles, ac-cessories and furniture ele-ments. Great commitment to

the internationality of vis-itors: through agree-ments with main localassociation of distribu-tion, indeed, FurnIstanbulwill count on the pres-

ence of buyers from close for-eign countries, who will be in-vited at the event.

“The Turkish economy –added Nesip Uzun – is rankedbetween the fifth/sixth placeamong the European coun-tries, but it grows at a definitelyhigher pace compared to theaverage of the EuropeanUnion; according to OECD,between 2011 and 2017, theaverage annual growth ofTurkey's GDP will range be-tween 6 and 7 percent. And donot neglect that, with aboutthree hours flight from Istanbul, you can reacg 56 countrieswhere 1 billion and a half peo-ple live, who represent onethird of the global economyand 46 percent of global im-port, more or less 8,500 billiondollars". “Finally – concludedNesip Uzun – we like to saythat today, Europeans in Turkeydo not have any problems asto visa or customs”.

Italy is the third global ex-

porter after China and Ger-many and it has had the abil-ity to reach and lead themarkets in every continents, but it is strangely missingfrom this area where, on thecontrary, Germans, the “his-torical partners” of Turkey, are investing a lot. It’s thanksto the penetration in this area– someone noticed – thatGerman companies have gotahead of Italy as to export inthe last years (up until tenyears ago Italy was largelythe first furniture exportingCountry in the world).

“We see that the Italian do-mestic market – commentedKadri Coklar, Vice-Presidentof Mobder (the association ofTurkish furniture manufactur-ers), during the press con-ference held in Milan – is stillstagnating and, despite theefforts, industry entrepre-neurs will unlikely reversethe trend significantly in themedium term. Through Fur-nIstanbul the Italian brandswill have the real opportuni-ty to promote their productsin this great and promisingmarkets, especially towardsthose Countries, such as Iranand Iraq, that are still quiteunknown to Italian compa-nies. Countries that have avery high opinion of“made in Italy” andwhere economicresources are notlacking…”. ■

From 15th to 18th October2013, the Pordenone Exhi-bition Centre will host the fifthedition of Sicam, the inter-national exhibition of com-ponents, semi-finished prod-ucts and accessories for thefurniture industry. We aretalking about an event thathas found a “place in thesun” in the international ex-hibition scenario of the wood-furniture industry, a fieldwhere the Italian furniture in-dustry – in a difficult marketsituation for many years –continues to play a constantreference role at internation-al level for its several andunique characteristics: fromdesign to process and prod-uct innovation. With over 450exhibitors from all the worldand 17 thousand operatorsexpected to visit the event, today Sicam is the only Ital-ian exhibition focused onthe furniture industry with astrongly international di-mension that has been con-solidated throughout theyears.“For an exhibition that todayis one of the most exhaustiveprofessional events on com-ponents, accessories andsemi-finished products – said

Carlo Giobbi, the organizer ofSicam – cover-ing most of thespace availablealready somemonths before the startingday is an important resultwithout any doubt”. Espe-cially if we consider the eco-nomic season and some oth-er exhibitions, let's add.“Over 85 percent of the ex-hibitors of the past editionhave confirmed again theirpresence – continued Giob-bi – and there are many newadhesions, including alsoforeign corporations; a clearsign of effectiveness for us,recognized also by the com-panies of the industry. Thecomponents and acces-sories' industry is facing realmarket difficulties, leveragingdesign and the capacity toinnovate and using in thebest possible way the mar-keting tools that in Italy andabroad continue to work well:International exhibitions firstof all, which continue to playa leading role for businessdevelopment”.The strong international vo-cation of Sicam was con-firmed also in the October

2012 edition: more than 30percent of all visitors camefrom foreign countries (93different countries) with aremarkable increase, in per-centage terms, comparedto the previous editions, ofoperators from Russia andGermany, two reference mar-kets especially for Italiancomponents manufacturers.Traditional European mar-kets continued to representover 70 percent of totalSicam foreign visitors, butseveral exhibitors recorded agrowth of business contactswith Turkey; a growing trendwas also that of Asian oper-ators, who accounted for 22percent of the foreign oper-ators that visited Pordenone.“The feature that character-izes Sicam – concluded Car-lo Giobbi – is its special ex-hibition format that empha-sizes ideas and the capaci-ty of components and ac-cessories' manufacturers tointegrate the supply chainwith the final producer in a

single development process.Another benefit is repre-sented by the fact that theexhibition is held in the mostsuitable period of the year:when the products that willbe proposed in the greatspring furniture events areunder analysis and designprocess, and the integrationof new design themes ornew materials can representa competition element thatcan make the difference”.Always attentive to the plan-ning needs of industry com-panies, Exposicam has al-ready scheduled the dates ofthe sixth edition of the Show:it will be held in Pordenonefrom Tuesday 14th to Friday17th October, 2014. ■
