[ Lead Space ]Lead space refers to space in frontof your subject. Leave extra spacein the direction your subject islooking. You might also see thisspace referred to as look space ornose room. Leave extra space infront of a moving person or object, like a runner, bicycle, orautomobile when following theaction. Not doing so will make itlook like your subject is in dangerof running into the edge of yourframe!

[ Close-up ]A close-up focuses your viewer’sattention on specific details. Itdemands that the viewerconcentrate on the information youare giving them. In storytelling,close-ups have great emotionalimpact. They can also be used togive the audience information thecharacters in your video don’thave. For example, showing aclose-up of a sign reading “wetpaint”, right before a medium shotof your character in the process ofsitting down on a painted parkbench, would build anticipation andset up the audience for the laugh. You will most likely need to use acamera support, like a tripod, inorder to get a steady shot. Checkout the camera-handling section.

A close-up of a person wouldframe the subject from the top ofthe head to the top of theshoulders. Human emotions arebest revealed in close-ups!

[ Headroom ]Headroom refers to the amount of

space between the top of aperson’s head and the top of yourframe. Too much headroom makesthe person appear to be sinking. Most novice photographers andvideographers will frame shots ofpeople with too much headroom.Take a look through some oldfamily photos if you don’t believeme.

Too little headroom places visualemphasis on the person’s chin andneck. When framing shots ofpeople, pay attention to where theeyes appear. Follow the rule ofthirds and place the subject’s eyeson the upper third line,

Reminder: When framing shots ofpeople, don’t forget to avoidplacing the edge of your frame atone of the body’s natural cutofflines: neck, elbows, waist, kneesand ankles.

[ Distracting Backgrounds ]Most of your shots will include

background elements that are partof the location where you’reshooting. Make sure what’s in thebackground of your shot doesn’tdraw your viewer’s attention fromyour main subject. We’ve all seenlive TV interviews, shot on location, where somebody in thebackground is waving or makingfaces at the camera. This is onetype of distracting background youneed to try to avoid. Always checkwhat’s in the background of theshot you are framing. Backgroundclutter or distracting objects, like anoverflowing garbage bin, canusually be avoided by repositioningyour camera (moving it left orright, framing a tighter shot, changing the camera angle) ormoving your subject. You mightalso be able to put the backgroundout of focus by decreasing thedepth of field in your shot. See thescreen depth section for moreinformation on controlling depth offield.
